Doesn’t it seem modern video game tech is just getting far too expensive for all but a small, well-to-do dedicated base for each item? I would love this cabinet for myself, but at $300 US I see nothing that would justify a purchase other than bragging rights. With the Astro Mini selling for $120 and basically being the same console with different games, what’s the justification for spending that much if you’re not a hardcore Taito fan with cash to burn?
@@General_X These mini's are always nostalgia indulgence purchases, Ive got the Astro city mini and Im well happy with it. Ive gone for the basic unit off Amazon jp, if you're in the UK it's around 131 pounds shipped, not cheap, but at least it's built well and wont become worthless anytime soon.
@@leeboy2k1 the construction does seem better than standard fare and I agree the value will hold. Is the Astro decently constructed? Any sticky buttons, garbled sound, or other common handheld issues?
@@General_X Virtua Fighter is MASSIVELY laggy with it's controls (on the unit or on TV), I have no idea how it got past QC. Every other game plays perfect and the astro pads are some of the best I've felt/used so pick at least one up for it. The PC Engine mini pad is the only other one with such superb build quality.
Halley’s Comet was one of the main reasons I bought this console. Aside from MAME, I’ve never seen it emulated anywhere until the ACA series came about on current consoles, not to mention the recently released Taito Memories (which is really just a compilation of Taito games that have been released by way of the ACA series). Like you, I was fascinated by the rotating screen. What a great execution.

26:59 A Twitter user from Canada by the name of Slinky Ramune was able to reverse engineer the Egret II Mini and was able to make use of the Egret II Mini’s SD card slot to do so. Slinky Ramune was able to change the emulator’s DIP option so that he can play the arcade roms like Puchi Carat in English. He even showed pictures of Project Lunar running on the Egret II Mini. This gives me hope that even if the Egret II Mini won’t have official firmware updates, there at least could be custom firmware updates that would give the Egret II Mini new and amazing features.
The absolute best mini so far is the PC Engine/Core Grafx/TG-16 mini. I couldn't find a TG-16 but I did get my hands on a Core Grafx Mini that I love. I'm going to have to check this mini Taito arcade out myself. I will likely buy this just for the TATE Mode (flipping the screen vertically).

Same here. That Retro Station console that Capcom released does not qualify as a mini console in my book. If Capcom were to make a Capcom Impress Mini, it would be amazing and would allow Capcom to put a lot of their most popular arcade games. Especially the Street Fighter and Dungeons and Dragons arcade games. It would also be cool for Konami to make the Konami Windy Mini, which would show off Konami’s amazing library of arcade games ranging from Frogger to The Simpsons arcade game. It would be Konami’s second mini console after the TurboGrafx-16 Mini.

yeah, I bought the Neo Geo Mini a few years after it came out, for around $40. I heard they charged $100 for it at first? That's way too much. The Taito and Sega machines are much better quality. I think the SNK kind of soured the American market on these. But you're right, it's still cute and fun to have.
definitely a sweet looking little unit! love the fact it has a rotatable screen to switch between standard horizontal stuff and the vertical games! nice that it can't be flipped accidentally like on your phone, though. maybe if I have the extra cash I'll see about picking one up!
You mentioned the Astro Mini controller works on it; there's a Genesis mini/MegaDrive mini controller put out by 8BitDo that works for the Astro (and is significantly cheaper than the actual Astro controllers) so folks may want to test if that works on the Egret as well. Save a few bucks/quid. Thanks for the review~
I can confirm 8bitdo M30 controller is compatible with Taito Egret 2 mini! Much better deal than the crappy conroller they shipped with the bundles. I didn't bother to order it because it looks the same in the pic as the one they shipped with Astro City mini. The joystick peripheral is really excellent though, I fully recommend it if you can order it separately (I think I got it for $70).
I'm a bit impressed with the selection. It covers quite a long set of years and a fair number of genres. I was already interested when I saw the rotating screen but the game list is turning this into something I think I'll pick up. Appreciate the coverage!
Im a bit underwhelmed by the selection. it is missing some of the best Taito games that were on taito legends vol 2 for PS2. There are going to be more games added but theyre going to be ridiculously expensive. I still want it because its really cool and i can just sell it later if i regret it.

For Kondash at 19:50, I used the Google Translate app on my phone to read the Japanese text through the phone's camera, and it worked pretty well. Translation wasn't perfect, but it was usable. So I wouldn't say completely unplayable if you can't read Japanese.
yeah, I second that on the MAME support. I've asked around in a few groups but so far no luck. I was able to get the joystick configured in emulation station and retroarch, for the menus, but as soon as I get into MAME it only recognizes the select button, not any other input. I tried to plug in the paddle controller and it didn't recognize it at all.
All or most of these are on the Taito collections on the PlayStation 2 (PAL and NTSC-J versions) I own all the PAL and NTSC-J disks, the Japanese disks have stuff on them that never got a release in other regions, I have played most that are on this arcade decoration.
I love the Taito Legends on PS2, although I just have the US ones. They re prob my favorite arcade collections. This thing looks awesome but that price is outta hand. EDIT: I guess its not too bad. I just saw the footage Slope's shown at 319 euros, but I checked the links and it was $193 for the Limited Blue edition, still more than Id like to spend. Maybe if I didnt have those Taito Legends. I do really like the Tate mode, thou.
@@zackschilling4376 the Japanese edition's of Taito Legends has more games, I think it's 3 legend disks and 1 best of legends disk.. they have Chase HQ and Chase HQ 2 on the Japanese versions, plus so much more. Import them they will work on a NTSC North America system. My PAL machine is modified to play all regions.

@@zackschilling4376 with PAL you can't play NTSC unless modified, I believe it does not need modification if playing NTSC-J on a NTSC. PAL is different. How is your PlayStation 2 modified? I have freemcboot and use a patch program to change regions to play copied imports in PlayStation 1 mode. There are some good guides here on UA-cam.
Sweet you showed the Astro City controller works that I already have. Implies the Magic NS adapter and **Japanese** Mega Drive Mini controller will work too. Can you test one or the other? Fascinated by the Master System comparisons that US gamers mostly missed out on.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think that you need the mayflash "pro", if that's the NS you're talking about. I have a regular NS (in the grey case) and it works on SNK mini but not on astro city or taito. The pro adapter does work, and I've been using 8bitdo arcade stick with it a a 2nd joystick. Also, 8bitdo M30 controllers are compatible.
Considering it's released in japan next tuesday i'm pretty sure at least one system box has been finalised. Then again they have already shown it on their official twitter account.
The review is lacking a bit as it doesn't go into if the unit has HDMI output, what filters/scanline options are available. Perhaps it has none of those. But I didn't see mention of it.

You smashed it, I'm looking forward to both the original Japan Pink and Western Blue versions of these as I have pre-ordered both. They are expensive but they are made with love and have a lot of content. Thanks for the review, be nice if you could elaborate more on the controls and how the functionality feels. Nice to know my Astro City Mini Controls will work on it not that it matters as I ordered every varient of control for it. I believe this mini candy cab trend started with the Neo Geo Mini. It amuses me that SEGA, by all appearances, looked at that and said, "hey, let's do that but better", and then Taito (Or Square Enix, who I believe owns Taito now) looked at the Astro City Mini, and ALSO said that.
I agreed the collection is well selected for a mixed of stuff there even tho there is gazillion bubble bubble, but it's worth it just for the rotating screen and 4/8 way joystick select on the fly. Now I'm just waiting for someone to hack it with the sdcard and now we are playing with power. No need to get a lot. Just give me retroarch and we are on our way to absolutely fantastic ultimate arcade mini.
Mine were just dispatched from Amazon JP to the UK -- £330 for everything ordered separately. I've checked and the Egret II, controller, arcade stick and trackball were sent as separate parcels so I should avoid any further import taxes beyond the VAT already paid. Buying from Strictly Limited (shipping out of Germany from what I can tell) would cost me over £400 at least.

Yeah, that thing is going to sell out. Taito, emulation, tiny arcade style devices and creature features (comforts) like a rotating screen shown in the video checks many of the big boxes and goes to an extreme creating some new ones at a fairly approachable price point. Most likely going to be on back order for many if my intuition serves me well.

That tate mode transformation mechanism is so satisfying. I wound up getting the luxury pack from play-asia because who knows if someone will soft mod it to play all the taito games. It's also worth it to me to see if the ball and paddle control is compatible with mame. If so it would up the experience of playing the sonic arcade game, missile command, and SDI among other games.
I'm curious about MAME compatibility on the other controller too, but I haven't seen anything yet. I was able to get limited compatibility with the joystick controller, but no function in game.
OK last comment probably but thank you for the mention of jungle hunt... My aunt had a game for c64 that I've been trying to remember, it didn't quite match pitfall but I gave up and just assumed it was, I now reckon it was jungle hunt.

Great review! Totally going to get this one. Have many of these games on the 4 Taito Memories ps2 games. Question…did you have a filter on while reviewing these games? Asking because the the ps2 compilations had a forced blurry filter in them (one of the few bad points on otherwise amazing collections).
Quite a lot of them are on the two taito collections on Xbox/PS2. I know the kaizer kuckles games are not and a few others aren't, however the taito collections also have games that can be played via pad without the need for the expansion (puchi carat, cameltry) and other titles not on this system (space gun, operation wolf/thunderbolt, jungle hunt and some others).
Although cute , but the screen is so small, smaller than my phone. Why they don't make it 10" and more ? Especially that the kids that played this games at the eighties, are now 45-50 and you know far-sightness

I already pre-ordered but am still thinking about the mini trackball/paddle , apart from Arkanoid the Taito games don't appeal to me much but if they hack this thing to play Mame roms that opens a lot opportunities like Centipede , Missile command , marble madness, cosmic chasm , tempest etc .
Hmm... it does look cool... but apparently the lag is terrible (so it plays like crap). Hopefully they can fix that, but it might not be something they can do much about. A higher res screen with modern CRT shaders would have been a really lovely addition. It'll end up on the shelves of many collectards I'm sure.
So I got this system and the light bleeding/clouding on the screen is appalling. How come no one mentions this? While playing games it's so-so, but the moment you start the system right at the Taito logo, it's extremely noticeable! Neither the Neo Geo Mini nor the Sega Astro City Mini have this problem. Admittedly, they have smaller screens that don't rotate (maybe that causes the problem?)

You said that Cadesh was a stupid game to have in there because there was no translation, but there was an English version of Cadesh. I played it all the time in college because there was a machine on campus, and I could complete it with 1 quarter. I assume that they could put in that version of the ROM if they localize it.
That’s not how you pronounce “Egret” @Slope’s Game Room The closest would be “Ee-gret” or the pronunciation is sometimes written “igret.” The Egret is a species of Heron.
When you say the astro city pads work on the system do they work correctly with the proper button mapping? For instance on the replicade street fighter 2 cab if I put in a usb six button it uses the mode button as an attack throwing off the mapping and cannot be changed. If the Egret uses the astro city pads with the buttons all being correct still then I may pick this up and save a bit of money.

Agreed, PC Engine Mini was a quality production from Konami, HORI and M2. Was blown away by almost everything about it
I completely agree. I love my PC Engine Mini. I'm super late, but I finally have this Taito machine coming in today.
Most of the games are available on the Taito Legends discs on ps2/og Xbox and they only cost a few quid.

Considering it's released in japan next tuesday i'm pretty sure at least one system box has been finalised. Then again they have already shown it on their official twitter account.
The review is lacking a bit as it doesn't go into if the unit has HDMI output, what filters/scanline options are available. Perhaps it has none of those. But I didn't see mention of it.

I believe this mini candy cab trend started with the Neo Geo Mini. It amuses me that SEGA, by all appearances, looked at that and said, "hey, let's do that but better", and then Taito (Or Square Enix, who I believe owns Taito now) looked at the Astro City Mini, and ALSO said that.

I agreed the collection is well selected for a mixed of stuff there even tho there is gazillion bubble bubble, but it's worth it just for the rotating screen and 4/8 way joystick select on the fly. Now I'm just waiting for someone to hack it with the sdcard and now we are playing with power. No need to get a lot. Just give me retroarch and we are on our way to absolutely fantastic ultimate arcade mini.

Mine were just dispatched from Amazon JP to the UK -- £330 for everything ordered separately. I've checked and the Egret II, controller, arcade stick and trackball were sent as separate parcels so I should avoid any further import taxes beyond the VAT already paid. Buying from Strictly Limited (shipping out of Germany from what I can tell) would cost me over £400 at least.
That suck for you now , I'm in the Netherlands so no more tax from Strictly Limited Germany .
I keep reminding myself that anything from the UK is taxed now when I order something .

I just bought my unit, funny how the "limited edition blue model" is still the only one being sold in the West. I think they just figured the Westerns would want as little pink as possible on their unit. The blue is nice but I still prefer the original

Yeah, that thing is going to sell out. Taito, emulation, tiny arcade style devices and creature features (comforts) like a rotating screen shown in the video checks many of the big boxes and goes to an extreme creating some new ones at a fairly approachable price point. Most likely going to be on back order for many if my intuition serves me well.

That SNES game... or, rather, 2 games... are more than just "similar" to KiKi KaiKai, they're outright sequels to it.
That tate mode transformation mechanism is so satisfying. I wound up getting the luxury pack from play-asia because who knows if someone will soft mod it to play all the taito games. It's also worth it to me to see if the ball and paddle control is compatible with mame. If so it would up the experience of playing the sonic arcade game, missile command, and SDI among other games.
I'm curious about MAME compatibility on the other controller too, but I haven't seen anything yet. I was able to get limited compatibility with the joystick controller, but no function in game.

OK last comment probably but thank you for the mention of jungle hunt... My aunt had a game for c64 that I've been trying to remember, it didn't quite match pitfall but I gave up and just assumed it was, I now reckon it was jungle hunt.

Great review! Totally going to get this one. Have many of these games on the 4 Taito Memories ps2 games. Question…did you have a filter on while reviewing these games? Asking because the the ps2 compilations had a forced blurry filter in them (one of the few bad points on otherwise amazing collections).
Quite a lot of them are on the two taito collections on Xbox/PS2.
I know the kaizer kuckles games are not and a few others aren't, however the taito collections also have games that can be played via pad without the need for the expansion (puchi carat, cameltry) and other titles not on this system (space gun, operation wolf/thunderbolt, jungle hunt and some others).
Ordered full set can't wait!

I already pre-ordered but am still thinking about the mini trackball/paddle , apart from Arkanoid the Taito games don't appeal to me much but if they hack this thing to play Mame roms that opens a lot opportunities like Centipede , Missile command , marble madness, cosmic chasm , tempest etc .

Hmm... it does look cool... but apparently the lag is terrible (so it plays like crap). Hopefully they can fix that, but it might not be something they can do much about. A higher res screen with modern CRT shaders would have been a really lovely addition. It'll end up on the shelves of many collectards I'm sure.

So I got this system and the light bleeding/clouding on the screen is

so-so, but the moment you start the system right at the Taito logo, it's
extremely noticeable! Neither the Neo Geo Mini nor the Sega Astro City
Mini have this problem. Admittedly, they have smaller screens that don't
rotate (maybe that causes the problem?)

My eyes literally bulged when you rotated the screen. I’ve been using an ipad for this since they’re 4:3 but the controller support is a bit limited
You said that Cadesh was a stupid game to have in there because there was no translation, but there was an English version of Cadesh. I played it all the time in college because there was a machine on campus, and I could complete it with 1 quarter. I assume that they could put in that version of the ROM if they localize it.

When you say the astro city pads work on the system do they work correctly with the proper button mapping?
For instance on the replicade street fighter 2 cab if I put in a usb six button it uses the mode button as an attack throwing off the mapping and cannot be changed.
If the Egret uses the astro city pads with the buttons all being correct still then I may pick this up and save a bit of money.
2 minutes into it and I'm stoked.
