- In this video we pay a visit to one of the richest neighborhoods in the US - Gold Coast Chicago. Our Gold Coast Chicago Neighborhood Guide & Tour will take us through the area bounded by North Blvd, Clark Street & Rush Street, Oak Street, and Lake Shore Drive.
Thanks for watching this Travel Guide from a Local Living in Chicago about Gold Coast neighborhood.
Gold Coast Chicago is known for historic homes, wealthy residents, high-end restaurants, classic bars, fun things to do, landmark architecture, and its location just north of downtown.
From 1837 (Chicago's incorporation) until the 1880s, there was nothing but swampland in Gold Coast. Successful businessman Potter Palmer left the fashionable Prairie Avenue district in today's South Loop to build himself & his wife a mansion that looked just like a castle on Lake Shore Drive.
Shortly after moving here, Palmer sold parcels of land to other wealthy Chicagoans and soon more mansions, exclusive hotels, and the first luxury apartment buildings began popping up all over Gold Coast, first along Lake Shore Drive, and then along Astor Street.
Astor Street was named after famous New Yorker John Jacob Astor. Although he never actually lived in Chicago, he was one of the most wealthy men of his time and naming a street after him brought even more prestige to Gold Coast. The Astor street district was made a Chicago landmark in 1975 and the entire Gold Coast district was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
In the 1980s, Gold Coast Chicago was second only to Manhattan NYC's Upper Eastside on the list of wealthiest urban neighborhoods in the United States.
Although other US urban neighborhoods have passed it since, Gold Coast Chicago remains one of the most affluent districts in the country.
The architecture of Gold Coast includes Georgian Revival, Queen Anne, Richardsonian Romanesque, Prairie School, and Modern.
To get to Gold Coast, take the CTA Red Line and get off at the Clark & Division stop. Other options include the 151 bus along Lake Shore Drive and the 22, 36, and 72 buses. To bike here, take the Lakefront Trail to the tunnel by North Avenue.
Gold Coast is also known for its high-end restaurants like Le Colonial, Fig & Olive, 3rd Coast Cafe & Wine Bar, and Lou Malnati's. Some of the great bars include Mother's, Butch McGuire's, and Hopsmith Tavern.
There are many things to do in Gold Coast like visiting Oak Street Beach, the International Museum of Surgical Science, the Charnley-Perskey House Museum, St. Chrystomom's Episcopal Church, Lake Shore Drive Synagogue,
Goudy Square Park Playground.

Hey Gusto Gang, thank you so much for watching this Chicago Neighborhood Guide! Have you been to Gold Coast, Chicago? What's your favorite thing about this historic neighborhood?
Hi Gusto, thank you for putting time and making these videos. I like the new once that talk about neighborhoods. I will love to see more of what each Chicago Neighbour has to offer, including the south side neighborhoods
Most definitely!
As a local, I love the old apartments. The whole neighborhood has a charm. You should pitch this type of local guides to the tourism office of the city. The cinematography and content is on point!
Next neighborhood: North Park, Albany Park and Lincoln Square
I love the architecture and history that the gold coast has.
I agree! So historic 💯
"what's there to do other than count your money" had me rolling! also love the outtakes. Thanks so much for making these neighborhood videos, they're so informative and I feel like I"m getting my Chicago education on. can't wait for the next one!

One of my favorite neighborhoods in Chicago! My go to place for walking around and exploring
That's dope! Yea same here, Gold Coast is really historic, just wish they hadn't demolished so much of it 😟
Hey Luis. Great work again....and thank you for mentioning the hope for more people of color living in the GC. Right now we are an endangered species in this part of town. ✌🏼

Very informative
Appreciate it! I did lots of research for this one, learned a lot about the neighborhood!
Love your videos!
Thanks Dorota!!
I would like to see Streeterville next. Thanks you're doing a great job!
Working on that one, I was in Streeterville the other day for a doc appointment, it's a great area
Loved the wooden alley.
I spotted the marker on Google maps a few years ago and got curious, it was such a fun discovery. My only question is -- where is the other wooden alley in Chicago lol ...
Loved this!!!! Do Logan square and lakeview / boys town.
Thank you so much! Most definitely!
I agree totally! I fly into O'Hare and take the train downtown if its early in the day. If my flight is later,I always Uber. $2.50 vs $30 each way. And it always feels wasteful, especially when I'm alone. I won't even talk about some stops downtown don't have elevators,so try carrying your luggage upstairs to get to the street. I definitely hope your video influences some changes. I love Chicago! Great video! 💕
Thanks so much Tasha!
I love your videos and love the Gold Coast. That's my building in the beginning (right) and at 7:49 on the right, just across from North Av. Beach.
Next can you tour Noble Square or South Loop? Since those are both awesome areas
Sounds good!
Love Gibson’s !
You should do a Streeterville guide! Your videos are super dope man!
Thank you so much Walter!
New subscriber here. Loving these videos. Watching from Hawaii - hope to visit Chicago (and maybe move) someday!

I live here!!! and I LOOOOOOOVE IT!!
True
Very informative video man I'm in Elk Grove Village. Moved here looking for A Delivery Driver job. Never been to Chicago it's a new experience
🙌
Just moved to Chicago a few weeks ago and your vids were super useful! Would love to see a neighborhood breakdown of Edgewater/Rogers Park (I'm biased as I live in the area 😎)
Hey glad to hear that! Sounds good!!
Just found your channel. It’s really good! So many places I had no idea about and I grew up here! I’d like to see Hyde Park and Jackson Park Highlands if you get back over to the south side.
Thanks Michelle! Definitely planning on Hyde Park soon!!
Same here, it is fun to learn unknown facets about your hometown.
Loved it!:) could you make one on your favorite coffee shops?:)
Thank you!! Yes definitely! ☕
This Channel is certified Legit!!! 🙌 this is my 4th video in a row...😂
Love these videos! I think it would be cool if you did lakeview! (I just moved there!)
Great to hear! Thank you so much for watching 💯
It's wild that you can *still* find a relatively affordable apartment/condo in such a ritzy neighborhood. You couldn't find that in the Upper East Side! Be cautious with those "$300K" condos though, often time they have $1K+ fees per month + property taxes so you end up essentially paying rent AND a mortgage.
You should do west loop next
Sounds good!
Hi Luis! Awesome video: Where else in the city can you find the other wooden Alley? A Chicago Local here :) Thank you for this video
Hey Luis and Vanessa, I may have said this before. But we (as a city) are not merely trying to attract young professionals to live here. There is also a vibrant and necessary market for (as much as I don't like to admit it) midlife couples. Regardless of gender. I'd like you to do some family oriented episodes about places like Lakewood Balmoral (Family houses in Andersonville) and North Edgewater, which has so many restaurants, experiences (I rank Lickety Split at Glenlake and Broadway as an experience with great frozen custard they make in the shop as one of the best examples). Explore and film here. I'll help as much as I can.
can you do north center next
It's definitely on my list!
Not gonna lie I haven't had a lot of time. But I want to visit the Beach. I like doing stuff like that
The beaches are great, looking forward to when they open again. This weekend there were several lifeguards out there telling people to keep moving
I'm surprised you didn't mention the Newberry Library as part of the Gold Coast.
do Logan Square! Also you mentioned Gainesville in a previous video so I'm assuming you're also a member of the gator nation. Go Gators!
Most definitely, Logan Square is on my list! Go Gators!! 🐊
Luis can you do a video on Englewood Chicago ?
Absolutely!
@@LuisGustoComedy Thank you, sir! I've been doing research and there are investors stocking up on properties by the whole foods on 63rd and Halsted.
Two words: shopping guide
Soon!
20 Cedar is a Frank Loyd Wright House❤

🙏
Only place I could call home! I lived 1 block away from Oak St Beach. N 200 feet from viagra park. Almost married into Daley's fam. ❤Home
interested in the catholic churches in the gold district near Dearorn st.
Miss my beloved city, years ago you use to be able to drink on the beach. Then they took that away. But.... my friends and I had a Portable blender and would make our drinks on the beach and bury our bottles in the sand in between making our drinks, the best!🤣 and a lil tid bit Hefner’s daughter was a dental patient in the office I worked at in Chicago and the man she is married to was married by his uncle Judge Marovitz which there’s a Lil 9 hole golf course that I played on many x’s right by the lake in Lakeview named after him.
Can you do good jobs in Chicago I was thinking moving there when I 18 year old
For sure!
Biggs Mansion is the best spot on the Gold Coast
It's a beautiful home, just outside the border of Gold Coast district, I'll talk about it in a Near North Side video
Great Video , say have you thought about collaboration with Steven Russell B?
Thanks bro!! Collaborations are great!
1000 USD from 1929 is 15k in today’s money.
Dayum!
Crazy how expensive it was to live in Gold Coast during its first peak
Moms dayz
I don’t think so. Sausalito, California was the most richest ppl for 3 decades. Chicago Gold coast? never heard about it.
