- Bongwater was a college rock band formed by Ann Magnuson and Mark Kramer (boss of the Shimmy Disc record label) in 1985 and dissolved in 1992.This is a video for the song "The Drum" and was directed by Brad Dunning.
This song helped bring me out of a seriously BAD trip one time. I was on the verge of completely freaking out but luckily had the wherewithal to get my headphones going and lucky me this was the second song in & by the time the kindly voiced science guy says "this is not high, and because it is not high, it cannot disturb MY consciousness unless I permit it to do so" I was in a much better frame of mind. But really, I was still really fucking high...🤗
I remember my worst BAD trip. Stumbling around town until I came to a picture house playing Easy Rider. I bought a ticket and sat through three showings until I felt I could face the world without freaking out. The seventies were such happy times.
@@episkopi08 wasn't bad,but stumbled in1/2 way through catch 22, and aircraft shot up
and ice cold claustrophobia, and guts, the only way to see that, adds an irreplaceable vibe.
Isn't it lovely to have a tune that brought you out of a bad trip? You got a really good one. Mine was an Ian Dury tune. Bongwater just reminds me of rolling around giggling tbh :)
Actually, it's "this is not I". Nothing that comes from outside of myself can disturb me unless I allow it to.
Ann is a ROCK GODDESS that never got the recognition she deserved ....BEAUTY !
Didn't know Bongwater covered this brilliant Slapp Happy tune, they make a pretty good go of it too!
this is an absolute masterpiece
I once played frisbee with Kramer for over an hour in a venue in Germany somewhere about 20 or so years ago; quite a claim to fame I think...
I love it when Slapp Happy gets covered. Criminally overlooked group, great music and lyrics.
Agreed!
Wow, I haven't listenedto Bongwater in a while. This is a good song to get re-introduced!
This is doing acid in the early nineties. And then you made pancakes later and watched MST3K
God I know. Cept I never made flapjacks the next day.
Did we hang out ? SPOOKY ! AMAZING BAND !
Better blotter back then
Done and done.

'90s?!! Blotter??!!!
God fuck it!!! I'm getting old!
I loved Double Bummer on CD so much it took me years to actually pawn it for weed. And my Big Sellout cassette ate it via Slurpee.
This comment is pure Bongwater. Love you man
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! DID SOMEONE REALLY POST MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE BW SONG?!?!?! It was the first song on "Too Much Sleep" album, if I'm not mistaken....a GREAT album from short-lived precious Pre-Grunge era. We reemember it well EVERYONE I KNOW IS GOING TO GET NEWS OF THIS POSTING
Timeless Hippie Folk . Magnuson and Kramer for ever !!!!!!
Manly Palmer Hall - "The Spirit of Zen." There's a version of it here on UA-cam. The section that's sampled at the beginning of this song begins c. 9:22.
The Key is "NOW",
This is the moment in which we can do.
What we call the future, is man's hope of the future,
which he is hoping Now. And
TIME
becomes the greatest Tyrant in our lifes
My Hippy acid days were in the early 70,s. But this takes me back there.
absolutely, saw Bong Water many many times, great live band!
double bummer was the best!!! cant believe i've finally found this again! the only reason i looked was because im watching ann in a movie called Small Soldiers.
Amazing. Thank you!
One of my favorite songs. Of all time. Thanks for posting.
Wow. I've loved this song for overy twenty years and I had no idea it wasn't by Bongwater. Thank you?
Exactly. Kramer and Ann, at the amusement park. It will never be this honest again, kids, if you missed it, you missed the moment everything went commercial. "On the beat, in all his parrot fashion..."
the words to this song are amazing. try to make sense of them, when you do.. life will make sense. Life get's better all the time, it's just in your perspectives does it stay the same. Every generation finds themselves in want for days of old. Time is now. What is your time?
It's a cover song: ua-cam.com/video/MiEj0KFdgLo/v-deo.html
Time is the greatest tyrant in our lives.....no truer words have been spoken.
Awesome + good memories...
Brilliant maybe even better then their cover of Bedazzled. The original by Slap also fantasitc, speaks volumes about Bongwater that they would cover this sont. I miss them.
Miss em both.
@@finnkdy I miss Ann more (but that's not very Zen of me)
Also my own fav moment of this song ... been a Bongwater fan for well nigh 20 years now (give or take a few) ...
Get in line, keep in time with the Drum
And don't forget you're nothing yet but water
Are you coming to or coming from
The understanding that I'm handing it to you?
Or is that a job you don't dare do?
Hey, my sweet patootie, there's a letter for you
(You'll find it on the shelf)
- Though it was posted in Calcutta
I know it's just another that you've written to yourself
We watched a distant drummer flashing*
On the beat in all his Pierrot fashion*
One won money, two want a show,**
Three thought it funny, but four want to go**
Get in line keep in time with the Drum
- Don't forget we're nothing yet but water
Don't move your feet until the next beat comes -
One of the laws says pause between
Though I would hate to make the game seem mean
Hey my pretty flower can you guess where I've been?
Can you guess at all?
I've been to your rooms and learned
You have all the mirrors turned against the wall
We watched a distant drummer flashing*
On the beat in all his Pierrot fashion*
One won money, two want a show,**
Three thought it funny, but four want to go**
Listen now to the sound of the Drum -
And don't forget we're nothing yet but water
It won't be pleasant when the present time is done
Testing nightly 'neath a sprightly summer moon
Your spirit like a jelly in a spoon
Hey ma jolie fleur there's a cat in the room
And it's not the type you're used to
Though I think I led it to the sink
And tried to make it drink
It refused to.
Hey thanks!
Look for the orginals by Slapp Happy on the albums Casablanca Moon and Acnalbasac Noom. All three very different readings of the same song and all worth having.
We used to trip hard on acid to this album
If Ann wasn't already one of my heroes, the deerstalker alone would have made her one.
keep in line keep line with the drum (Brilliant)
A very respectable cover.
If you didn't catch them back then , you missed it ...THIS WAS THE BAND THAT WERE TO TAKE US INTO THE MILLENNIUM
wow i had no clue. Amazing upload.
Great: thanks for uploading! :-)
same here lov it
Something about that crying kid in the tank top is unbelievably poignant.
this video is prophetic...DisneyLand...WOW!!!
"TIME becomes the greatest tyrant in our lives TIME"
They were a couple for a while, but Kramer went back to his wife when he found out she was pregnant. Then Ann sued the label for millions in unpaid royalties, I think. Sad end to a great band.

This video is my origin story
I heard Ann Magnuson sued Shimmy Disk and caused it to go bankrupt. It's too bad because they put out a lot of good music. I guess my old lps are worth some big money now. Remember Hard Ball? It's Timmy the toad man. Classic
I remember hanging out for Shimmy Disc music to arrive on import months after being released over in America. They had some brilliant if eclectic stuff. I wondered whatever happened to them.
omg i luv u4 the disney dino train intro et al the imagery u provided 2 this old fave tune! back to the land... a happy place! where's Ms. Magnussen now?
Sing along with bongwater!

" I TAKE A BRAKE FOR BONGWATER "
Damn! John Holmes makes an appearance at 1:08!
lol, he was packing
this good video
It just goes to show that when you are willing to spend $250,000 to make a video, sometimes it does pay off. They built that entire amusement park from scratch in Prague, and burned it down immediately afterwards. Those were the days, man. Now for $.25 mil all you would get is a couple of people with a video camera shooting raw footage at some lousy fair and some freak with red thigh-high boots shaking his ass in broad daylight.
It's hilarious to see Bongwater described as "a college rock band"!!
So who's the principal? Alexander Shulgin?
kosmiktrigger23 what the heck is college rock.... Lame name for a genre! Maybe "art Rock" is better, but Bongwater can not be categories.. It's genius!
What the hell is a college principal?
@@RobertDoosh Dean?
video is great
Thanks Jake the snake for showing me bongwater
The key is now. This is the moment in which you can do. Or, at least, teach.
Believe it or not but BBC radio 1 used to play this quite regulary during it's peaktime shows gary davies, simon mayo, steve wright thats how i got to know this song kinda hippy scool teacher...ish lol
…and what about ‚The Bongwater - Boxset‘?
cheers,
Dorian Gilbert……..-🦇
I wish Kramer would put my band on Shimmy and pay us no money....worked for Gwar and King Missile!
its actually "....you're nothing yet but bongwater." they changed the lyrics.
nice boots, mr.k!
I just stumbled on this from listening to The Velvet Underground. 🔺

I've watched a different drummer flashing
on the beat in all his Parrot Fashions.

2:55-3:05
does anyone know if the person speaking on the old record about 'time' in the background is poss. leonard nimoy?
Does anyone know where I can get a transcript of the words that are said in the backround of this song ??
Can someone tell me the chords so I can play this on guitar?
Bongwater......Get off my fuckin bus.........bong.....water.
Is this Epcot? It looks more like California
Interesting that Disneyland hasn't changed much since then.
KRAMERS python boots kill me
I hope those people never danced again.
*puts a flower in Ann's hair*
I'm off clubbing for a neandreatheol hero.
ORIGINAL AND FAR SUPERIOR BY "SLAPP HAPPY"(HENRY COW?!) IN 1973-4 !!!!
The songs name is the drum and I hear no drums.
I think they actually WERE.
Who did this song originally?
Slapp Happy
This is based on a very obscure old song, minus the lyric about Bongwater. I think its also titled the DRUM. Do u know?
Slap Happy
G Major!
Say classic rock rock without saying classic rock.... take that letter down and read it to yourself like you used too.
