Wave of the Winter Movie (2019)

- The O’Neill Wave of the Winter is the pinnacle of the North Shore season, sure. But it was only one spectacular ride over a four-month season which saw hundreds of spectacular rides. We documented the best of these spectacular rides over the whole damn winter and packaged it into a 27-minute long movie that celebrates the heroes of the North Shore, complete with insights from those who mattered most - the surfers and judges. Enjoy.

When I saw cams wave I thought. "Damn that's got to be top 2 . If not winner.
But the wave sort of did the work.
When I saw Keitos it was the first time I've ever seen a wave and ride and said. "Oh shit, that's the wave of the winter. " Live. And honestly, maybe the best pipe wave of the last decade.

I thought Cam Richards' wave had the advantage by a little bit. That thing was INSANE. Keito's had the better drop though, just an incredible wave so at this point it's just nitpicking. Keito almost won (I thought he should've won) for a similar backhand bomb a year or two ago
It was a fun conversation this year, dissection the details. But in the end, hard to argue with those judges.
This video made me weep with joy.

The one surf video I truly can't wait to see every year is "Wave of the winter". I hope they don't dilute it by adding different locations around the world. Would be cool to see a compilation video of best rides from top spots around the world, but not a documentary like this.
Btw, Kalani Chapman's board was huge when he won. Amazing how big a board they can ride there

Mark, Eli, and Cam all deserved to win something with those waves, I still think Cams wave was a little better, but it dropped off from intensity even though it seemed like he rode it about three times as long. Idk they were all sick not sure how Eli paddles in on a 60ft face but Benji late drop into a 12ft pipe wave is hairier? Seems like while you don’t have to be a local to Hawaii to win you have to be someone whose paid there dues and submits years of clips to win. Cam got the wave of the day when Koa Rothman went out to Hatteras and surfed a hurricane swell with Brett Barley and the boys. Hopefully Cams time will come soon.
Where was kalani Robb? After all he did surf at pipeline let alone few up there and was in a surfing documentary.

I'm all for more national parks but what constitutes a local? I understand someone born and raised there or a long time resident, but how long would someone have to live there to qualify? Im 7000 miles away from Hawaii (and 1000 miles from any ocean) so I'm pretty sure I don't qualify.
@@buckodonnghaile4309 Well said. I don't know. I live near Yosemite. You can climb anything there without a permit, BUT, you can only stay there 7 nights a year during peak season. You must buy a pass, either one week, or one year. You pay separate for parking camping, hotels, food, etc. It seems to work and keeps folks from monopolizing the beauty. However....pipeline is a cultural tradition for some and that needs to be accommodated as many other things need to be.
