I was there in 2014, and we saw the river come to life as guys dug it out. We didn’t see it get quite this big, but it was just so cool to watch the standing waves form and guys go in.
A big wave surfing friend almost drown here.. We lost sight of him. He ended up way down the beach throwing up. He said he just couldn`t get to the surface. And it wasn`t as big as this!
Haha...insane...I saw it when ya'll started digging it...Nope...I kept driving east...so much water in that thing! plus 12ft shorebreak. Viewers have no idea how crazy that was.
You are right. I have no idea whether this is dangerous or not. Can't really tell. But the fact that at the end where the wave is biggest and steepest people weren't going for it suggests that this is actually sketchy? Is it easy to drown there? Break your neck?
Bueno hombre, deja que los chicos se diviertan; a quien cuernos le importa la sequía, el daño medioambiental y que la 1/4 parte de las personas lo tenga jodido para encontrar agua ? (se notó lo suficiente el sarcasmo, verdad ?)
the Gnarliest i ever seen it !!! jaimie on jerrys board toward the end was over head !!! awesome fun i like try think id need fins after getting sucked out to sea Aloha DSC777
My first experience surfing was on the little break created by the sand bar created by the river running out. Also, the first time I caught a fish was in that river there (I let it go because pilau water) I went to Waimea Bay sooooo many times as a kid!
I shattered my collarbone on my honeymoon on that beach one winter. It’s called “breakneck beach” for a reason. Most beautiful place in the summer with no waves when I went back. Got to swim with dolphins.
I got an ear infection out that way and the doc gave me a handful of blue antibiotic pills, he handed them out like candy, probably gave me 30, and said on chocolate days to take a gram after surf, once, to knock out whatever, lepto, dunno, other bacterias. seemed sketchy but I did take them once or twice I think. mason got the natural immunity
The overflow eventually happens. It’s part of the rainy season, probably one more strong rain would have triggered what they did. I live in at a beach in Nicaragua where this happens every year in all rivers.
@@pregooooooooskio add to that, if the river is not emptied before it gets this full many homes up waimea valley get flooded. This past rainfall caused flooding because they didn’t breach it in time
Where does all the sand come from? Is it being pushed in from the ocean or being pushed out by the river? Awesome video! And love the artwork on your board!
I know this happens naturally but was this done at a time when the river was about to spill over anyways? If not was it the best idea to accelerate the process?

Watching Danny Duncan surf that was very cool.
So insane!! Glad y'all are okay and you even came home with those beautiful boards!
It’s crazy that the ocean builds up that sand again in almost no time.
Is it?
@@mr.smithgnrsmith7808 It is to me!
Jamie and Mason are nuts for riding that!
Gnarly doodes

*So rad 🔥*
Stout, kudos for hopping in this sans PFD. that is some gnarly WW
I love the lifeguard on speaker “if you fall in you’re going out to sea” 😂😂😂 and when the dude belly flopped and they all in unison went “ohhhhh” 😂
Absolutely terrifying, I would never think of going in that. Boys got some stones that’s for sure.
I'm old lol. But...I did have an early morning slop session with you in 2004 before ECSC in VA Beach. Good to see the legacy continue. Mahalo
We need more Mason Ho in surfing. Way more entertaining than pretty much any video surfline puts out.
Never felt so scared watching rivermouth surf!
Nice artwork on those boards

even riding a 2ft standing wave can be scary
@@martinbiehl4596 its way scarier, you literally get stuck underwater in a washing machine
@@martinbiehl4596 double black diamond shit with a shorebreak that size. You'll get rocked and then sucked out into a rip

These guys are the guys who made the river at Waimea in which we see today, let’s be thankful they did this

JOB was ripping
HO just stood up
This is first river wave I've seen with an actual lip.
It almost barreled
look up african river wave zambese i think ?
So much moving water!!!
Got sucked out at night...paddle in was one of the most scary situations of my life.
Dude gnarly
I get sucked too sometimes
I'm *always* down with getting sucked

For me it was Eastern Lake ((inlet) Seagrove FL) when it was unblocked to the gulf and when the tides changed!!
What kind of fish are in that river?
Mahalo! Some of the best and biggest river break riding yet.
Absolutely mental! Still one of my most favourite places in the world. Spent 2 weeks on the beautiful north shore in 2013. Great vid guys.
Time to go again ❤
@@saipan4209 it's such a great place. We stayed at turtle Bay resort.
@@saipan4209 where is it located
The river was a giant firehose nozzle for a while there! awesome thank you
Hope someone got some footage of that sandbar 😂
I would never let my kid anywhere near that, to watch as a bystander.
That sand can just wash away in no time.
6:10 Nice paint job on that Surfboard.
Wow, at the end, there was some serious water coming out of The river shooting into the ocean. Pretty scary.😮
Yeah, full send..
double overhead waimea river, hows that for a surf forecast.
Yeah dude that was mental, I saw that river and was like that's no joke, super gnarly. listen to da wisdom brotha
That section at 5:48 is gnarly.
Weird question! But does that go back to how it was and if so how??? Cool video though

Broooo wot🤯🤯 this is unreal
Mason doing foreplay on the bump😆
so gnarly!
Does that section of the beach ever get filled back in, or is that permanent??
Pretty Wild & it happened soooo quick
Yeah pretty sure tides currents and waves fill in all the sand again. This happens naturally they just sped it up a little haha
I was there 3 days after this storm and while there was a low area, the sand was back and the river was blocked again. Pretty quick
Biggest one yet!!!
you should use rope between to have something to catch to... in this fast water. river surfwaking :)
It seems that even Mason was out of his depth this time.
Insane! You have the coolest boards on the planet!
mental. Always wondering how the beach recovers afterwards.
Swell and current brings all the sand back and river runoff is actually very healthy for marine ecosystems to flourish
It's a natural process. Rivers do this routinely.
Do you guys make it happen or does it just happen. I find it so cool. We don't have that in Scotland lol
@@fraser15432 Both. In the video it was dug out, but if people don't breach the berm the river will do it eventually when it's raining.
Best damn river surfing in the Ho world 🤙🏼🌺
Looks like so much fun, Mele kalikimaka from San Diego!
Wowww, sooo cool. You guys!!! 🎉😯🤩

Is it dangerous to get between that river and the ocean?

Have you dumped a whole lake into the sea? 🤔

That is a class 5 rapid other wise know as a drowning machine
For a second I was like who’s that old guy with grey hair that’s going to send it. I did a double take because I saw no soft top log!
Where does all the sand come from? Is it being pushed in from the ocean or being pushed out by the river? Awesome video! And love the artwork on your board!
pushed/pulled out by the river when they break the natural dam formed by the sand, but the ocean does dump all the sand off eventually.
Are these the people whose video has been circulating of them connecting a river to an ocean?
1996 "fish" as in made in nineteenhundred and ninety six?
Где продолжение? Что стало с озером?))

Is it better to let the water go on a high tide or a low tide? That looked pretty knarly and fun👌
