- The O’Neill Wave of the Winter is the pinnacle of the North Shore season, sure. But it was only one spectacular ride over a four-month season which saw hundreds of spectacular rides. We documented the best of these spectacular rides over the whole damn winter and packaged it into a movie that celebrates the heroes of the North Shore, complete with insights from those who mattered most - the surfers and judges. Enjoy.
Winners:
O’Neill Wave of the Winter: Jamie O’Brien
4ocean Wave of the Decade: Reef McIntosh
O’Neill Women’s Overall Performance Award: Moana Jones
Surfline Breakthrough Performer: Joao Chianca
Surfline Overall Performer: Jamie O’Brien
Judges:
Gerry Lopez, Pancho Sullivan, Shawn Briley, Shane Dorian

Good to see Reef take home Wave of the Decade . Now that's an accomplishment of a lifetime . Congrats to all the winners and surfers who had an entree !!
Jamie is the definition of Fearless. He is truly one w the wave.
there were way better sumbissions he j won because of his yt and his sponsors that how it went in like every section this year
He's on some Moana shit with the ocean. He does some remarkable and sometimes unexplainable things on a surfboard. Total legend
@@jacquescharvet2447 spot on mate, happens all the time
Dropping into a wall of water whose powerful purpose seems to be to knock up off, roll up from under you to pull you down, is one of the most beautiful things to me. I'll never get tired of watching. It makes the spirit inside me, trapped by RA in this older physical body, SOAR. "Surfing" seems such an inadequate word for how it encourages me.
THANK YOU and all be safe.
Congratulations Reef! Congratulations Jamie!
So glad they gave Joao breakthrough performer. That guy was killing it!
Yes I couldn’t agree more. His waves were pretty awesome. Looks like pipe is in good hands with Joao coming through.
The intro to this video is, hands-down, the most incredible combination of scene-mixing, perfect music selection, and a wide-open playground for the spirit of surfing to come flooding in the listener. Magnificent. I've listened and watched this intro so many times, I figured I should toast the creators. Oh, one more thing ... Jamie O'Brian is so tight and smooth riding pipe, it boggles my mind. Hats off to all the surfers in that video, and a glass of dom for the makers of this video.
Sean Briley is a legend!! That was awesome! JOB still top level.
can we appreciate how deep chianka was in his last wave
Alessio Protano his backdoor and OTW waves were better than the wave of the decade imo haha
I honestly thought he should have won WOTW but Hawaiian judges have a tendency to favor locals. Jamie could have been deeper on his wave.
To get the wave of the day at Kirra and snapper is what i live for .JOB is the best surfer of the new .
Well diserved JOB !!! Reef's wave was obviously THE wave of the decade...
This video was so poorly edited. How can you not include the paddle and the drop???
Yeah. I'm not a fan of the ADD edits with frequent cuts of short clips.
they NEVER do, even though people have been commenting and asking them to do it for YEARS. Surfline blows.
As badly stitched together as their wetsuits
I am so psyched for Jamie.
Way too many entries now, not every wave at Pipe should be enter as a contender for Wave of the Winter , should only be the absolute bombs.
Go out there and catch one, every wave feels like the one
Was on the north shore this winter an I was absolutely amazed how many bombs JOB got... he really deserved it
Same it was insane I was there opening day of pipeline and was amazed by JOB
He proved that in the closet gay guys can surf too👍🏻
How was Kelly's Pipe Master doggy door wave not in there?
I was thinking this too
Although it was insanely long the surf was too small that day to be considered for WotW. It's gotta be like 10-12ft and Kelly's wave was like a 6fter
Love it
4:49 I've seen Pipeline like this and bigger. It breaks very close to shore and when Pipeline is a big, long period swell with offshore winds and front lit, it's on.
I would have tried it in my youth if it was a beach break. But with that shallow reef. No way.
Secretly joao chianca should have won every category...
Even though JOB is so goofy ,he can back it up.I love the guy...🏄♂️🏄♂️👍
Touch choices as Judges on which wave is the best. Sometimes it's obvious, other times there can be 5-10 all good choices.
ALOHA!!!
Jamie said stoked 😬
Great presentation
It’s funny that this year there was no question. JOB getting it done!!! PSYCHED!!!!!!
Reef McIntosh is officially the Nick Swardson of the surfing world.
Dude: drinks on you..
Reef: uuhhhaa Duuuhh..
what is the first song? its heat !! yewwww
Is wave of the winter limited to Pipe only?
Mainly just pipe backdoor an otw not really much entries from anywhere else
They do "Wave of the Winter Regional" which covers North and Southern California, East Coast spots, and many more. Each region has its own Wave of the Winter.
Keito should have won the decade.
How to make a video unwatchable? Start with an intro thats sooo sloooow and boring, then i dont know because i didnt watch the rest.
Is koas wave gonna be a contender for 2021
sater dee 4:19
Not according to the rules. The period for submissions for waves ridden is like between November and February. Koa's definitely bummed.
Almost died at the wedge today
@4:19 Koa Smith #193... gasp
I get that a few of these waves were more "critical" but honestly with all due respect to JOB's amazing wave, I think Slater's perfect 10 in the contest was better. So deep and so long.
we want to see all of the wave of the decade clips
Del Castillo's wave 3:42-3:47
2:16 to get to the actual rides - smh
Benji Brand lives in a barrel
Keito’s wave was so much bette than reefs for wave of the decade.... he got robbed
Facts I don’t think reefs was even that amazing to win, was a great wave forsure, but there was waaay better an more critical
100% agree
Anyone else notice that the WOW movie gets shorter every year?
Because the guys in the industry do it tougher and tougher every year. If they don't sell or make money their services and products will understandably reduce. #GetSpending
1:44
Benji Brand #93 5:11-5:16
have no idea how that was wave of the decade, Kelly or Jamie's waves were much much better. anybody could have rode that wave out, yeah it was the perfect one. but the wave of the decade should tick all the boxes. not just one.
koa rothmans wave is imo the best wotw so far
I just don't see it. So many better waves.
Koa Smith #193 4:19-4:26
So wait the judges were judging based on the person not the wave? They kept saying Jamie is just a hard working person and so determined blah blah blah. Just a popularity contest it seems. I saw some epic barrels in this compared to Jamie's...
I think the size and the late drop is what did it.
Cam Richards should’ve won this and last year.
@Surfline The Wave of the Winter contest has progressively gone down hill for many years. The video editing and overall feeling is terrible at best. While I love all the judges and they 100% know there stuff the Judges should be present Surfers in the line up at Pipe and on the North Shore each winter. A rotating judge panel if you will Reef, Jamie, Kalani, Luke Sheppardson, Mason Ho, Koa Rothman, Koa Smith, John John, Mark Healey and or Kelly. We need people in the water who see it going down. The best waves of the winter were not even included in this video. Ivan caught the wave of the winter 100% 1st big swell he made an insanely long barrel that closed out then opened back up on a late take off. Jamie put on a clinic in February on a glassy day he caught one of the best back door ever glassy clean amazing day...so many amazing rides...not one in this video. Get someone on the ground for the winter and try to do a better job representing what is actually happening on the North Shore every year.
Maybe past winners should be judges and allow a surfer to only win a category once, so we don't end up with JOB winning every year!
My calls - #81, #193, #207, #49, #167 and a bunch of similar JOB waves.
Another call - why are drone shots accepted? It's a shit angle!! Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
Can someone plzz tell jamie to surf more competitions and surf the wsl tour
Jaime has surfed in the Pipeline Masters, Volcom Pipe Pro, and Da Hui Backdoor Shoot-out, and has won each of them at one time or other. He was even surfed in the Eddie Aikau Invitational at Waimea Bay. But I don't think competitive surfing is really his thing. It's almost like a completely different mindset. Besides anywhere that doesn't barrel, to compete on the WSL, you have to pull off big airs. And I don't think he is in the same league in that category as Italo, Gabriel or John John.
competitive surf is overrated.
@@VideosMineiro ummmm its not exactly overrated. Though i guess jamie just does like free surfing and free surfing is alway amazing. But competitive is definitely not overrated
It gets a bit boring watching pipe all the time.
thankfully I can mute.
Worst one yet brah tf happened Jamie should of not one it was only cuz of his sponsors and his ur channel he is a good surfer and all but there were j better waves
