"If I can make people forget... whatever they're dealing with for...you know.. an hour or two hours every night.. that's nice" There you have it folks the sole reason to be a musician.
@Me He will always lack the widespread appeal of people like those. His music is heavy and dark, and has openly Satanic themes and imagery. These kinds of things will limit who your audience can be. Most people just want to have mindless fun with music they can dance to, or want to hear love songs. And I'm not saying Danzig is super inaccessible, but he is also not all that accessible.
+nogoodbastid I know, right? He usually comes off as a colossal ass, but he actually comes off as approachable, here. I'm surprised he didn't name check Iggy & The Stooges, myself--to me, they are the real spiritual fathers of punk rock as we know it.
+nogoodbastid Maybe that punch to the mouth that knocked his ass down did some good finally. I love the Misfits with all my heart and even like some stuff after Samhain, which I also like, but the guy always has been a douche canoe so I agree it's nice to see him for once not trying to play the peacock.
+Fecal Thunder That punch was 10 years ago. He was being a total dick long after that. I'm sure being a punk rocker growing up in Lodi, NJ (which people used to joke stands for Land Of Dumb Italians) he took his fair share of punches in his day. I've always thought that to be why Danzig has the stereotypical macho tough guy attitude. That was the environment he grew up in.
Ive met Glen three times, first time at a friends record store, hung out with him and his band for 5 hours, hes one cool guy,he just doesnt like stupid, who can blame him.
How can anyone not love Glenn Danzig. He has been the real deal since the 1970's. I never had the priviledge to attend a Misfits show, but I have been to a few Danzing concerts and he never fails to deliver. This is a real man. He has none of the pretentious bullshit, and that matters.
It's cool that he gives props to the Dolls and the Velvets as inspirational acts (and admits that Lou Reed probably wouldn't have remembered meeting him). A humble and soft-spoken guy, after all!
I caught his glove in the pit at a California concert . The glove is complete with the skull. He signed it a few years later at Tower Records in Hollywood. Framed and displaying the memory. Lots of blood in the pit that eve! Danzig is the shit!!
Glad to see Glenn drop the "tough-guy" act for this. It makes him much more likeable. We need more legends like him to be down to Earth and keep providing guidance for younger bands.
You music definitely lasts Glenn because I'm 21 and just started listening to the misfits a few years ago and it's my favorite band, definitely timeless music
I love reading shit like tbis! Glad you are listening! Read searcg discover. Watch. Eat up anything you can! The songs she, angelfuck, where eagles dare. So many more. Doyle has a couple instructional vids on youtube that are awesome
8 years ago I worked in a pizza kitchen and jammed misfits every morning. Front to back static age. People who didn't even like punk loved it. It's timeless like you said.
I really liked how mellow an real glenn was here. Now he's always been real but I have a lot more respect for him after hearing him talk about his early influences like that and what he aims to do by playing for fans. He deserves every bit of success that's come his way and has given the music community some legendary music that won't soon be forgotten. Great interview
This isn`t quite what I expected of Danzig to be honest. He`s actually a very softly spoken guy during this interview. Comes across as a genuine person. Thanks uploader :)
Gabe Dieter I think he did relax in an interview on Headbanger's Ball back in the early 90's and just joked around with the interviewer. I wish he would do it more and have fun in interviews.
mark kevorkian I don't think so, I remember him just talking about the newest Danzig album, the early days of Misfits and any future plans for a new solo album at the time. They also joked about the dark imagery and the religious people that bashed him for the messages in the music, or what they thought the message was.
Danzig needs a star on the walk of Fame and a wall full of Grammys. I got all his albums and are pretty much the only CDs I'll listen to front to back without skipping over tracks. This guy is truly a master of his art.
I don't get why people are so hung up on him being an ass. He's his own person, he speaks his mind , no filter, he has a personality. I like it. Better than being like everyone else and having the same ideas as everyone else.
It's not really that, that is the issue... It's his history of being a Dbag rockstar attitude type. something that isn't shinning through in this interview. maybe he's calmed down in his old age
Why a chill Glenn Danzig interview. I always thought thought he was a knucklehead w a chip on his shoulder. Nice to see him chillin and smiling, having a good time. Very down to earth.
+Luv Piggehs Wow, I guess I should just conform to whatever Danzig wants then. Don't worry about my own opinion if it pisses Danzig off right? Fuck that shit!
It might be because of his CRITICALLY acclaimed new film, Verotika! Right now it's sitting pretty at a 30% on Rotten Tomatoes, with all of the positive reviews actively shitting on it and comparing it to the Room! All of the actors are probably pornstars! You should watch it, it's terrible.
This man is a legend. I would say he definitely achieved his goal of producing timeless music. Im the type that I cant listen to the same songs i loved years ago. As my preferences change from punk, to metal to death metal then to Beethoven later in life, I can still always come back to danzig
I met Glen after a Danzig show and he was very nice and soft spoken , when I met him I said ( you are the shit bro ) and he says (you wanted me to write it out to who ?) and then I repeated myself and he started laughing
The man was probably the one singer out of the whole punk scene who actually sang. That’s when after he was done with Samhain, he transitioned into metal with Danzig. Kudos to punk and hardcore don’t get me wrong love all that stuff. But it’s amazing how one person from a raw musical scene thanks to his vocals helped him get up there even more. Props to you Glenn!
Met him after a show in Knoxville,TN in 1994. He was a chill dude to put up with me and my buddy for a few minutes. Korn and Marilyn Manson opened up for him. Great show!
That last statement from Glenn was awesome. " If it helps people to forget about what they're dealing with for an hour or two then that feels great it's nice" 👍👍👍
I think Glenn's the real deal. He's first and foremost an artist and believes that music must convey authenticity and sincerity. This puts him aeons ahead of most bands and musicians whose sole motive is attention, fame, money-and NOT artistic expression. Glenn rightly pointed out that we've been spoon-fed a steady diet of blandness and mediocrity- that we've falsely been led to believe is good music. In truth, most of what passes as "good" pop music is in fact dull, unoriginal and commonplace. Glenn gave us something much more powerful, fresh and original. No wonder he encountered so much rejection. Sadly, most folks want safe and predictable. Frank Zappa famously said "Without deviation from the norm, progress is impossible." You can't have authenticity, originality, power and integrity if you're sole intent is fame and glory and your music is an afterthought.
Malcolm Nicoll The Misfits would have been singed to label for their first LP (Static Age) had they toned it down and went with a more "studio friendly" sound. I'm glad they didn't. Even after Glenn's old stuff has been deemed classic, I admire that he's never taken the safe route and fallen back on any particular era.
+Eloel To quote Glenn's fellow musician/friend Henry Rollins: “I wonder if it ever occurred to people that the reason the music of these interesting and alternative bands is being recruited [for advertisements] is because their fans are now the ones calling the shots. In other words, we have arrived. Of course the ad is trying to sell you something, and to gain your confidence by exploiting the band’s integrity for a commercial end. So what? You’re not a fucking moron, are you? You see through that, don’t you? What would you rather hear? Iggy and the Teddy Bears doing ‘I’m a Punk Rocker’ in a car ad, or enduring some generic background music? Do you have any idea what some of these bands went through to make that music? The fact that there might be some money for them all these years later is great. You think that paycheck is in anyway a slight to their integrity? Are you fucking kidding me? Pay them. Pay them double. Pay them now. It’s about fucking time!”
+Malcolm Nicoll Glenn's messages are always so weak. He is first and foremost a very shallow and self centered moron with a huge ego. Was his band original? Sort of. Was it good...? That is debatable. Is there any meaningful depth beyond a bone head trying to act "cool?" Depends who ya ask.
i just love Glenn Danzig so much! I don't care what people say about him like having this big attitude thing or whatever, he's a punk rocker, so of course he have the big attitude and that's what i love about him, oh and specially his voice ❤️
I got to see him and the bros in Chicago this yr on my bday for the original misfits tours. And as happy as I was for opportunity see them, I'm also sooo sad to think I may never again. Please do one more year!
I've never met Mr. Danzig but, from what I've read and listened to, I like him. He seems the genuine sort that tries his best and cares about people. That's the making of a pretty good person. Keep rocking, Mr. Danzig.
Glenn man, this guy pretty much shaped the life i lived in the early 90s when i first heard him with the misfits. Ive always made the argument (to this day) the Misfits are the true fathers of "punk rock". Long live Glenn!
Well Glenn, you might be happy to know that is why I tune in, to forget about who I am and my life for a little while. Your music and personality are very entertaining.
Misfits, Samhain, Danzig. Everything Glenn does is fuckin incredible. All his music lives in me every. Single. Day. Listened to the Misfits for 13 hours straight yesterday painting my basement. My own little London Dungeon, if you will.
Glen. You and the Misfits are still very relevant in 2020. My band covers songs from Walk Among Us as well as other singles. Thank you for writing these songs.
1:55 - And we're still coming back to it Glenn, we definitely are. Been on another Misfits binge the last few weeks. I can't get enough, the music is timeless. Can't wait to play it for my kids, along with The Doors, Young Thug, and Madlib.
I think Glen Danzig has been through a great deal and seen it all over the years. He’s matured into a much calmer, patient and respectful person with age, much like others in his field who’ve been lucky enough to survive. I realize after all these years that his east coast attitude and front man persona were much of the reason for the reputation that followed him around for so long. Much love to him and his art 🤟❤️
I love, love, LOVE The New York Dolls! Found out about them in 1980, have loved them ever since. I even had the opportunity to see Johnny Thunders play live in small clubs, twice! RIP Johnny 💔
First time I saw Danzig was in St Pete FL circa 1990. It was his 1st album tour. He didnt say anything between songs ... just played. The last song they played was the only Misfits song. I think it was Halloween. Anywho...a fight broke out in front of the stage. Song over, then Glen finally speaks. He says "It ain't cool to fight at shows. But if you do, make sure you win!"
It's sad to see the footage of the Riot Fest Misfits set in Denver because the crowd is too worried about getting video on their phones than the experience of seeing such an Iconic band. Those people should be going nuts and tearing that place down. Sign of the times.
That shit is so sad. It shows that they are more thrilled with the idea of being able to say that they saw the misfits live than actually seeing them live. I went to see rush when I was in high school and I did that with a camera, I realized how stupid I was the second they stopped playing.
meh. if you could ignore the b.s., you could enjoy the show. it was amazing... and i still remember danzing being all like "we still have 8 minutes left". still not sure if he was happy or not happy about that,... but who gives a fuck. the music was.... it was fucking incendiary... in the best possible way (at least in my corner of the crowd).
Mr. Moon... ? Did I miss something ? What are you talking about his comment is dead on and normal people? !? Is that what you call cell phones at a concert?
And believe ME, the songs he wrote were definitely memorable and something I come back to every time. Metal flows in my veins but punk rock beats in my heart.
"If I can make people forget, whatever they are dealing with, for two hours every night... it's nice" - Glenn, you are wonderful. We are 138.
Amen... +1
it's a great quote from him. and I honestly believe it.
I'm not 138,.
David Phelan what nazi stuff?
David Phelan you’re definitely not black and I’m positive he doesn’t give a fuck
"If I can make people forget... whatever they're dealing with for...you know.. an hour or two hours every night.. that's nice"
There you have it folks the sole reason to be a musician.
social commentary and activism still puts the focus on a larger issue than your own problems.
Hahaha fucking hipsters with their "soshial commuhnterryyyy"
That is one of many great reasons to be a musician, not the sole reason.
I wonder if he was to fuck Sigourney Weaver is it the same as wanking off in the mirror.
That’s all.
haha I know, right? I was like, "what a lame thing to say."
His talking voice sounds so different than his singing voice

I hope you read this, GLENN. Thank you, So Much. Your music soothed my soul for countless hours. Now my son and I rock out to it! 🥰🤘
One of my biggest music influences. Wouldn’t have picked up the guitar and vocals if it wasn’t for Danzig and Hendrix!
Danzig is an interesting dude
I think Glen Danzig has been through a great deal and seen it all over the years. He’s matured into a much calmer, patient and respectful person with age, much like others in his field who’ve been lucky enough to survive. I realize after all these years that his east coast attitude and front man persona were much of the reason for the reputation that followed him around for so long.
Much love to him and his art 🤟❤️
I just listened to Danzig first album and it sounded so DOPE to hear it again after over 25 years
I love, love, LOVE The New York Dolls! Found out about them in 1980, have loved them ever since. I even had the opportunity to see Johnny Thunders play live in small clubs, twice! RIP Johnny 💔
He was a cool guy to meet. His bands were a huge influence on me, still are to some extent
I was there, lots of energy although the cell phone thing was a sad distraction
That shit is so sad. It shows that they are more thrilled with the idea of being able to say that they saw the misfits live than actually seeing them live. I went to see rush when I was in high school and I did that with a camera, I realized how stupid I was the second they stopped playing.
meh. if you could ignore the b.s., you could enjoy the show. it was amazing... and i still remember danzing being all like "we still have 8 minutes left". still not sure if he was happy or not happy about that,... but who gives a fuck. the music was.... it was fucking incendiary... in the best possible way (at least in my corner of the crowd).
Chicago was crazy. I was right in front. Now I have now pictures of the show but instead imprinted memories I will never forget.
Mr. Moon... ? Did I miss something ? What are you talking about his comment is dead on and normal people? !? Is that what you call cell phones at a concert?
And believe ME, the songs he wrote were definitely memorable and something I come back to every time. Metal flows in my veins but punk rock beats in my heart.
I had never listed to the Misfits growing up; got into them in 20 years ago when I was 38. Now they are one of my all time favorites
One of the better interviews of Danzig
I am a misfits fan for ever
Danzig's lesser known songs such as Less Than Zero and Life Fades Away (which was sung by Roy Orbison) are excellent. Talented songwriter.
not to mention Thirteen, his song for Cash
Still listen to the misfits every day 🤘🤘
Mr Glen is who he is
And what a fantastic gift he is .
ANYBODY that hates journey is ok in my book
lol, same here
You made a great band. Thanks for that Danzig.
This guys a genius and so under rated!
Misfits songs never get old, still listen to them all the time. Along with the Graves era as well.
Thanks GD for all the music and great shows . Legend!
One of the best concerts. Danzig kills it live.
Especially now, he used to not know how the mic pics up his voice but now he’s got it figured out better than a lot of big bands
Ya know Glenn really is a good guy:) the ending touched my heart
Glen Danzig has always been a interesting cat..... he never really sold his soul to be more a mainstream star which you gotta respect
Saw him live, with the Misfits, best show ive seen in a while!!!!
I never really liked Glenn dancing. But I like his music and him more and more. He's a good dude so it seems smart guy
I had no idea that the Misfits started out at CBGBs. That's so nostalgic.
