This is honestly a great realworld review. One of my biggest issues with Windows Laptop is just the terrible state of windows standby, the battery life alone is a serious consideration.
@@derekhatakelunar lake is compelling. Also pretty much exclusively for Ultrabooks so that's where I would get a little hesitant. Because I'm going to drop 1200 bucks on Ultrabook... I probably consider talking myself into getting something with a dedicated GPu. I mean it's not an easy choice, I'm not a huge PC gamer I'm going to spend $1,200 bucks I certainly don't want to bottleneck myself too much. But I mean in that sense though it's a good thing to cross sho0 with a macbook. Because a Mac is obviously bottlenecking any kind of gaming options. But that is the downside to these ultrabook type things is that if you do decide you want to engage in PC gaming you need to buy a second machine. I suppose a lot of people buying these though already own a desktop PC and these are just for mobile purposes

@@derekhatake The proportion of normal users who wants to use their laptops as actual portable machines and not a glorified Desktop PC with a backup battery is like 10000:1. Don't forget that not only do windows laptops not last as long but their performance on the battery get annihilated which makes them unusable beyond web browsing even with a good battery. Windows laptops are just PCs with a battery that lets you move from one desk to another without having to shut down your device.

And it's still quite mediocre compared to x64 Windows. For ARM processors Mac is better prepared. They did the hard force to change but that resulted in a more compatible OS. Windows ARM is still very green.
I faced a lot of the same issues when I switched a few years ago, but you get used to the Mac way of working and you can’t go back. Using multiple desktops, swiping between apps, the shortcuts etc. It’s just that we were used to Windows and need to allow ourselves time to adjust. Window management is better in the latest macOS, but the best I’ve found is a little app called swish, and it kind of uses the trackpad to manage windows. It’s seriously good even better than the windows one for me. Rivals some of the Linux ones. Definitely dive into the settings for that app though.
Just purchased the MacBook M3 Pro 18 gigs ram, it’s no joke. Compared to using my previous Windows laptops. It lags, hiccups and slows down really fast on top of the bloat ware of windows. Mac is just a breath of fresh air, I really don’t care much to play games on it but get my work done fast and without much headache. It’s been so good the past few weeks and I would tell you not to knock it before you try it. Battery life is otherworldly, this things lasts 4-5 days on a full charge with my use cases it can be more if I used it a bit more lightly. The benefits are truly game changing.

I installed asahi then immediately switched back because I finally realized that basic things like the trackpad and resolution not working is something I don't have to deal with anymore with MacOS, which were things I was immediately confronted with on asahi.
Big fan of Moom myself but Magnet is alright too if you want something free. There's a big culture of also paying for software on MacOS that might take some getting used to.
The thing about having a charged battery in your previous laptop & then it suddenly being dead in a few hours is a Windows thing as it doesn't let laptops go to sleep properly which causes it to be active all the time even when idling which discharges the battery quickly
The closing statement is what got me lol, I was once (not even that long ago) firmly in the "why would I even buy an apple product when it's so overpriced compared to anything else?" camp. Then I got the iPhone 12 and yeah it was expensive, but I don't think I can ever go back to Android. This thing just ... works, and the integration with other Apple products I've bought since is straight up incredible to use. Still haven't (and might never) bought a macbook though, because I do like gaming so I'll need a PC regardless, so when my options are a PC upgrade or a whole new second system, I just can't even begin to justify it.
Mac’s get the hate for being pricey and not upgradable. BUT. If you’re a programmer or editor, they’re beasts. They also last incredibly long with no need for an upgrade. If you’re looking for one I suggest a pro solely because it has fans. Chips and storage is up to you. Trackpad is flawless. Mac OS is truly infinitely better than the others.

I wanted the macbook build quality and minimal looks while still being able to play. Ended up getting a used Razer Blade with a 3070 for 650 euros and couldn't be happier. Completely understand people going for macbook's though.

Biggest mistake everyone coming from Microsoft makes with MacOS is wanting it to work EXACTLY like Windows. But MacOS is Unix and if you take the time to learn the gestures and key commands you find that it can be faster. But take the time to explore all the settings for the apps you use most. Like Finder, you can make finder works in about 8 different ways so explore them all and see which works best for you. Don’t ignore the accessibility options as well like the added 3 finger drag option that is hidden in the accessibility menu. But it’s frustrating at first when you are so use to doing things one way and it’s different in the Unix world. Also go into the chrome flags and turn off partial swap and Chrome won’t use any swap and save your SSD. Chrome uses up to 8 Gb of Swap no matter how much RAM your system has.

Made the same switch for similar reasons back in 2017. Bought a late 2013 15" MBP I still use today... The quality of the screens and trackpads really make these machines. I've also come to love MacOS and never dream of going back to Windows where everything seemed to be a struggle to get working how you wanted.
You can turn on tapping on the trackpad in settings. Another feature you might find useful is two finger tap = right click that you can also turn on in the trackpad settings.

I made the transition in 2022, and even coming from a 2019 HP Envy I felt all the same things you did, but now I look back at Windows and don’t know why I spent so long hating Mac and simultaneously dealing with Windows issues all the time lol
I originally did all of my work on a custom built Windows PC. Switched to the M1 MacBook Air in 2021. Edited plenty of client music videos on it. Gave it to my GF and bought this exact base model 16 in you have and been using it since!! It does all the work I need and more tbh. I do want to get the M4 Pro mini to have as another work computer that stays at home and have this laptop for travel, though. So hopefully I can get that soon! I love Apple Silicon if I'm being honest.
12:45 I mean honestly if you're saying you spent $1K on this thing, the closest comparison probably isn't a used XPS. The Snapdragon X machines that came out this year can be found for around the $1K mark and supposedly have stellar battery life (although they certainly have their own problems haha), and I wouldn't be shocked if you could find an Intel Lunar Lake or Ryzen AI machine for a similar price on sale right now, both of which are miles ahead of the usual crop of Windows machines. The Windows world still can't compete with the higher end M3 and M4 chips, but I wouldn't be surprised if a new machine from this year's lineup could come close to an M1 Pro MacBook Pro at this point. It's a really interesting time in the laptop space right now.
I got a bottom spec M2 mac mini about two years ago and it has been an awesome content consumption, chatting, and sysadmin machine for me. The trackpad support is so good that even on the desktop I use one of apples bluetooth ones (the first gen that takes AA batteries so it's never gonna "expire" like the current ones do) ((also have a ploopy on order for use with my linux machine at work)). I realised that a lot of days I didn't actually do anything that demanded my gaming PC and it's just loud and warm for no reason then.
Great snag on your part. I got an M1 Max 14 inch 32GB RAM and 1TB storage with Applecare for $1500 after taxes and no regrets so far. Paying retail price for similar spec feels like robbery but I have been loving every minute of what MacOS Sequoia has to offer. Whether it be the ability to access my NAS in Finder just by clicking connect and using the local login credentials, the photo editing features from the photos app, amazing battery, window management that imitates Windows, and the ability to airdrop photos from my phone to my Macbook to slap in word documents? I will find it hard to go back to my Framework after this experience.
I bought a 2018 MacBook Pro 15" in 2018 for $2800. I thought this would last me at least 6 years in the eco system. Nope, two years later it was obsolete and couldn't keep up with the M1 MacBook Air.
in case you didn't know, you can enable tap to click in trackpad settings. also macOS sequoia has snap style window management (i'm told it took this long because of a microsoft patent on it applying to operating systems). gaming wise, if you have *any* interest in the resident evil series, 4 remaster, 7, and 8 are on the mac app store. they have HDR support and oh. my god is it gorgeous on these. honestly, any game that supports macOS and HDR is worth playing on these computers because man is it a treat to the eyes.
I feel ya, I never thought I would buy a macbook but I wanted a laptop that was small, light, quiet, with all day battery life with decent performance... so I got a macbook air m1 on discount. It has served its purpose well and did require an adjustment period but man for a work laptop (im a teacher so nothing too heavy) it works great. I would like a framework but those are also very expensive
As a Thinkpad user of 20 years, I too got bit by the Apple ease of use, it just works, and it works well philosophy. And as an M1 Pro user myself I managed to get the 14" Model here in the UK for £695 and have not looked back. This machine flies through anything I throw at it, and has been my go to for the last few months of ownership. Great Video my friend! :)
I remember when i first got my m1 air. shit was magic and i was in love at first sight. I had a few windows laptop before, and sure they're cool. but the engineering and quality of a macbook is truly different. even when people showed me their expensive windows laptops (like the envy or xps), the macbook just has something to it that makes it feel out of this world. anyways, im hoping i can rock 6 more years outta mine. got it in 2022, and it has been holding up. such a great little machine.
The trackpad is the best out there. You cannot compare it to a PC / Windows laptops trackpad. You just cannot. Check the settings and configure it the way you want. :)
9:23 You can double tap the top of the window on most apps to enter full screen, I found that when learning MacOS on a M series Laptop. If that doesn’t work, it’s likely double tapping on the edges that show the arrows will, and if that doesn’t, the newest MacOS added proper full screen (That isn’t quite fullscreen, there’s a small border around each app, if you don’t like any of these solutions, get a 3rd party app)
I hated on Mac’s in general for the over 25 years. Now that I’m older, I value security and resale value over customization and upgradability. I finally gave it a try and find that it works really well especially since I’m an iPhone user. It’s so convenient and I upgrade ever a couple of years or so since I always get the base value which holds its resale value a lot better.
i got an i9 16 incher w/ 64gb of ram for 550 bucks, been a windows user my whole life. Battery life sucks and it runs hot as balls but for the price I paid the screen and everything else more than makes up for it. Good laptop, i9 is still a screamer for my daily asks & metric ton of chrome windows.
Honestly I blame laptop manufacturers for not providing tools to make Linux efficient on laptops and Windows for having horrible power management. On the other hand it's incredible how compatible the M chips are given the fact that they are using ARM
Being able to open the screen with one finger is, btw, a very very easy mod on all newer thinkpads (by newer i mean 2015+). You can adjust the torque of the hinges arbitrarily and I have all mine set to open like macbooks.
A few quick UI tips for people new to macOS: 1. You can get tap-to-click back in trackpad settings. I don't know why Apple doesn't have this on by default. They did the same stupid thing with right-click on their mouse for years when it could have just been on by default. 2. You can double click the top gray area of any app window to make it full-screen without making a separate desktop view. Or you can option-click the green traffic light button. 3. cmd + tab to switch between applications. cmd + tilde to switch between open windows within one application.
Also double tap the top border area of a window to full screen it without popping into that separate desktop view - the biggest problem with Macs are all the details that are never explained. Like adding the file path bar to the bottom of a finder window, or making the search bar in a finder window search the current folder* you’re in and not the entire laptop… anyway, there’s for sure a learning curve and some quirkiness but I don’t think I can ever do a non-Mac laptop again …desktops are a different story though 🙃
Welcome to the ecosystem, I also once hated Apple but there's nothing like a MacBook which is so capable in such a small size factor. I bought an m3 pro at a good price but then I swapped it for a binned m3 max for a very good price (for being an Apple product) and man this thing is just simply a war machine. The OS while not being Linux by being Unix like is like feeling at home (so I don't have to deal with that windows garbage) and the raw power which these machines are capable to provide it's just on another level. Btw considering that you're on a m1 series chip, you should definitely check Asahi Linux.
The old adage of "Time is money" and "you need the right tool for the job" tends to play out best on Apple. Yes, they are a fortune. It's an investment though, when you notice that on Ebay, used ones are still pricey. They hold their value pretty well. Plus, you can always trade in with Apple for credit towards a new one. Takes the edge off the high price a bit but, it's still a high price. You will most likely keep it for 5 years though. Maybe more between upgrades. I wouldn't go past 5 myself, and would really do 3. So you get the most back during a trade in as possible. However, on the M chips. You can get away with longer times due to them being so freaking good. A jump from M1 to M4 would be worth it. But not from say M2 or 3. Enjoy it sir. They are great computers.
Yeah I'm in the same boat as you, I really hate the fact that Apple seems to be the only company making really high quality laptops. I'd even be fine with a not that great battery life and the wonkiness you usually get with a regular laptop + linux but I'd at least like another company to make a laptop with the same build quality as a macbook, that just doesn't seem to exist at all.
i just really hate mac os. feels weird using excel and the window snapping is limited. not to mention I can't just windows button run whatever. the dock is awful and programs don't close when I want them to.

Every so often best buy has been dropping new M2 MacBook air's to around $750! They come with 16gb of ram but the downside is the 256gb ssd. I got this machine a week ago and absolutely love it and ended up getting a 1tb external ssd.
I got a pretty cheap intel mac just to test the waters, and the window management was hard to get used to. My suggestion is installing Rectangle, you'll have window management and snap thingies working pretty nicely (:
I got an MacBook Pro (2021) 14-inch - Apple M1 Pro 8-core and 14-core GPU - 16GB RAM - SSD 512GB for $879 on Backmarket!!!! Best decision, got tired of Windows laptops unreliability (just kept glitching and breaking down).
I'd say it shows the state of the windows ecosystem, with Microsoft and their Anti-consumer practices especially in recent times, most vendors following the trends of Apple to a point much like the smartphone market, and the Thinkpad line being sold out to Lenovo with them gradually transforming it into the antithesis of what it stood for.
Me watching this after switching from a 128gb RAM, 16 Core Ryzen and 8TB nvme to a used $500 M1 Pro 16gb ram and 512 storage. Macbooks are so good, i regret not getting one sooner for my work. But I agree with MacOs 😂
about the phone charging issue, you probably just have a bunch of dust and grime stuck in the charging port. I usually clean my charging port every 6 months or so because stuff gets in there so easily. A simple metal needle should do the job really well.
See if video editing software was better optimized for CUDA or for CPU rendering the disparity wouldn’t be so bad. Even premiere is way more optimized on Mac not even including Davinci or Final Cut. If all you need is video editing Macs can do it faster, while on the go, and depending how long your edit is, on a single charge not plugged in.
I have a base model M1 MacBook Air since 2021. Still runs great and fast enough for me for what I do. But running out of storage. Using an external Thunderbolt 3 enclosure (Acasis) with a 2TB Samsung 990 Evo SSD and it’s as fast as the internal storage!
Just max the ram and the storage out when u buy, and u dont need to worry about upgrades, and ofc no need to worry about things breaking like the chinapads.
Ryzen 7840 and HX 370 are almost on par with ARM (including Apple Silicon) in terms of efficiency, can game and don't suffer from compatibility issues. Sure, the sleep issues you refer to are very annoying, but it's not an issue with the chip itself, but with Microsoft who randomly axed S3 and refuse to bring it back. In other words, it's a silly and easily fixable software issue.
Did you ever try using a fine needle or something of that nature to clean lint out of the Pixel 7's charge port? If you haven't, it will improve the reliability of the charging connection exponentially!
with games, i believe people got elden ring working with the game porting tool kit. so you may want to mess with that and see if you can get other window games working. I believe they had elden ring playing 60fps high settings on an air, so your pro would crush it too
The Mac O.S. just runs better. Smoother. Way better, won't be messing with computers all the time. Mac is STABLE. Perhaps because its a enclosed system with less part designers involved. Less suppliers. They work as "one". But once you are in the ecosystem you are stuck. And you'll have limited options once you are stuck. I'd avoid mac if you are doing cad work or anything similar that really needs to be on x86. Or avoid mac if you want to tweak your system. But yeah, mac will generally just run. Flawlessly
I'm over here rocking a 16 year old macbook pro from 2009 and it still works fine for me. I have edited 1080p videos in Final Cut Pro X and Photoshopped shitty things in it as-well. I have Microsoft Office 2011 and a modern web browser that has rendering issues. Borderline what are you doing complaining about laptops that are 5-8 times more powerful then my 16 year old mac.

The newest version of MacOS actually solved the lack of window managment. Now it woriks just like in windows.

I used to be a thinkpad guy. I had a T420 that lasted me nearly a decade. My current daily driver is an M2 Max MBP. In the end, they get all of us.

I installed asahi then immediately switched back because I finally realized that basic things like the trackpad and resolution not working is something I don't have to deal with anymore with MacOS, which were things I was immediately confronted with on asahi.

Big fan of Moom myself but Magnet is alright too if you want something free. There's a big culture of also paying for software on MacOS that might take some getting used to.
The thing about having a charged battery in your previous laptop & then it suddenly being dead in a few hours is a Windows thing as it doesn't let laptops go to sleep properly which causes it to be active all the time even when idling which discharges the battery quickly
The closing statement is what got me lol, I was once (not even that long ago) firmly in the "why would I even buy an apple product when it's so overpriced compared to anything else?" camp. Then I got the iPhone 12 and yeah it was expensive, but I don't think I can ever go back to Android. This thing just ... works, and the integration with other Apple products I've bought since is straight up incredible to use. Still haven't (and might never) bought a macbook though, because I do like gaming so I'll need a PC regardless, so when my options are a PC upgrade or a whole new second system, I just can't even begin to justify it.

Mac’s get the hate for being pricey and not upgradable. BUT. If you’re a programmer or editor, they’re beasts. They also last incredibly long with no need for an upgrade. If you’re looking for one I suggest a pro solely because it has fans. Chips and storage is up to you. Trackpad is flawless. Mac OS is truly infinitely better than the others.

I have friends working in web development, software engineering, algorithm research and other decently deep areas of computer science (so not just code monkeys) and they are fine with the MacBooks.
Never owned MacBook, but looking to buy one. It's amazing performance and build to last.
I wanted the macbook build quality and minimal looks while still being able to play. Ended up getting a used Razer Blade with a 3070 for 650 euros and couldn't be happier. Completely understand people going for macbook's though.
If I gamed more on my laptop I would really consider a gaming laptop, but the battery life when not gaming leaves a lot to be desired.

Biggest mistake everyone coming from Microsoft makes with MacOS is wanting it to work EXACTLY like Windows. But MacOS is Unix and if you take the time to learn the gestures and key commands you find that it can be faster. But take the time to explore all the settings for the apps you use most. Like Finder, you can make finder works in about 8 different ways so explore them all and see which works best for you. Don’t ignore the accessibility options as well like the added 3 finger drag option that is hidden in the accessibility menu. But it’s frustrating at first when you are so use to doing things one way and it’s different in the Unix world. Also go into the chrome flags and turn off partial swap and Chrome won’t use any swap and save your SSD. Chrome uses up to 8 Gb of Swap no matter how much RAM your system has.
You could get a refurbished MacBook Pro on the official store, and they're basically "good as new" or just used for exposition.

Made the same switch for similar reasons back in 2017. Bought a late 2013 15" MBP I still use today... The quality of the screens and trackpads really make these machines. I've also come to love MacOS and never dream of going back to Windows where everything seemed to be a struggle to get working how you wanted.

I made the transition in 2022, and even coming from a 2019 HP Envy I felt all the same things you did, but now I look back at Windows and don’t know why I spent so long hating Mac and simultaneously dealing with Windows issues all the time lol
I originally did all of my work on a custom built Windows PC. Switched to the M1 MacBook Air in 2021. Edited plenty of client music videos on it. Gave it to my GF and bought this exact base model 16 in you have and been using it since!! It does all the work I need and more tbh. I do want to get the M4 Pro mini to have as another work computer that stays at home and have this laptop for travel, though. So hopefully I can get that soon! I love Apple Silicon if I'm being honest.
I'm rocking a 2020 13" M1 MBP (16/512) and it is a great laptop, and it just works for everything you could possibly want out of a laptop.
12:45 I mean honestly if you're saying you spent $1K on this thing, the closest comparison probably isn't a used XPS. The Snapdragon X machines that came out this year can be found for around the $1K mark and supposedly have stellar battery life (although they certainly have their own problems haha), and I wouldn't be shocked if you could find an Intel Lunar Lake or Ryzen AI machine for a similar price on sale right now, both of which are miles ahead of the usual crop of Windows machines.
The Windows world still can't compete with the higher end M3 and M4 chips, but I wouldn't be surprised if a new machine from this year's lineup could come close to an M1 Pro MacBook Pro at this point. It's a really interesting time in the laptop space right now.

I got a bottom spec M2 mac mini about two years ago and it has been an awesome content consumption, chatting, and sysadmin machine for me. The trackpad support is so good that even on the desktop I use one of apples bluetooth ones (the first gen that takes AA batteries so it's never gonna "expire" like the current ones do) ((also have a ploopy on order for use with my linux machine at work)).
I realised that a lot of days I didn't actually do anything that demanded my gaming PC and it's just loud and warm for no reason then.
Great snag on your part. I got an M1 Max 14 inch 32GB RAM and 1TB storage with Applecare for $1500 after taxes and no regrets so far. Paying retail price for similar spec feels like robbery but I have been loving every minute of what MacOS Sequoia has to offer. Whether it be the ability to access my NAS in Finder just by clicking connect and using the local login credentials, the photo editing features from the photos app, amazing battery, window management that imitates Windows, and the ability to airdrop photos from my phone to my Macbook to slap in word documents? I will find it hard to go back to my Framework after this experience.
My 2012 unibody Macbook pros runninf sequoia or sonoma flawlessly still. Open core legacy is amazing. My M1 Max still runs like its new

in case you didn't know, you can enable tap to click in trackpad settings. also macOS sequoia has snap style window management (i'm told it took this long because of a microsoft patent on it applying to operating systems). gaming wise, if you have *any* interest in the resident evil series, 4 remaster, 7, and 8 are on the mac app store. they have HDR support and oh. my god is it gorgeous on these.
honestly, any game that supports macOS and HDR is worth playing on these computers because man is it a treat to the eyes.
I feel ya, I never thought I would buy a macbook but I wanted a laptop that was small, light, quiet, with all day battery life with decent performance... so I got a macbook air m1 on discount. It has served its purpose well and did require an adjustment period but man for a work laptop (im a teacher so nothing too heavy) it works great. I would like a framework but those are also very expensive

As a Thinkpad user of 20 years, I too got bit by the Apple ease of use, it just works, and it works well philosophy. And as an M1 Pro user myself I managed to get the 14" Model here in the UK for £695 and have not looked back. This machine flies through anything I throw at it, and has been my go to for the last few months of ownership. Great Video my friend! :)
I remember when i first got my m1 air. shit was magic and i was in love at first sight. I had a few windows laptop before, and sure they're cool. but the engineering and quality of a macbook is truly different. even when people showed me their expensive windows laptops (like the envy or xps), the macbook just has something to it that makes it feel out of this world.
anyways, im hoping i can rock 6 more years outta mine. got it in 2022, and it has been holding up. such a great little machine.
The newest macOS gives you window management features or you can install Rectangle to get a bunch of shortcuts and (I believe) drag-to-edge behaviour.
The trackpad is the best out there. You cannot compare it to a PC / Windows laptops trackpad. You just cannot. Check the settings and configure it the way you want. :)

If that doesn’t work, it’s likely double tapping on the edges that show the arrows will, and if that doesn’t, the newest MacOS added proper full screen (That isn’t quite fullscreen, there’s a small border around each app, if you don’t like any of these solutions, get a 3rd party app)
I hated on Mac’s in general for the over 25 years. Now that I’m older, I value security and resale value over customization and upgradability. I finally gave it a try and find that it works really well especially since I’m an iPhone user. It’s so convenient and I upgrade ever a couple of years or so since I always get the base value which holds its resale value a lot better.
the tap on tachpad can work if you enable it in the settings.
i got an i9 16 incher w/ 64gb of ram for 550 bucks, been a windows user my whole life. Battery life sucks and it runs hot as balls but for the price I paid the screen and everything else more than makes up for it. Good laptop, i9 is still a screamer for my daily asks & metric ton of chrome windows.

Honestly I blame laptop manufacturers for not providing tools to make Linux efficient on laptops and Windows for having horrible power management. On the other hand it's incredible how compatible the M chips are given the fact that they are using ARM
Being able to open the screen with one finger is, btw, a very very easy mod on all newer thinkpads (by newer i mean 2015+). You can adjust the torque of the hinges arbitrarily and I have all mine set to open like macbooks.

A few quick UI tips for people new to macOS: 1. You can get tap-to-click back in trackpad settings. I don't know why Apple doesn't have this on by default. They did the same stupid thing with right-click on their mouse for years when it could have just been on by default. 2. You can double click the top gray area of any app window to make it full-screen without making a separate desktop view. Or you can option-click the green traffic light button. 3. cmd + tab to switch between applications. cmd + tilde to switch between open windows within one application.

Also double tap the top border area of a window to full screen it without popping into that separate desktop view - the biggest problem with Macs are all the details that are never explained. Like adding the file path bar to the bottom of a finder window, or making the search bar in a finder window search the current folder* you’re in and not the entire laptop… anyway, there’s for sure a learning curve and some quirkiness but I don’t think I can ever do a non-Mac laptop again …desktops are a different story though 🙃

Welcome to the ecosystem, I also once hated Apple but there's nothing like a MacBook which is so capable in such a small size factor.
I bought an m3 pro at a good price but then I swapped it for a binned m3 max for a very good price (for being an Apple product) and man this thing is just simply a war machine.
The OS while not being Linux by being Unix like is like feeling at home (so I don't have to deal with that windows garbage) and the raw power which these machines are capable to provide it's just on another level.
Btw considering that you're on a m1 series chip, you should definitely check Asahi Linux.
The old adage of "Time is money" and "you need the right tool for the job" tends to play out best on Apple.
Yes, they are a fortune. It's an investment though, when you notice that on Ebay, used ones are still pricey. They hold their value pretty well.
Plus, you can always trade in with Apple for credit towards a new one. Takes the edge off the high price a bit but, it's still a high price. You will most likely keep it for 5 years though. Maybe more between upgrades. I wouldn't go past 5 myself, and would really do 3. So you get the most back during a trade in as possible.
However, on the M chips. You can get away with longer times due to them being so freaking good. A jump from M1 to M4 would be worth it. But not from say M2 or 3. Enjoy it sir. They are great computers.
Yeah I'm in the same boat as you, I really hate the fact that Apple seems to be the only company making really high quality laptops. I'd even be fine with a not that great battery life and the wonkiness you usually get with a regular laptop + linux but I'd at least like another company to make a laptop with the same build quality as a macbook, that just doesn't seem to exist at all.
i just really hate mac os. feels weird using excel and the window snapping is limited. not to mention I can't just windows button run whatever. the dock is awful and programs don't close when I want them to.

Every so often best buy has been dropping new M2 MacBook air's to around $750! They come with 16gb of ram but the downside is the 256gb ssd. I got this machine a week ago and absolutely love it and ended up getting a 1tb external ssd.
I got a pretty cheap intel mac just to test the waters, and the window management was hard to get used to. My suggestion is installing Rectangle, you'll have window management and snap thingies working pretty nicely (:

The Intel MacBooks before 2016 are unbelievably good. Upgradeable storage and capable of running latest MacOS with OpenCore Legacy, Linux, and Linux.
I'd say it shows the state of the windows ecosystem, with Microsoft and their Anti-consumer practices especially in recent times, most vendors following the trends of Apple to a point much like the smartphone market, and the Thinkpad line being sold out to Lenovo with them gradually transforming it into the antithesis of what it stood for.

about the phone charging issue, you probably just have a bunch of dust and grime stuck in the charging port. I usually clean my charging port every 6 months or so because stuff gets in there so easily. A simple metal needle should do the job really well.

See if video editing software was better optimized for CUDA or for CPU rendering the disparity wouldn’t be so bad.
Even premiere is way more optimized on Mac not even including Davinci or Final Cut.
If all you need is video editing Macs can do it faster, while on the go, and depending how long your edit is, on a single charge not plugged in.
I have a base model M1 MacBook Air since 2021. Still runs great and fast enough for me for what I do. But running out of storage. Using an external Thunderbolt 3 enclosure (Acasis) with a 2TB Samsung 990 Evo SSD and it’s as fast as the internal storage!

Ryzen 7840 and HX 370 are almost on par with ARM (including Apple Silicon) in terms of efficiency, can game and don't suffer from compatibility issues. Sure, the sleep issues you refer to are very annoying, but it's not an issue with the chip itself, but with Microsoft who randomly axed S3 and refuse to bring it back. In other words, it's a silly and easily fixable software issue.

Did you ever try using a fine needle or something of that nature to clean lint out of the Pixel 7's charge port? If you haven't, it will improve the reliability of the charging connection exponentially!

with games, i believe people got elden ring working with the game porting tool kit. so you may want to mess with that and see if you can get other window games working. I believe they had elden ring playing 60fps high settings on an air, so your pro would crush it too

The Mac O.S. just runs better. Smoother. Way better, won't be messing with computers all the time. Mac is STABLE. Perhaps because its a enclosed system with less part designers involved. Less suppliers. They work as "one". But once you are in the ecosystem you are stuck. And you'll have limited options once you are stuck. I'd avoid mac if you are doing cad work or anything similar that really needs to be on x86. Or avoid mac if you want to tweak your system.
But yeah, mac will generally just run. Flawlessly

I'm over here rocking a 16 year old macbook pro from 2009 and it still works fine for me. I have edited 1080p videos in Final Cut Pro X and Photoshopped shitty things in it as-well. I have Microsoft Office 2011 and a modern web browser that has rendering issues. Borderline what are you doing complaining about laptops that are 5-8 times more powerful then my 16 year old mac.
