"Professor" Sugarfoot, aka Mr Leroy Bonner. This was truly one of the funkiest bands ever, lead by Mr Incomparable himself. There was no Ohio Players with him. Ohio has produced some of the best Musicians in the history of music. Rest well Sir.
I had the chance of meeting Sugarfoot at a concert many decades ago while on a date. He signed a napkin and I gave it to my date. Musically, the Ohio Players influenced me greatly. If I had to pick which song I liked the best is, "Heaven must be like this."
My favorite song from them ended up being - "Heaven must be like this"... What woman wouldn't want to hear THAT wispered into her ear... I replaced it with my next in line heart felt song, "I got you babe"...

Mr. Bonner (Sugarfoot) is the very first person when I think of Funk.. what a presence.. what a unique voice.. God bless you Sugarfoot.. after I go see my Parents in Heaven I will make sure to go to see you perform. R.I.P.
Yes, Sugarfoot was just a once in a lifetime person. Talented to say the least. He's one of the few who was just born with funk in his soul, and he rolled with it. You could never replace an artist like Sugar, you only could hope to find a close second or third. Also, the lady hosting this video is D-LISHOUS!!! Very nice and easy on the eyes. haha (Just had to say that)
Lucky you ! I saw the "K.C. and The Sunshine Band" with "Cheech and Chong" at the "Circle Star", at the same age and time. None of kids believed me at school about seeing Cheech and Chong but I told them the skits they did. Sime time after that "Up in Smoke" came out, and some of their skits pertained to what happened in the movie. They even did "My mama's talking to me tryin to tell me how to live. But I don't listen to her cause my head is like a seive". CRA CRA ! My mother was shocked to know that they were there but she let me go with my sisters. Fun Times !
@@maryvelneelemantenaya1966 Cool. Also, I seen the Isley Brothers at the Coliseum and Smoky Robinson at the Circle Star.We would endeavor a parent to take us.This was 75-76.Money can't buy those experiences and memories.
@@palitsalagivickers4588 O.M.G. The Isleys... Another Favorite !!! I LOVE "Atlanis, Harvest for the World, and Summer Breeze" in particular. I also got to see the Spinners with my mom at the Circle Star. At the end thay had these HUGE rubber bands, ha ha ! My other favorite was the Temptations because of the stellar moves... My girlfriend saw the Jackson 5 in 1972 at the Circle Star... I was soooo jealous ! Great times man, great times... Peace !
Rip sugar foot...he loved my mom at first sight we was walking off the bus that had air conditioner and they said everybody had to leave so the Ohio players could cool off and he grabbed my mother's hand and pulled her backstage and she grabbed my hand and brought me with her..that was the stone soul picnic 1997 Baltimore MD...we was on stage when they said the prayer before the show and when he performed the song "fire" he actually did a trick with a ball of flames flying into the air
Wonder why people seem to need to refer to sampling...as if this magnificent artist or group needs that for validation. RIP Sugarfoot, we will miss you.
Sugarfoot.. Diamond.... Billy beck ..... marshall jones Clarence satchel ....Merv pierce...pee wee middlebrook are all the original members of the Ohio players and always will be
@@thepromiseman7745 so that long time members, lol they all got in the band in 74, players had the first hits in like 71 or 72 if you google Marshall Jones, he was the LAST living member of the OP and he just died, no more left, the guys that you know are long term but definitely not orignal tho
@@gymmaster9771 marshall Jones was like really the last one that died .. sugarfoot kept the group going till 2013 I remember when sugarfoot was actually still playing guitar than over the years he didn't play guitar anymore during live performances the last time I seen them live the only original members that we're there was sugarfoot ... James diamond williams and Billy beck ... But marshall Jones stayed with OP till probably early 80,s
...Uhhhh, no. They changed the name to "players" because group members (especially Sugarfoot) were known to have "many girlfriends" at once...hence the name "players" as in "pimps and playas". Dayton had a health "pimp scene", back in the 60's and 70's :-)
All I know is...you can it "oldies" if you want to, but I call the good stuff back then my modern therapy, and O.P. still gets played helluva lot more by me than anything put out this millennium.

Loved Sugarfoot and the Ohio Players. Always thought Larry Blackmon from Cameo was a cheap imitation. Sugar was the original.
Let's start a "Fire!" And get The Ohio Players inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!”
Odd when they somehow miss The Best ~ Players... Them and "Grand Funk Railroad" - astounding 3 piece group ! Check "Inside Out"... Unbelievable...

Original Ohio player, My Faather is from Dayton , Ohio.
Man. Z I got family in Dayton Ohio
He said he ran away because he was hungry cause his mother had so many kids.
She used the word "anterpeurship" really? "Survival" would have better described Sugarfoot's need to play harmonica on the streets. RIP Mr. Bonner.
