I love thinking about hwo he films these videos, like at the beginning where he's running...dude had to set the camera down, film it, then go back and pick it up lol. Too funny.
Les Stroud, Survivorman used to (still does) do this. He was the only person on location surviving in an area and had to lug all that camera equipment around and do sooooo much extra walking to get the shots
Should try salting your shrimp to make it firmer. Buy frozen or none frozen shrimp, put it in a sandwich bag and cover it with either Hawaiian salt or regular salt and freeze it over night. It’ll cause the shrimp to firm up and will stay on your hook a lot better
When bait is cheap at the market, I buy a small bucket's worth and salt and dry it in the sun. This dehydrates all the bait totally. It becomes hard and dry. I store it in the bucket with a lid and it keeps for up to 1 year. When I go fishing i portion the amount i think i would need for the day and soak that in some water to re hydrate it. It will still be firm enough to stay on the hook for surf fishing. Also, being firm, you get quite a lot of bites per bait, improving your chance at hooking up.
First perch was a rainbow seaperch (hypsurus caryi); note the black mark on the base of the dorsal. Last perch was a striped seaperch (embiotoca lateralis); similar iridescence of the rainbow but darker, no dark blotches. Others were probably silvers. Hell yeah as soon as he said he was gonna have a second channel just for tips and tricks i got hyped. I’ve been watching for years and just started fishing this year.
I don't blame the dogs when one of them pees on my stuff. I blame the owner for letting them. Every time it has happened the owner was right there watching their dog and not even making an attempt to stop them... until they noticed me watching them.
You should check out Moslanding Ca. You'll mainly catch Rockfish, Sting Rays, sharks, and a bunch of random things. But if you go I recommend fishing of the jetty.
just a tip from trial and error. Dropper loop the top one. Figure eight the lower one. When the weight gets stuck the figure eight will break before the dropper loop since the dropper will slip before sinching down. If you dropper loop both you will eventually lose the whole rig. 30 years of using the dropper top / figure 8 lower.
Its been a year since I found this amazing channel. I don't even fish unfortunately even though I live in SoCal :(( but I watch these videos religiously. Love the amazing work you do 🙌
striped perch. you are right, mushy when cooked. however, they are very clean fish. excellent sashimi. a floral aroma. my wife will eat a pound just like that. all those spots! reminds me a couple of years ago I would be there all the time. now from boat but the surf has something special. I got washed out one day in March it was in the 40s cold!. Now I am in my 50s and think I want to go again.
That Rubber Lip Perch aka Butter-mouth is YUMM!! And their flesh is firm, especially when fried. They do like shrimp, especially Ghost shrimp. That was a surprise though catching that in the surf. Usually they're caught around kelp or rocky habitats like deep jetty's. Good catch!
Get some Gulp Camo Sandworms. They don’t call it Perch Crack for nothing. Carolina rig, #4 hook, 1” piece of Sandworm. If there are perch around, you will catch them non stop.
Last year it took me 6 trips to get my first bass and this year I’ve been skunked 4 times for bass and ocean fish. Just keep trying new things and you’ll get fish 🤙🏼
Matt. Skip the shrimp next. Just buy a small net the ones to get bait. The go down to the beach waterline and scoop when the water recedes. You'll find a lot of sandcrab. Use that for your perch bait.
VIDEO IDEA: I have an experimental rig idea where you make basically a high/low rig, but instead of a lead weight at the bottom you tie on a crab snare. That way you have a chance to catch the fish that get attracted to your crab bait. Maybe Berkeley sand worms for the hook baits so the crabs won't steal it.
i've thought about this but i was wondering if you would ever feel the fish? Maybe for a bigger live bait rig for like sharks but other than that i dont know if that would work. Does it work for you?
I think the hard part would be the timing. If you toss out a crab snare and wait 10 minutes to pull it, you have to hope you don’t get a fish during that time or you won’t get a full 10 minutes to soak the snare. If you find a good spot with a school of perch, you likely wouldn’t have enough time to effectively use a snare. That being said, I’m happy to be proven wrong
@@Nik-gh6gz I have only tried it once so far off a jetty with squid on a hook above the snare but it kept getting stolen. Need a bait the crabs are not interested in or keep the bait off the bottom somehow. Might be better casting from some rocks or the sand. A typical high/low rig uses like a 2 to 4oz. sinker so I thought it may be possible to notice the fish bite if you don't put too much weight on your snare. ???
@@scottgarcia1290 I see what you mean. I thought it could be a good option if the crabbing is at all slow, pausing to reel in a fish would be worth it. Guess I would not tie on a snare if I found a good school of fish. I thought Matt would be an excellent person to help test the rig idea. A perch and crab catch and cook would be nice.
I heard about PacificaFIsherman too and went to the spots he was talking about, I thought he was a cool dude, then I learned about what happened to him in the comments of his videos...so very messed up
Holy crap I just saw some pictures on the news articles. That skater bashed his head in 😢 I enjoyed his channel and wondered why there weren't new videos. Very sad turn of events.
I was in chinatown today and they had black rock fish which I have never seen on the East Coast. I'm going home to do a catch and cook with avocado and butter. My girlfriend thinks I'm hilarious.
I always use circle hooks not J hooks. That way the fish hook themselves. No need to set the hook. Plus, why didn't you use the tropical rubber lips for bait when you ran out?
Where all of the white water was and the waves were braking over is where you needed to be, more specifically just on the sides of them because it's a sandbar and things like sand eels and sand crabs live in the sandbars, fish will feed along the edges of them until the water covers them properly then they'll feed directly on top of it.
You're right the first was a rubber lipped perch the striped one is a striped sea perch. The little ones are silver perch. It's a mixed bag you could have made the 20 fish limit if you mixed them right and went to a smaller hook. Of the silvers a sabiki tipped with little pieces of shrimp could have got a limit fairly quick.
With the species with small mouths, a smaller piece of bait will help your hookup ratio tremendously. Hold one of those little fish in your hand and put a whole shrimp next to it's mouth. If the bait won't fit in it's mouth it makes it hard to hook them.
The 1st was a rainbow but it’s actually a striped seaperch I believe you’re thinking of (which he caught last). The lighter rainbows aren’t as common as the latter.

Make sure the salt dosent contain iodine. Fish don't like it.
How much longer does it last and I heard people add borax after its firm to keep moisture out.
I'm fishing with bait I salted last year. Salt is a preservative. It's lasts a long time.
When bait is cheap at the market, I buy a small bucket's worth and salt and dry it in the sun. This dehydrates all the bait totally. It becomes hard and dry.
