Forget D3, if Bungie was smarter about having game resets, we could be on D4: D1: Vanilla (plus small expansions), Taken King, Rise of Iron D2: Reset with Ghaul and Vanilla (plus small expansions), Forsaken, Shadowkeep. Insert some story about starting over in newer areas and we end up on Europa for the start of D3 D3: Reset on Europa for Beyond Light, Witch Queen, Lightfall. Insert a pre-confrontation with the Witness, resetting our characters for TFS/D4 D4: Final Shape & beyond This would have avoided any “sunsetting” as each game would have all the content and gear you earned and paid for, you could always go back and play it if you wanted to. We’re just at a point with D2 where we have too much “stuff” - exotics sitting in the vault that don’t get used (looking at you, Mask of the Quiet One), countless weapons and armor waiting for the meta to change. Sunsetting made everyone mad. So instead of sunsetting, you can play the game it just won’t get updates after X date. That’s just, like, my opinion, man…
Us not having D3 is down to us the community whining and moaning about going to a new game. What was planned for D3 is Beyond Light and beyond, like you said

I understand that in the moment, the community whined about “losing content,” but really if they would have just given us new games, players can always go back to the older games and play the content. I think we’d be in a much better place of a game. I don’t think Bungie thought about the long term effects of just piling more and more content into D2. Storage space, new player entry, replaying previously paid for content, etc.
My guess is Bungie shifts work towards Marathon. Then once it’s out and patched they pull back and focus on something for Destiny. May see more layoffs though.
I took a long break from destiny 2 and bought the final shape and I am SO overwhelmed about all the new systems and things to do….glad I have my clan to help explain everything…still hate what they did to you….but the final shape campaign was great though
HEAR ME OUT: This is an idea i had the other day hear me out, since destiny was supposed to be a fantasy game at the beginning stay with me now Imagine they announce d3 and its 200 years after the final shape. new engine, new next-gen graphics, f2p with paid DLCS, season are free and don't go away with their story, it looks amazing, new gameplay mechs, new races, new worlds, new solar system. But it turns out that instead of the darkness you are fighting gods, on top of that and this might be the thing that sells d3, is......there are multiverse anomalies in the new solar system maybe caused by the traveler? you could have essentially, literal fantasy worlds, mobs like elfs, trolls, dragons, bosses, on top of that the sci fi worlds we are used to, they could do anything and it would make sense and not feel disconnected. Imagine how cool would it be to be able to use your hoverboard plus being able to mount a big ass tyger, or wolf as mount too, yes, it can be done they would have to make new animations for mounts and all mounts will have the same speed as sparrows, like its infinite possibilities! people would be hype as hell for this. vets and new players alike, this would revive bungie fr, all they need to do is ofc make the game good, day one. it will take time ofc but people would be ok waiting for this if we knew this was on the horizon. Non of this D1 remake stuff, i get it but it doesn't make sense when they could just make this/d3, something new, fresh and exciting. imo if they announce they will be working on d3 and that's why d2 is getting less content for the time being, people would be ok with it and actually excited for destiny again....... instead of this we are getting marathon, an extraction shooter. d3 is a safer bet imo unless marathon pops off and puts the extraction shooting genre on the map like fortnite levels of pop off with Battle royales(wont happen).
The Final Shape was so perfect, I refuse to believe Sony is gonna let Destiny die after spending 4 Billion to acquire Bungie - it makes zero sense but time will tell 🤷♂️

I don't think a D1 remake with save destiny It's a novelty and yes you are right we would play it but we would not stick to it at all. Please don't forget most of destiny 1 is in destiny 2 including the raids this will be like the third time we are experiencing them
I don't think it can... the expansions were what brought the most people back. I've played Destiny ever since d1 launched and the seasons just aren't enough. They would need new yearly content packs to be really expansive still.
What if they release the prequel telling the original story and that could play into a D1 remaster, telling a better story and redoing some missions with new mechanics? Destiny is rich with lore and if told properly, could be a huge hit.
A remake of D1 doesn't make sense because likely the majority of the interest would be either current D2 players or D1 hardcore that stuck around and waited for D1 to get good. Both would be pulling away from the already on life support D2 in it's final announced roadmap. It's also likely many new players would not stick with D1 up to the Taken King content the same way players didn't in the original release. The logical option to make them see the entire D1 content through passed the underwhelming base campaign would be make the remake free to play but that doesn't make financial sense because the eververse isn't big enough in D1 to support that. Maybe if a remake that could have D2's eververse cosmetics and allow the emotes, armor and shaders (overhaul D1's shader system to D2's) to carry over between games? Even then that would be so much money and work to invest into a new engine then make ALL of D1 function in the new engine. That seems like the kind of money dump that would kill a studio entirely. Capcom almost died trying to invest into multiple new engines and only survived because of Sony funding street fighter 5. Square Enix almost died doing the same.. bungie being in the red for so long means a new engine is highly unlikely. If your answer is Unreal 5 we already see how limiting it is with the First Descendant. The truth is Bungie needs Marathon to do well before they can do anything drastic with Destiny because of how they handled the money Destiny made.

D2 is too complicated to bring in new players, OG player like me won’t comeback due to mtx trash, losing paid content. They needs a reset and bring D3.
They need to add everything the removed like red war, forsaken, planets destiny 1 back in to d2 al raids etc. Give everything matchmaking. When everything destiny is in there you have great onboarding and enough to grind for. Then stop suporting it with seasons and work on a d3
