    Kannapan a forest dweller and a devotee of goddess used to hunt and steal from neighbourhood for the living. He had a daughter named Manimangha. He regularly did Bali karmas to please his goddess. Once kannapan stole a calf and brought it home. Manimangha choose the calf her pet and refused to give it for Bali. Obeying her kannapan stopped animal cruelty. Due to his actions he lost his daughter to a disease. Shattered Kannapan lived then with the calf as his only company. One day he dreamt of the calf becoming a stone and a sage standing beside it. He found his dream true the next day. The calf had become stone and was advised as the Devi herself with Lord Vishnu by a sage who had come there. As per his advice Kannapan and his tribe started worshiping the deity. After his death the tribe left the place and the area had become a forest.
    Later when chisel was sharpened on the rudrsksha stone by a lady ,blood started oozing out. The rudrsksha stone was then placed inside chotanikkara for worship.
    When gupthan namboodhiri was chased some time later by an yakshi it is said he reached Devi for help and goddess badrakali killed the yakshi. Vilwamangalam swami did badrakali pradishta on keezhkaavil temple.
