  • This was part of a phenomenal day of music that I was lucky to actually be at, with Pulp, Garbage, Sonic Youth and the Beastie Boys. The venue is a stone-built amphitheatre dating back to the late 1930s, located high above the River Rhine on a rock plateau, with stunning views over the river from the clifftop at the back of the stage. Contrary to my expectations, Pulp were an excellent live band...
    Jarvis Cocker (vocals)
    Candida Doyle (keyboards/backing vocals)
    Mark Webber (guitar)
    Richard Hawley (guitar)
    Nick Banks (drums)
    Steve Mackey (bass)

Given they had to use another band's equipment due to a cockup in logistics, they pulled it off pretty well. That could not have been easy. Love this band, Mark held the brilliant standard of guitar work Russell had achieved and Richard slid right in to fill things out. There's a reason this band has 3 (should be 4) albums in the Britpop top 50.

wtf was this gig bout, were they hungover or what?! not even Candida a feeble smile, weired shit. I guess it's the most sincere live of Pulp that I've ever heard.

This is what pulpwiki says about the gig; "Jarvis opens the set by telling the audience that they are going to "die in pain". This sets the tone for what is to come. Jarvis is clearly in a filthy temper. This had been precipitated by having to play with borrowed instruments because the band's own equipment was flown to Moscow by mistake ("I've never been to Moscow ... but by fucking amplifier has ... My amplifier is more well travelled than I am."). The fact that Jarvis was unable to hear himself through the monitors during the set aggravated things further. At the end, Jarvis shows his displeasure by smashing the microphone stand and tipping over the monitors."
