Been following you since the addiction vid, great content man. The OG card collectors definitely need to get more love ! Any info on the coins behind you btw ?
I agree that the guys that created a channel, with no understanding of the hobby, who try to sell the investment advice (or convince novices to pay up for cards just to drive up the price) aren't good for the hobby. As a UA-cam newbie myself, I hope my content isn't disappointing. Love the Geoff clip, he probably thinks Bob Clemente is Roberto Clemente's brother...
@@returntocollecting I think my newbie use is being misunderstood. I should have used another word. I was talking about the people creating a card channel just to take advantage of the boom and don’t care about the hobby.
Im with you Mr. hobby President🤞!I certainly do not find it boring! I have kearned so much and expanded my knowledge 10fold! I have made so many new friends and contacts! I am most certainly grateful for this community!
I liked and refreshed so many times it errored out my phone web page tab thingy. Opened a new tab and started all over again! I personally think the mass hoard of who is in the hobby look at dollars signs and flashy crap. But are very uneducated. Including the content creators. People like you and me and others within this community who have been on YT, the hobby etc... we just keep doing our thing. I have completely ignored SCD, SCC, Geoff Wilson, etc... Just enjoying true collectors channels. Thanks for sharing.
Your content DOES NOT suck. I am recently coming back into vintage cards after nearly 40 years away. Being a content creator for an unrelated genre, I immediately gravitated toward UA-cam for information and climbing the learning curve. I was quickly turned off by many of those "fancy video" types you mention. The breakers and investor types seem to dominate that type of content creation because it is a money maker for them. Finding the likes of you, Midlife, Sammy Thunder, etc. has really been wonderful. All of you cut through the BS and hype that is so prevalent in the other side of the hobby. You all produce content that is helpful and informative, and very authentic and genuine in your delivery. Maybe they are not as polished as those "fancy videos", but I am doubtful that your audience even cares.
I don't collect cards. I own exctly zero of them. But I enjoying seeing these old cards. They are part of the American experience. It is interesting to see how many different card series were issued over the last 120 years. I collect other things besides cards so I get the collector mentality. Your enthusiasm for the hobby comes across on videos. Yes, add variety to your content but always show what you have been.
John, you’re far from boring. I learn a ton from you, and your show is one of my favorites. Keep doing what you are doing. I appreciate your knowledge, sincerity, and your voice in the hobby.
Agree completely John, we get no UA-cam algorithms love. I’ve done almost 700 videos showing vintage cards and talking history. But we have an awesome community and it’s about making friends!
It’s definitely about making friendships and sharing knowledge. I just fear we are turning over the hobby to bad influencers and turning it into one big get rich quick scheme.
John no one could ever accuse of being boring! There are quite a few highly knowledgeable content creators including yourself who give it to people for free everyday. Thanks
I collected for about six years as a boy; late 50s and early 60s. So that’s really all that I knew. When I got back into the hobby about four years ago, I gravitated to what I knew. But since discovering UA-cam content, I’ve learned so much more about bout pre-war through the late 20th century cards. Thanks to you, John, and other vintage UA-camrs, I’ve appreciated the hobby so much more and have collected vintage cards from throughout the 20th century. Thanks for showing your cards and telling stories of the players we don’t hear anywhere else. I’ll look to step up my game. Cheers.
I did a somewhat similar video not too long ago in which I asked what makes a sports card video go viral...basically, what kind of videos get the most views, as it seems our small little UA-cam space is filled with investment/flip/breaker videos/channels that have the most subscribers and views. Most of the videos done by the "true collectors" as you put it get little attention for the most part. I'm always trying to come up with interesting topics of discussion or ways to show off cards to educate and inform. Because like you said, we've all seen a 1964 Topps Pete Rose card. I'm actually surprised your channel doesn't have twice the number of subscribers and video views that you have. Oh, and I just voted for you for Hobby President (multiple times 😀).
Of course the UA-cam "celebrities" that get the most views are those that cater to the "lowest common denominator". But modern flipping and collecting for profit is losing its luster fast, as prices come back down to earth. Grading is a complete scam, and the absurd premiums being paid for high grade cards cannot be sustained. We much prefer your way of collecting and your content... Definitely NOT boring!
I started my channel after watching several channels for about a year. I really enjoyed how the community interacted with each other. It is nice to see my channel grow, but it truly is not a priority for me. The friendships that I made and the knowledge that I have gained by watching channels like yours is worth it to me. I know I am boring lol, but I love doing it! Great topic my friend!
I think we all do it to meet people, interact and enhance our collecting enjoyment. I just fear we are turning over the hobby to the worst spokespeople.
I watched the sports card investor last night and T-Pott said Caleb Williams will be a bust! I'm more optimistic now about Caleb William ever before!! Go Bears!
John, you have a great card channel , informative, and just a fun time. Your like my twin. Only child, playing games with baseball cards while ya ride in the back seat of the car by your self, you pittsburgh me baltimore, i was going to be a travel agent but i became a bricklayer and i too own my own company. I hope before i die i can make it to a national and hang with you fellers. Dont stop what you do and i will keep watching. Thamk you John. Warren1961.
Drunken votes on live streams count at least twice. You do have some good points about content. The new folks basically came in with their business plans and probably read a lot of books on content creation, seo, etc. So folks like us that just flip on the camera and talk often get left behind. That's why I have upped my game with click bait and thumbnails. Still same old content. 😂😂😂
I would much rather watch your “boring” channel than all the new guys who have no idea what they’re talking about and are just out to make a buck. Long live the “true” collectors! Keep up the good work!
John keep doing what your doing. I enjoy all the little history behind your cards, something I would probably never know if it wasnt for you. You got my vote
To me, trying to make collectors feel like they're welcome participants in the community (which they are), helps the card collecting community and enjoyment of the hobby, as a whole. Your knowledge is off the charts and is super helpful for many of us in the community, including me!!
I think you took that wrong. I was giving you props for coming up with something new and creating your community as something different. I would never criticize you on a video.
One thing I love is the stories you have ! Like the episode you had you showed the Dwight White card that image was taken at Latrobe took me back listening to my dad talk about how he left the hospital to ply in the 74 Super Bowl ! Your content is amazing !
Goof got a Case Bong chase hit and he didn't even know it. At least he knew who Bob Clemente was. Was it planned that the ad before was a ball trimmer. Now that is content. With the 2 chrome domes at the beginning it was a seamless intro.
You aren’t boring. Love your channel just took a while to find it as you said the algorithm doesn’t show your channel. I have been collections for decades but guys like you educate me in areas I have only started to venture towards.
When I started watching Sport card UA-cam videos yes they sent me to those videos, but I got sick of watching them because they were always selling something or opening 1951 Topps packs to get views and I feel they were destroying history just to get views. So here we are and I am down to watching you and one other channel because here I learn something about the cards, players, and hobby. If you want to add something I think a good idea would be to show one player who is currently playing and tell us why you believe we should pay attention to that player, and that's my 2 cents.
John, if you don't become Hobby President, I propose that we take the vintage part of the hobby, and secede from the hobby in general. You can be our Jefferson Davis. LOL
Your definitely onto something but I think it’s more of a societal thing….what interests us “old timers” doesn’t really resonate with the newer generation of collectors. The collectors of today seem to be way less interested in the historical significance of players and cards and much more concerned about investment potential. Everything is about instant gratification now and I’m afraid it’s a trend that is going to be hard to reverse. I personally love your videos because it’s always about the cards, not the values. Anyways, I get where your going and I like that your trying to “save” the hobby from these newer more investment minded collectors. Looking forward to see what you come up with. It’s important to have ambassadors of the hobby like you passing it on to the next generation. Thanks for trying to safeguard the hobby.
My thoughts are, and this is just the perspective of a viewer and commenter, I don't post videos. So, what I would say, from many of the channels I tend to watch often, most of them rarely take much time off from posting content. Eventually if someone enjoys something, you would think maybe they would go on a hiatus, or consider doing spending some of their time on other priorities, or hobbies. For most of the year I watched videos every day, and it just feels draining sometimes. Maybe draining, isn't the right word...but that time could be spent on doing on other things. I think for those, who are considering to start a new channel in 2025...could struggle to find an audience. As UA-cam isn't a new platform, and there's a lot of people that already post videos. Not only would they be competing with some of the bigger hobby channels, but maybe viewers just want to watch Grandma's baking cookies...chocolate chips with milk. Good luck with the hobby presidential vote!
Interesting video, John. I have dabbled in new and vintage. My videos get the standard 50 views, lol. I'm gonna keep trying to showcase what i can. My vintage album seems to draw some interest. Take care!
I think that guy you showed towards the end opening that '67 cello and not knowing what a poster was and acting all strange about it has appeal to fringe collectors... kind of like Dora the Explorer getting all excited while not knowing anything and learning about something like the Grand Canyon for little kids who knew nothing about it. But for adults we already know and would rather see something on National Geographic getting more in depth, similar to advanced collectors wanting to watch in depth videos on vintage cards. Dora may get more views than that travel episode on National Geographic overall, but I know which I'd rather watch.
I think there is a natural limitation on the audience size for authentic card channels. That's not to say there's anything wrong with trying to improve our content, but making the viewer count the primary focus will lead to compromising with what you truly enjoy. I think the benefit in making the videos you care about is that you will have a deeper connection with your viewers, because they are seeing the "real" version of you and they don't need hype or dopamine hits to hook them into sticking around.
I always enjoy the content! I love the initiative expressed here. There aren't many channels with both knowledge and creativity. The ones that do exist get buried in the algorithm or lost in the shuffle, or you just can't remember them for whatever reason. You are correct. "It's a rare poster insert." Oh my, what a goof, lol.
😂 I'm honored to be your intro! I definitely agree overall, but I feel like our channels will never get fully onto the radar without resorting to scummy drama and clickbait, the algorithm seems to love that crap. I hope I'm wrong though.
Hey now, I'm proud of how I've brought Alf back into the forefront of the card hobby........he's been due for some love after the show was cancelled lol
Agree “we” need to make good videos. But more important we need to ‘stay in our lane’. Most content creators are just showing their collections. “Look at these great cards I have”. Most of us aren’t giving collecting advice. But we definitely need a Hobby President to handle such things - to deal with people who pretend to be experts giving advice. Vote For Mangini!
Hi John, I just want to say that if you are boring, then I like boring. I'm 55 now, and I've been collecting since I was about 6 years old. In that time, I've seen "investors" come and go. But the true collectors just ride through the ups and downs in the market. When cards are up, we buy fewer cards. When cards are down, we buy more cards. When cards are down, "investors" are out of cards and on to a new scam. "Investors" are only into cards if they think they can make big money. They don't appreciate the cards. They only see money. So I like boring. Keep on talking about rare cards and old players I've never heard of. I appreciate it.
I totally disagree. We didn't get in this to do that. We are just about being real, and that's enough. Not everybody is going to get that, and that's ok. In my opinion, if someone's on the right path, they'll find us. If they don't dig it, then they weren't ready. You could do what you're suggesting and they still won't stay. Or if they did, it might be for the wrong reasons.
I personally don’t think it’s a new vs old content creator issue. Orlando is a new channel, I’m new. Graig, Chris from Missouri, I can go on and on. I personally don’t like the stereotype of “new channels” are out performing old ones. Mike is the biggest channel in our space and he’s been around a long time. I think we are missing the boat here- Geoff Wilson and others you discussed, show modern cards a majority of time. A lot of us are vintage collectors and focus a majority of our content on that. My question is- why can’t we get more vintage collectors to watch UA-cam? Could our content get better? Sure it could! But I wish we could figure out better ways to get more like minded collectors watching UA-cam.
I only use the new vs old because I’m pointing out it’s the new channels that turned the hobby into the get rich quick scheme and shared knowledge they didn’t have yet lol. Mike and Dr. Beckett have a tiny fraction of subscribers than the “cards are a stock market” crowd. Which only proves my point. Most collectors collect vintage. Even if they collect modern too.
@ New content creator is a wide net, so I just wanted to give my two cents on it. I do know your point on the investments channels, and agree, it’s not what we want young collectors to watch. But I’m pretty firm on the fact that I think, most of us show a majority of vintage and the audience isn’t there. When someone like you or Orlando or Chris, aren’t over 4K subs, it shows the audience isn’t out there. But that’s just my thoughts.
@ 🤣, I’m not sure 1 video will make the views flood in. But I hope your right and there’s more people interested in vintage content then it feels. I’m fine, either way, so many great guys and friends in this space.
I had some clickbait titles back in the day and some ridiculous finds, but those videos got 34 views. Nearly anything I post outside of cards get a lot more views. I have videos with several thousand views not card related. I just showed a collection of dog cards days ago. 2 comments. Jabs opened 1980 Topps box and it was yuck. All those beautiful commons.
I don’t get Jabs at all. He goes to stores and buys packs. Can’t figure out for the life of me why people love to watch that. But hey, good for him. I’m old and out of touch apparently.
Gave a video like. I think card collectors will slowly gravitate away from the pump and dump I want to sell you something influencers to more of the collector channels organically over time. Hopefully we'll see that happen anyways. Thanks for sharing.
Hey, don't knock Geoff. All those guys who took his advice and hoarded Bo Bichette cards landed on a gold mine now that the Dodgers won the World Series.
I agree with a lot of what you're saying, John. But, look at it from a hobby perspective. Modern is more popular than vintage and is a larger portion of the hobby. A lot of the flashy high sub count channels on the sports card space talk about new shiney stuff. Unfortunately, it's just more popular, and more people watch those types of videos. We also don't help each other when a large chunk of our community clicks into a video. Click the like button and click out or watch half of a video or watch a video in fast forward. Those things do not help us get picked up in the algorithm. Just my 2 cents. By the way, not all the newer channels started collecting during covid!😂
I agree, I am a IN PERSON auto collector (Sports & Celebrities) of a "one of a kind" channel. I show things that nobody else does on UA-cam! It might be boring to some (or most) but I do it for my own enjoyment, like a hobby within a hobby. No stress, just a fun way to share my collection with my friends, family & the world. Who knows, one day my channel might get a boost from the All Mighty UA-cam Algorithm LOL You ruined the hobby I love with your Bull$hit Geoff Wilson...Geoff Wilson...
Your campaign slogan should be “make card content great again”. You’re the only person that I ever voted for president. I’ve never voted for a corrupt criminal, I mean politician in my life. To me, they’re all grifters, just like Geoff Wilson.
Omly in America can one make it without a skill. And all the collevtors already have all the good cards so the flipper grifters are stuck flipping psa 10 pop 3600 cards cause thats all they can get.

And this is why you got my vote 😉
Thanks!
😂 I'm honored to be your intro! I definitely agree overall, but I feel like our channels will never get fully onto the radar without resorting to scummy drama and clickbait, the algorithm seems to love that crap. I hope I'm wrong though.
Thanks for shouting me out. I appreciate it.
Hey now, I'm proud of how I've brought Alf back into the forefront of the card hobby........he's been due for some love after the show was cancelled lol
That is creative and fun.
Although the younger people have no idea who Elf is lol
Yeah, man, the way they were forced to end that show on a cliffhanger after not getting renewed was brutal lol
Also, those were the real Tanners, not full house😂
Well said John
You’re definitely not boring. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and humor.
Haha thanks
I second Daves comment we arent boring 😂😂 ,and if we are who cares 😜👊
I was gonna give this a thumbs down but then Jeff came on and made it all great! 😂Hey Alexa, MCCGA! Mangini for SC hobby President!
Haha
I totally disagree. We didn't get in this to do that. We are just about being real, and that's enough. Not everybody is going to get that, and that's ok. In my opinion, if someone's on the right path, they'll find us. If they don't dig it, then they weren't ready. You could do what you're suggesting and they still won't stay. Or if they did, it might be for the wrong reasons.
My videos don't suck, they blow.
Bahaha. Mine suck.
@ that does it. I’m only showing modern from now on and test your theory 😂 let’s do a modern live
@ 🤣, I’m not sure 1 video will make the views flood in. But I hope your right and there’s more people interested in vintage content then it feels. I’m fine, either way, so many great guys and friends in this space.
Hey Theo don’t blame us modern guys!!! 🤣
I've been trying to make content that doesn't suck for five years now (..."trying"). The algorithm doesn't really like me either. 🤪
Haha. All I know is how to make content that sucks.
As we say in Chicago, vote early and vote often.
There is a prominent “influencer” who cannot say Sweet Caporal and Red Schoendienst. Hard to take him seriously.
Rantgini is the best form of Mangini. And you’re never boring!
If Sports Card Shack gets elected as President then I am leaving the hobby.
Haha
Don’t even bother with Jeff Wilson.
I just subbed you. See the algorithms never showed me your stuff.
@@MrJmangini Wow, I appreciate that, thanks so much. P.S. I voted for you! LOL
Thanks!
At least he says "I don't know" like 15x ha
We could do better on our videos!
Haha.
Your campaign slogan should be “make card content great again”. You’re the only person that I ever voted for president. I’ve never voted for a corrupt criminal, I mean politician in my life. To me, they’re all grifters, just like Geoff Wilson.
I have a very low opinion of politicians too.
And thanks!
Omly in America can one make it without a skill. And all the collevtors already have all the good cards so the flipper grifters are stuck flipping psa 10 pop 3600 cards cause thats all they can get.
No.
Haha
