The storyline behind this set is absolutely unbelievable, you couldn’t write it if you tried - Biggest prize pool in smash history - First offline major since a global pandemic - Mang0’s godly losers run to get to this point, beating moky (bare minimum top 20 player) n0ne (same as moky), Plup (top 10 player for years and who knocked him into losers), iBDW (arguably 3rd in the world in the online era), and Hungrybox (former #1 in the world and previous Summit champ) - Zain’s dominance over Mang0 this entire year online and Zain’s dominance period - Mang0 going fox against Zain, who has not lost to a fox since Leffen in 2019, and is historically Zain’s best matchup - Mang0 winning twice on Final Destination to reset, a stage that was pretty much considered an automatic win for Zain against spacies - The Marth-Fox matchup being pretty much a topic of discussion for all of Melee’s history up to this point, with many many players agreeing that the matchup is heavily in Marth’s favor - Mang0 never winning a summit and historically having his worst tournament performances at previous summit iterations If this doesn’t make you want to play melee then I don’t think anything will
All of it was because it was the first tournament in person in a long time. Unfortunately, this type of tournament is most likely a once in a lifetime occurrence. All the nerves and pressure of the LAN setting make even these top players crack. I think everyone played worse than usual and it made guessing who would win nearly impossible.
So true I've seen people saying it's not the greatest set of all time just because zain played bad. Not ever taking into account how intimidating a fox playing insanely aggressive after losing 2 matches against a marth on fd is.
Very true. Zain was playing out of his mind this tournament. Mang0 was playing very sloppy up until he started his losers run. Then he got on fire and steam rolled through everyone. Once he faced Zain, Zain kept cracking under Mang0’s insane pressure with his Fox. If you notice that every time Mang0 let up, Zain would take it and run a mile with it. His punish game was so dangerous but at the very end he cracked under the pressure and dropped the combo that could’ve won him the tournament.

Between HBOX coming back, the mango losers run, zain looking unbeatable, and the mango zain finals it is the best tourney in my mind, storyline and gameplay, and the clutch in this set and the winner pulling the out the W was the icing on the cake. I just really enjoyed the whole thing. Thanks you to each person who donated to make this tourney prize pool crazy, and all the production crew who made it happen. Thanks for a amazing weekend.

I don’t think it’s possible to truly play good in a tourney.. you’re always gonna play “bad” compared to what you know you’re capable of, so it’s a matter of who is less affected by the tourney pressure. damn near every legendary set has so many flaws due to the pressure of wanting to win. Apex 2015 for example is known as one of the most legendary tourneys but if we watch it now, we realize how sloppy the play really was, and the fact that Armadas fox was still so new, yet he made it to grands and almost won.. then there’s evo 2016 where hbox got his signature rest cuz armada did the worse air dodge ever, etc.
@@joey5745 Zain definitely played worse this match compared to how he usually plays. IDK if he was able to hear the crowd but man, everyone was basically cheering against him.

Watching this live, I can't believe I broke the first rule in the book of Melee: Don't Sleep on The Kid. Mango finally taking a Summit after 5+ years of trying, in one of the greatest runs ever. Thank you to both of these players, and everyone else at Summit, for continuing to reinvent this game and deliver moments like these - 20 years and counting!
The plot armor is real - went in a doubter after the first match with plup, and came out a believer after watching the entire loser's bracket run - and here I am a month later rewatching the finals
I can’t put my finger on what exactly makes me root for Mang0 - best guess is he’s a ‘people’s champ’ meaning you take away his world class Melee skill and he’s just a regular dude. Whereas you take away a guy like Zain’s world class Melee skill and he’s still good at other stuff and has other things going for him. Everybody wants to watch a regular person be incredibly sick at one thing in the world, and put all his effort into that.
@@zogbogbean2464 maybe that’s why you root for him dude, but not me. I don’t cheer for people because they have ‘alpha energy’. If that was the case for me I’d root for Hbox. Dude is always trying to intimidate his opponents with his intensity.
There are a few sets in Melee's History that sit in a tier of their own as some of the greatest ever played. This set easily joins that tier. That was freakin' amazing.
This redeems all the bullshit this scene has gone through. Thankful to Fizzi forever... The online era should never die and should supplement the growth of the LAN tourneys yet to come. GG and the slippi kids are coming :) just give us some time.
My first set ever was ken vs isai 15 years ago. I fell in love instantly with competitive melee. No other e-sports has come close to bringing the intensity that this sets have brought us. I just can't believe the way that this game has and is still evolving. Amazing set, congrats to Mango.
Even tho I watched it live I had to come and watch it again. One of the greatest sets ever played. Melee is sick Edit: I’ve now watched this every single day since the tournament
I know we haven't played Melee offline for a while but the recency bias is super strong here imo... Leffen/Mango at Genesis, Armada/PPMD at Apex, Armada/Hungrybox at Evo... Idk if I can put this ahead of those.
I'm 5 minutes in and cannot believe how fast and technical they're both playing. If you showed this to a player even three years ago it would completely blow their mind, let alone any time before that. Players are becoming so skilled. This was the best tournament I've ever seen.
When this was over my immediate reaction was that this is the greatest set(s) of all time. I've since rewatched it three more times, and I stand by that statemet. You couldn't ask for a better story. Mang0 going Fox against Zain's Marth just the prove the naysayers wrong. Reverse 3-0ing Zain while winning back to back on FD (a task that the experts pretty much said was all but impossible) Then of course the second set that went to game 5 last stock each 0% and Mang0 taking it in the end. Add to all that and you have the return to LAN and the biggest prize pool in Smash history. An all time classic.
This has taught me more then ever that if your still alive even with 1 stock you can still win he didn't give up and thats what got him the W. He made Zain feel pressure like never before and God that was some amazing set
greatest melee i have ever watched in my life. this friendly rivalry, and the amount of COMFORT to just fucking COMPETE AGAINST EACH OTHER and make something sublime, TOGETHER AS A TWO PERSON EFFORT, is something i have never seen before in competitive gaming in my life. i cried after watching this set live. . . Mang0 had the eye of the tiger here you could tell he wanted this so bad! Also everyone played so well at this tournament. The Amsa sets were amazing, plup was killing it. Melee is moving into a new dimension and the players are getting sooo damn good.
I've been an avid watcher of this game for 9 years now and this was absolutely the craziest set ever. What an incredible tournament and an even more amazing ending
I wonder if this set can be cited someday in some overall “greatest tournament sets of all time” list or whatever melee needs to be seen so much more after thissss
This is Zains first loss to a Fox since June 2nd 2019, his first loss to a Fox on FD since March 25th 2018, and his first loss to a solo fox not named Leffen since March 10th 2018 when he lost to Crush.
Well I've come back to watch this set again, probably the 10th time - greatest Grand Finals in Melee history if you ask me. When I hear Toph scream "We got a second set!" and HMW yell "We got a reset!" I still get goosebumps.
the story lines, the return of offline melee, the losers run, game 10 bracket reset, largest prize pool EVER?!, and the highest level melee ever witnessed? oh my god its just,,,it will be very hard to top this, so incredible
They're actually pretty mirrored. This Summit was the highest prize pool. That EVO was the highest player count. Both eventual winners were sent to Losers by Plup who was playing insane. They both went on an insane Losers run (beating each other in the process) including running it back against Plup only to finally go against the Top player of the time. Both were in nightmare scenarios in the first set, being 2 FD games or down in stocks game 5 and being grabbed at kill percent on their last stock. Clutching it to Game 10 and winning. The only appropriate thing is to have the Spiderman meme pointing at each other. Melee is scripted bro. 😏
MOST INSANE SET I'VE EVER WATCHED! Literal tears came out of my eyes from how much of a roller-coaster ride this was. Thank you Mang0 and Zain for playing melee :3
Mango pulled off a heist on that last stock. Back against the wall the entire time and he just refused to die. Might have been one of the most ungodly runs I've ever seen.
I think it’s cause melee is so hard, that to be a top player you have to be all in. Your life has to be melee. So when you have so many people dedicating their life to something in search of the truth, then you can only get great results. In melee the truth is found after each set. Who had more skill but more importantly will.
Melee really is the hypest fighting game of all time. This game is twenty years old and has no signs of slowing down. This is definitely now in my personal top ten favorite sets that was pure insanity.

Don’t forget how insane Plup looked until facing Zain. He dropped something like 3 total games (not sets, just games) making his way through pools, through the gauntlet, and through the final bracket until winners semis against Zain.
The defeat by Zain seemed to mess him up, but before that he was playing out of his mind.

@@ostensiblyquerulous yea I honestly had a feeling plug was going to win the tourney going into Sunday, but zain and mango stole the show haha, what a insane tourney
zach smith Plup is entirely momentum based, the longer the tournament goes on the worse he does, just how he is. And against Mang0 and Zain, neither are gonna get steamrolled or flustered because they already play against the fasted players. Except aMSa, he flustered both of them.

Mango turns to Zain: “We both played bad“
“But this time, you played badder”
It was all of that pressure, a pressure so BIG it turns Gods into entry level 0-2ers, we all would cave under such a large amount of money,
I don’t think it’s possible to truly play good in a tourney.. you’re always gonna play “bad” compared to what you know you’re capable of, so it’s a matter of who is less affected by the tourney pressure. damn near every legendary set has so many flaws due to the pressure of wanting to win.

I fully expect a hundred comentary/analysis videos on this set, and I'll watch them all.

I think it’s cause melee is so hard, that to be a top player you have to be all in. Your life has to be melee.
