Extended length season finale! - The Carmudgeon Show - Ep. 37

- It’s time we put you in charge of the subject matter - and we received hundreds of great questions. Many were remarkably intelligent, some were genuinely difficult to answer, and a few cracked us up. Either way, thanks to our awesome audience!
This is the last episode for the first season of The Carmudgeon Show - and it’s the longest episode yet. Jason and Derek set their timer for 90 minutes and answered all of the audience questions they could - and only got halfway through their list.
One question was perhaps the most difficult to ask: Derek asks Jason to admit a secret he’s been harboring: what happens after summer break? You’ll have to listen to find out.
The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Proving you don’t have to be old to be grumpy, they spend each episode talking about what’s wrong with various parts of the automotive universe. Despite their best efforts to keep it negative, they usually wind up laughing, happy, and extolling their love for cars. Which just makes them angrier and more bitter.

Jason Cammisa is an automotive journalist, social-media figure, and TV host with over 250 million views on UA-cam alone. Jason’s deeply technical understanding, made possible by a lifelong obsession with cars, allows him to fully digest what’s going on within an automobile - and then put it into simple terms for others to understand. Also, a Master’s Degree in Law trained him to be impossible to argue with.
Derek Tam-Scott still tries. He’s a young automotive expert with old-man taste in cars, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering - which means he knows how to be civil to Jason. Or at least he tries. With a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced the world’s most iconic cars. And hated most of them.

Damnit Jason, everytime I find your content you freakin leave. You and hyphen work well together.
So much better than the manufactured top gear style relationship dynamic motortrend pushed
It’s almost like he’s running from the law. 🤷🏻♂️
Supradrew™ Jason Camissa does NOT “run” from the law. He gets escorted by them.
@@Fee.1 He's being put on different car shows through the help of the witness protection program for being around one too many reckless driving incidents?
@@Fee.1 it was good
Jason please keep doing a podcast with hyphen, y’all are the by far the best automotive content on UA-cam for those of us who love shitty old cars and useless information about them. So much of the content on UA-cam is about new cars that I have zero interest in.
I totally agree
Thanks, all! Don't worry, I'm not going far. Stay tuned!
except when they bring up politics...(ugh...threw up in my mouth)
Everyone’s got a hot take. It’s the world we live in...
@@JasonCammisa Will you be on hagerty youtube channel?
Looking forward to the new content Jason, bummed you'll be leaving ISSIMI as I've really enjoyed the content that you and Derek have put out. This show was one of my favorite things and I was always looking forward to it every week, so sad to see it potentially go.
I feel the same
This was 100% my favorite car podcast being produced. Here is to hoping it sticks around in one form or another.
Same
He's on instagram @jasoncamissa. He posts verdicts you'll have a ton of fun reading and just other wonderful content.
@@rahulmandala4930 I wish I could see the verdict. I don't have insta. Is there another way?
"Jason; Why can't you hold down a job?"-Jason's mom.
Because he is a genius and everyone wants him to work for them.
NOOOO MOM AND DAD PLEASE STAY TOGETHER FOR ME. THE OLD MEN AT HAGERTY DONT HAVE TAMHYPHENS SHIRTLESS APPEAL. TRY TO REMEMBER THE DAY I WAS BORN IN THE HOSPITAL AND HOW BEAUTIFUL IT WAS.
This comment should have many many more likes than it does
A Balakrishnan same for the other one that I wrote that says
No carmudgeon is dead or it stays as is I don’t want mom sleeping around with other skypers while dad helps settle estate sales disputes for Hagerty
@@Fee.1 HEY YOU GOT YOUR WISH
Its gonna be hard to find another goofball to play off Derek’s straight man persona. You guys have great chemistry. We’re probably losing Carmudgeon but congrats to Jason. Been following you guys since the first discussion. Thanks for the honest, informative content!
Agree. I know Jason is excited about the new gig, but this is great chemistry.
I sure hope that the carmudgen show would continue with you two, you have the same chemistry as the old top gear trio and thats why you were part of my daily routine
Congratulations on the new job Jason. Hopefully the Hagerty videos will be a little less boring. Lol. I hope you seriously consider continuing the Carmudgen podcast with hyphen. It’s one of the few podcasts I actually look forward to. 🤷🏻♂️
Please consider keeping the podcasts whit derek going. One of the few podcasts i look forward to every week. You have great chemistry, i would compare it to the old topgear. Salutations from italy.
Jesus Jason, keep it together. Starting to feel like my relationship with my dad.
Jason is about as reliable as his VW.
On a serious note, I hope that Jason stays as one of the hosts of the podcast. Like other pointed out, the thing that made this show work was the dynamic relationship (not sure if that's the right expression, but I hope you get the point) between him and Derek. Perhaps there's a way where Jason could host the podcast, but advertise Hagerty's services? In either way, I am looking forward to seeing new content from ISSIMI and Jason.
When Jason left motor trend I stopped caring about their content.
Retweet
Same
As if they made it easy to care about their content when they removed all of it, and we cant find it now.
Head to head was never the same again
Also jethro can kick rocks
I hope you can find the time to continue these podcasts with Derek on a regular basis. You could do some on location or just continue from home as is. This podcast literally started gaining traction, so to just end it would be silly I think.
Damn...how can you leave Derek?! You were such a cute couple
I really hope you guys find some way to keep this going
Jason why do you keep leaving us :/
DO NOT END THE CARMUDGEON SHOWW
talk to larry for that
Jason, you have the Midas touch when it comes to car content. Happy for you taking the job with Hagerty, but please keep the carmudgeon podcast with hyphen going! Your chemistry is top gear trio levels and I’ve broadened my perspective so much listening to your podcasts
Noooo! Please don't break up the Carmudgen show! You guys have such perfect chemistry! This is my favorite podcast. Fingers crossed that Hagerty will be cool.
(Congrats on the new gig Jason)
aaaaand there goes issimi. there goes the channel. that's it. pack it up. it was a good run.
As much as I´m sad Jason is leaving as I have just found this channel, I like hyphens way of speaking and analysing, and he and the Issimi team seems to have a lot of cool shit, so should be plenty of content you can do!
This is the only thing I look forward to, I genuinely don’t know what I’m going to do
same here :(
I'm excited that my question may have been answered, but Jason and DTS are the current car podcast kings! This podcast KILLS all the other shows out there, for the experience and realness you guys bring. Would be super sad to see Jason go.
Congrats on the job! But please please PLEASE keep the podcast with you two. Make it a joint venture between issimi and hagerty or I don’t know what but keep at it. Seriously I’ve just found it like two weeks ago and i’ve allready binged it all. There’s no equivalent anywhere else, between your chemistry and the level of information and nerdiness. You two are doing the content I was looking for all my life of motoring enthusiast ! Other than that I ´ll look forward to whatever content you’ll be making at hagerty, and I hope we’ll see more of you Derek at Issimi even if that’s not your primary job!
Nooo!! I’ve always looked forward to this show. Damn you, Jason! Good luck with your new gig, I’ll be following along... But does this mean we get to see Derek do spotlight features?!
Jason, congrats and look forward to the new content. Hope you guys can figure out a way to keep this going though. Looked forward to it every week.
If there is any way to keep this show going, please explore it! You two have great chemistry on screen and it would be a shame if company politics ruin this golden gem. ❤️
Hi Jason, I hope you will have a similar presence with podcasting or YT like right now - I really would miss it, great Show.
That's writing from Germany :)
Honest question. As an American I've always wondered what the german car community think our cars are like?
@@johnbacon4997 It depends on the experience we have overseas or not. There is a small community which are into US cars, mostly Mustang few Corvettes. Of course Teslas in the last years. We think the built quality is not good - compared to our or Japanese cars. Historically US cars didn't corner well, that got much better. Also the packing is not comparable - like the car is larger from the inside then the outside (you guess), midsize or full-size cars don't work well in europe, streets and especially parking are smaller. That limits the success of US produced cars over here to very few. Does that help?
@@bavariancarenthusiast2722 yes thanks. I absolutely love Germany. When I was 18 i took a trip to Frankfurt, cologne and Stuttgart. Wonderful country. Also do german cars have any mystique or wonder over ther? I remember being shocked seeing a MB wagon police car
it's sad
so sad...
it's a ....
sad...
sad...
situation.
Underrated comment
spot on
And it's getting more and more absurd
It's sad, so sad (so sad)
This song should have been the intro song for this podcast
Please never stop making Carmudgeon! This is the best automotive podcast on yt and every episode was never to long. You two match perfectly.
Please figure out a way to continue this podcast with you two! I don't know if you guys realise just how special and different the show is to all other online car content, and it's finally just starting to see some growth! Easily the favourite car show amongst my friend group. If it is to continue with a dual partnership between Issimi and Hagerty or even spun off seperately, you would see huge support from the community. I believe many people would offer to help fund it too (if that's required). Make it happen! All the best guys
Holy shit. Didn't expect this. But hope we could all getting better. A new podcast with hyphen would be cool though. Definitely gonna miss it!! Cheers for you both. And thanks for everything!
I 100% agree with you Jason about the Carrera GT sound, I watched tons of videos and even heard a few CGT’s over the years and the outside sound is amazing, but then finally got the opportunity to ride as a passenger in one about 5 years ago and was disappointed that about 75% of the sound it makes from the outside is replaced by gear whine and some other mechanical noises (not complaining about mechanical noise at all, but it’s signature high pitched wail that you hear from the side of the road is, for the most part, non existent from the cabin)
[ Nooooooooooooos in Darth Vader ]
Also, congrats, sounds like more cool content on the way.
Jason's trail of broken-hearted co-hosts lengthens.
I'm sure someone already wrote this, please find a way to still do this podcast even if it's not weekly, it has been one of the coolest things in the last few crappy months
Someone please compensate or have hyphen and Cammisa continue to work with each other! Even if carmudgeon ends, I hope there will be another podcasttttttttt
So now Hagerty will have Jason, Sam Smith, together with the rest of their already outstanding staff. They really are taking over, but I'm not complaining.
I'll definitely be sad if we lost the Carmudgen Show, though.
Congrats Jason. Please figure out a way to keep the carmudgeon show with Derek Hyphen going. Every episode has been great and you two work so well together.
Really appreciate you answering my question, also, although it will be sad to see the Carmudgeon show, a great show for a car guy like me with very few car guy friends.
Show go*
I really need this to keep going in the future as the best podcast out there
Jason this better fucking not be the last episode, this is my absolute favourite car podcast and it took me ages to find one I actually like. DON'T ABANDON THE SHOW PLEASE!!
You left motortrend and I stopped watching it, after found you again and was so grateful to watch and enjoy. And you leaving again now. Writing from Baku, Azerbaijan
Glad to see sandler and hyphen still working together
I never used to even listen to podcasts until I happened to see a Smoking Tire podcast with Jason on it and I was like "Hey! That's the Motor Trend guy! Wonder what he's up to now" and I found Carmudgeon which was like, 7 or 8 episodes in. I binged them ALL in one night. I never even listened to podcasts before this show, and I'll truly miss having this be a regular part of my wednesdays. It was a good run dudes, I'll miss ya. The dynamic with Hyphen and Cammisa IS what makes this the great thing it is.
So who am I emailing at Hagerty? get me Larry's contact ASAP I'm starting a petition
19:20 I was at a large turnout somewhere deep in the Angeles Forest a year or two back, and a blue Lexus LFA HOWLED by and the echoes of its exhaust even after it disappeared around the next bend basically gave me whatever the sound version of a hard-on is.
We need a full Carmudgeon episode on why there is no decent Thai delivery in that dudes neighborhood
Damn it😂 I live Jason so much, and he is changes where he works faster than McLaren P1 changes gear
Well, this is weird. On the one hand big congratulations to Jason on the other... NOOOO :D This whole thing is so much fun. I truly mean it, you guys make an amazing car show/podcast mainly because of your knowledge, passion and both personalities (and that part is rather difficult if not impossible to replace). Anyway cannot wait for the new stuff from both of you and hopefully, fingers crossed, this comes back in some other form (yes a man can dream).
90 min? yes!! Tap screen...1:47:44 ..... 107 min hell yes!!!!! Going to be best 107 minutes this week!
::edit:: Why Jason why? Don’t leave us!!
this is nearly the best thing on the internet. you will be missed Jason, assuming you aren't allowed to come back. Congrats and thanks for making wednesdays meaningful for a while.
That's a really professional headshot as your profile picture eric.
JASON WWWWHWHHWHWHHYYYYYYYYYY???????
Jason noooooo :( please keep doing this podcast with hyphen is some form or another! I seriously had high hopes for hundreds of episodes; best automotive podcast running. I listen almost every morning on my blast to work in my FR-S and it's going to be very sadly missed. Best of luck at Hagerty, but you truly are the Carmudgeon. There is no Carmudgeon show without Jason Cammisa
As a MINI R53 owner, your comments are spot on. Throttle lag, rorty and with high maintenance costs.
But costs be damned, it's my sweet addiction.
Another vote to keep the Carmudgeon show going!
Jason, keep doing podcasts!
I'm late to the party. I hope you guys can continue to do this because this is one of the best car content channels. Derek if you can continue the the channel I'll keep watching. Good luck Jason
Congrats Jason'! I just hope Derek is still gonna do Videos :)
also Steve Mattin did the W220 :)
@@sauwercraud That's the thing, they both did. Bruno Sacco did it first, laid the foundation and finished off by Steve Mattin
NO NO NO GOD NO...... NO!! (Michael Scots voice) dammit y’alls knowledge and chemistry is perfect! Im sure you’ll make cool stuff but this is amazing!
AWHHHHHH CMON!!!
Ask Hagerty to be a prime sponsor of the "Carmudgeon Show". Think of it: 'The Carmudgeon Show - sponsored by Hagery'
Hagerty and ISSIMI need to co-sponsor the continuation of Carmudgeons, Spotlight, Icons. The content and production quality is orders of magnitude better than other shows irrespective of budget. The difference is like watching Jason & Derek prep then drive a 917 in FULL anger around the Nordschleife in 4K surround sound with multiple camera angles and commentary vs. a cassette recording of an AM radio broadcast of a 4 year old making car noises.
Thank god they're back doing Carmudgeon again!
Please keep this going guys. The combination of the two of you works so well, absolutely love this podcast (although I pretty much always watch the UA-cam version)
Very sorry to see this end - you both are a great combination!
such a sad day! carmudgeon has been awesome! please do try to continue this on a new channel if need be!
Jason leaving the show is possibly the best thing that could happen to it. I mean, how long could this go on before it eventually went off the boil? No growing old, bloated and saggy, no jumping the shark, just a single, shining series which had the automotive cognoscenti screaming in agreement and splitting their sides with laughter before cars were banned along with all other outdoor activities and we got to listen to re-runs and talk about how good it used to be. You couldn't get more carmudgeonly than that, could you?
Congrats on the new gig, but it will be sad to see you leave this channel. What you've built here with Hyphen is something special and we all enjoy the chemistry you have together.
The trouble with being a car enthusiast/journalist is the potential to become a bit jaded after having driven so many cars that most people will never be able to enjoy and/or buy. Also, I have read so many reviews of journalist praising some cars when they first come out, only to spurn them a few years later. The (modern) Camaro is a classic example. When Chevy decided to bring it back and showed the concept to the public, it was lauded as being a brilliant design that they hoped with maintain the lines and proportions of the car on display... and Chevy did! It was barely changed and that was a gutsy move. No more than six months after it was on the streets, it was ridiculed for having a 'cartoonish' design (mostly because it was so hard to see out of), but those slit-like windows looked great! My point here is... it's important to remember that getting too close to a subject is one of the easiest ways to lose focus. I think you guys are really smart and knowledgable about what you know, but most of us can only dream about a lot of the cars you drive all the time. For regular folk like me, owning ANY 911 (manual or not) would be a treat and a privilege that would make up stupid giddy.
Carmudgeon is the best show on YT. Hagerty, please keep Jason and Tam hyphen Scott doing this content..........!
Don't give up Derek.
Jason was not even into bikes.
Watching this again. Glad that carmudgon keeps going!
Damn, Jason. Kicked my GTB in the teeth again on the way out to the door. Good luck with you tomorrow new job!
Such a shame, would’ve been interesting to see a discussion about the $250K E30 M3
Jason, you're being a real gabba gool leaving us like this.....Long live DT-S!
Wow, I’m glad my questions made you laugh, that was the goal! Good luck, Jason. Derek, keep the show going please!
Only podcast I ever consistently watched, well done guys. Farewell.
Research the flat earth btw, space does not exist!
Congrats but at the same wtf Jason, I loved this show. I just forwarded your channel to a few friends yesterday, now I look like a clown. Whatever still some of the best automotive content on the net, your conversation yesterday about 0-60 times was really important. 0-60 times do not define an automobile.
I really loved this podcast it's a shame there won't be any more of this. But considering how relatively cheap a podcast can be, I think Jason should have an independent podcast for himself so we will always have something like this podcast no matter where he works.
bruh this is the only podcast I can watch whole episodes of I love the duo if Jason doesn't come back that's a beat one right there
My dad had an Escort XR3i as a runaround car. I only drove it a couple of times, but on one occasion drove it so hard I blew the dipstick out. It was an iconic 80s, fabulous, basic, analogue, go-cart of a car.
This is sad. Carmudgeon quickly became my favorite podcast and the one I look forward to listening to the most. Why do good things have to end so quickly?
Congrats on taking possession of the Alfa, Jason!! Hope you have fun with her! Make sure to keep the relation between your other cars as stable as you can lol. You and Derek are hands down, the best duo.
Sincerely, Thank You Both. I genuinely look forward to seeing how your future endeavors play out.
PS lets find a late 80s chevy cavalier and take it to the gambler 500!
I find the keeping of a fire extinguisher next to what looks like vodka and gin bottles humorous.
we'll genuinely start a revolt if this podcast doesn't come back in some shape or form, please continue this fucking podcast for the love of god
Thank you for solving the mystery of ‘can the speed signs display a third digit’ for me! I was stationed in Germany for four years, and always wondered what would happen if you went faster than 99kph. But never did for fear of the blitzers
Best podcast I've had the pleasure of listening to all year.
I miss you guys sooo much. Please come back ;(
They have so many podcasts
Jason, don't stop doing podcasts with Derek! I'm sure you guys will find a way to do more Carmudgeon. Maybe not at the same frequency, but still do some periodic Carmudgeon with Derek. Someone said that before - and I second that - you two had some chemistry, which I only saw in the golden Top Gear days. It would be a shame to not do this anymore!
"If it's made by a guy in a shed," Derek unwittingly just described the entire remaining UK-owned car industry...
I'd be super bummed if the Carmudgeon Show went away! Also, Spotlight is fire content. Damn...
Thanks, guys. So many people that have driven one love the Fiesta ST. I love mine.
I've had a SVT focus from 2002, and miss it greatly. The FiestaST reminds me of it.
I stopped watching Motor Trend when Jason left too. I spent time waiting and searching for the next career move - but not in a stalker kind of way ......... much. Thrilled when the Carmudgeon Show appeared - so, congrats on the new job, but damn ...... I am so going to miss ISSIMI, hope you can find time for the occasional visit. sigh........ I'm off to the garage to find consolation with my air-cooled 911, pffth.
Been watching / listening to you guys since you had a few thousand subs. It’s been an informative, interesting, accurate, historical, hilarious and always hugely entertaining show. Well done for breaking the stale UA-cam mold and creating genuinely original content. The answer appears to be that Jason’s new emplooyer sponsors the show, in a similar way to the sponsor of “Harry’s Garage” - please look into this. All the very best and thanks for all the fish.
1:05 Aww thanks
Looking at the comments, you have a profound effect/influence on a lot of people. It's a bit selfish to feel sad, but you're the best in the business, Jason. Congrats, and keep making content, Hyphen. You've really come into your own.
Beating on a diesel doesn't cure the EGR cooler/intake gumming up issues, it just delays them. This is because the EGR valve closes under high loads so a diesel vehicle will go longer without this problem when driven out of the city more but gumming up is still ultimately inevitable.
There is a low a d high pressure EGR.
Please drive a diesel fast.
I wish every success in Jason's new job but damn I will miss this series. Hope you will do some special episodes in the future. Best of luck to both of you.
Can't wait to see what ISSIMI comes out with in the future and of course what Jason does at Hagerty!
Please Turn The Carmudgeon Show into its own youtube channel and keep making these great podcasts!
By God, Jason don't You dare leave this show!!! This is honestly the best automotive themed podcast and it is mostly due to the fact that You two know eachother so well and it is a lot of fun to hear You interact. I am genuinely sad. Think about that, You guys created something so great that it reached me all the way in the shithole country of Poland. Don't take this away from me please
Please just keep doing the podcast. If You want I can pay, like 2 bucks, thats all I have but i'll give it to You if that's what it takes
