@SNKTHX2000 I believe this is the Son of Ovo version. Peter actually talked about it being replaced by heroes. Saying this version, together with the rest of his OVO version would be released in the years to come.
I've really never had the patience to listen to the Ovo version more than a handful of times. This is sooooo good and succinct. With a bit of reverb this would've been a great addition to . . . any album, really.
@runway34r - I've always been up until about 2004 when I, ha ha ha ha.... somehow got the impression that he had died. :D I didn't realize that he hadn't until I, only a few moments ago, discovered that he was the House scene artist. Ha ha... glad to know that he's still with us and jammin'. I love his alternative approach to these covers; orchestrated music like his version of "My Body is a Cage" and "Fade Out" are amazing. Now that he's come back to life, time for me to play catch up.
Finally - a version sung by the author instead of relying on lesser singers (= any singer who is not Peter Gabriel) - like OvO should have been from the start.
Aaaah I see. That sounds awesome! for instance, i enjoyed a lot this song with Gabriel's voice. The only thing i have to complain about, is that the instrumental section was a very beatiful and moving piece of art, and it got lost in this version.
As great as PG is as a vocalist to discount the greatness of Paul Buchanan's voice is to miss out on some of the finest music ever made (see the Blue Nile)

Yes. I tried so hard to like Ovo. This song is so good that I always wished it was his vocals, this is so much better.
Sorry, but i really love Buchanan/Fraser version of "Downside up". Although, i like the Gabriel/Gabriel live version too ^^
