I found you can salvage the negative plates from dead lead acid batteries and rebuild them into a new battery. if the negative plates are in decent condition they can be reused and achieve roughly 1/2 the batteries original capacity! Simply use either 1/2 or 1/3 the negative plates as positives. and the lead dioxide layer will begin forming! Keep it going afterwards. You want it kept on a trickle charge. float charge for maybe several weeks. and charged often. the self discharge rate will decrease with use and more float charging. until its able to hold a charge on its own! You can use two dead batteries to potentially make 1 fully working almost like new battery if the negative plates are in good shape! Usually the positive electrodes have disintegrated into useless mushy junk. and can probably be discarded. You might be able to very poorly make a paste out of positive electrode material and slowly convert it into metallic form lead by reverse electrolysis on the red lead. using a diluted sulfuric acid OR substituin baking soda. Baking soda is very slow but can work. Magnesium sulfate is faster. but your sacrificial anode may disintegrate and need to be replaced several times. You don't even need any special binder. Just press it tightly into some kind of lead grid. under pressure. with a VERY VERY THICK and dense separator between the electrodes. it'll form conductive pathways through the particles compressed against each other and slowly convert the lead into spongy metallic lead. Thats why you need a very thick separator. and decent spacing between the electrodes. but it works!
The red lead makes dragon eggs fireworks, the small crackling stars that burn brightly when mixed with aluminum powder. To reuse for a battery grind it all, including the plate frames. Mix some fiberglass powder in it and make clay like. Cast a plate and put the paste in scraping flat. Wrap in fiberglass paper, Allow to air dry, then bake at about 400 to 450 degreesF for a few hours.
CUIDADO NO RESPIRAR NINGUN POLVO O HUMO. NO TIRAR RESIDUOS AL MEDIO AMBIENTE.. NOS VEMOS . SALUDOS..
Thanks for the break apart. The composition of the paste differs from company to company as also composition/configuration of the Grid & exact alloy(Calcium lead Antimony nowadays). All these criteria do have a bearing on the lifecycle, endurance.
Basically. Crush negative and positive plates, separately. Melt the lead. The antimonium grid will float and be taken apart. Then cool the melted lead in grains. Put the grains in a rotative barell with steel balls inside to make a lead powder. Melt the grid antimonium in a higher temperature and pour in grid molds. Then press the lead powder in the grids using maybe 1ton of pressure in a hidraulic press. And you'll have new plates. Put fiber glass separator between the plates and you'll have a new battery. And watch Pakistani battery truck to learn how to reassemble the batteries.
Thanks for sharing. You have definitely touched on a subject that is very close to my heart since storage is the most expensive part of solar energy collection. Anyone who learns to make their own deep cycle batteries from discarded car batteries is home free and off the grid overnight. As Li-ion batteries become more popular (I don't know why since they don't last any longer than Pb-acid) - except for the weight factor in vehicles) the price of lead will crash and nobody will want to be in the battery recycling (for lead only) business. UA-cam is full of videos on how to pull things apart but videos on repurposing and recycling are few and far between. Let's all keep up the good work. We are heading in the right direction. Looking forward to the next exciting instalment.
So Robert Murray Smith has do.e videos on repurposing . His lead acid fabrication and repair videos are two years ago .He s a chemist who was doing mainly supercapacitor videos for several years. The zinc bromine attery lools like the winner for home build.
Basically read lead (PbO2) is just simple material, but it fragile & need to reshape into solid plate, that's why it need to mixed with some clay & baked in the oven with antimony grid as conductor...
Thanks for the good video. I was wondering, .......... what happens if you crush the positive plates just as they are, to a fine powder (the left over lead and the PbO2) and then make that into the paste? I have done that and it seems to work ok. I got a short cct current of 4.68 amps after charging. The short cct current was sustained for at least ten minutes at which time it went just below 1 amp. The test cell I made was very tiny, only 1 inch wide x three inches high surface area. The forming of the new rejigged positive plate, improved vastly after three or four charge discharge cycles. Thanks Edward P.S. May I caution you that those gloves are next to useless as a guard against the toxic lead dust. You really need to use fully black rubber gloves that are fully sealed.
+eeezygoing Yes very much agree with the cloves. They were only for making the video and thrown out afterwards. Yes useless for sure. Neat about you little plates you made. I never figured out yet how to make a big lead grid for the paste to be pressed into. I,m thinking of using some hard wood. Its something I,m still playing around with. Your welcome also Edward. Tks for sharing your little playing around also. If you go bigger let me know please how it worked out. Take care
+Thinking out side box , ..... Yep I sure will let you know. It was watching your video that inspired me to try in the first place, so I am very indebted to you. You need / deserve the thanks more than me :-). By the way, ..... it is very important to use non-contaminated water for the electrolyte. Distilled water is good, but de-ionised water is better as there are no electrical ions inside that could discharge your plates and make the battery just junk. A cheep source I found is pure and chemical - free and bacteria free drinking water. You should be able to find it in the super market shelf for around $1.00 a litre. So it will probably be $5.00 a gallon for you guys. I am assuming your from the US. I am in Australia. I hope to try aluminum sulphate so that the nasty sulphuric acid is removed from the batteries. Others say Epson salts also works. I just dont have the test of these done yet. Like you, I am also working on making a grid. regards Edward
hey all, The best ideas that I have read was on Volt daddy (i did a google) Gotta be the most informative info on batteries and this kinda stuff that i have found.

The lead that burns on fireworks contaminant the air with lead, similar from leaded gasoline from the past..
That would be Farenheight, since lead melts at 327.5°C/621.5°F.

I wanna know what is the conductive binder agent used to bind lead sponge or powder tougher with grid ?? Or is it just done by hydrologic pressure ?
And baking the plates sets the paste firm.

You have not mention that how to make lead plates
why dont they use sold plates, it would be more surface area?
Electron flow
The one that is brown like the soil, what is it made of, sir
that's lead oxide. If it helps, you can use the lead oxide and melt it on a piece of charcoal to turn it back into lead metal.

You'll need to melt lead and lead oxide separately. Then will need also to melt the grids. At a higher temperature.
