I have great respect for the hard work shown but my goodness, this can double as a "how to ensure that, in the unlikely event of not dying from lead poisoning, something else will get you" instruction video.
Poisoning by lead, Mercury, etc only happens if it somehow works its way into your system in a large quantity, handling or exposure by itself is not dangerous, only if you inhale powdered lead or stick a large open wound in a bag of powdered metal or somehow eat a big spoon of metal does it become dangerous, unlike poisonous gases you really have to work hard to get metal poisoning.
Here in Tunisia we have battery manufacturing, industrial of course but part of the recycling is done by hand because disassembling the old batteries is not easily automated unless you just crush them.
This was standard practice even in the west during the early lead acid battery days. Early car owners could buy moulds to cast new terminal posts onto their starter batteries if they were to be damaged. Hands on skills were much more routine and labour was a large component of the production process because it did not have any real capital cost like an expensive machine.
They are converting PbO2 into Pb3O4. It's done by heating. Addition of flammable liquid helps . The first heating is to evaporate away all moisture. With the shovel they see that dark brown PbO2 changes to the red/pink colour of Pb3O4.
