Thanks for all the info, you've helped me a few times, I picked up a 93 FLSTN about a year ago, who ever had it before me put a springer on it and got rid of all the cowhide except for the seat, not sure why but after watching you, I lowered the shocks and springer put a bare bones seat and changed the handlebars, it made a heck of a difference, thanks again

What would be the Autolite plug for a 79 Shovelhead FXEF with some engine work done like 30 over pistons and a mild cam. Thanks buddy keep on wrenching love what you’re doing.

    Another excellent video.
Im just about to put an Linkert carb on my knuckle Head, had an S&S Super E ( shorty) on before, but l always had some problems while kick start it.
I gave up the Voltpack and put an original Releay on it and The engine works better.
My problem( I guess) with the Super E carburetor is that the gasoline evaporates a bit before it goes into the Cylinders, that's my guess so far.
Right know Im in Sweden, and My bike are in Spain, so I guess I will not get it running for until I get down to Spain in October.
Thanks again Billy for this informative Video

    hate those 'oil events'.
a little OTT changing out to a Linkert, the Mikuni is tuneable.
now if it had been fitted with a wal phillips fuel injector i could understand swapping over.
all good stuff, keeping people riding motorcycles.

First thing I do is check the pushrod clearance. It is more often that than ignition or carb in my experience. Someone with a 64 XLCH went on a 500 mile trip and the bike started being hard to start. It eventually died altogether when he was almost home. When he brought it to me it kicked like the spark plugs were out. Zero compression. Both exhaust pushrods had tightened up so much that they were keeping the valves lifted. A pushrod adjustment and it started third kick. Boy was he relieved. He was sure it was a top end job.

  • @ceesklumper

So two main causes, no consistent spark and some valves too tight. Nice job diagnosing, very simple mechanicals at the end of the day

Billy, Quick question. So there is no need to put anything on the Fuel Strainer threads to prevent leaks? Also for the Fuel inlet to the Strainer I was going to convert to a barbed style that also screws on so I have the same concerns about how to treat these connections.

To take a saying out of Jay Leno's lexicon this is basically "Agricultural" in nature. These are the easiest motors to get going. They only need a couple of things and they go. My favorite is a mag shovel with a kick. They run well. Sound the best to me, and are always reliable. But a Knuck is no different and neither is an old Pan. They made em like this so you can keep em going. And frankly that's where technology was. The simpler, the better. To me
