Just ordered my 556 and came across this video. OMG! Thankyou. I feel so much more confident doing this now. My first emulator and was worried I might mess it up.
Glad I could help!
Great tutorial, you are the only one that provide comprehensive details on how to setup this console.
Glad it helped
Agreed, I finally got mine after being on the fence and Joey's videos were the deciding factor because he really uncomplicated the setup. It came today and I'll probably start using the included roms until I get my personal sd card ready to go.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Hey man, I just got this handheld a few days ago and have some questions.
I have a Dolphin emulator installed on my PC with modded games and my settings (controls, graphics mods, etc.), How do I import all of them to the device? I think connecting the rg556 to my PC and copying all the files to it would work but I'm not sure.
You're the man joey. Your set up guides rock. Im not even really grabbing devices anymore but I still watch 😂
I appreciate how this should have been a quick guide but it was so comprehensive. ❤❤❤ always love your content🎉
Glad it was helpful!
Congrats on crossing the 20K milestone 💪 to more success to you. 🍻
Thank you! You too!
Can’t thank you enough for this video, absolutely fantastic. Ordered my RG556 as my first android retro handheld and this video will help so much setting it up 👍
Fantastic video, thanks so much. I got the 556 without an sd card and had a million questions. God bless you for this!
Glad it helped!
Love my 556, had it for a week and you helped me alot with setting this beast up🔥🔥🔥
Great to hear!
@@JoeysRetroHandheldsyou recommend to buy it with a as card or withow it ???
Wow this video is excellent, can’t wait til my console comes. I feel prepared now
Perfect starter guide! Thanks very much. Great channel btw; you have a subscriber!😊
Amazing tutorial. Perfect set up in 1 hour or less.
Glad it helped!
awesome man, just bought this device and discover your channel, like and sub for sure! thanks for the work!
Enjoy!
Thanks for the video, I bought this device because of your video ❤
Great tutorial, as usual. One of the things I like about your Android tutorials is that, even if I don't end up buying an RG556, a lot of this stuff will carry over to the Android devices I do own and enjoy.
When you were downloading M64 I noticed that your Odin 2 and one of the Retroids are listed as phones. I'd never thought to notice this before, but Anbernic also seems to be using a phone build of Android instead of a tablet build. Why? It's weird when you think about it. Retro handhelds will spend approximately 98.7% of their useful life in landscape mode. Stock "Tablet Android" has a number of quality of life improvements over "Phone Android" for devices that are primarily used in landscape.
Older Android phones could be forced into tablet mode by going into Developer Options and setting the DPI to 600. Granted that was back when tablet mode was more or less a glorified flag to tell apps to give you a few more buttons and tabs. I'm not sure what would happen if you tried that with a newer phone or handheld, now that Google has put actual effort into the tablet experience. If it worked it'd be a nice little upgrade for the RG556, or any Android handheld.
Sir, you are a good man!
Want ROMs Google is you're best friend.

very nice video, just what i needed, thanks so much. Subbed and liked. I ordered a 556 and should come next week. I' new to all of this, but I have just one quick question, how do you get the artwork for the games? Would I need to download special zip files that include the artwork? I have an older anbernic but that one is just as it came, not setupby myself and it only shows text, not as nice with all the artworks. Or are the artworks in the bin? and my old anbernic wasn't just setup correctly?
Daijisho scrapes the artwork, so it's all automatic!
First of all, thank you very much this is a great guide I'll continue to come back to. I think the game I've picked just doesn't want to run smoothly on this thing, Dragon Quest VIII PS2. I've tried Aether and Nethersx2 old and new versions, underclocking ee settings, hardware presentations, etc. I think it's time I investigate the 3DS version (crossed fingers).
Hi Joey
Very good detailed guide. Thanks for the efforts. I have one question if you don’t mind. Can I don’t remove the Anbernic’s installed emulators? Will Daijishou detect the original emulators that are installed? I tried and notice GameCube, Wii and PSX games cannot be launched from daijishou.
Great tutorial, i just ordered mine and was wondering can i do this with the sd card they give me? i dont want to waste all the roms it comes with and i want the front end and the emulators you downloaded.
Amazing dude thanks a bunch for this and the R36s tutorials! Was wondering if there was a way to set the Anbernic button to open up Daijisho?

@@JoeysRetroHandhelds you’re a fucking legend bro thank you
just ordered one. Already have the rg35xx and kinda wish I would've gotten something bigger to begin with but oh well. Regardless. The main reason I got one is for NS games since my Steam Deck can't seem to run ryujinx properly. Being how much better Yuzu works (having already found the apk for it) I'm hoping this little console will play the games that I'm looking at playing. Also really glad I found this video because the stock front end looks horrendous and Daijisho looks a million times better. Thank You.
Really thanks for this as always Joey. Question: in clearing the device and starting from scratch, following all instructions after, is everything (emulators, daijisho settings, etc.) set on the card itself, and can be transferred (e.g. copied) for a new RG556 device? or does this setup have to be done for every single device because some things are still held on internal storage?
It'll have to be done on each device, Android doesn't really do well with copying that way.
Awesome vid. Keep it up
Thanks, will do!
Un video espectacular
What’s a good charger adapter for the ANBERNIC RG556? I don’t have a pc to charge with it since usb that came with the system box
Hey Joey, thanks for the great guide! As a complete handheld noob, I followed your instructions step by step and got my 556 setup last night and it's running great! Only problem is my Saturn games won't run. Does Beetle Saturn need a bios file or do I just have a bad set of roms?
Hey, yep it does! mpr-17933.bin is the filename for the one you need for US/EU games.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds cool, thanks!
great vid joey - if you had to choose one would you pick the rp4 or this anbernic - can you give a few reasons why - thanks
I don't like the RP4, so this. I'll share more in my review at some point later this week.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds thanks joey - when you do your review can you say why you dislike the rp4 - it seems like everyone is favouring the rp4 - thanks
No secret, it's not comfortable and not a fan of the control layout or the screen. Pretty simple!
Hey! Is there something you would add to te tutorial after few weeks? Maybe smth you would do diffrent, or additional setup? Would love to hear more tips and tweaks.
Nope! But check the written guide in the description for some added items.
Great guide ! Thanks. But i have a question : Is it possible to remap the anbernic button ?
Yep! joeysretrohandhelds.com/guides/anbernic-rg556-setup-guide/#Remap_R_button
Hi! Thank you for your video!
I have a question, if I go to setting and click factory reset, the RG556 will be reset at the first time when we open it from the manufacture?
Yep.
Thank you for the guide ! For inserting the sd card, please help ! I had all my roms on a Sandisk 512 microSDXC card, when I put it inside so the logo/text was facing me, I put it until the end, no forcing, but it kept coming out, no clicking sound to stay in place. So I just maintained it by closing the lid. The device then tried to read the card, failed then asked me to format it. It seems I lost all my roms. My question: did I do a mistake while inserting the card ? I believe I followed the instructions. If I made a mistake, how should I insert it ? Thank you.
I’m having same problem as you
Im getting one soon but im a little worried uninstalling the emulators.
Can i do your set up then when it works ok delete the ptger emulators....or even keep them and do yours as well as preset up?
Question I just bought mine with the 256gb card and I wanna add some games of the ps2. Do you think I can just adde them to the ROMs file? Or most likely wouldn’t run it?
Hi Joey
Thank you for these great videos. I have been into handhelds for a few years but never customized any. Always used the stock as card. I am having an issue with some roms being recognized. Should I just start all over. I was using Roms from a stock card and downloads from cartridges. Would appreciate your response if you have time. Ty
Hey! It all depends what you mean by recognized, in Daijisho? Or another frontend?
If it's easier, can troubleshoot in the Discord in my description!
Thank you so much for the guide. I bit the bullet and uninstalled everything after messing around with the RG556 when it arrived. I feel better. I wanted to ask this question, but at the same time not because its kind of down to me to push a bit harder on.
Would you be interested in doing a deeper guide on the RG556 with other systems? I own a Miyoo Mini and its as simple as making a folder for corresponding systems and dropping roms. I would love this handheld to be set up ultimately like my replacement / equal to Miyoo.
With the RG556 I'm a bit of a novice to Retro Arch and setting it up correctly. I took your list of cores from your website, but I haven't really went further with it, setting Daijisho up, or folders for systems.
Again its really down to me working out the quirks with Daijisho but maybe this is something you feel could be a good educational video?
Apologies, may not understand the question, but for other systems I've done deep dives on most of them throughout my channel and a deep dive on Daijisho. You'll never be able to get the full OnionOS MM+ ease of use experience on Android, but once it's all setup, it's close.
Thank you for the tutorial of nethersx!
My pleasure!
Great video your very helpful 2 things my gc/ wii roms wouldnt read on dolphin and the xdelta and apk files for nether wont dl or update just says error
can both setups run simultaneously??
also can your setup be rolled back in case I don't like it?
Is it possible to download the roms using the device with the wifi onto sd card that's already inserted. So without using a computer. I have an ipad tho if that doesn't work. I would just need a flash drive if I was going to use that?
Yep, you can.
Hi i just ordered my own rg556. Thx for the starter guide.im not Sure if i reinstall All emulator. Some will be relaxed for Sure.one question: if i replace a emulator egal ppsspp will the home frontend still be usable? Is there a possibility to change emulator into home frontend? Thx

Hi, Rg Launcher has 27 preloaded emulators, is it possible to add more or are you forced to put Daijisho to solve the problem? I would like to be able to use the official launcher by adding other emulators, thanks
I’m having trouble getting ps1, ps2 and GameCube to work. The roms, iso, bio file won’t open. I’ve tried getting them from different sources. I have no problem with n64 and lower . I'm not sure if I missed something somewhere, I feel like I've re-watched this quite a few times now.
I'm having a problem where L3 is pressed alone or when pressed in combination it minimizes what ever app that is open but in Dijisho L3 attempts to select what ever is on screen / selected but all in all killer video would like advice if possible though ^_^

I'm sure this would have took days without this tutorial
Hi Joey. Want to ask, did you managed to connect to a monitor or portable monitor?
Yep, can't get charging and display out at the same time though.
Great question, my hope is to be able to use my LG big screen in my game room.
Broooooo I needed this guide, I usually go for Adin Walls guides cause he goes into the weeds. But this guide is AWESOME is very detailed oriented, specially for a newbie like me hahaha
Thanks man, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. You f*cking rock 🙌🏽
I just got mine how do I remove the control panel thing when you play a game I don’t like it there?
How do I add games to the internal storage , and how do I scan internal storage?
A couple questions if you don't mind. First, L2 and R2 don't navigate in daijisho but they seem to work fine anywhere else. Is there a setting I can check in daijisho for that? Also, I'm setting daijisho as my home app but it doesn't seem to save the setting. As soon as I select it, Daijisho opens but then pressing the home button twice takes me to the stock Android Anbernic home. Any suggestions for that?
The first is by setting triggers to both using the quick toggle, the second is by not pushing the Anbernic home button, or remapping it. joeysretrohandhelds.com/guides/anbernic-rg556-setup-guide/#Remap_R_button
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds thanks! Is the quick toggle a Daijisho setting for the triggers?
It's at the 13 minute timestamp, push and hold on that toggle.
hi, how i can put all the image for all the rom?...there is a "scraper" for restroarch??...thank's
I’m still a little confused on 2 things. Does deleting all those emulator apps from the android interface and adding that Daijisho front end mess with the menu when you press the “R button” on the bottom left of the console?
Daijisho is a frontend meant to replace the Anbernic frontend you see when pressing R. Essentially, you'll never use the Anbernic frontend again. You can also remap the R to Daijisho, I have instructions in the written guide.
Gotcha. Thank you very much!
Default Home App keeps resetting when starting up Daijisho wont stay as the default, any ideas what the issue could be. Also Daijisho doesnt launch games from Citra mmj unless I click on the citra standalone app first then works fine
You have to set daijisho as the default launcher in the android settings
@@RetroDaddyPH That is what I did but no matter what it will default back to the original for whatever reasons cant get daijisho to stay as default
Great tutorial. Unfortunately on my end Nethersx2 won't install. It just says "something went wrong. App not installed"
Please Help. The function button (the R on the bottom left) is not working for me. It doesn’t do anything and my friends RG556 does allow to quick swap front end. is very frustrating! How do i map this button to function as shown at 7:24?? Please help
My ps2 Roms are reading as zips in the directory for some reason but they show up as regular roms on my sd card and the internal. Please help
Xbox mode confusingly needed of course for GC games like Sunshine for analogue trigger use.
Hm, not my experience. Works just fine using Ns mode. (you can use analog triggers in Ns mode)
Is this good to do for this RG556 being my first system?
Hi, quick question, what's the best way to play on a big screen tv? USB C to HDMI cable? Or can I mirror the screen?? I'm sitting about six feet away
Mirroring would add latency, so yeah definitely USB to HDMI!
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Cool, thanks!! I figured latency would be an issue as well, can I pair a Bluetooth controller to the 556 so I can play without a cable running across the room?
@@craigbfd1 Yep, you can!
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Thanks👍
Possible to change that moving background to something less annoying (and probably battery-draining)?
Yep, it's just Android, change the wallpaper.
my pix emulator keeps crashing even after selecting the retroarc swan station 64 one.....I already tried every single other option and nothing works :( any advice?
if I do something really wrong and then do a factory reset. Will the device return to its original state with the emulators that are already pre-installed and with all factory settings?
Yes.
Does the default Odin 2 SD card work fine or should I replace it with another one?
Hey, not sure what you mean by default Odin 2 sd card, as the Odin 2 doesn't come with one, but if it's working in the Odin 2, it'll work in the 556, yep.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Sorry I forgot it doesn't come with one by default. My bad.
What happens when we can’t get some of our roms to play what can we do? Also can you show us how to delete the roms out of the whole device all together so there isn’t so much duplicates so we can re download and try setting up the roms again
You would go into the Files app and access the folders there. From there you can select a folder and rename, copy, move, delete using the menu.
thanks for the tutorial, I followed the steps but I have a strange problem, I uninstalled all the apps, I try to reinstall them from the playstore but it gives me the installation error on many apps, if instead I try externally from an apk it tells me update app but the factory app is already uninstalled and won't let me update. Do you know what the problem is please
I don't know what the problem is. If you have all of your games and stuff on an SD card then my advice would be to pop it out first and then factory reset the unit.
If you put all your games on the internal storage then you'll lose them when you do the reset. It's probably worth doing anyways because from your comment it sounds like you can't actually use your RG556 at the moment.
I bought this yesterday with the 256gb SD card. Can I buy a SanDisk one and just copy everything over after formatting the new SD Card? I was unaware that the one I purchased would be poor quality.
Yep, format as exfat, copy all over. Just be aware the roms are junk and you'll want to replace them.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Okay. Thanks for the quick reply! Is there another SD card that has the OS installed on it? Do I need to copy everything from that SD Card over to another new SD card as well?
Nope, OS is on the internal storage. The SD card only has whatever you add to it, so usually roms.
Nice! So I didn't completely screw up! I just need to buy a better quality memory card. Thanks for all of your help. I'm super excited to play this thing. I am almost 37 years old and I have a lot of experience with Emulators. I can't wait to play consoles and games that I never got to on an AMOLED. Sounds amazing.
When I load up the section with the pre loaded games it reads 0 games. Would this be an SD card malfunction? I’m using the SD cars that comes stock with the device.
If you don't see roms in those folders and the pathing is correct in the Anbernic frontend, it's possible.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds looking at the stock SD card is seems to be cracked. So I’m gonna assume that’s my problem.

@Joey's Retro Handhelds I think I saw it happening on this video even, but did you notice that Daijisho can NOT kill Package process when you need to open something else in Daijisho? You MUST clear out and completely close RETROARCH before you can launch anything else in Daijisho. Doesn't matter ehay platform whether its the same or not. My rg405m is NOT that way. I can just long press back in a RA game, go to Daijisho and open something else. But on the 556, I HAVE to close RA otherwise it just crashes.
also Version 1.17.0 of RA(latest) will NOT play TYRQUAKE pak files(dopa/hipnotic/id1) where on my rg405m works perfectly on the preloaded RA(V1.10.3) that came on the device. I co firmed this by downloading the 32bit version of 1.10.3 on my 556 and it plays.
Can you replicate these issues and can you please help find the solutions? I'm getting no help on Reddit.
Hey, these aren't issues. The correct way is to exit RetroArch using the hotkey in the video - that's the way it works on 99% of the devices and the way you should be doing it to avoid corrupting your saves.
The reason it works differently on the RG405M is because you have GammaOS installed and Gamma programmed the home button to exit RetroArch (the same way as using the hotkey).
Long story short - not a bug, Gamma just did it differently (I don't agree with this route personally, as it confuses people - you're not the first for this device to have this confusion).
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds I do not have Gamma OS installed.
I have the stock Anbernic OS with RG Launcher still installed. I also have the RA that came withvthe device. Telhe 405m was my learning device so I didn't delete everything like I was able to do with my 556.
@@-Airwalk1616- Interesting. Gamma added it to GammaOS because it didn't exist on stock for the 405M so I'm not sure what's going on there, but regardless, the right way to exit RetroArch is using the quit hotkey. I can't speak to other scenarios or other devices, and don't know of a way to change it to the home button (nor would I personally want to).
Also, I thought that's what Daijishobwas for. It's able to kill the package process(reusing the RA window) to open a new game/core/emulator) its not that difficult as I've setup holding select for 2sec to quit RA but, I don't loke that it works on one device and not the other. Why does my rg405M do it no problem but not the 556? Is it android 12 vs android 13?
Also, why does 1.17.0_GIT not play the Pak files for Tyrquake but 1.10.3_GIT does? ALSO I've found that touch functionality is DISABLED in RetroArch whe. You select "Hide Overlay whole in Menu" in Quick
Menu>On Screen Overlay. This must be a bug also right??
Spoke to Gamma, he has zero idea as well, so I'm not sure.
On the Tyrquake question, apologies, but I don't even know what that is lol wouldn't be able to assist.
Can I set up on my own without MICRO SD CARD and PC,download ROMS only with the console?
Yes.

I've tried reinstalling both retroarch and dijisho and it's still doing it :/
My stand alone emulators (N64 and PS2) are running fine so it's definitely something with retroarch :(
You'll want to follow the Daijisho section again, you didn't choose the right cores in Daijisho. I show that same error in the video and how to fix it.
Hey Joey thanks for replying :)
Retroarch itself isn't opening, even the retro arch app is timing out (just shows the little space invader on screen but never opens)
How do I delete games on the 556?
Do i really need n64+ to play all the games?
Is anyone having trouble with patching Nethersx2? When I try and install the patch it only give an option to update it (not install). The update option does nothing, and it doesnt install. (Ill have to read the Github instructions... )
ua-cam.com/video/XA0ad8e_eLw/v-deo.html
Same with me. I think it has something to do with the fact that Aethersx2 is installed already not Nethersx2. I quit trying all together because I didn’t want to mess up my PS2 emulator that is already installed lol

What if I don't want to use SD card and just go to google play to get games?
Android games can't be stored on an SD card anyways so yeah, you can do that of course.
@JoeysRetroHandhelds thanks cause I am not a tech geek at all, my patience is slim when setting these things up,. Last question do you know if RG556 has sega genesis on it and do I really need emulator even though I am getting the games from Google play
1) At 5:50 do you see that black box with MD wrote on it? That's your Genesis emulator. It's a free standing emulator called MD.EMU (MD because Genesis is known as MegaDrive in Japan). I use it on all my Androids instead of Retroarch. It's quite good, honestly.
2a) Yes, you'll need an emulator. These games aren't made for Android. An emulator basically translates Android stuff into Genesis (or whatever console you're emulating) so the game can work and then translates Genesis stuff back into Android so you can interact with it. You know how in, like, baseball you'll often see a Japanese player who can't speak a word of English being managed by a guy who can't speak a word of Japanese? So they'll have a translator who repeats everything the manager says in English to the player in Japanese and vice versa. That way everyone is on the same page. Emulators are translators for computers.
2b) You can't get emulator games from the Play Store; only the emulators themselves. This handheld will absolutely play native Android games from the Play Store. A select few Genesis games have been ported to work as native Android games and are available from the Play Store, but 99% of the Genesis back catalog has not and likely never will get ported to Android. You'll have to get them from elsewhere.
@mattdavis9601 yeaaahhh hmm I coming after you one my rg405v arrives lol

why swanstation over duckstation? :)
No need to install a whole other app, can use retroarch hotkeys, can sync saves, performance is identical, lots of reasons. Standalone Duckstation isn't really necessary.

@@JoeysRetroHandhelds How about PPSSPP standalone and RA? Do you notice a performance difference with RG556 or RP4P?

Hit x and scan for games, should be good after that
ive had a anbernic no brand sd card for 3 years that came with my 351p and it never failed once i got a 512 samsung evo plus i paid 129.99 for back then and it failed 3 times already its happening more now so the brand thing had nothing to do with it i done research and aparently flash storage has a read and right fail rate after like 10 thousand reads and right then it starts to fail but that number is doubled with good brands but not guaranteed they still can fail just as quick they have a protection that prevents them from losing data in failur but its not 100% so ultimately ur 2x better 90% the time with a good brand the price dont justify that for me i rather take my 100% durable 10k fail rate every day over a 90% 20k plus the price hike
for some reason the dolphin emulator beta doesnt recognize my roms..
i just needed to unzip those files......
psx retroarch 64 swanstation is not working for my ps1 games... i did all what was shown in the video.
Not working doesn't explain a lot, need more information or jump into the Discord 556 channel to troubleshoot.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds i selected the right core for the ps1 emulator, but everytime i try to play a ps1 game it just freezes and crashes just like in the video.
How can I hard reset this console?
Android settings, under system I believe. Should say reset.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds I mean hard reset, 'cause the screen doesn't turn on, I can't go on settings nor anything. I was playing GOW II on PS2, suddenly the screen got weird and turned off. I thought it was already broken. Apparently 1hour later it restarted buy still the screen doesn't turn on. I need a hard reset. I mean only using buttons 'cause the screen is turned off.

Hey sorry, I might be misunderstanding, but that timestamp isn't about the bios and what do you mean by when you insert nothing comes up?
