Thank you so much for this. Didn’t get the memo and made it just in time to buy tickets for Dallas! It’ll be my first tool concert. And I cannot wait. I’ve studied their whole discography over the past two years. Really an incredible group.
There's a lot that can be said for the production in Tool songs, but for me the most amazing thing is that for as complicated as it is it's also simple, it's still mostly just a guitar, a bass, drums and a singer, it's always so clean and clear. Of course there's effects, layers, mixing and panning etc... but it's simple and understandable, you can hear it all.
I love that you are not focused on reading the song lyrics while the music is playing. Like you said, just gotta close your eyes and listen. Experience it. Reading lyrics and such is for afterwards when you wanna deep dive. Great react! Cheers!

Amen!! Tool is on another Stratosphere Musically like No Other!! Yes this coming from your Geriatric Subscriber Again!! Initially perked my ear up when I First heard Sober and bought their Undertow album!! Was so Impressed as I haven't heard so much musical Art and complexity since the early 70s!! But the album that really Stole my Heart was Tool's album "aEnima "!! Totally blew me away as I thought that Great Artistic music was Dead!! Here comes TOOL!! That meditative trance you get into, the journey you take, the new perspective you have on life, that new way of feeling... all points to the fact that Tool's music is basically a psychedelic drug. Take psychedelics if you don't believe me! You'll see just what I mean. 😉 In one of their earlier interviews, Maynard talked about how what they wanted to do was find the right sounds to help people enhance their lives, stop smoking, be a better person etc. Hence their name "Tool," meaning they are literally creating their music to be used by people as a tool for self improvement (which, psychedelics also have that use). He MIGHT have been trolling when he said that, but idk, it makes sense to me.
There are few songs where Maynard's vocal track is in the front for the whole song but The Pot and Ticks and Leeches are two off the top of my head where his contribution takes center.
I'm really appreciating the breakdowns of Rosetta Stone recently. Perhaps a bit more balanced between vocals and instrumentals but I love the vocal contributions in it.
Certainly utilize what you hear as inspiration for better and new songwriting and recording ideas, also keep in mind this album was 12 years after 10,000 days so they spent years, literally, perfecting this album from composing and rehearsing to recording to final mastering, these cats are at masterclass level.
Fear Inoculum released 30 August 2019 just 4 months before Covid was released upon the earth in December 2019. With a title Fear Inoculum and song titles Legion Inoculant, Fear Inoculum and Pneuma (meaning breath, spirit) I believe Tool artistically came in touch with the presence of the alien foreign force of the fearful energy about to grip the earth and gave voice to this unseen thing with their music and produced a precursor soundtrack of everything that is behind Covid as it was coming onto existence. You said yourself this music is like a drug and you loose yourself in its presence. This fear upon the earth is causing us to rely upon a drug vaccine and loosing ourselves in many ways.
8:40 I remember reading in a magazine somewhere that Maynard talked about being a part of this band. As in it's about what the band creates together and not so much being about any of them being the star. I think that comes out in the mix, and in the way Maynard generally stays towards the back of the stage at their concerts, same as with A Perfect Circle concerts - although their music is mixed in a more standard sort of way. Maynard's pet project Puscifer is outstanding too, albeit a different sort of style project than Tool or APC, and he's right out in the forefront of those shows.
I concur, I was lucky enough to see them perform this song as well. It was a small tour, right before the album dropped. It was almost like a warm up tour. Just a handful of cities. My mind exploded after the solo especially. 🤯 I just remember that solo with a bright orange pyramid on the screen behind them. I had to pick my jaw up off the floor.
Gotta add to my last comment!! Maynard Keenan pride of Cleveland Ohio (ok he's actually from Ravenna Ohio, still a suburb of Cleveland)!! Cleveland Rocks as bands like Filter,Nine Inch Nails (Trent Reznor) from that Rockin town!! Can name many others!! On another note, check out the Deftones!! They're not from Cleveland BUT Badassed!! Check out the song "PASSENGER "!! A collaboration with Maynard Keenan!!
It’s just called an odd time signature, meaning they’re using an odd number instead of an even number for the beat. Like 7 instead of a usual 8. And if you’re “losing the beat” when you’re nodding your head, just keep nodding, you’ll notice that every other bar, your nod will land first on the downbeats, then on the next bar on the upstrokes. And it’ll just switch back and forth. That’s because 2 odd numbers always add up to an even number. So it just cycles. If that makes sense.
like any art, we all have our interpretation, but the lyrics are an indication that the world is falling into a descent. "mitigate our ruin, calling all to arms and order" "send a reverie 'to be, or not to be?'" "lest we cease to be" "freefall through our midnight, this epilogue of our own fable. Heedless in our slumber" These all work to an existential pulp throughout the song, but "Sound the dread alarm, through our primal body" cause its basically now or never. The appeal to philosophy and reason are the only appeals we have left, before we watch it completely descend into water (the many ice ages we've already had). At any rate, I love the melancholy and how the song builds to THE GONG which I've seen live and it really is a moment in music where you truly can get lost in the feeling of that moment, forgetting what you've heard, appealing to emotion at a core level. The song is a plea for us to start giving a shit about what's going on.
A lot of people wish Tool's vocals were mixed a little more in front of the music. But their philosophy is that the music isn't there to support the vocals. Rather, the vocals are just another instrument. MJK isn't the front man: he's a fellow musician whose chosen instrument is his voice.
They bury the vocals in the mix in purpose. Maynard regards himself as just another instrument in the group. He even tends to stand upstage rather than out in front when performing live.
I like what youre saying about wanting to hear more Maynard, but if youve been to a concert youll see him hidden in the back. TOOL is just 4 frontmen playing different instruments, doing their absolute masterpieces and using math to make the pieces fit
Facts. It’s a group that when you know what to expect from every member, it’s still just as good. Maybe even a little better cause you know where it’s building too you can kinda put your mind in the minds of the members.
You should really listen to The Pot and 46 & 2. ;) Honestly though, they have so many good songs! By the way, that "drop in early" thing you're talking about with the beat... Tool does a lot with odd time signatures. That's why it feels off to rock back and forth to the beat. They mix in a lot of 5/7/11 times. So, instead of being able to count 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and for each measure, it's more like 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 and - 1 and 2 and 3 and - 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 and... kind of like that. You can sort of just start to feel it after listening to their songs enough, even if you don't know much about music theory.

If that makes sense.
and also, the syncopation and accents therein 👍🏽
nice
this was my favorite track from the new album, very few ppl seem to cover it for some reason x
Welcome to Tool. There is no other like them
See them live!! Idk about the mix boards.
You gotta watch Ernesto Schnack acoustic cover of this song. He really brings it out on this cover.
That was so fun with you! Go see them MFR!!
like any art, we all have our interpretation, but the lyrics are an indication that the world is falling into a descent. "mitigate our ruin, calling all to arms and order" "send a reverie 'to be, or not to be?'" "lest we cease to be" "freefall through our midnight, this epilogue of our own fable. Heedless in our slumber"
These all work to an existential pulp throughout the song, but "Sound the dread alarm, through our primal body" cause its basically now or never.
Btw I don’t know what they do in the studio but they sound exactly the same in concert but better!
Cheers buddy
tool is a 4 piece band. every member is an instrument
A lot of people wish Tool's vocals were mixed a little more in front of the music. But their philosophy is that the music isn't there to support the vocals. Rather, the vocals are just another instrument. MJK isn't the front man: he's a fellow musician whose chosen instrument is his voice.
They do everything you hear on stage with just three guys ,which call their selves A triad 🔺 👁
... there are four of them
My therapy is you gettin therapy.
Tool use loads of different time signatures in their songs other than the regular 4/4.
Cant deal with all the pausing but i like the channel
If you want to hear Maynard more at the front you should listen to A Perfect Circle and Puscifer.
The lions are awake, time to fend off the jackals
Turnstile - Blackout
Ohh bro, once you really know tool songs, they can be great to throw on and clean the house lol. All the best ✌️
Facts. It’s a group that when you know what to expect from every member, it’s still just as good. Maybe even a little better cause you know where it’s building too you can kinda put your mind in the minds of the members.
If you like the slow piece-by-piece buildups, you would probably like Culling Voices off this album!
MAYNARD DOESN’T LIKE BEING ON THE FOREFRONT, you barely see him when he plays live
Hey man, it's the odd and ever changing time signatures that make you feel as though a bar ends early.
You have to do invincible man. Off that record
Tool only sounds like themselves
If you want more of Maynard beyond TOOL try listening to some Puscifer.
dude, your pause game is out of control.
You should listen to Ruler by Uneven Structure. I think you'd like it
They use a lot of timing changes and mixed timings.
