Stating the obvious, the human created world is structured for consumption and unsustainable growth/destruction. Welcome to metacrisis. Meditate, take care of friends, live small and real ... Another hot Summer !

That seems to be an OLD interview...because his knowledges are interesting but a bit obsolete. ADDICTION is an EPIGENETIC adaptation not adapted to external condition. EPIGENETIC reprogrammation is hard and long. Most recoveries consist in deplacement of the ADDICTION from a bad illegal activity (like drugs) to a good legal one (like work ) Peace & love PS : Gabor MATE is a better source on this topic

Good points. I certainly agree that addiction is not about the substances per se so much as the "dislocations" or disconnections involved. Stanton Peele made a similar point decades ago. I would add disconnection from self and nature (including animals) to his list of social and spiritual disconnections.
    ...
Dr. Alexander clearly has an axe to grind about Q-Anon (which is fine), but made no mention of the left-wing ideology that many have adopted as their religion. It is far more widespread and dangerous than a fringe group like Q-Anon. It has taken over or infected major institutions and media in both Canada and the US. To put all the emphasis on a right-wing fringe group and none on a far more powerful and widespread left-wing nuttery seems to be evidence of bias or a blind spot. Not surprising, since psychology is a field that leans left. As you say, the fish swimming in the water doesn't notice the water....
    ...
Otherwise, though, good interview with solid ideas about addiction.

It's unfortunate that his book is $50. I was interested in buying it, but that's a bit pricey. I understand it's standard for academic press publications, though. Perhaps he'll do a popular-level treatment one day.

Is that why Trump might be yet again President? USA infected by left wing ideology?

Isnt dislocation also the lose of connection with the natural world, animals that are getting extinct, forests that are disappearing, I think the biggest addiction nowadays is watching a phone , posting and scrolling on UA-cam, instagram en TikTok and believe that that is living a human live!

qanon as addiction has to be one of the weirdest takes ive heard in a while and ive been online everyday for decades - my goodness this is out there...ive noticed people who specialize in a narrow field for a long time, just simply don't understand the world outside of their domain...that goes for anyone...how many times i listen to a podcast with a wonderful host sharing all kinds of amazing information about their field, and then they make some random bizarre political statement...it's jarring, but again, we're all susceptible because we have such limited bandwidth to deal with the infinity of the external and internal world...

He got so close to it and really danced around the point, but I believe a lot of this roots back to late-stage, unfettered capitalism. It's exponentially exacerbating all of the societal issues he addressed.

We are not mice, and we are not simply determined by our biology. We have culture and history, they are just as important, and their evolution is not predetermined.
That kind of doomerism is as escapist as naive utopianism, just a cope for the unavoidable uncertainty of our future. Instead of accepting uncertainty, and taking responsability for influencing and improving the future, you hide behind the promise of doom

@@ElenaEvhaving been a heroin addict for almost two decades, been in recovery for going on ten years and am deeply involved in treatments and detoxes, methadone clinics throughout the city. Suboxone maintenance off and on a few times, I’ve yet to come across a full blown heroin addict who finds being labeled a ‘junkie’ cool. Or that being a heroin addict is a fun ‘adventure’. I’m not sure how telling the public that heroin addicts are enjoying themselves is helpful. It’s the worst kind of existence to be an addict. Society views addicts as throw-away humans already.

Until we acknowledge the lower astral energies as a mainstream norm, we'll never get close to understanding our reckless behaviour towards sex, food, drugs and thought forms.

A point that needs consideration is the human spiritual factor. If I'm not spiritually balanced, life as it comes to me, good and bad, I will feel a hole in life which I have no idea how to fill that can lead to addiction of some kind.
