The Sonic series as a whole intrigued me with its demographic. For certain games and stories, it caters to kids, containing a whimsical atmosphere, but for others, it caters to teenagers, containing more mature topics. I agree that the Metal Virus arc was an interesting arc since the Zombot virus left everyone in Sonic's world with a feeling of dread and hopelessness. While the series has its fair share of heavily toned stories like Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog, the Metal Virus arc is a far cry compared to the lighthearted game stories we know and love.

Also in my opinion the metal virus was a really TRAUMATIZING story for me and I also left out some tears When tangle get infected, see how whisper her best friend drive into craziness when she hears that her best friend was infected just broke my F*CKIN HEART IN PEACES and not only that one also when vanilla sacrifice her self for safe her daughter was, was depressing
In conclusion if you wanna see the metal virus arc you must prepare to let a river get out of your eyes *if you have a heart of course*
The metal virus was the entire reason i started to love sonic so much. I first got into the franchise because of the second movie 2 years ago and honestly by the time the hype died I was about to leave the franchise, but I read the comic and oh my gosh. I really wished sonic stories were dark like these. Since nowadays they’re just.. too safe? Sure you could argue frontiers gave us a dark story of Sonic being tired and his friends basically not existing anymore with sonic almost dying, but I don’t know man. The zombot arc is written so much better in my opinion. It’s amazing how they were able to tell the story even with huge bumps in the road like Covid-19 and It managed to be my favorite Sonic story of all time.
Also I little request? Could you do a video on the archie comics? I got bored reading them and I just love the way you explain things and it would be great if your told any stories like the champions story, the mecha sally story, the antis? It would be great!

You're not the only one! As a kid, the IDW Metal Virus DESTROYED ME. Worse, there weren't any new issues after the one where (SPOILER ALERT) Cream got infected, so I couldn't even see what was coming next. I fell out of the series for so long and never came back until 2022(-ish?), and I am so glad there was some new stuff and everything was resolved as they should've been. So great job, Sonic team 😅
(P.S. I always hated Dr. Starline after that and I had no respect for him when he (SPOILER) died)

They did Shadow so dirty but you cant blame Ian cuz Sega is making them write him like that.
So many great moments in this arc, they made the Deadly Six serious badasses in this arc nut it was fun seeing them get their teeth kicked in.
My sisters and I were on the verge of tears the first time we read the metal virus arc! Just imagine three girls lying on the couch trying not to sob their eyes out while reading a silly blue hedgehog comic together 😂

Metal virus really was a hit for me too. While I was reading I was telling to myself that "Nahhh either way, Sonic's gonna save the day and everyone's gonna be happy again, right??" When I tell myself that when consuming other media I usually relax, but when this arc it really had me on the stakes of me thinking "Am I really sure that this story is going to have a happy ending??." Even after seeing Sonic and Silver going super, and taking down Zavok I still felt the sensation they're not gonna make it with all the stakes the story's been through. But at the end of the day, the story had a happy ending, and with all that suspension building up just for a kids' comic, I was like "Dang.. Idw's really good with what they made with Sonic, its awesome!!"
out of all the comic arcs so far the one that got me the most emotional was overpowered. especially issue 54 & 56 😭
it may not be as visually graphic as the metal virus but surge and kit's story feels just as disturbing to me.... but making me cry doesnt mean its not still my favourite arc >:) (though from what we've seen so far of the current riders arc it may have a challenger)

IDW is really cool and has some emotional moments, especially during the metal virus arc. However if you think this is emotional, then Flynn's run of archie would make you evapourate. The metal virus would have been devastating in the world of Archie's mobius (where the idea was started).
Also you mentioned pre-SGW of archie, obviously there is the ton of baggage that is the first 160 issues or so, good and bad. Did you like any of it? What do you think of Ian Flynn's run after issue 160 and onwards?

This was a nice video. I like your art and I thought you did a good job explaining and keeping it interesting in the video. I do think that it wasn't entirely Sonic's fault for sparing Doctor Eggman since some of the group agreed with him. I thought that the Metal Virus arc had a lot of twist and turns and at points I didn't know how they were going to solve it, I liked Cream in the arc and how she had a moment to shine and Super Silver was nice.
Ppl who say that the idw comics are "too dark" clearly haven't seen games like Sa2, Shadow 05 and Sonic 06. Hell even games like the black knight had more of a dark tone to it

I mean the the story of Sonic is dark if Sonic doesn't save the world Eggman would have robotize the earth and made it his Eggman Empire which is dark for something for kids Sonic CD and Satam explored that concept and even Forces explored that concept but failed.

To be honest i was trying to get into the IDW a while ago but my final years of school were there too so it made me stop reading them. Either i love seeing these videos honestly. Ur passion and love for these comics its so obvious and so cool so yeah. Keep the videos coming. And unrelated note: as fan of 06 Shadow WTF were they cooking with shadow in this arc men....

5:00 Aunno, aren't kids having pseudo cerebral palsy cuz they're raised on touchscreens, then there's school shootings like every millennial onwards has the fear of being turned into ground meat by a shooter, plus every gen Zer has to live with the fact that their elders left them to die cuz it's normal to go to school maskless and we have to be normal at all costs (those costs usually being someone else)
Like I mean real life is way more horrifying for children than fake life ever will be. Plus the arc ends with a happy "uh don't think about how basically everyone died because the virus ate their bodies and replaced their cells with nanobots" everything is fine now ending, they don't even dwell on the trauma. I'd say it's more child friendly than school at least...

I do hate the excuse of using “it’s a kids show/series” to justify why things can’t be dark. There has been different Sonic series that have dark elements in it (ex: Maria’s death, some/most of Archie run, Sonic X season 3, etc) it’s how it is handled. Sonic should be an all age series since come on the series is 33 years old. But I do think the arc was started too soon for the comic. Would have been nicer to actually establish more characters and create mundane arcs but since it’s following gaming lore now, it can’t stray from the path too much. It definitely blow itself out of the water by doing all this big stuff first than easing new fans/old Archie fans on what this was going to be.
Edit: to play devil’s advocate: I guess it’s normal to have big crazy events in Sonic. But I do feel like comics and writing are supposed to slow down a bit to help get to know the characters since games usually reset the status quo.
Sonic always was meant to be an all ages series since day one though. Sega/Sonic Team employees like Al Nilsen, Hayao Nakayama and Naoto Ohshima said so.
