"Why Did you Leave your Last Job?" Best Answer.
Welcome to another educational HR video on how to pass a job interview. Sometimes we leave a job. Sometimes we are laid off. Sometimes we are fired. How should we explain to an interviewer (whether they are a recruiter or hiring manager), and how MUCH should we explain. Well, it depends on whether it is a first-round interview or a later-round interview. What we say also depends on whether we were laid off, left/resigned, or were fired. I give broad guidelines and example answers in all of these situations, as well as several principles that are at play. Knowing these can help to frame your answer.

I'm going to give you the best answer (from a former CEO).
This is the best way I've ever seen to answer this question, including its other forms: why did you quit, why did you leave you last position, have you quit a job, why are you seeking new opportunities, etc.
There is a big difference between what you learn in business school, and what you need to know in the real world - just ask any startup founder or business owner! My goal is to focus on the real-world aspects of business, giving practical tips and tricks that are not usually covered in school.
This channel is a platform to help entrepreneurs and business owners succeed. It is also to help the world at large to be more effective and successful. The world can certainly use more inspiring leaders, more successful entrepreneurs, and more capable managers - that is what I would like to help bring about.
Who Am I?
I am a practicing management consultant, former CEO, and entrepreneur. I have led many businesses to success, as well as several startups. Among other things, I have an engineering degree, an MBA, a master's degree in finance, and a master black belt in lean six sigma.
I have worked across five industries, and have worked in both large enterprise and small businesses. In the last five years, I have also been mentoring startup founders and teaching business at a post-graduate level.
Thank you for being here and reading this, and have yourself an amazing day!

Yes it was!
Yes it was.
Probably the most hilarious answer ever! 😂😂😁😬
I left my last job because it didn't serve me to give my all to a company that doesn't pay well and doesn't care about employees. To be honest our current society doesn't serve me or anyone below the 1% and I am happier now after leaving big corporations and uncaring companies behind.
Yes, transitioning jobs is challenging. I gave up a very good promotion and huge career advancement because my my children were very young and needed me to be there (single mom). But I built a strong career around their schedule. This info is very helpful. Thank you!
Because the company moved but they didn't tell me where.
😂
Hahahaha
Funny 😅
Lololol my Mom threatened to do that!
I hate when that happens
People quit managers, not jobs
Definitely
Not Just because manager, i quit because of the HR .
Employees could not have access to the HR everything had to pass through the manager first, companhia policy
Drill press operator: "job was boring"
Forklift operator: "couldn't get a raise"
Shoe salesman: "got kicked out"
Stone cutter: "job was too hard"
Chef: "couldn't cut the mustard"
Human cannonball: "got fired"
Trapeze artist: "couldn't get into the swing of things"
Chauffeur: "it was driving me up the wall"
Hatter: "because i FELT like it"
Sewer worker: "it was a crappy job anyway"
Sewing machine operator.. I felt hemmed in.
Maybe dont start Drill Press operator, its one of the less obvious ones.
You Rock! ASSuming you came up with these on your own that is.
@@catalhuyuk7 The sense of humour of some people is great isn't it! Cheers me up anyway regardless where the jokes come from. Here's another one Wheelchair Maker.. "I got tired of being pushed around". 😆
Taxi driver: "job was taxing"
We had a difference of opinion. I wanted to work there, but they disagreed.
Lol
Love it! 🤣👍🏾
Shows you how much "company loyalty" matters.
Brilliant
@@spaceflight1019 At one time this meant everything. Now if someone is at a job for three years that's a long time🤷♂
I dislike HR and hiring managers. They're not open minded people and always place you in a department you never wanted.
Because I didn’t have one break or vacation in 15 years, and I was tired and burnt out.
"Because I wanted to look for new opportunities."
That's crazy. I worked at Target for 11 years, NEVER had a vacation, I used my vacation time towards my check. I left for a bigger company that gave me 2 days off in a row. That alone felt like a vacation every week.
I left my last job because it didn't serve me to give my all to a company that doesn't pay well and doesn't care about employees. To be honest our current society doesn't serve me or anyone below the 1% and I am happier now after leaving big corporations and uncaring companies behind.
In Switzerland 🇨🇭 you have 4 paid weeks each year. Sometimes more.
Plus you can get unpaid leave.
Most recent interviewer (for the job I currently have) asked why I left. I responded by asking her if she's ever worked so much overtime in a month that she couldn't state her birthday, home address, and phone number. Then asked her if she had ever worked 12 hours a day for six months without a day off. After picking her jaw up off the desk she said I'd never work more than 8 hrs a day unless I wanted to and that weekend might happen once a month then she asked if I wanted to set my start date for a week later. Tbh I had become so used to mandatory overtime with the threat of being fired that I had no idea there were still places that just don't work over time and it nearly all volunteered if it does happen.
You never win when you are smarter than the interviewers
Because my boss sucked, that's why I left my last job.
People quit poor leaders, not companies
YOUR HIRED 😂
I’ve done this, it worked
It's crazy that poor managers get to act the way they do but you can't talk about the behaviors in a interview
That was so amazingly stated: "We always tell the truth; but we don't always disclose everything." I've tried explaining that to quite a few people and you summarized it so well. Thank you for that.
How do we know what to disclose and not disclose?
well because they refused to let me seek medical attention instead demanded i stay until the end of my shift or someone comes in to replace me but im not sure how they expected me to unload a truck with a broken arm flopping around so i said i quit and left
Call Morgan and Morgan and own the company
Thank you for removing the background music. It was very distracting. I always appreciate your advice.
It was a 3 hour daily commute.
😱😱😱
@@lovebug1180I had a one hour and forty - five minute drive each way.
There is a substantial difference, however, between being fired for most reasons and, for example, being fired for endangering colleagues or customers. If you were fired because you put your foot down to avoid/stop such behaviour then any company eliminating you from the pool is obviously not a company you should want to work for.
I left my last job due to health and safety reasons. My mental health and their safety. 😂
🤣🤣🤣
@@CB-kf9pg Funny but true! At least I was honest about it! 😆
@@samanthahardy9903 I hear ya! I'm just about there myself👌
Welcome to the list...
... they did not want to raise my salary to match my responsibilities 😂
In the fall of 1999 I informed my boss that I was building and commissioning multimillion dollar power stations and making less than a truck driver. He told me that he was glad that I knew what my options were.
He didn't like it when I exercised my options a month later. More money, less travel. Win-win for me.
I left because they broke many promises.
One question I have gotten A LOT lately from recruiters is: “So, are you interviewing with any other companies?”, “Which company?”, “did you get to the final round?” Can you do a video on that one???

@@TheCompaniesExpert thank you!!!
Worked for a great company for 34 years still in Cleveland 110 years old company the best in the world a diamond of a company nothing bad to say great benefits even today always have work Hats off to the president and owners I love that company🤖👩🔧❤👍
Who
Still in business mfg.
Interested, which company do you love?
They asked me to do the work of at least 3 persons paying minimum wages. I went back to temporary work, 2200 euros for 35 hours a week for full month, before in my 'CDI' it was 1400 euros for 39 hours a week. 😂
My coworkers were trash.
Literally, i was in waste management.
I left my last job, because we had finished the work and it was time for the new tenant to move in.
My spouse was offered a great position in another state. After discussions with my management and HR, it was decided that my remote position could not translate to my working in another state. I consider it being fired-lite. That is what happened and that is the only way I can really present it. Those who are remote workers need to know that this can sometimes happen.
but it is remote. why can't you do it any where?
@@Dirk_Mcgurk Since I am IT, I might be required on prem to in case of emergencies. Remote was OK, as long as I was in the same city.
Diplomatic communication is very effective and efficient. 😉💛
I had a job that I worked at for a year and was fired. I couldn’t lie on job apps and my resume about it. The first two interviews I had wanted to hear why I was fired, and I told them, and they told me I didn’t get the job. I considered leaving that job off my resume and lying about what I did that year. Eventually I got a job through an old friend and after 4 years moved on to a better job.
The last time I left was because my son was going to Penn State and I needed more money. I paid cash for his degree, no student loans needed.
I retired in April 2021. The plant closed a year later and is in the process of being demolished.
I was encouraged to depart my previous job in a situational response.
Fireman: I couldn't take the heat; Doorman: I couldn't stand it. Gardner: It wasn't growing on me; Sailor: I was stuck in the doldrums. Pilot: Too many ups and downs.
I was ready to do more and now run a funded startup with no college degree.
So why are you at a job interview?
Can't say, signed an NDA
Because I am a go getter. I need a job that is highly rewarding where i can wake up thinking about it and go to bed dreaming about it.
That last one is so true. Even in times where i revealed i was fired but felt like it was explained in the least negative way, and left without having any of those "awkward" moments, in other words still felt the interview went well- it never pans out.
But usually get the job when i dont disclose that information and instead have some generic reason for why i left.
"Why did you leave your last job?"
Me: "I didn't. I showed up to work and the place was boarded up."
I was asked a question, at an Interview similar to this, and answered that my Supervisor was excellent because he listens...the Interviewer looked at me like I said something wrong, thus I didn't get the job.
They cut our bonuses... While opening multiple new positions... ...which I was interviewing people to fill.
They eliminated our bonuses but brought in their useless buddies as consultants at well over 6 figures each
Your advice videos are awesome! I really wish someone had told me this stuff 40 years ago.
What happened to the background music??? I gotta say, I was initially turned off by it but then it became a signature for your channel and got me pumped to listen to you.
About to start interviewing. Haven't interviewed for a new position for 25 years now. So much has changed.
YOU are awesome!!! Thanks for the tips
How does one answer when the truth is that a person tried for 2 years to make it work and keep their job under a supervisor who doled out the full range of narcissistic abuses to 8 out of 10 of us in the dept. The person went on FMLA and was too ill to return, so resigned. The govt SF-50 personnel paperwork merely states "dissatisfaction with agency." Thanks in advance
This is exactly what I did, except I interviewed for several jobs while on FMLA and that way I was still employed at my work place although on FMLA. I took a job really close to home so it worked out marvelously because I love my currrent workplace and my manager. I see myself retiring with a happy heart.
My personal favorite, had a change in management and while I loved the job the new direction the management was taking the company and my 🎉career goals no longer lined up any more.
In reality the new manager was a b word that ran the small ambulance service into the dirt and ran off over 100 years worth of paramedic experience in 6 months because she didn’t have a friggin clue what she was doing or how to treat medics that had been doing nearly as long as her smug a had been alive. No I’m not bitter about leaving that job, that community, or the amazing work schedule, not at all. A hiring manager will never hear me say any of that though.
Seems very sensible and logical advice
I have been an interviewer once in my career, and this rings very true to the experience I had. We had a preferred candidate: an internal employee working in another team. Interview starts and this person immediately starts with criticism and negativity towards their current team. They didn't want this role, they wanted out of their current one. I stopped listening to their answers after that, because I was adamant that I didn't want them in our team. I was overruled, the new hire snowed dissatisfaction with the role within a month, gone within 6. Silver lining, though: their hire secured a significant, out-of-cycle pay rise for me
Truth: I was significantly underpaid, and lacked benefits on top of it.
Actual answer(with truth, but no negatives): "I loved my previous job, but it was an hour long drive. I'm looking to cut down on my commute. Your office is only 15 mins away from me, which is perfect for me."
It worked. I changed jobs and basically work the same job title and same amount of hours per week, but with $30,000 more per year + benefits.
How would a company that wanted to hire you find out you were fired in the first place. Former employers can't verify any information other than dates of employment and your position with them.
My last job I closed down the business threw the keys in the garbage and never answered or looked back
My boss F'ed me over.......
Thanks👍
This guy is Scotty Kilmer for the job market. Even the music.
I retired.
I'll mever forget being fired from a dealership for people coming back with their oil dripping. Why was this happening? The company provided tools were 20 years old and desperately needed to be replaced. Corporate also started having their on site managers start enforcing a new rule that prohibited us from using our personally owned higher quality tools. Mere days after removing said tools back home, the problem started to occur. It's not like we hadn't mentioned what needed to be done, but there seemed to be more care in holding someone beneath management responsible for the problem. I just happened to be lucky numero uno
I watched many of your videos so many times and they helped me succeeded in my recent interview earlier this week. Thank you so much!!
They called me and confirmed their interest in hiring me and will be scheduling for a third interview (working interview). It’s been 3 days now, should I call them back and follow up ?
Thanks, Rita!
There's no real reason NOT to follow up, so if you want to, YES.
Been looking to actually move up in my current company to make more money (obviously lol) and get off my feet some more since my current job has me in steeltoe boots and on concrete floors for 8-12hrs/day 5-7 days a week. Just stumbled on this channel and going to binge a bunch of videos before/after work. I already know my resume is good enough for getting interviews for slightly higher positions, but my interview game is weak.
Because my last job demanded that I cover 3 more states when I was hired to cover ONE CITY, the city I live in. When I voiced my opinion that no human can possibly cover this much territory effectively and safely ( I work in health care) in a 40-hr week, I got micromanaged so bad I had to go on disability for anxiety and depression. Why can't I just say the truth? LOL
After 4 years and 5 surgeries due to stress by harassment, it was time to go!
I left because I really, really loved it and wanted to stay... 😒
Tired of dealing with the public and customers, worked at a rental car company by the airport
I have never been fired from a job. Strange but true.
I’ve also loved everywhere I worked and the people I worked with.
Many are still friends to this day that would not just go out for a drink with, but let me stay at there house when I’m in town.
I’m actually doing this next month in Vegas.
I’ve had to move on because the opportunities at the next place of employment were better than what could be offered where I was.
You're hired!
Sometimes the truth hurts!
I was in the hospital for 3 1/2 weeks and was let go.
Edit:
Now in Trucking School pursuing a class A CDL.
Guess I'll see what opportunities that may create.
So basically, hr/recruiters always assume and never assess.... sounds about right
I never left any job, but I did have two jobs leave me. With the first one even the building is gone now and with the other, they sold out to an entity that liquidated the place and consolidated the machinery and technology to other plants.
How would I say that I am changing careers into a completely different field than my previous job? For example going from working in accounting for an accounting firm to going into software engineering.
I was pressured into piling more on to an entry level position & vilified for wanting advancement opportunity.
How would you say, that there was a sudden change in work culture that took the business in the opposite direction of the original founders vision for the company? I loved my job for years.
Love this video. Don't disclose everything lols.
I'm still having the problem of just getting to the interview... they feeling, I wouldn't write it was awesome
The company i left was great. I left because of my back. Now I'm wondering how to bring that up .
Because my current company refuses to keep up with wages from competitors.
Because my boss was a narcissistic nut job and threw me under the bus one too many times.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years??
A: Well...If they're still making mirrors...
I didn't get hired, maybe, because I told them the people at current job were running the company into the ground.
Good thing, because the place I was trying to get into ended up going under!
My supervisor never wore argyle socks.
The contract was fulfilled.
I would personally say I don't feel comfortable with discussing anything negative about my previous employer, with future employers, because that's disrespectful and clearly that question is not asked with honest intentions. That's a scummy question to ask in an interview.
I left my last job to retire. I had no need to work anymore, that was 20 years ago. LOL
After 7 years, they said it was not working out.
Other people I worked loosely with hated my boss and thought he was a total a-hole. But I wouldn’t say that.
I didn't change jobs, i changed bosses
I didn't leave my last job, it left me !
Yeah, I got fired. They wanted me to love them. But I hated them. So it didn't work out.
I hated my last job
They took my stapler
Because the owner all the sudden sold the company and the new ownership cut off our benefits within a week of us getting the news.
Because i didn't like working there two years before I quit
I was an unhappy experiment 😅
Can I say "they weaponized incompetence" ?
I retired 😂
breach of contract
I really tried to help, but you can't help people so demoralized they won't stand up for themselves.
So is not fulfilling you probationary period the same as being fired as this is whats happening to me i had no lates no sick competent worker the thing that happened was thai i was not trained properly on doing paperwork which looked like i was not doing my main job properly as a housekeeper😢
No. Those are two different things. Being fired is being terminated "for cause" (I.e. You did something bad). It sounds like you were "terminated without cause" which is like a layoff (I.e. They officially just didn't need you anymore, or could not afford to pay you anymore).
Dear Mr. Todd,
Is the offer "purchase two courses, the third one is for free" still valid? If yes, how does it go technically since all of them are on different platforms?

I left because they took advantage and threatened and forced double shifts
I haven't been working since2009
The reason I left my last job was because I was medically retired.
They paid me too much money, I was so embarrassed I had to resign.
I left because I was no longer a right fit for that job. The job was a downfall.
Why did i leave my last job?....... I was released
