The genius of this scene is that even though Omar WAS lying about this Levy made the jury believe him because he solidified Omar's credibility of owning up to who he was. The fact that Omar owned up to who he was and was proud of it convinced the jury to believe his testimony.
And he also got a good shot at Levy's credibility with the jury

Few actors get great roles. Fewer still get the chance to play a legend. David Simon might have written Omar, but it was the Michael K Williams who made him flesh. RIP to a truly brilliant performer.
Omar was a character that was only supposed to be in a few episodes but Michael's performance was so good Simon created an entire character arc that lasted virtually the entire run of the show for him, that is talent.
Make sure that white men don't get credit. That was his dying wish.

That briefcase comeback line is one of the best lines ever written.
Omar is a smart man, smart enough to rob drug dealers for 8-9 years and live to tell about it. I still get robbed going through the drive thru.
It’s nice, huh. Two of them taking money from drug dealers, but only one of them working for them.
The build up to this was great, McNutty taking Omar shopping for clothes
He was angry at Levi for insulting him when Levy was morally no different
The Judge's reaction is the best part.

David Simon is a genius in attention to detail. Omar says "I told the police what I KNOW"... not what HE SAW. There is a difference, and as brilliant as Levy is a cross-examiner is, he misses that slight difference but rather focuses on low-hanging fruit regarding discrediting Omar as a witness.
And Omar's line on never putting his gun on no citizen hits different when you contextualize the meaning of citizen via greek philosophy. He's at peace with being a renegade, but his code won't allow for the violation those who live out these principles of citizenry.
The Wire is a brilliantly written show!
It really is. What makes it even better is there was 0 ad libs which means all those quotes we all love and know we're written by simon himself. Genius writing. Genius level acting and character depth

@Boltshoko Molefhi WOW, that's a great catch noticing how Levy misses that little moment of vulnerability in Omar's wording. It really is due to Levy's hubris in that moment, thinking he had Omar figured out and could easily control the cross-examination. I hadn't picked up on any of that!
You have no idea how right you are about the "details". Season 4 still just floors me. I taught in Detroit for several years and the accuracy of what it's like to teach in inner city schools is unmatched. Simon put things in that I NEVER thought anyone else would know about city schools.
The scene that hit me the hardest was Prez finding all of the unused equipment in a room no one paid attention to. It was a very bitter winter day when three other teachers and I took advantage of the "snow day" and went to the nearby high school, which had closed after the previous school year. We'd hoped to find books and maybe a few other things. What we DID find was a room full of SMART boards all stacked up being unused. Just sitting there.
And then, to top it off, after we tried to move one of them to our building, we were told that we were not allowed to move them. Our contract with the tech company we'd outsourced to would not allow anyone but their own staff to move and install electronic equipment. So we all went without SMART boards another year. Yeah, it really is that bad and not getting much better.

That's the trickery of lawyer language. When they make an accusation "Mr Isaac, you like chicken wings" and then follow it with an assertion and a negative "do you...not", either reply of yes or no can be seized upon. See, people don't know if they are confirming if they like chicken wings or denying that they don't. If a jury hears it the same way as the lawyer plays it, well, to many that becomes an admission of guilt or not denying that they are innocent....for the record, your honor, I love em!

I love what he did with that tie. So irreverent, cheeky, and also showed his commitment to himself.

@@marioss2167 the DA attorney told him to “wear something with a tie” in order to look presentable. Clearly she meant some type of suit.
That’s not and never was going to be Omar, and he knew it. He wore his own style to the courthouse, albeit with the tie to “appease” the DA’s request.
Commitment to himself. He wouldn’t even change his clothes to something he felt he wasn’t.
But he had a suit when taking his grandma to church, hehe.

I love this scene. Particularly, I love how proud Omar is of what he does, because he has no delusions about it. He's totally honest and at peace with who he is, and he doesn't think he's above doing what he does - which is more than Levy can say.
Look at how genuinely shocked Levy is when he has his description of Omar turned back on him. Despite having more blood on his hands than just about any of Avon's crew, he has never for a second considered himself to be a part of the game.

Levy was secretly one of the most ruthless of the show. All others showed a conscience at some point, even Chris. But Levy was always unbothered.

I love judge phalan’s acting in this scene. You can tell he kinda likes Omar’s charm and wants to see where it goes. When levy starts pressing him phelan is watching Omar closely to see how he reacts to the accusations. Then when Omar turns the tables on levy, levy looks at phelan and he’s like “tf you want me to do?” Lol
“Wants to see where it goes” 2:22 Most directors wouldn’t bother with that cut but the fact they cut to Phelan rapt is special. Obviously it serves Omar’s charisma but also gives Phelan a tiny character moment

Levy asked the witness a question in his own cross-examination, he answered. It's funny to me cause he's looking at the judge for ruling, but he just looks back and shrugs, as if to say, 'well he answered your question...'. Levy didn't get the outburst he was hoping for, and the judge let him know.
@@user-pf4sk8im4b I think Levy looked at the judge because he wanted him to repudiate and correct Omar, but the judge agrees with Omar's take so he conveyed it with a look that said, "He's not wrong."

Just because we love him and he’s so magnetic it doesn’t mean he is the greatest. I think he’s below characters like Saul Goodman, Ragnar Lothbrok or Tyrion Lannister. But I guess, giving the fact that I’m not an academic about this, it’s all subjective

I mean, Omar wasn't created, he's a real dude. In fact, a lot of his confirmed real life exploits are actually toned down to make them actually believable to the viewer. The most famous being the jump off the balcony to escape Chris is much lower in the show (it was like two stories higher in real life). It's not the only time HBO has done this either. In Band of Brothers, the distance that CPT Speirs runs out in the open across German lines in Foy is shortened considerably on the show because the producers and director honestly believed that no viewer would believe how far he really ran completely exposed. Twice.

I love how the judge is just like "What do you want me to do, he has point"
Rather, it's "You chose the aggressive interrogation style yourself, don't look to me for defense!" Normally, a judge would have to reprimand a witness who would insult a lawyer like this, but that doesn't apply if the lawyer insults the witness first ("You are amoral! [... a parasite!]").
We lost a true legend today and this scene is just one of many showing the craft this man had.

RIP Michael. One of the most incredible actors I've ever seen, not just as Omar, but in half a dozen other roles. And by all accounts one of the kindest, gentlest, and most generous people you could ever want to meet. Gone far too soon.
He was great in Boardwalk Empire too
And in 'The Road'.
It was only for one season, but his performance in 'Lovecraft Country' was incredible.

I love the great detail in a later scene where Levy takes a long look at his briefcase before leaving the courtroom. That was one of those little details that really added to the life of the show. Like Lester says: "all the pieces matter."

Omar is the very definition of "to thine own self be true". He had no illusions about who he was or what he did, he cared about his friends and his community, and though it sometimes pained him he always did what he thought was right. An absolutely brilliant character in a series full of them.
Don't forget, Bunk shamed Omar pretty good later on, commenting on how hollow Omar's code was in the context of "how far we done fell."

God I love Omar. So confident, self-assured and grounded. The fact that he’s played by such a handsome actor with a killer voice makes him all the more likeable

I will absolutely never forget the very first time that I watched this scene! I was already a big fan of Omar after viewing the first season. Plus the added bonus of being/living in Baltimore I was in love with the show. But as this scene played out I couldn't contain myself. Tears from laughter streaming down my face along with an ear to ear grin. What a scene, what a show and last but certainly not least what an amazing actor. He is truly missed.
I watched the show for the first time a couple months ago. I literally watched this scene in awe, paused it, and rewatched it 3 more times before continuing on. Just brilliant. Brilliant writing. Brilliant acting from everyone. But brilliant is underselling what Michael K Williams brought to that role. I’ve never seen anything like it.
Definitely! Finished the show literally an hour ago and loved it so much. Omar is by far my favourite character and Michael K Williams did an excellent job. He will be sorely missed

There are a bunch of high quality actors on this show that I haven't mentioned. Every single one of them gives an amazing performance. But 2 actors stand out as the people who make the show (especially season 1). That's Michael K Williams and Andre Royo. They SHINE the whole time.
I've watched them all- Sopranos, Dexter, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, every single sitcom, and police procedure show- ALL OF THEM. None of them touch the greatest that is The Wire. The Wire is the GREATEST SHOW OF ALL TIME.
The Deuce is just as brilliant as The Wire, in my opinion.
Don't forget Felicia Pearson as Snoop.

R.I.P Michael K Williams. Thank you so much for Omar Little and thank you for helping to make The Wire the greatest but more importantly, the most important pieces of visual artwork for many generations to come. It’s difficult to pick my favourite scene, but if I had to, this would be it. Probably the most iconic scene, along with the chess game and the scenes Shakespeare himself would have been proud, Omar and Brother Mouzone in the alleyway, along with Bunk and Omar on the bench.

One of the greatest TV characters ever invented. In my top 5 of all time for sure.
I had an offer from the Baltimore Sun back in the 60s to write some freelance stuff for them. They liked a couple of stories I had sent to them earlier. That gave me a pass to ride in the back of a police car a few times at night watching the action. When I later watched The Wire I knew it was the real thing, that's how Baltimore was. The Wire was real, an amazing piece of work. And we have lost a great actor who brought it to life.
The writing on this show is poetry. Perfection. I can watch this scene a hundred times and still amazed. “It’s all in the game.”

Omar was instantly my favorite character on the wire series.
Hearing about his passing was saddening beyond belief, literally... I was literally shaking my head in disbelief for a whole 2minutes when I saw the headline. 😢
It's an amazing piece of acting when Omar seem to have an idea or thought he lacks the language to properly explain, so he comes up with a metaphor involving the brief case his eyes caught to make his point. It's so easy to overact such things by duration, but here Michael Kenneth Williams performs the body language within a split second.
Omar has one of the best character arcs in the show. He’s presented as lower than the low at first, and throughout the series just delivers time and time again. By the time he dies, it almost feels like a protagonist death despite his ways

After seeing Levy constantly get away with his parasitic ways, this was so satisfying to see. And it was made better when Judge Phelan completely demolished him in their next scene
Literally one of the greatest characters I've ever personally seen in my life. Omar Little and the Wire as a whole was one of the first things I saw that ever made me want to become a writer. RIP Michael Williams. And thank you. For being such an inspiration to myself and others.

In a lesser show, Omar would have started a dramatic monologue pontificating on the nature of justice and democracy and blah blah blah, but on The Wire, he conveyed everything he needed to with a few lines
The best part about it is that when Omar says that he is not accusing the lawyer of being morally lesser or himself morally greater. He sees the bigger picture and that it is what it is. All part of the game we all play. Whether right or wrong this is just the way it is.
