Thanks for watching my THIRD Scene Remix, please LIKE & COMMENT on it/my others linked above and SUB if you haven't in order to help my channel grow.
This time I'm extracting scenes from Season 1 episodes 4-6 of HBO’s The Wire and trying to retell the story of Reasonable Bill Rawls. I hope you appreciate my amateur but sincere efforts to create some content from the greatest show ever, and the Dark Souls of dramas.
🎥 DIRECTOR’S NOTES 🎬
🎬 I had to edit nudity out of this one for UA-cam like the naked victim and Jay’s behind, and hardcore Wire fans will know how much dialogue I’ve cut (McNulty and Kima talking to Omar in the cemetery might cause you to think I have the same condition as Tommy Wiseau), but I wanted to make this my own edit, be something that new fans could digest plus not be too long, and I think there’s still a clear direction in the story conveyed (best I could do).
🆕 JOIN The Cool-op to get the inside scoop on the next Scene Remixes, talk The Wire, and/or just stay up with what's happening on this channel! discord.gg/AcABuQedxq 👀.
I hope you all enjoy this one, it was quite a labor trying to make sense of this storyline from three different episodes, but I wanted to put something together that start to finish shows how reasonable Bill Rawls is. McNulty is an out of proportion to every other facet of his humanity chasm of an a-hole in trying to deviate from The Company's directives, yet again.
Thankyou

Who we talkin bout? I can’t see it.
John Desierta
Jay is the most underappreciated person in a corporation, always being brushed off as a pushover. What he is is a man that understands the enviroment he is in and tries to keep it in harmony. He needs to please the boss, yes, but he also dedicates himself to the men under him, because he knows that without them, nothing works. He is not an ass kisser. An ass kisser would have burned Jimmy to please Rawls. What he did was to reason in a way that showed Rawls the value of the men under him, even though they can be assholes sometimes. The real reasonable man in this video is Jay.
Coordination work is just that. Managing everyone's expectations. Pleasing the hierarchy while being shitted on which trickles down (the shit) on the staff. Staff who usually don't understand that function will often mark the coordinator as an azzhole.
This is the position you don't want to keep for too long because it'll literally kill you because of the constant stress and disapproval.
The show runners choosing a fat man for that role is very accurate.
Yea nah, cut the crap.
Jay is an ass kisser but he’s ALSO dedicated to good police work.
"Rhetorical and reasonable."
Jay is such a kissass I love it.

Landsman is a fantastic bridge character. In one scene, he's submissive af, pleading his case to his superior, and is grateful to have made an impact. In another scene, Landsman is the king of homicide, doling out individual responsibilities and utterly confident in his interactions. He's a minor character, but he adds so much realism to the various hierarchies we all find ourselves in at some point.
He’s literally a bridge, you could cross a ravine on him. All jokes aside nice analysis yes, Jay is an excellent middleman who knows how to play all sides and stay safe.
Played the game as good as anyone in series
Landsman was only playing submissive to placate Rawls and get him engaged in the conversation, but when it came time to hammer his point home, Jay looked Rawls right in the eyes, pointed his finger at him, and delivered his message with conviction. "It's also what makes him good PO-lice."
Jay almost seemed like the superior officer in that moment, and you could see the concession on Rawls' face. He knew Jay was right.
Plus his line about visigoths baying for Roman blood you wouldn’t expect him to know history like that
No shit sherlock, he's a Sgt. A middle manager. He's subordinate to Rawls and detective like 'Nulty are subordinate to him. This is what effective middle management looks like.
Landsman explains to Rawls why his mortal enemy is still indeed a huge benefit to the department and Rawls as well. Rawls acquiesces. Why? Because Bill Rawls is a reasonable man!
That he is, reasonable and rhetorical
Everywhere I go, I hear, "Bill Rawls is a reasonable man." Even now, 20 years later.

I believe it was used 3 times in the show, twice by Rawls
Fun fact: 3:50 McNulty and Bunk solve the Case using only the F-word intentionally. David Simon, the writer and director of the series, said he got a complaint saying that they used too many cuss words. So he made this episode, especially for that person who complained
Thanks for the trivia. Personally it’s one of the most cringey scenes to me but I know I’m in the minority on that opinion. Even more of a minority opinion from me is the desk scene, I think that’s the absolute cringiest, ham fisted scene in the entire show.

I’m so glad the wire was shot on film. It makes all the difference when you watch episodes that are over 20 years old and they look very clean and crisp.
1:30 - Landsman knew the old adage: "After you've closed the deal, stop selling." He got what he came in there for, and he didn't say another mumbling word, just took the win and walked out quietly. Jay was always smarter than he was given credit for, and he seemed to play every angle perfectly. Who else could've defused so many potential bombs from going off between Rawls and Jimmy?

@@k33p1tc00ltrue. I love this stuff, and especially this “Reasonable Rawls” one.
This whole cast was perfection in this show.
the cast was modernity, so I give the nod to david simon
Very reasonable
Jay’s plea to Rawls in the beginning to ask for Jimmy back was basically his same eulogy at Jimmy’s wake. “He’s an asshole but he gives us the clearances.”
Sgt Landsman is one of my lowkey favourite characters on the wire. My take on him after several rewatches is that he's the consumate middle between the Jimmy McNulty cop (good/unsuccessful career/rebel/dedicated police and Major Rawls (system/career climbing/juke the stats/police). Even his casting as middle rank/complacent & overweight is based on his middle-man status. Seems like he was good enough to be murder police and even gain Jimmy's respect but somewhere along the line was pulled to the dark (Rawls) side. Thus, his biggest failing is sticking up for McNulty but not truly getting him back in line all through. Even his ranking at Sgt is a nod to his fence sitting. Not low level but not high enough to be a C.O. Great character depth even for such a fringe guy on the Wire!
Jay lets the chips fall where they may, it's very middle behavior.
Beautifully said!
Jay knows how to do police work, he shows he can be a smart guy, but he's passed on doing it on a regular basis in a way that doesn't favor him personally. Rawls flat out doesn't care, to his own detriment, and Jimmy cares entirely too much, also to his own detriment. Meanwhile Jay just keeps on doing his thing. Rawls is an agent of the matrix, Jimmy is actively fighting against the matrix, and Jay has learned to live in it.
Jay was based on a real cop with the same name. He tried out for the part but didnt get it.
@@Mrclean431 yes. That cop is Bunny Colvin’s second in command during the Hamsterdam bits.

Imagine casting a show where all of the actors have chemistry 👏 I actually can't think of another example of this. (Maybe a few comedy shows but chemistry is different in comedy)

@@k33p1tc00l Absolutely! Now anyone would cringe at the thought of Carver playing Daniels 😆
@ExtraCheeseProject no matter what role I see Seth Gilliam in I just can’t imagine him having the range or presence to be Daniels. This is of course all in hindsight so who knows how it would have turned out. He was pretty good as a Western Sergeant.
@@k33p1tc00l If nothing else I think he was too young to play Daniels; he was about five years younger than Lance Reddick and he also has a youthful face 😅 This made him perfect in Seasons 1 and 2 with Herc as they're both like kids compared with people that were only a few years older than them, the difference being that Carver grew up through the series, whereas Herc only seemed to regress 😆

Are you new to The Wire, a hardcore fan, or somewhere in between? I’ll try to give some notes:
The overall story is Sergeant Jay Landsman goes to his boss Bill Rawls to try to get Jay’s subordinate Detective McNulty out of “hot water”. Jay tells Rawls he could use McNulty’s skills because despite Jimmy being a self centered asshole, he really is a good detective. Rawls reluctantly agrees, hoping McNulty doesn’t deviate from what he’s told to do. Then Jay comes around with a file for McNulty and his partner Bunk to work on, and they go off to re-examine a crime scene a prior detective didn’t do a good job on.
I also heavily edited Bunk and McNulty redoing this crime scene, the real one is much longer and they go outside too, the point there was they were looking at the file the previous detective wrote up and realizing based on the pictures he had that there was no way the ballistics of the shooting of the woman could be correct, and they figured out the shooter was outside not inside. That helped them solve the case that Jay had sent them to reinvestigate.
Then McNulty goes back to the office and Jay is teasing him because McNulty didn’t believe the file was even relevant. Then Jay calls him into his office (I had to cut out nudity here then recut the scene so it looks like McNulty goes in there on his own versus being called in by Jay in the real version) and Jay reminds him not to work on anything but what he’s told.
What happens next is McNulty reviewing other files and coming up with alternative work to do that he wasn’t instructed to do, and then he pushes it even further by meeting up with Omar and finding more reasons to do that alternative work, then it ends (as in the show without further context) that Rawls calls McNulty into his office to do the “reasonable bill Rawls chat”.
Even if I didn’t cut anything it would still be confusing, and I just tried my best to make sense of it haha 🙏
The most jarring cuts were made with McNulty and Kima following Omar in the van to the graveyard conversation, you probably would have to know some names to get it better if you haven’t seen the show, and I had left out the prior scene where they start scoping him out, but even with that I didn’t feel it added much context or clarified anything so in the interests of time I removed it. I was hoping it would just come across as “two cops in a car seeing a suspicious van pull into a graveyard” and then you all forgive me for the butchering of the context that occurred 😂
why would špolice want him to works less@@k33p1tc00l
