John Taylor's bass lines are friggin awesome. Rio the track is a great example of his playing. Wild Boys Hungry Like The Wolf Girls On Film great lines as well. Duran Duran are FANTASTIC musician's. Awesome British Band.👍
Graeme Knowles damn right. Almost... dare I say a super group. How many bands can you focus on each instrument individually and be absorbed by it for the duration of the song. John’s bass. Rogers drums. Andy’s guitar. Nick keyboards. Simone vocals. I couldn’t say that of Even the best most iconic bands that I love.
They made the terrible "mistake" of being terribly popular. I'm a fan of Jaco, Stanley and Bootsy, but what John Taylor did on bass in those first two Duran Duran albums is phenomenal, both technically and creatively
@@jeffharder8706 A lot of people would disagree with you. People, especially musicians who are not even a fan of Duran, already knew about John Taylor and his legendary basslines. I study music and am also a guitarist. My brother is a professional musician and he always says that John's bassline is the core of the melody. Any bass player and musicians who heard what John did with his bassline in Duran's songs could tell right away that his bassline is the core and driving force of duran songs. The whole melody of Duran's song is in the bassline. Just listen to New Religion, Rio, Hungry Like a Wolf, Hold back the Rain and every single of Duran's songs if you need any listenable proof. Duran would not sound like they do without John's expertise and inventive.
@@theWARMJET I agree. He gets the job done without overdoing it. He even said, “Wow listen to that bass line, but it’s not about that”. It’s about what he brings to the song from underneath with punch.
I think that almost sums up Duran Duran (& I mean that as the highest complement)- I play keyboards and I think it’s fair to say Nick Rhodes isn’t the greatest technical player ( heard the same about Simons singing etc)- and that why maybe Duran hasn’t got recognition except maybe belatedly. It’s the combination of their talents that blend together so well that , to me anyway, make them awesome 😊
Taylor is known and respected in the industry as being an outstanding bass player. Music geeks, DJs, and others who are obsessed with music have known this for decades. He is one of many who are not famous for his playing, but those in the know are well aware.

Very solid list - and shows you actually know his work. "Last Chance on the Stairway" is one of their overlooked songs. Personally I like the bass line for "Hold Back the Rain" the most, though Stairway is pretty impressive with the jazzy complexity and variety.
I can honestly say there is not a Duran song that doesn't have awesome bass lines. Some may stick out more than others but they are al nothing short of genius. " Is there something I should know?" ...not on this list.....that bass walks and talks ....Tiger Tiger....anyone.....anyone..
Vertigo My Own Way Live Northern Lights Nothing Less Union of the Snake Shadows...especially live Proposition...simple...but funky Nice Anyone Out There Communication (The Power Station)
The Peavey Cirrus Bass Guitar Peavey gave to John Taylor & at first didn't like the look of it when he was first given it to me just doesn't fit well with the Duran Duran sound that has expanded over 4 decades... You can see an interview here on UA-cam were John chats about his Bass Guitar Rig Rundown that predominantly takes when out on tour & this was how I found out that John wasn't that smitten with the Peavey Cirrus Bass Guitar at first but the more he looked the Peavey that bass guitar grew on him & his ond of his main go to bass guitar's & though its got a lot of great sounds for a pricey higher end bass , it just doesn't fit in with their sound when touring... He has , when you look at his Bass Rundown other bass guitars that can give him the sound of his past bass lines & as he has matured he has eased off of playing bass lines that are like " Rio " & many other very busy bass line from their first 3 albums & for me he showed he's more at ease with his playing , as he's never really rated himself as a great bassist but on the " Wedding Album " he's happy to play only what he thinks the bass guitar needs to added , were as on their first 3 albums all of them were all trying to play & add as much content on every single song but since the " Wedding Album " I think he accepts were he is at as a bassist & he really doesn't care anymore with how he or anyone else thinks of his playing ability... Though some may think he doesn't need to change to other bass guitars , I say , I believe that if or i should say Duran Duran are playing older songs that have bass lines that he used the SB1000 & Kubicki Bass Guitars , as just 2 , then he should be playing the instrument he used to play those specific bass lines as the Matsumoku made Aria Pro II SB1000 & the Kubicki Ex Factor Bass Guitars both had very distinctive bass sounds that no other bass guitars could ever do & hence why I believe he should use various & specific bass lines from period in time , as his first 2 main go to bass guitar's should be the bass guitar he played on that album or over a period of many albums... This may , to many , might think this a little harsh but how can he truly deliver a bass line that represents the decade he used specific bass guitars on specific albums & songs & though the Peavey Cirrus Bass Guitar is a great guitar for what it can create from changing the settings it will never sound like an SB1000/Kubicki along with the MusicMan Stingray Bass Guitar that the late great bassist Bernard Edwards gave to him & I'm sure John Taylor has stated he's used that specific bass guitar on various songs but then again Bernard didn't go for the usual very bright & punchier sounding bass lines one could get when the treble is all the way up & again the MusicMan Stingray Bass Guitar has a very distinctive sound that when set at specific settings can't be duplicated & has a very distinctive sound... At least its great to see they are still releasing albums & I know of no other band that has recorded & released New Albums since they first started out 4 plus decades ago & may the make more studio albums... .....
the guy who made this list don't have a clue about DD songs or JT's basslines. do yourself a favour and listen to SHADOWS ON YOUR SIDE and other brilliant songs and then check your list again...
Rio is one of the greatest bass lines ever conceived in the whole history of music. And yes, it's an understatement.
Last Chance on the Stairway should be in that list, that bass line is amazing!
Totally, def in the top 10.
its a disgrace
💯% - my favourite!
I agree last chance on the stairway what bass line
I also think late bar
Another thumping bass groove.
Top 5 👌

the whole RIO album is one great bass line after another.
So True!
They got number one right! Rio's bass line is iconic!
duran's music is known for john's iconic basslines!
That's not true. Which doesn't mean that John's basslines aren't great.
One piece Fortest uh.....no. Granted John is wicked good, but bass is hardly the centerpiece of their sound
@@jeffharder8706 it's your opinion but the fact is the bassline is the core and driving force of duran's sound that is if you know about music at all

I’ve been following his playing for years. He may not be the most technical bass player out there, but he has his own funky style.
well, some arent that easy, but John works for the song mostly

The nice thing about DD is that they have so many great basslines that you can discuss for years :-)

How can Hold Back the Rain and My Own Way not be on here?!?!
Agree. My Own Way isn’t just top ten, it’s top five.
Last Chance on the Stairway and the single version of My Own Way are favourites of mine. And the night version of Girls on Film is a monster!
Congratulations for ranking Sound of Thunder!
silebon For sure.
Always like John Taylor and Duran Duran, big fan of power station, still have my mullet totally influence by John Taylor LOL!
Some Like it Hots bassline is super funky!!
The bass line in Wild Boys seems easy to perform, but it is not at all, and it is also very effective especially in live performances
he s the bass man!
idol
'Play that f**king bass John' 😁
Top 10 bass players all time
And honorable mention goes to "Wild Boys!" The bass effects are awesome!
Where is Shadows On Your Side, hands down the best JT bass line ever?
A View to a Kill - its criminal its not in this list - and also Late Bar - and Friends of Mine - JT is a super hero of bass.
SO MUCH THIS!!! You're SO RIGHT
Also Skin Trade and Proposition. It's criminal that both didn't make the list.
I was looking for "A View to A Kill" also. John Taylor is 100% official!
@@Sonyag1 I forgot all about "Skin Trade"! I'm going to put it on right now.
A View to a Kill shouldn't be, but I understand why you love it it totally fits in the chorus
This is BS! Where is Last Chance on the Stairway and On my on Way? That is some of John Taylor's best!
John plays the bass like a lead guitar.
I think. . .
1. Last chance on the stairway
2. Shadows on your side
3. Girls on film
4. My own way
5. Rio
6. New religion
7. My antarctica
8. New moon on monday
9. Hold back the rain
10. Planet earth

I love the bassline in night boat.
Rio. When I started to play bas my first 2 badd lines I learnt were Higher Ground by Chilli Peppers and Rio. John Taylor as an underatted basd player

Lonely in your nightmare, Kanadha and many many more
My Own Way?
It was JT's bassline in "Rio" that made me a Duranie 4 ever
Maybe would have been better if bass was isolated
Khanada has a really great bass line.
Vertigo
My Own Way Live
Northern Lights
Nothing Less
Union of the Snake
Shadows...especially live
Proposition...simple...but funky
Nice
Anyone Out There
Communication (The Power Station)
Why no "A View to a Kill"? It was of their best baselines.
Shadows On Your Side and Faster Than Light are two of the best
Yes,, specially "Faster Than Light" 's 81 Hammersmith live version!
The bass line for Rio is unbelievable; they really had a funky backbeat.
This is the casual fan Top 10 list.
At last!! Somebody notices!! #playthatfuckingbassjohn
But...as a true DD fan i must say that you missed "A View To A Kill" and "Friends Of Mine".
John is such a tasty bassist. What is there to say. He is one of the best.
Has no one heard that bass solo in The Valley? 🔥
I have always thought that one was epic
What makes The Valley even more impressive is he switches from a keyboard to a four string...
DA REAL BASS MONSTER, LOVE YA NIGEL?
Vertigo is an underrated song
This....this this this this this!

BLOODY WELL RIGHT!?
Exactly. This list needs to be much bigger.
Everybody would have a different favourites list😃🎸🎸
That first live track killed the mood.
John Taylor>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>John Deacon
The videos starts at 0:13
How is Last Chance On The Stairway not in the top 3... or even on this list?
Planet Earth top 3 at least man
Solid list but I'd switch out "Girl Panic" for either "My Own Way" or "Hold Back The Rain"(RIO)
Grandiiiiioooo
As if there would be any question about which would be number 1!
JT is the all time best
No Reflex?
The Reflex, A View to a Kill, Shadows On Your Side.....I mean.......
He should have never went from Aria to Peavey..never the same
union of the snake
Why don't you have that?
Great list, but I would have had CRY BABY CRY on here.
Río ... The best baseline
Duran Duran is - JOHN TAYLOR
Really "Come Undone" and "View to a Kill" the first Bond song to hit #1 is not on the list?
Faster Than Light.
They forgot about Girls on Film
