Throughout the Chevrolet C8 Corvette’s release all the hype has circled around one major buzzword...mid engine. That’s sorta old news but more recently, there’s also been talks and leaked footage regarding the upcoming C8 Z06 using another very “european” technology, and that's a “flat plane crank'' engine. That’s really cool, so today I wanna take a look at the C8 and first, explain why mid engine is, well, better. I’m sure you’re thinking ‘weight distribution’ yes, but there’s more science to it. And THEN, we’ll dive into the difference between a normal “cross plane crankshaft” and a flat plane crank -and why the Corvette’s move from one to the other is a pretty big deal. It took them over 60 years to pull the trigger on this technology - let’s find out why!

Thank you for a very excellent explanation of the LPMoI. Having read the motorcycle articles from the early 1970's, I think this vlog let me understand this concept of the low polar moment of inertia better than I've ever understood it before. Mid-engine explanation is excellent in concept and instruction and explanation. Pushrods v. OHC. Flat-plane crank v. cross-plane crank has a lot to do with the difference between euro engines and american engines. Crank journals and the crank pins. Crank shape: well explained. OHV; OHC. Alternate firing of flat-plane = better exhaust scavenging for various reasons. All excellent explanation. Efficiency includes weight and it includes number of parts in the ICE. A third type of cam-lift is gear lifted. Most often used in motorcycles, most often Italian motorcycles which have Desmodromic type valve lifter systems leading to the name Ducati Desmo SS which used some straight cut gears to rotate and time the valves. Just interesting.

He talked about the polar moment of inertia to explain why mid engine is better but it can be explain much simplier by talking about understeering : the less mass you have in the front, the less mass the less mass front tires tires have to fight against so for a same grip (to simplify) it will support more lateral G, so the solution is to move some mass away from the front.
It also makes the car easier to oversteer because his mass is on the rear but current cars' cornering speed is mostly limited by understeering

Does everyone always forget that the Corvette has always been a mid-engine sports car since the C4. It just comes to show that most people don't know much about the Corvette. However when the engine is mounted behind the passengers in the middle of the car everything works more efficiently. But the Corvette since the seat for has always been made engine just in front of the passengers, like a Miata or an SLS.

I was not too interested in the C8, but I've come around. I would love one.
That said, I don't think I need the flat plane crank. I'm no racer. I'd be using it as a touring car... one that I can tour the living hell out Western Canada with in record time. Rolling through the prairies of Alberta, through the sights of Kananaskis, and into the Rockies of British Columbia with my wife in the glorious cockpit of that luscious Corvette... sounds like a dream come true. That North American crossplane V8 would do just fine in that scenario.

The C7 had a "front mid-engine" configuration (engine was in front, but behind the front axle with the transmission on the rear axle) and a weight distribution of about 50/50 if I remember correctly. But the braking and rear traction that the C8 40/60 layout has does have its advantages. It's just noteworthy that Corvette nailed the "center mass" thing in the previous gen.
