      PingSkills Would you need to toss it towards you or straight up? And how do I know where to contact the ball if I can't see the area of my racket where I am hitting the ball to get the backspin on the ball?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  8 років тому +2

      By the rules you should be tossing the ball nearly vertical. You want to hit the ball near your right hip so practice throwing it up to that position. Watch the ball for as long as you can and then swing through using your wrist.

    I think you make some good points. Most people would benefit from improving the basic strokes. The reverse pendulum serve has become quite popular though and a lot of younger players seem to learn this serve quite quickly and easily.

  • @pingskills
    @pingskills  12 років тому +1

    A few people have commented they find it hard to visualise this for a right handed player. Just start practicing the shot by yourself without a ball and you'll start to get a feel for the serve. Also go to the ask the coach section of our website and look up video responses. You'll find a couple there on the reverse pendulum serve that might help you out.

    Hi Manfred R.,
    It does look quite weird but it is not easy for players to tell exactly what spin you've put on the ball which is why it is quite effective. If you do have a good backhand serve though you can use that instead. You'll find different players have difficulty with different serves which is why there is no one best serve. The best serve is the one your current opponent has the most trouble with.

      ThePurpleOne Take a look at our video on "keeping the ball low". If you Google that with the word PingSkills you'll find the video. You could use what we describe in that video to help you with this serve.
      You could try hitting the ball lower to the table or try hitting it more forward rather than down into the table to stop it bouncing as high.

  • @pingskills
    @pingskills  12 років тому +1

    Yeah, as I mentioned in another comment these skill do take a while to learn so don't give up too early. Try practicing it away from the table at first where you don't have the pressure of having to serve it on the table, just start trying to hit it. This will take some time. Once you can hit the ball more consistently then you can try it at the table.
    Good luck!

    A tip I would give, is to move your upper body forwards as you do the stroke. This gives the ball some forward momentum. It's a great serve because the swing for backspin, sidespin and topspin is very much the same, and you opponent doesn't know the spin until you hit the ball, much as what Alois said in the vid.

    You certainly can. With short pips rubber however you can't generate as much spin because the short pips don't grip the ball as much as normal rubber.

  • @pingskills

    When you go to a tournament, it's important not to try to many new things. Stick with what you know well. After the tournament you'll have plenty of time to practice learning new skills. Under pressure situations you need to know that you've got the technique down perfectly.

    Hey Allois, what are the best serves in table tennis? Which are your favorites? And how dues Ma Long do His weird trick shots!?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  10 років тому

      Hey Chris_Pro_Gaming
      The best place to ask questions is on our website as we check there all the time. The best serves really depend on each opponent. A short serve that bounces twice on the table is effective as it stops your opponent from making a strong attack. Deception really is the key. Alois' favourite serve is the High Toss Pendulum serve.
      Cheers,
      Jeff.

      Hi Bonnie Ip,
      Thanks for the kind words! With regards to Ma Long's backhand loop, it is just the same as any other backhand loop in principle but he just executes it extremely well. So watch our video on the backhand topspin (you can find it on our channel or on our website) and listen to Alois explain the main points. This will be the same for Ma Long, it's just he has practiced it millions of times!

    Hello
    You said it's easier to do a sidespin or a topspin reverse pendulum serve than a reverse backspin serve. How do you do the topspin serve in that position? A topspin serve has to brush the ball from "above" and not from below right? How do you generate a topspin from a ball by brushing it from below?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  7 років тому

      It's really a topspin and sidespin serve that we are talking about and to add some topspin you can brush over the top of the ball as you mentioned, but you can also brush up the back of the ball which is what happens with this serve a lot.

    Hey Pingskills! I was wondering why so many people use the SH grip instead of the PH (RPB). Even in China, Japan, and Korea, the SH is the most popular. I'm aware of the differences, pros, and cons, and I feel like it'd make sense that the ratio of SH to RPB would be around 1:1, but, obviously, it's not. Is it because the SH is just more popular and therefore people are more comfortable using it or is the SH considered by most to be the better of the two?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  10 років тому +2

      Great question. I think it's easier to play both forehand and backhand initially with the shakehand grip. I don't think one is better than the other and you can see that have been many world number 1's who use the penhold grip.

      Hi *****, you can think of it like flicking a frisbee. To get the ball over the net try hitting the ball slightly higher, and try aiming closer to you for the first bounce. This will get the ball moving down quicker and hence bouncing up higher. Give that a try and let me know how it goes.

  • @pingskills

    hey Alois, I don't really think the serve needs to be called, Reverse Pendulum "Backspin" Serve, when it only needs to be called "Reverse Pendulum Serve. Although the angle of the racket is similar to the original Pendulum Backspin serve, this serve generates more sidespin, and the usual output of the process is really sidespin. I haven't seen the ball spin backspin yet because when the ball is rotated by the serve, it only generates side, even if you imagine it.

    When doing this serve, I try to toss the ball close to my body so that I don't have to move my elbow too far to the side. It helps but sometimes the ball hits my jaw after the toss :( I notice that some top players solve this problem by throwing the ball into their body, which is borderline legal (or illegal). Any tips?

    I've been experimenting with the backspin pendulum and reverse pendulum serves but i can't get any type of consistency in the spin or the placement of the ball, any ideas?

    Hi, how do you return this short backspin serve? Sometimes when I return it, it goes into the net.
