      Well, I was doubled with a good partner and managed to draw against the best player in the tournament in group stages, but I got mentally tired by semi-finals and the serves I used that previously never got returned thanks to your video, got returned every single time. Maybe I shouldn't have used the same serve throughout the tournament. Dealing with the loss has proven difficult because the opponents were supposedly worse than us, and I feel bad for my partner because this is the last he can participate in the tournament. Well, I can always try out for singles next year. :)

    This video about serve placement is really an important one and should be shown to budding TT players as it will help them improve. There are many videos as to how to serve but to win one has to also focus on where to serve. As you play more matches you get the experience and it also depends on your opponent so accordingly the placement needs to get changed. Anyway it is a good video and a good demonstration too.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  5 років тому +1

      Good observation. Most players around the world serve like this and very rarely get called for a fault. If you are learning though it's best to get into good habits and toss the ball up nearly vertical. I think the rules should be looked at because the umpires very rarely call anything like this a fault. There is also room for interpretation of what is nearly vertical.

    Very helpful. What about strategies involving which side of the table to hit from and to? A short bounce that goes off the side gives an opportunity like a long ball. Also, the choice of side affects which side they return it to. I'd love to know more about how to use the whole table when serving.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  7 років тому +1

      Good points. Experiment yourself with serving from different positions and you'll start to see patterns about where your opponent returns the ball to and what works best for you specifically with your strengths and weaknesses.

    • @andreialexandruparfeni7129
      @andreialexandruparfeni7129 7 років тому +1

      I'd say that (right hander vs right hander) pendulum serves should be served (mostly) to the opponent's backhand, and the rest (tomahawk, backhand, reverse pendulum) to the opponent's forehand, since it is harder to return a ball that spins away from you than one that spins into you.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  7 років тому

      Interesting thoughts. I think it does depend a bit on your opponent. Some people actually find it harder the other way but I think most people prefer the ball spinning in to them as you mentioned.

    • @andreialexandruparfeni7129
      @andreialexandruparfeni7129 7 років тому

      Of course it depends on the player, but I think it is more efficient to serve how I explained because it is hard to hit the ball down the line (most shots would be crosscourt because of the spin).

    Great video, well for me its almost 90% short, because I am bad at long serves. I have a follow-up question..or maybe questionS - you said that short serves give you the first attacking stroke of the rally, but what if your opponent is very good with flicks and the second question is, between two serves - one is lower and bounces barely twice on the table and a serve that is a bit higher but stays on the table (5 or more bounces) - which one would be better?

    • @jehovaservant_591
      @jehovaservant_591 7 років тому

      I am a player who is very good with flicks, I've take short serves, from very short, to almost danger zone, to crazy spin shorts serves and thrown them back to the face of my opponents.
      If you were playing me, I would tell you to keep to the sides of the short table but be aware of where they are most likely to hit the ball, and be immediately ready to counter, there isn't much more to be done if they are better than your short serves.
      Of course the more spin the less options your opponent has for returning, just don't become predictable, or his flick will get it right where you aren't ready for it.
      Unless PingSkills wants to prove me wrong? :D

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  7 років тому

      Great question. In general I think the serve that just bounces a second time on the table is better as it is harder to flick because it's deeper on the table. You can also serve it a bit faster which gives your opponent less time. If your opponent is good at flicking maybe try some longer serves to keep them back a little bit. You can also try mixing up your serves, and if you do a really heavy backspin serve it is hard to flick. Great to see you thinking about these things. Keep working on your serves and practice those long ones :)

      Not specifically. Try experimenting with where the first bounce lands on the table and watch the effect to see how you can get the ball to bounce twice on your opponent's side. I am able to do a short double bounce pendulum serve, but i still get too much curve in the ball flight after the first bounce on the other side. To me, that seems to give the other player a lot of time to track the ball : eg. if I serve short to the middle of the other side, the ball will curve and double bounce to a right-hand player's backhand corner angle.I want backspin but also some sidespin to make it a more difficult serve to receive but I can't seem to control the mix of backspin and side spin.

      @pingskills  7 років тому

      It sounds like you are on the right track Ronald. Keep working on the serve and I'm sure you'll get the mix right soon. Try experimenting with different angles on the serve and watch the effect it has. Good luck!

    Is it good to serve nospinn balls (long/short) against long pipes?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  6 років тому

      That can work well. Since the long pimples cannot generate any spin of their own you know you will get a no spin ball back so it is very predictable and if you are good at returning this type of ball then use the no spin serve a lot.

    do you have tips on what spin of serve to use to set up a good third/fourth ball attack?
    What is a good game plan for a double wing looper , chinese penhold player..?
    When starting in this sport .. I thought that a good serve are those makes my opponent fail to return it... so when my opponent were good at reading spin then I have no game plan and most of the time fail..

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  7 років тому +1

      It is good to have an effective serve but as you found out you need to also have good strokes. With the serve, it really depends on your opponent. The key is to vary the spin, speed, and placement of each serve to keep your opponent guessing.
      Go through our strokes and techniques section of the PingSkills website and see if you can improve in this area. Good luck!

    Isn't the server in the examples tossing the ball backwards too much? In your serving rules video, Jeff explains that the toss is required to be mostly vertical. Thoughts?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  6 років тому

      Hi Matt,
      It's a good point that you raise. In practice the umpires must deem this type of serve "nearly vertical" because they very rarely call a fault for an action like this. I think the current service rules are too complicated and that the rules aren't enforced like some people might expect. If you watch all the top players they tend to serve very similarly to how Alois is serving here with being called for a fault. If you are just learning, the more vertical you can throw the ball up then the less chance you have of ever being called for a fault in a match.
      Cheers,
      Jeff.

      Sounds good, Jeff. I tend to hit the serve with a little more authority when I toss it backwards, similar to Alois does here. I'll stick with that. I'll never play in an umpired match, but am enjoying your videos. Thanks for all the great content! I watched your video on short serving versus long serving, and have had success using the short serve recently.

    Are you allowed to serve outside the corners of the opponents side of the table. For example a serve that goes left of the left corner of the table?

    When serving long, should I use top spin or stick to side spin?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  2 роки тому

      You should mix it up. Sometimes use topspin, sometimes backspin, and often add some sidespin in as well.

      @@pingskills Is not not very difficult to to serve fast with side or backspin? I'm asking about the long serves here

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  2 роки тому

      @@adamant8435 It is a little difficult but with practice it can be achieved and is often very effective. It doesn't have to be as fast as a topspin serve if it has a lot of backspin.

    When I’m servicing, does the ball have to land inside the opponents box. Or can I serve and it can go to the side and not straight to them? Not sure if I’m making sense

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  5 років тому

      In singles you can serve from anywhere to anywhere including serving down the line.

      PingSkills but does the ball have within the square area of the box? Meaning, can I serve it and aim for the sides of the opponents area. Because I see everyone serves and it pretty much goes towards the opponents and in front of them. Instead far out to the side

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  5 років тому

      No, you can serve it from anywhere to anywhere in singles. So you can serve it away from your opponent.
