No way I'd watch 4 hours of any other history documentary. Everyone has already applauded Mary for her fantastic presentation, but I think the producers and their crew also deserve high praise. The camera work and scene staging is top notch. And the organization required to get the trips planned, the lines scripted & recorded, all the pieces filmed, and to edit it all together so well is insane, especially with a small crew.

This was originally done as 4 x 1 hour shows. Much more manageable. As you watch, you can see the gaps for the commercial breaks, and the four starts of each episode. What you could do is watch until you hit the start of the next episode, and take a break, then return at your leisure.

I Love the way Mary orders her thoughts and presents very complex history as though it were just a normal conversation. This is a rare talent. It inspires a student to then go learn all the details they can. She has given a framework for further learning. I think she is one of the greatest teachers of her time.
She reminds me of the great Physiologists Arthur Guyton (no physician has published more work than him, at one point 70% of all Chairmen of USA Physiology departments trained under him). He was a kindly, sensitive old genius. that quietly inspired you to go devour as much knowledge as you could. Mary seems to have all those delightful gifts, so humble, so magnificent, she is.

I have been to Tunisia 🇹🇳 and seen the Roman remains, the Arena, and an old foundation settlement, the Roman Mosaic are fascinating because some of the details correspond with computer programs and that suggest the Romans being more advanced than how we imagine their civilization could have been. We spent a full day with the tour guides as an exclusion and glad we did. The Arena is cluster of tunnels with gateway, and being there can imagine the furious animals treading through these tunnels making their way to the main court of the Arena and there are claw marks imprinted in the stone and it must have been terrifying for the participant.. really was an experience. one of these days you may be able to do that - I am an historian (Late Eastern Empire/Byzantine period) and also a multi media developer. I am working on an AI simulation project that would provide "total immersion" in a desired historical period. One of the sensory areas I am most involved with is trying to simulate olfactory and taste bud experiences. That is quite a challenge but also, in my opinion, essential to recreating a convincing simulation. Imagine walking the streets of Ostia back in 120 CE, smelling the aroma of bread baking, the fish market, wood fires, animal dung, spices, tree and flower blossoms, leather, smelting exhaust, all of it blending into a distinctive "city" aroma.

She REALLY knows what she is talking about and that comes through. There are people who parrot by rote what the books say, and then people who REALLY know. That goes for every subject under the sun, and you can tell when someone is in the latter category.

How astonishing and thrilling to visit these historical, nay legendary sites (Troy, for instance). This is a magnificent tour from an authority and adventurer that we can relate to as she takes us through the essential origins of European civilization. I studied Latin in high school in Canada; how odd that an ancient and glorious civilization should have such a long arm to reach into the 20th Century and prod me to look back in awe. I am most grateful for this presentation, Mary. Romae adhuc vivit.

I don't know the reason for my obsession with ancient Roman civilization. I think it's something very deep that happens inside many people like me. What's more beautiful is that we share the same love for Rome, but we differ in countries and languages. It's really beautiful. I hope we can all meet to talk about our experiences with this eternal story.

I'm shocked I made it through this entire thing!!! I'm so thankful I did & it was worth every minute. My curiosity of history has never included Rome & the Romans and I've actively avoided it but I'm not sure why. Maybe because I attended a private Christian school until high school and I was raised pentacostal, so I've wrongly felt that my "Bible knowledge" was sufficient. This is the very first real historian I've ever taken the time to watch on this subject matter and now I have a new rabbit hole to go down. I did learn about Hadrian's wall in England years ago and that's on my bucket list but not until watching this has my interest in Roman history ever been sparked. Thank you! Teaching is such a gift and Mary certainly excels at her delivery. It's fascinating to see the places this took her. Thank you again for your priceless gift of knowledge.

❤ Reincarnation is real. It is spoken about throughout all religious texts. The teachings of reincarnation were suppressed, especially in the West. Jesus of Nazareth was the Messiah. The Messiah reincarnated in 1971 to try to save humanity. Julian Assange is the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth reincarnated. Julian exposed the lies and deception of the world governments via Wikileaks. Julian also exposed the killing and destruction of the Muslim/Arabic world and its inhabitants by the Western governments. The Romans and Jews are once again attempting to crucify our Messiah, and again, our hands are tied, and we are being prevented from stopping his crucifixion. Reread the Wikileaks drops and learn about Julian, it will become very clear to you what is taking place. The war in Gaza between the Palestinians and the Zionists was predicted and exposed before it even started (and has been ongoing for many years with the help of the West). So yes, to answer the question, the second coming of Christ is happening and has been since 2012 when Julian Assange went into the Ecuadorian Embassy in the UK.
The leaders of the Western world governments are collectively The Antichrists/ ad-Dajjal☯️✝️☦️☪️✡️🤲🙌

So sick to think that being a slave was not so bad, when I look at Rome I do not see what some of us travel from all around the world on vacation to see, I see the sweat blood and tears of people working their fingers to the bone to build, Plant and serve their mostly wicked masters who all lived like gods, they did not have cars so they were even carried around by slaves from one place to another, These lazy men did not build anything, they only gave orders by the whip and sword, I doubt if they even have the knowledge to engineer anything of good use. Read about Moses in Egypt, I think about Moses in Rome, would more fit the narrative

The difference in the way the documentaries are made between English vs American.
The American documentaries like the history channel have a professional narrator(Ed Hermann, Michael Carroll, Robert Clotworthy ) who provides a news like background and then they have historians from all over, American and British to provide commentary and explain things in greater depth. I love Peter Weller's contribution on ancient history docs.
Personally I prefer the American style. Making a star of a particular historian has it benefits but this style is more cheeky and folksy. I love Michael Carroll's voice and the Ed Hermann narrated videos of the revolutionary war are the best.

History is way more clear with a Hellenic classical education, and someone who speaks like a native Greek and not as an outsider/foreigner who learned Greek. Dionysius Pyrrhus requests the exclusive use of Hellene in his Cheiragogy: "Never desire to call yourselves Romans, but Hellenes, for the Romans from ancient Rome enslaved and destroyed Hellas." And George Gemistus Plethon pointed out to Constantine Palaeologus that the people he leads are "Hellenes, as their race and language and education testifies". Ducas Vatatzes, wrote in a letter to Pope Gregory IX about the wisdom that "rains upon the Hellenic nation". He maintained that the transfer of the imperial authority from Rome to Constantinople was national and not geographic, and therefore did not belong to the Latins occupying Constantinople: Constantine's heritage was passed on to the Hellenes, so he argued, and they alone were its inheritors and successors. His son, Theodore II Lascaris, was eager to project the name of the Greeks with true nationalistic zeal. He made it a point that "the Hellenic race looms over all other languages" and that "every kind of philosophy and form of knowledge is a discovery of Hellenes […]. What do you, O Rome, have to display?"
The ancient Greeks used the name "Italia" In addition to the "Greek Italy" and it was Ulfilas, a Greek Who Created the Early German Alphabet. The Greeks created it, the Germans copy it, and the English exploit it. 😅
No other small country can compare with Greece in terms of impact on human benefit.
In the beginning... God created the Earth, and in the light blue waters, put a small ship to travel forever, in order not only to give birth but also to transfer great ideas all over the world ...
    He called that ship...HELLAS! 🐬🐬🐬🐬
The only good is knowledge, and the only evil is ignorance. Herodotus.
