Film was made in 1968 and music was composed in 1896. I love Kubrick's films for that kind of magic.

Thank you that comment actually really helped me. Because I'm watching the nanny season 3. And they played the opening from space Odyssey and I was so confused considering I know that movie came out later. Then the show.

Back in 2018, I saw 2001 in 70 mm at Village East Cinema in New York, and it, unsurprisingly, blew me away. In 70 mm on the big screen, 2001 is truly a force to be reckoned with.

This is THE version of Also Sprach Zarathustra. One of the most powerful songs I have ever heard. It’s invigorating. Thank you Richard Strauss for this masterpiece like no other. And for the orchestra who performed this version over 59 years ago. Wow!!

I am so glad I gave this film another chance. When I first saw it in high School, I didn't like it much. Mostly because I love the book by Arthur C. Clarke. I felt it didn't resemble the book enough, especially with how the movie changed the planet David finds the monolith at was Saturn in the book and Jupiter in the film.
However, it has always stuck with me and I always found myself coming back to certain scenes, especially after seeing more of Kubrick's other films(The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, and A Clockwork Orange being the others). I had been thinking about it a lot recently, so I decided to give 2001 another try.
It's now one of my favorite films. And every major sci-fi film today, from Star Wars to Blade Runner, to Avatar to Interstellar owes their success to this movie.
RIP Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke. Thank you for allowing all of us to dream.

It was unfair how Kubrick handled this theme and it’s original composer, but it’s so timeless and important to the history of movie composing that I’m glad it happened.
I don’t think this masterpiece would be anywhere near as prevalent as it is if Kubrick didn’t use it in one of his best films

bit of trivia: tibia thrown into air by our ancestor 'transforms' into spacecraft is a nod to a scene in the 1944 Powell / Pressburger film A Canterbury Tale. 04:00' ( ua-cam.com/video/acH2x7M4ef4/v-deo.html ) In this film one of our medieval ancestors sends a hawk into the sky to attack its prey...this hawk transforms into a WW II Spitfire cutting thru the sky. I am one of a generation , who at ten years old was able to see this film in 1966. Over my seven decades i have been so lucky, excited to be able to witness and experience the thrills of: Bay of Pigs invasion, John Glenn , cassette tape, VTOL jets, Hovercraft, first Moon landing, radial ply tires, LCD watches, my first iPhone...the list expansive and hopefully continues until I have to tap out one day. Many things that i do miss, being able to run along side a London bus and jump on / off while its moving and being able to drive in the family car onto a plane at Lydd airport in Kent England fly over the channel, drive off in Le touquet France for a day trip !!!

I see it as he made himself worthy. Unlike Frank and other members of crew he survived and defeated HAL 9000. The Monolith and higher forces saw him as worthy, and actual proof that humanity deserves chance, As It didn't fully fell to the technology and forgotten their old ways. Monolith transported him into a weird room outside of time and space where he could make his final transformation, kind of like butterfly or second life. Thats my interpretation at least
