Machinery technician second class (e5). Pretty much a mechanic. A long ago time in my life.

I was an E5 before I left the Army, Those are memories that will be with me for the rest of my life. I've been out over 20 years now, and still hear from some folks from those days via email. Thank you for your service, and also for sharing your memories and your adventures with Shipwrecked and Salty. All the best to you.

Did you know one could make E5 in 2 years and 4 months in the USCG? I made ST2 in 2 years and 6 months.

Yup. I made MK2 3 days shy of 2 years.

@@CoastieReid Wow, things must have changed since I was in. Good for you. I told people who were in other branches and they did not believe it. Other branches aren't allowed to advance as fast.

@jonathanp1884 I also went from MKC to CWO TO lT in like 4 years. I made CWO on 1jun19. Made LT on 1may21. Stupulation is I was a MPA underway on a 270 and then walked next door to another 270 as EO. One more year on this bucket.

@@CoastieReid Wow, you really made rank fast. When I was in, I was interested in CWO option. Close to the end of my 4 year tour I was recommended by my first 2 officers in command to go to the academy but the XO (not many liked him) would not sign off, I was not always political correct. So I got out because of him. What is MPA? I assume LT is lieutenant.

@@CoastieReid Here is a story you may appreciate. About 5 years ago I ran into a man dining with his wife wearing a USCG Midgett hat. So I stopped to talk to him and he remembered an event that occurred during ALPAT 1979. I was ST on watch and detected a Russian sub. I proceeded to instruct the bridge which direction to chase it. "FULL SPEED AHEAD" was often a part of my conversation.
This guy was an MK of sorts.
