  • Archeologist Titus Kennedy and philosopher of science Stephen Meyer explore what the science of archeology reveal about the historicity of the exodus of Jews from Egypt. Is the exodus a myth? Or is there evidence it really occurred? This session took place at the 2023 Dallas Conference on Science and Faith sponsored by Discovery Institute.
    Check out Dr. Kennedy’s newest book, The Essential Archaeological Guide to Bible Lands (Harvest House) - www.amazon.com/Essential-Arch...
    And Join us for THIS year’s Dallas Conference on Science and Faith on Feb. 17, 2024: www.discovery.org/e/dallas2024/
    Titus Kennedy is a field archaeologist working primarily with sites and materials of the ancient Near East and Mediterranean world. He earned his doctorate from University of South Africa in Biblical Archaeology and MA degrees from University of Toronto and University of South Africa. He is a Research Fellow at Discovery Institute and an Adjunct Professor at Biola University. His books include "Unearthing the Bible" and "Excavating the Evidence for Jesus." Stephen Meyer directs the Center for Science and Culture at the Discovery Institute in Seattle. He is author of the New York Times-bestseller "Darwin’s Doubt" (2013) as well as the books "Signature in the Cell (2009) and "Return of the God Hypothesis" (2021).

    Meyers didn't dominate the conversion as many think. It's really just that Kennedy is a man of few words. That's why an interview format was better than just a lecture from Kennedy.

    Wow! It surprised me to see Dr. Kennedy in a discussion with Dr. Meyer. I appreciate them both, but I am particularly impressed with Dr. Kennedy advancing so quickly. At least to me, he seems to have moved forward quickly, but the older I get, the faster time goes by.
    Dr. Kennedy's drive to produce evidence is admirable and inspiring.

    This is very interesting. It seems like more proof that the Bible is real. Good job by Titus Kennedy and Stephen Meyer. However, as for the plagues, it still has to be explained why then were they occurring just as Moses said that they would happen. Why would the river turn red just as he said it would when he used his rod? And other things right after the other as he said. If the story such as the Exodus is being proven by Archeology, should we not also believe that the stories in the Bible are real?

    I'd love to have archeological corroboration in this regard - but I can't find where it says in Joshua chap 8 or 24 (or anywhere) that the native inhabitants of Shechem interacted in any way with the Israelites. (Note, however, there is no specific mention of conquest of Shechem in Joshua, which does lead to some speculation, since Shechem was apparently a leading city).

    Okay. So, there's interesting research here. The presence of Jewish slaves in late bronze age Egypt seems established by those textual and archeological sources. As for the rest of the Exodus narrative ... Nothing for the period of wandering. Moses seems, at best, a composite legendary character still. And it still isn't clear that the Jewish-named slaves rebelled and fled from the Nile Valley to the land of Canaan. Nor is it established clearly that the Hebrews were NOT in Canaan prior to that point. Right?
    I'll read the published findings to see if I'm missing something.

    50:48 Wait.. How do we know that the Pharoah who reigned when Moses first fled ruled for the 40 years that Moses was in Midian?
    I read in Exodus 2:23 (NKJV), "Now it happened *in the process of time* that the king of Egypt died." - It doesn't say when within those 40 years that the king/Pharoah died. How do we know he didn't die earlier within that 40 year stretch?
    For it also says in Exodus 4:19 (NKJV), "Now the Lord said to Moses in Midian, 'Go, return to Egypt, for *all the men* who sought your life are dead.'" - God doesn't just say the Pharoah, but *all the men.* Why do we assume that the Pharoah was the last to die (at the end of those 40 years) out of all of the men who sought Moses' life?
    Am I missing something? I've listened to many claim that the Pharoah before the Pharoah of the Exodus reigned at least 40 years, but I never hear them explain how we know.

      Nobody plans language. It develops in odd ways over time. Lots of word usages are not logical, but rather expedient in certain contexts. If you ever try to help another person learn your language, you run into similar issues wherein a usage doesn't match its derivation. When usage is the answer, nobody is satisfied, but it is often the only one. You might think of how idiomatic references develop in families. Oblique references are sort of oral shorthand.

    Amenhotep III reign using the most recent synchronisms is usually given to be 1389 to 1351 BC. If it began in 1400 BC it would still be six years too late to be 'Biblical'. And that is the only reason YEC selects it.
    "Now these are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the sons of Israel defeated beyond the Jordan toward the west..." Joshua 12:12 "...the king of Gezer, one;"
    But according to Dr. Kennedy 180 years later the Merneptah stele claimed "Seized upon is Gezer;" By the early date Chronology shouldn't 1220 BC be the time of Judge Ehud? Why, didn't Mernethah name the residents of Gezer as Israel? Something is seriously wrong with his history.

    The Exodus occurred in 1533 BC. It is a misreading of the text to mark the 480th year from the Exodus, since it is in the coming out of the children of Israel from Egypt. This occurred 40 years after the Exodus proper. We also can use the biblical chronology to place the 4th year of Solomon as 1013 BC. I address these in detail in my papers.

    How can you as archeologists talk about the so called Exodus and not mention Velikovsky who shows that the plagues in the story happened all over the world? I consider the religious story to come after the world conflagration for those who escaped. Filled with fear they made up stories why they survived and therefore have a right to the land of the Canaan. They are still doing it today.
    And it certainly doesn’t show God’s mercy unless of course you are one of the chosen. It’s like an airplane crashes and you were suppose to be on the flight and you thank god you were not on it. Never mind the 500 people that lost their lives.
    For example, archaeology shows us that the walls of Jericho were already destroyed long before Joshua was supposed to have gone through it. But it served the narrative of conquest.
    Stop making excuses for the destructive powers of nature and have compassion on those who are in the boat with you (or on the plane going down).

    The plain fact is that after the millions and millions that Israel spent on archeology to prove its birth right, nothing was found -not the slightest trace of the 40 years of 'exodus' of Moses and his huge tribe in the desert. What they did find in the desert and in what is now Israel/Palestine, are countless of way older statues of Mother Gods. Exodus is a story. You might say a beautiful story... but the Amalekites might disagree.

    Misnomer.
    It is the exodus of Israel, not the Jews (Judah) alone. Israel is the people of God in Exodus, not only Judah. There is a big difference between these two People groups. Using Euler diagrams visually demonstrates the point: Judah is inside the Israel group. These definitions are different for each scroll of the bible. Agreeing on terms is the first step in understanding those terms. Spiritual and physical definitions also vary. New and old testament definitions matter, as these definitions describe different people groups over millennia.
    As a Christian, Truth matters. Poor definitions are poor instruction.
    Let us define and agree on our terms before errors in understanding occur.

      With the possible exception of 1000 or so Samaritans, the only Israelites who have survived to the current day are Jews. That is why the distinction you are making is not one that makes a difference.
      Strictly speaking, the inhabitants of ancient Israel were Israelites,
      but since the only surviving Israelites are Jews, the terms are sometimes used interchangeably. In Biblical and liturgical Hebrew
      the usual word for Jews is Yisrael, (Israel) This is not a recent phenomenon. Jews have been the only Israelites since about the late eighth century B.C., when the Assyrians destroyed the northern kingdom.
      According to Scripture, 2 Kings 17, Samaritans are foreigners who were settled in the north, but the Samaritans dispute that. Most modern scholars give their claim some level of credibility, but all of the theories of who they are, and where they came from, are speculation.

    For Christ's sake, stop saying Moses "murdered" the Egyptian. The Pentateuch says no such thing & St. Stephen in Acts clearly says it was a justifiable defensive action!

      BCE is a secular historians' effort to remove the knowledge of Christ's influence on history. It stands for Before the Common Era, which is a lie, because many cultures have their own calendars. There is no common era. It has been widely adopted for uniformity's sake, but should not be.

    Biblical geographical indicators of the mountain of God.
    -- It took almost 50 days to reach the mountain of God.
    -- The mix multitude would have had no less than a three day head start on Pharaoh and his Army and most likely more when considering the logistics.
    And they said, The God of the Hebrews hath met with us: let us go, we pray thee, *three days* journey into the desert, and sacrifice unto the LORD our God; lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword.
    {Exodus 5:3}
    And he said, The LORD came --from-- to Sinai, [point C] and rose up from Seir [point A] unto them; he shined forth from mount Paran, [point B, in betwixt] and he *came with* ten thousands of saints [angels]: from his right hand went a fiery law for the.
    {Deuteronomy 33:2}
    In summary,
    -- Seir [Edom]: point A is North
    -- Mt. Paran [Arabia]: point B is South of Seir, and North of Mt. Horeb.
    -- Mt. Horeb [Arabia]: is South from Mt. Paran, and South from Seir.
    No detours Southwest to Egypt and the Sinai Peninsula.
    The scriptures are more than clear, they came OUT OF EGYPT.
    And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that *God led them not* through the way of the land of the Philistines, [the coastal route] although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they *return* to Egypt:
    But God led the people about, through *the way of the wilderness of the Red sea* and the children of Israel went up harnessed *out of the land of Egypt*
    {Exodus 13:17-18}
    ... [Day one]
    And they took their journey from Succoth, and encamped in Etham, *in the edge of the wilderness*
    And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; *to go by day and night*
    He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.
    {Exodus 13:20-22}
    ...
    And it was told the king of Egypt that the people fled: and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned against the people, and they said, Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us?
    (More then likely Pharaoh had spies following the mixed multitude, and when they continued after three days into the wilderness, and they did not stop to make offerings of sacrifice to God, the spies returned to Pharaoh with this news.)
    And *he made ready his chariot* and took his people with him:
    And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over every one of them.
    {Exodus 14:5-6}
    (The logistics for this would have not been completed in a day.)
    Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of *Midian* and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.
    {Exodus 3:1}
    ...
    And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: *When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt ye shall serve God upon this mountain*
    {Exodus 3:12}
    And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
    Speak unto the children of Israel, that they turn and encamp before Pihahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, over against Baalzephon: *before it shall ye encamp by the sea*
    For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, They are entangled in the land, *the wilderness hath shut them in*
    And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, *that he shall follow after them* and I will be honoured upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host; that the Egyptians may know that I am the LORD. And they did so.
    {Exodus 14:1-4}
    -- Here we have proof that Pharaoh and his army did not follow the Exodus out of Egypt before he thought that they had trapped themselves in the wilderness be for the Red Sea and the wilderness.
    -- Existential evidence from a pure military and security standpoint. God would not have lead Moses and the Exodus to the Sinai Peninsula in such close proximity to the danger of Egypt.
