    Honda introduced the first generation of HondaLink with app integration in the redesigned Honda Accord but this isn't that system. For the Next Generation HondaLink system the engineers went back to the drawing board to improve the integration between your smartphone and the car with smartphone driven apps rather than simply integration. Found in the new 2015 Honda Fit and the 2015 Honda Civic, this car stereo features a 7-inch touchscreen interface and the ability to have navigation software and other services run on your phone and delivered to the in-dash LCD via an HDMI cable. Join me as I take a deep dive.

    Jim, it doesn't display speed limits in the current version.

    As usual, another great review and explanation by Alex. Thank you so much for this. You do and excellent presentation.
    My friendly Honda Dealer wanted to charge me over $100.00 for the HDMI/USB/Apple Thunderbolt dongle. But he was cool enough to tell me to just order the same dongle from Best Buy for only $60.00 - which I did, and it ought to be here tomorrow. So if I can get over the thought of getting hosed $60.00 for a connecter that ought to be $5.00, I'm think I'm going to be alright. But it is a good deal because the cord I just ordered from Best Buy and the HondaLink App should get me a full-on Nav system for only $120.00. Not bad.
    One question Alex:
    My Garmin GPS in my other car displays the designated SPEED LIMITS on all the roads. Man that is so handy. The Garmin will even indicates if I am speeding. Will this Honda Link App post the speed limits on the screen like my Garmin does?

    Alex, a video on Siri Eyes Free would be great. Most newer Hondas have the feature, and it's easier to use than the factory voice setup to access an iOS device.

    I really don't understand the advantages of HondaLink - why not just use the google app on your phone? At least then you can also make calls etc.
    I have an android, so very disappointed that I don't have the option to use this app - as I purchased the HR-V-TiS for work, (and my job requires a lot of driving in the city).
    Is it possible to upgrade the unit in the 2015 model to have integrated/built in Sat Nav?

    As others have pointed out, you buy the adaptor from Best Buy, Amazon, etc. You'll still need an HDMI cable, but can save a few bucks and it should work exactly the same as long as you buy the Apple Lightning to HDMI adaptor. My local dealer wants $150 vs. $99 online from Honda! I'll be picking up my new 2015 EXL and hope to try this out. I'm still wondering if the HDMI connection is only needed for nav, or is there's other functionality there. $60 for the app, with little in the way of reviews or feedback seems like a gamble I'd rather not take. I use nav very little, but like my tech. Thanks Alex

    What happens if you get a phone call when the Navigation is running? Will the map guidance continue or will it stop?

    How is the Honda link navigation system looks better and is more featured than the standard built in navigation system?

    Can the navi be used with or without a phone? does the infotainment system support Android or do you need to use an I phone to access all of the display features. can you make calls off an Android phone if its connected though Bluetooth, voice search etc?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 років тому

      If you get the model with integrated nav, then it can be used without a phone. The other models require an iPhone with iOS 7 (8 is not yet supported) and the proper cables. The rest of the Bluetooth features for calling work with IOS or Android phones.

    +alexonautos ...Good video and a bit sad to hear that it sounds like the Cr-V will not have an updated entertainment system.
    Do you have an approximate guess at the release date for the refreshed Cr-V?
    Also, in your opinion, do you think the refresh will include the accord gas direct inject engine with CVT ?

      According to what I have seen it will arrive in September and get the EarthDreams 2.4 and a CVT.

    Hello there,
    I am interested in Honda Civic 2015 EX . Regarding the navigation system, do I need to download the map through iPhone 5?
    What is the difference between navigation and Honda Link navigation ?
    Thanks

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 років тому

      You would need to buy and download the app from Apple in order to use it. The built-in navigation is a little better integrated and switching from media or radio to the navigation and vice-versa is much better than with the iPhone App. The IPhone won't do much else when it is displaying the navigation information. It will also consume some data on your smartphone plan and you need to be in cell range for it to work.

      Thanks for your reply.
      I found Honda Link Navigation in App Store. It costs $69.99. So that means I have to download the app to use Honda Link Navigation right ? So the navigation on the screen means the shortcut to Honda Link Navigation correct ?
      Thanks for your assistance

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 років тому

      Ruizhi Liu There are two separate things. You can get the display audio system with or without built-in navigation. Both of those systems can ALSO use the iPhone based nav system but the top end one would give you the ability to choose.

    Good Review ! so if i'm hearing you right Apple CarPlay will be available on the 2015 Fit as stated , no other hardware needed.
    Just iOS 8.0 update in sept . and it will work ? Is the Accord Hybrid system the same , Using Honda Link ?
    Thanks
    Joe

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 років тому +1

      From what I am told, no. There will need to be some sort of change to the system although Honda has not said what that is, or if it will be available to older cars. The Accord uses "HondaLink" and the Fit/Civic use "HondaLink Next Generation" which doesn't actually appear to be related.

    So how are these infotainment options updated? My current car is 16 years old, and when I get a new car I intend to keep it just as long. The infotainment won't last that long. (I'd be surprised if the tech in 3 years is compatible with it!) So how does one update it?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 років тому

      With this system it is my understanding that the dealer would update the software. However unlike some of the more advanced (expensive) systems, I don't believe there will be functionality updates , only fixes to problems that are discovered later.

    Thanks for this video! It looks like the best phone to have with this system is a new iPhone then, isn't it? I'd appreciate yours and anyone else's thoughts about this! I need a new phone badly and am an Android person. The Samsung Galaxy S6 looks incredible but I just bought the EX version of this car which doesn't have the Nav built in. I'd love if google maps would just project and work on the car screen from my phone, but that doesn't seem to be an option. So, I'd want to use the Honda Link Connect Nav...whiiiiich doesn't work with Android, which is very perplexing. So I'm looking at prob getting the new iPhone 6 instead of waiting for the Galaxy S6 just so it plays the most nicely with the car. But, let me know if I'm missing anything!

    The requirement for live data feed for Nav stinks and completely unnecessary. And what if you drive in areas with data deadspots or areas without service? I guess you'll get a system error and left with nothing but frustration?
