Well worth the trip to Florida. I had taken my car to 5 different shops up here in Nashville before Ray was able to fix it in a couple days and it was sooo nice to be able to use cruise on the way home. And there is still more to tell if he chooses to do so. Thanks again Ray and Lauren!
Thanks for the visit Beth! 😊
Clearly worth the drive! Crazy that FIVE shops couldn't figure this one out...
I suspect your ABS light issues might now be gone too, with the same fix. Will have to watch and see!
I can honestly say I'm glad she went to Florida and let Ray have a crack. Not only was it an affordable repair but I felt her drive home was much safer and she's driving a much better car for it :). Thanks for making sure the safety issues you found got taken care of, Ray. Hopefully this video does well for you and you can make some more from UA-cam. :)
We ALL wish that Ray did business where we live. 😪
5 shops couldn't figure out it was the clockspring...... holy crap
Ray, it would be worth your while hanging onto the old connectors from the clock spring. . You'll find them handy one day😉
Top Tip folks.
If you're messing about with airbags/clock springs at home, always disconnect the battery.
It won't set a code and it removes the risk of the airbag exploding in your face.
That would suck and be expensive.
And just think in addition how much a new airbag would cost as well. 😂
Id be more worried about the er bill
@@sambarton202 That assumes you make it to ER to have a bill. An airbag in the face at closer quarters than designed is lethal. They're not some gentle ballon but a 200-300mph kick in the schnozz (This is also why kids shouldn't be in front seats. Airbags are designed for adults and can quite easily break a child's neck or detach their brainstem with the force they impart)
"always disconnect the battery." but Ray didn't, if its good for Ray. it's good for me.
16:25 red sharpie marker to the splines and steering wheel for reference.
It's always recommended to remove the power from the airbag module by removing the fuse as to prevent any unwanted deployment when working on the supplemental restraint system
I've made that mistake, regrettably. Tried to shortcut by not doing so and it came back to really bite me in the arse.....Never shortcut it again. You live and you learn. 🤷🏽♂️
The safety pin on the klokkspring is not too be removed before the steering wheel is putt on for safety of turning the klokkspring one turn off.
I removed many airbags for whatever reasons but I’ve never removed one without pulling fuses and let the Vehicle go into sleep mode. That was really scary watching you just pull all that stuff apart like that I’ve never seen that before kind of freaked me out a little. I’m glad it all worked out you’re the best. Great video.
Yes thank you! I was watching him and thinking, "OMG the capacitors are still charged". Then he set it on the dash IN front of him.
ikr!!
wish we had more mechanics like you around here. would love to see my car get worked on professionally like this.
Why not just learn....
The ABS error was related to the ESP actually because the car was not aware of the steering wheel position because of the faulty clockspring.
This man knows! 😊
Nice!
Ford has similar set up with angle sensor on some of their vehicles. Faults can occur with alignments and a scan tool can reset it, if there is no fault with the module
That's true, but only if the clock spring has an integrated steering angel sensor. Not all of them do.
That was quite a revelation for me. Never seen a clock spring or an airbag removal. Cool diagnosis too. Many thanks for the education.
Watching you troubleshoot things over the years has really helped me out. Take away the emotional side of it and just focus on the problem makes it so much easier to figure out what is going wrong
Probably already stated but it's always recommended to disconnect the battery when playing with airbags. Prevents accidental discharge. Also, the ABS problem was likely linked to the airbag issue - at least it was in my truck.
i also watch "Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics" and as soon as you said airbag and cruise control i automaticly thought clock spring.... 👍
I envisioned something totally different for a clock spring...I'm glad there was no fighting involved.
This is my favorite kind of Rainman Ray video. The diagnostic process you run through is very educational. 👍👍👏👏
For those interested, you can test each rib in the clock spring to verify resistance or open. As a rule inspection will usually show where the issue is.
there is some air bag simulator that are very cheap... they work for every restraints systems( seat belt, knee air bag and so on )
You mean "For those intressted"
I've always been impressed with your videos Ray, but this one takes the cake. The way you approach a diag and apply your incredible knowledge and skills just blows me away. And when you throw in the entertainment factor with your great sense of humor, it all makes the whole experience so enjoyable to watch. Thank you for all you do.
Love the channel and the videos. One thing, I worked in airbag assembly for 15 years. The double connectors allow for limited or full deployment of the airbag depending on the severity of the crash and occupant position. Yes, when you remove the connectors the pins in the airbag inflator are shunted or shorted so an inadvertent application of electricity won't deploy the airbag. Technically it is best to remove power to the system before messing with them.
This is serendipitous. Just three days ago the airbag light on my 2013 Kia Rio came on. The next day the cruise controls stopped working. I thought, "clockspring", I already replaced the cruise control switch module. Lots of warnings about needing "special tools" (I think they mean the puller 🤣).
Hyundai is extending the warranty coverage for the driver’s front airbag clock spring assembly on certain 2011-2014 Elantra vehicles, 2011-2013 Sonata vehicles, and 2011-2014 Sonata Hybrid vehicles to 15 years, unlimited mileage, from the date of original retail delivery or date of first use.
Good luck getting the scummy dealers to honor both the labor and parts cost for that.
You get up before I go to bed. Have yourself a good day.
Nightshift here! I anticipate Rays Vids!!
I'm sure Ray 'sets' the new videos to be released at a certain time the next morning (UA-cam creator feature) at 6am? Once he finishes his editing the night prior. 😊
I really admire your diagnostic and root cause analysis skills. Great work!
Glad your back in full capacity, I was lonely not seeing your daily adventures.
Good morning from Germany,
in many German Cars the ABS Modul gets the Steeringangle Signal from the steeringwheel. Just to know about the Wheelspeeddifference in Curves.
Maybe this was the ABS Issue here. And when the Car goes straight the Error will delete him self or whill not be saves permanetly.
Sorry for my poor spelling.
An allway... : Thank you for your Videos
You are correct sir as this is the case in almost all modern vehicles. 😊
I had this replaced on my 2011 sonata a few years ago. There is a TSB on the clock spring.
At the start of the video I knew exactly what the problems was. My clock spring went out on my 2013 Hyundai Sonata, had the same trouble indicator. Nice to see what it takes to replace the clock spring.
What most drivers and even technicians don’t realize is that these clock springs wear out due to age/wear and tear. The only solution is to replace them. Great diagnosis Rainman!
maybe they wouldn't realize this if they had never worked as a tech for KIA or Hyundai in the early to mid 2000s. This was a very common problem even with brand new units. it seemed like someone was always busy replacing one at any given time in the shop. Looks like it was still a problem even in the 2012 models.
@@douglaspage2398All cars that have an airbag in the steering wheel have clock springs.
@@AT-wl9yq Ya think? however, all cars do not have clock springs made in a third world country with the cheapest materials possible.
Try not to be a moron.
😂😂 Ray has had A LOT of coffee this morning... he's in speed mode.
Perfect timing Ray, it's Sunday night in Australia, just time enough to watch this before going to bed. Hope you all have a great time at SEMA!
It popped at 5 am in Chicago.
Now its Sunday Night in Germany. Watch it now...😁🤗
very cool.... would not have suspected or tested that unit.... learned something new today!!!! thank you... end of trans mission... end of morning coffee...
I do believe this is the first time I've seen a video on this from you or anyone else. Very valuable 👌🏼.
The brakes are still doing amazing months later as well. You're the best Ray! Thanks!
Thanks for showing the procedure for diagnosis of the clock spring device on a current model auto. Not as complicated as some older versions ( and less of a headache to check and repair ! ) carry on smartly !
For non mechanics like me it's good to watch your videos and the explanation of how things work. I can do brake pad changes, changing oil and oil filter, change the belt and a few more things. But this is a whole new level of work that most mechanics don't like to share or explain. Thank you, Ray. Have yourself a great day.
It's nice to know what it really takes to do a job I'm not familiar with. Being a woman and constantly being BS'ed about a problem or the book time it takes, even though I have both OEM knowledge from both GM and Ford.
And I generally ask to speak to the actual mechanic rather than the SM who doesn't know d...
Definitely should have disconnected the battery before messing with the airbag wiring. I know that also resets all the system monitors and you have to drive the car through several parameters to get all the monitors to run again but that's a minor inconvenience and could save you from a very nasty and dangerous accidental airbag deployment. Always put safety first.
Very interesting. Never understood how the steering wheel connection worked.
I think the cruise control and abs thing was due to the airbag. some cars not all but a decent number of new cars, when theres a fault with some safety systems they disable certain other systems for "safety" or to bring the urgency to your attention more
Yes, when a safety systems is down the car wont allow cruise to set, for even more safety.
Yes, My Subaru disables the Cruise and Traction (?) as an attention getter.
That was brilliant. Great instinctive diagnosis and yes, I learnt a lot watching this today. But being old school, I can't bear to see ignitions left on, once a upon a time doing that would burn out your ignition coil if the points were closed. I know its ok now though.
I suffer from the same ignition condition. Lol
@@TheHansoost Glad I'm not the only one hehe.
Nice video Ray.... I was thinking clock spring when you first described the faults. It's the only component common to both systems. Auto makers took great strides to keep the airbag system separate from the rest of the cars electric system, including grounds. This is why SRS connectors are yellow. Also, there are shorting bars in almost every SRS connector in a path including the airbag itself. As long as an SRS connector is unmated, the shorting bars are connected. The shorting bars keep the airbag from deploying if there is a break in the electrical system by keeping both terminals at the same potential. you would have needed to disconnect the shorting bars at the male end of the clock spring to get the resistance from a single ribbon cable wire.
That was my reaction as soon as I saw the word Hyundai. I used to be a tech at a Kia dealership. this is a very common problem with both makes even on brand new and low mileage units. Before I retired it was so common that you would always see someone in the shop replacing one, or were doing so yourself. Looks like they hadn't improved much by 2012.
I appreciate your comment that you had a good diagnostic idea while you were sitting in traffic, "doing nothing ". The brain needs free time to process data. This is counterintuitive to the popular management concept of "100% efficiency." When you have no time to stop and think, you make an inordinate number of silly mistakes. This does not increase efficiency!
Entertainment and educational values both 10/10 .
Great diagnosis of the two linked problems; may even have been part of the ABS error. I wish you'd put that airbag outside of the car while you were working though...
ABS fault link? Does the system read the steering wheel angle/rotation to make allowance for the wheel speed differential during a turn? If so, doesn't that signal go down the clock spring too?
I DROVE my 4spd auto 2000 Hyundai Elantra Wagon to the metal yard, with 348,000 on it! The rear wheel strut mount rusted out and came into the rear passenger compartment. IT STILL RAN GREAT!
@@adriannicol8529 Angle sensors usually live further down the steering column (normally just in front/behind of the column stalks) - and you should be careful when playing in this area as there is a usually a collapsible rivet for crashes which will pivot the stalks away from the driver (ie, don't whack the assembly)
and always facing upright so it doesnt become a projectile
I really like these videos. I find myself touching parts on my truck as you explain it. Like the unlock tabs for the airbag. Great job brother
Its amazing how the correct tool can turn a nightmare of a job into a simple one. I had to replace the clock spring on my daughters honda jazz, I didnt have a steering wheel puller and no amount of grunting would get the blasted thing off. Eventually, I had to use a couple of fence posts acting as levers.
beware of the 'nut' behind the steering wheel.
🤣 As a former IT worker we were always concerned with the loose nut on the keyboard.
As the Borg once said “resistance is futile”😎
The air bag has a two stage deployment that's why there is two circuits. One is the primary deployment circuit charge the other is secondary not a redundant. It's there to keep the bag inflated longer if needed depending on deltaV and milliseconds of crash time detected by the ACM.
he never studied the design first, just I believe...
More great knowledge 😊
@@mickdee6590here is some more. Hyundai ACMs only record up to two events. As deployment or nondeployment. Nondeployments are temporarily stored and can be over written by a subsequent event. Deployments can not be over written so only two can be stored. After two deployments the ACM must be switched for a new one. Which means this vehicle's ACM has either two nondeployments or a single deployment and a nondeployment stored. Record threshold is 5mph minimum delta V with a .5mph delta V over 20msec for time zero of event.
What physically happens to fire the airbag ? Does a connection break during the accident to complete the electrical circuit or what?
@@sparksalot4950 the ACM detects a a rapid change in velocity via accelerometers in the module and detects crush sensors if the vehicle is so equipped. Vehicle data and accelerometer data is buffered in the module. When it senses the event the ACM activates an algorithm which analyzes what's buffered and still coming in. The algorithm makes a command decision based on thresholds over time. It then triggers charges when it determines the crash is severe enough. This happens in about 50 msecs. Not every crash is severe enough for airbags and other things such as headrest extenders and seatbelt tensioner may be commanded in a non deployment.
Ray you should have checked the resistance values of the new component to compare values with the old before installing.
Common steering wheel button loss and horn or airbag usually is the clock spring. I had to replace mine at 150k
You need to pull that steering wheel the old school way. Remove the nut, jam your knees under the bottom then yank on the top. Bout knocked myself out about 40 years ago when the wheel popped off and hit me in the forehead. Lol, learned a valuable lesson that day.
I know with Chrysler, if you have any sort of warnings for the drive train the cruise kicks off and will not function until the fault is fixed.
I was gonna say the same about Subarus, they'll disable cruise if there are certain ECM/TCM codes (not all), ABS codes, TCS codes, and SRS codes...
Tho i just assume its easier to think if any dash warning is on, cruise will just be disabled...at least subarus will blink the cruise control light to indicate that the system is disabled/malfunctioning
Excellent diag and repair. I remember back in the early 2000's that working on an airbag system was almost akin to playing Russian roulette.
I bought my kid a Hyundai back when they were new to the market and the damn thing still runs today. Can’t drive it because the body is rotted out but it still starts and runs.
Really enjoy the troubleshooting videos lately, great to watch
Good Mornin' Ray.🔧🛠
Ray , I was doing the same repair to my wife's Hyundai I20 on Saturday so was amused when this video popped up. Here in the UK the hardest bit was sourcing the correct part . The i20 also has a steering angle sensor mounted on the clock spring thankfully that unclipped and transferred across
you made my brain CLICK by opening that clock spring. Thanks!
Nice job figuring out it was one issue for the two issues! Than you for showing us diverse things.
oooooooo look at the charger!!! good morning, Ray
Well done Ray ! Amazing diagnosis and repair !
Thanks for the tip about the shorting connectors on the back of the air bag!
Again another feather in your talent hat . It was genius to conclude the problem with the cruise control and airbag issues had a common link. I would have had to work for that it would have never been like oh these two things have something in common. mine blowing.
I have been driving my 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis for over three years with the passenger side airbag removed. My blend door actuator failed, and the only way to replace it is to remove most of the dash, which I had no desire to do. It was stuck in full heat mode. I live in Phoenix, AZ, where we really have no need for heat. But we do have to have A/C. So I was able to remove the passenger airbag and about a 20" piece of ductwork, and with a 2 foot long chisel made out of a piece of rebar, reach back in through the airbag opening, and break the mounting tabs off the broken actuator, and move it out of the way. Then I was able to jam the blend door in the A/C position. I never did put the airbag back in, so that light has been on ever since. About the only person who ever rides in the front passenger seat is my youngest daughter (age 32) and she wears glasses. I really don't want her hit in the face with an airbag. Seatbelts will hold you in place in a crash. Airbags have always been a stupid idea.
Very good diagnostic skills. Just goes to show how much can be accomplished by taking the time to do a thorough diagnostic check.
Screw + bolt = scrolt, your welcome. My neighbor has a Hyundai Sonata so seeing this was like a "what a coincidence" moment. I love learning more, keep up the great work Ray!
I remember having a similar problem with my old chevy lumina - the cruise control would not work on a cross-mountain trip. My car would suddenly slow down whenever I put the turn signal on to change lanes. Back then it was a plastic ring with embedded copper connections. No airbag on that car that I remember. Yhey replaced the ring and all was good.
As soon as you mentioned the miles my first instinct was clock spring great video
Nice when things go right. Have a fantastic day.
Awesome diagnosis and repair! Thoroughly enjoyed this video!!
Another great diagnosis and fix. Just as a gee-whiz, "0L" on DMM stands for "overload".
Clock springs have been a recall on Hyundai vehicles for a while. Seems like there was some sort of brake system recall also.
I bought a 1991 Hyndai Scoupe SE in August 1991. By March 1994 it had its little 1.5L engine replaced 3 times under Warrenty. All 3 engines had to have its thermostat replaced every 4-7 thousand miles ??!!?? In March, I had just gotten out of the Navy and followed Pink Floyd across the country in the spring and summer of 1994. In December of 1994 at 124,000 miles it burnt to a crisp when a fuel line let go under the hood. I swore right them in there that I would never own another Hyundai. And I never have.
I have the 2012 Hyundai Azera Limited with 95K miles on it. Zero issues. I adore this car.
Sometimes the cable that goes to the throttle can come off or in my case the mechanic put it on but didn't snap it in place. Glad I looked. Whoever invented cruise control is a genius 😊
Everyone of your. Videos are educational, and I have learned a lot from them . Thank you
Happy Sunday Ray. This will be an interesting video.
Another life saved. Great job as always.
clock spring. cool. I wondered how that worked. Thanks Ray.
Cool i was thinking the exact same thing on the bridge, my thoughts went straight to the clock spring for both faults.
Thanks for the video I have a problem with my 2014 Santa Fe volume controls on the steering wheel. Way more comfortable doing the repair myself now having watching your video.
Very impressive work
200K on a Hyundai. That’s impressive.
Everyone makes a mistake.
Yep American vehicles are made so much better 🤣🤣😂😂
My 2012 i40 has 260k on it with no major issues since new. The ones with the older Nu engines are very reliable.
I understand your comment. Everyone says Kias and Hyundais are such crap. I bought my first one as a cheap sacrificial car to drive 800+ miles a week for work. But now, I've had 5 Kias and a Hyundai and got well over 150k trouble free miles on all of them. I can't say that about any other make of car. That's why I keep buying them. I've been buying cars for 55 years. Thanks.
It hasn’t been stolen. 😂
Love your videos and watch them daily! You're an amazing technician! One tiny educational thing. An autopsy is what is performed when it's the same species- thus, we can only perform an autopsy on another human. In this case, you're performing a necropsy. That is, unless you are really a robot...
Tip: before removing a Clock Spring, mark and tape the center shaft to the it's body. That should prevent you from having to re calibrate the clock spring to the steering angle sensor.
Great video Ray. Very educational. Stay safe ❤
Changed the clockspring on my Santa Fé and I had really big respect for the airbag knowing it got same explosive power of a grenade! 😅
two issues with one wire ribbon! very interesting how you determined where the issue was
I thought you needed to disconnect the battery when working on air bags. that was neat!
MY 94 Bronco had two bad clock springs. I always disconnect the battery and short the positive and negative together first before removing. Also don't play with the new one as it is factory set in the middle. If it gets out of position it will break when you go around a corner. 😑 Some have a pin to pull once installed.
I had a Hyundai Scope that my landlord had illegally towed away and it had 247,372 miles on it. Couldn't afford to reclaim it. California is notorious for outrageous impound fees (it was registered non op due to work being done. Computer, brakes and fuel pump)
Amazing diagnostic effort.
Back when I word at a Chrysler dealership if I had a code for high airbag resistance I found that a noid light worked perfectly to test the airbag circuit before and after the clock spring to diagnose the system
Great informational video! Thanks I didn’t know about this particular system in vehicles. Now I know and knowing is half the battle! GIJOE! 😂 I’d love to see a video on replacing the passenger air bag if you have one!
2012 Toy Tacoma, I had a similar problem. At first my horn became intermittent, then roughly a year later, I found that the airbag light would not go out. But for me the cruise control worked fine.
Cost for me I think was roughly 300 from the dealer.
I wish you had tested resistance on the new part to show us what a good part shows.
Love the diag and testing of this problem. Adding to my understanding of our current vehicles. That makes them, for me, less mysterious. As the owner of a 2015 Colorado that helps my comfort with its systems. If there is repairs needed down the road it will help me understand them. Knowledge = Comfort. Thanks!
Once again you absolutely nailed the diagnosis.
Very interesting video, simple but yet very informative
I always think of the clock spring in an automotive steering wheel like the timers on a home washer or dryer.
Working around air bags makes me nervous. I like how you showed how to get into the steering system and what the connectors do. Kewl stuff.
The AirBag has two igniters and two connections for 2-stage operation, not for redundancy. Depending on the crash sensor data full speed or half speed deployment mode can be triggered. In the half speed mode igniters triggered sequentally, with a fraction of second delay between them. The AirBag inflates slower that reduces potential AirBag induced driver injuries. Half speed deployment triggered when relatively low crash deacceleration detected.
Hyundai is actually pronounced like "Sunday" (Hunday) at least that is what the dealer told me. Love your work. Thank you for sharing.
Well, they started putting out ads in the UK a few months back which were all about how to pronounce their name: and the "yu" bit is definitely almost like a "you" as in "Hyounday"
