As someone born and raised in West by god Virginia, I can confirm that Mothman deserves his own video
I kinda want to hear more about this Mothman fellow.
We need an entire WV cryptid series. We have so many! 😂
@@derekholt6522 it’s an amazing cryptid, I highly suggest you look for videos and stories about him!
The states telling campfire stories about famous cryptids, haunts, and ghost stories of their area should be it's own series
As someone from Kentucky who knows folks from West By God Virginia, yeah, Mothman deserves his own video.
Plus, I need to come to the Mothman festival. And visit the Trans-Allegheny.
Need to mention this. This year is the 100 year anniversary of the battle of Blair Mountain. RIP to those Coal miners from Yorkshire the coal capital of the UK
RIP indeed, but the Black Country is the uk coal capital. Literally where the name comes from.
@@TheAnnaShowUk all need is a Welsh man then we can have a coal war. Btw people who dk the black country is a region in the UK near Birmingham lol
Solidarity with the workers then, solidarity with the workers now
I lived in Wales as well, I can argue both side of that one lol.
But we can all at least agree Thatcher was a witch and our mining communities will never forget -.-
This is still why the people of West Virginia aren't too fond of the federal government over here.
As a West Virginian, I am both stunned and impressed at how accurate that portrayal of a West Virginian is.
As a native West Virginian, this is an amazing explanation of West by god Virginia.
i expected something else. idk what, but it definitely wasnt this. weird that i actually felt a lil pride in the state for once
Im from Appalachia ohio with lots of family from West Virginia and that cousin lovin really do be a real thing..

Nah I’m from MA and i wanna go and I’ve been to West Virginia
As a Floridian West Virginia was pretty awesome.
Same here from a native Floridian....I kinda want to visit now....

Ayyyyyy my fellow Golden Horseshoe winners! Congrats everyone
Surprised VT didn’t pop in when WV mentioned the Maple Syrup thing.
I'm still disappointed Canada hasn't popped up in dark glasses and a hat handing over maple syrup covertly as their dealer
To be honest, I don't think they could understand what he was talking about.
I thought that too
I was going to say the same thing
Right?! They might fight about the syrup but get along on the lowlander/flatlander stuff
I could watch West Virginia videos for well over an hour.
In October, the kids will block the roads with trees, burning couches, and other debris to get days off from school. They celebrate Halloween all month long in the hills.
There's a lovely restaurant I went to called "Hill Billy Hotdogs". Half the restaurant's seating is in a school bus on blocks. They serve a 3-pound hotdog called "the home wrecker" and 5 or 10 pound hamburgers called the "single wide" and "double wide", respectively. The booths in the restaurant are made out of stuff like bathtubs cut in half. They give you markers to sign your name on the wall.
If I had to describe the culture of the Appalachian region briefly, I'd tell you that it's like they took a bottled piece of the 50's and dropped a drug war in it, and then tossed in a bunch of coal miners and home steaders. They're really down to earth people.
To fully imitate the accent, you take your general country accent, scrub the Texas twang and Southern sophistication out if it, and enunciate as little as possible while still being understandable. So you did it pretty darn well.
I love the landscape of the hills. You've got flower-filled valleys, clouds that touch the hill tops, fall colors, great snow, frog season (mix the chirps of crickets and birds at night), the slow roll of trains on tracks, long dirt roads, and banjo music in the distance... uh oh.
On the other hand you've got people that hang possum skulls at the entrance of their neighborhood, toilet flower pots, cars on blocks, moonshine stills, dog fighting, and so many drugs. People in Florida refer to hill people as "pill billies". I spent a year in the hills going door to door, and I saw some amazing stuff. They're either deeply self-sufficient or deeply in welfare, and almost every one of them would give you the shirt off their back... Just don't try to force it.
They're like a quieter, friendlier Florida man that'll bury you in the backyard after you've messed with them. They say "don't mess with Texas", but I'd tell you to never go stir up the hill folk. You're already lost in their maze, and you'll never escape their labyrinth. Here's some notable examples. The British lost the fight for the southern states when they woke up the swarm of sharpshooter trappers that were minding their own business in the hills, who proceeded to snipe their leaders one by one. The battle of Blair mountain had the government call out the army and airforce to fight (and lose to) a bunch of miners with rifles.
As a native of WV…kudos
@@richmoneybrax, thanks, man. I remember learning that one county in the hills let the people name the roads and areas where they live. So they had roads named "Star Wars Lane" and "Pokémon Road", and towns like the town of "Rowdy" next to the town of "Dwarf" (it reads really well on the freeway sign). I remember "Happy" being next to "Defiance", and "Bonnyman" next to "Typo". I got a picture next to the Pentecostal Church of Krypton posing like Superman.
Bro, as a Florida man, I am impressed. What a comment.
I’m from Western Kentucky. West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky share the same traits when it comes to Appalachia. Nicest folks ever, but don’t you dare mess with them, because ain’t nobody gonna find you.
Then type
Critter bug and the barrel
That gets to a real couple WV boys videos on UA-cam
As a West Virginian, I would give this a million thumbs up if I could.
I want to give you a thumbs up but ur at 69 so...
As a West Virginiaian, I’m kinda shocked by the accuracy of this video.
The research that went into it was pretty impressive, accent not too far off for some of us, and the Out Wayne reference was solid. Well done.
The out Wayne reference blew me away. I thought that was only something us in CabellALingo knew about
I love this one. West Virginia always gets crapped on but I think it’s history is fascinating…and I’m from Utah.
We also have a giant ass radio telescope that makes most cell phone towers illegal to make without clearing it with the telescope people first and in the town of the telescope you can me arrested/fined if your WiFi router or mircrowave makes to much interference
I have lived in WV my whole life. If you're an outdoorsy person that also enjoys courteous and kind people, then come to WV! Also, our economy is not great, so vacations are comparatively cheap!
SIDE NOTE: Green Bank is such a neat place.
@@jevans3375 ahh, always prepared to disconnect from the world when going to Green Banks
@@jevans3375 my boyfriend has a camp at Cass, and you’re not kidding! No Internet or cell phones, that’s why there’s so teenagers near Greenbank! 😂
Born and raised in West Virginia and I honestly love it here not too much goes on, mostly quiet little towns and lots of nature. It’s beautiful to just go outside look up to see all the hills and valleys. Especially in the fall it’s soooo pretty! Come by whenever you would like, I can promise that you would be probably welcomed depending where you go :)
"What's a mountain?" So subtle yet so perfect
My favorite part of florida is all the signs up any time there's the slightest elevation in the road: "hills block view" as if that wasn't obvious...
Heard "Country Roads" and came running.
West Virginia IS the BEST Virginia, hands down. Came here just to say this.
Congrats, this video just made it into my West Virginia History class.
Carry on.
Maine really needs to be invited to the Table. After all, it's not every state that gets their lobsters high before cooking them.
I just Googled this.... holy crap, I need to go on a road trip...
@Ben you need to do MAINE!
Wait what???? Heading to google
Mainer here just about the most Mainer thing is lobster, Moxie soda, And woopie pies.
@@Cardry89423 My niece is spending the summer with my mother. She's from out in Nevada. For supper the first night she was here; she wanted lobster, steamed clams Humpty Dumpty chips, and Moxie.
This might be the best welcome to the table introduction yet. I could watch Florida fall in love with WVa for hours
As a West Virginian I can confirm that if you sing country roads it is in our blood to sing along with you.
Oh God, we’re Florida without the beaches.
And alligators :]
I love how Ben doesn't even need to act for his part, he was actually SO annoyed when he was on Tik Tok live gathering facts for West Virginia and people kept mentioning the dumb stereotype. Florida's rhyme tho was amazing, as well as West Virginia flipping everyone off. (That's gonna be fun for the discord lmao.)
The flip off is actually a physical representation of the outline of the state
What did Maryland mean when he said I think he was talking about me
@@contearah the song was written while driving on a road in Montgomery Co, Maryland. I can’t remember if it was in Rockville or Gaithersburg, but that general vicinity.

I'm from WV and I use my left hand sometimes to give general directions but I say before I do it "I'm not going to flip you off. The state is ruffly this shape." It actually helps in a pinch.
As someone who knows too much about John Denver, he was born Henry John Deutschendorf, but loved Colorado so much that when he chose a stage name, he decided on the capital of his favorite state.
As a native West Virginian who has been living in Florida for the past 20 years, this was amazing! It is so accurate. Maybe I’ll get to go back and visit soon, Lord willin’ and the creek don’t rise. 😆
Can’t wait to show this to MY Mountain Momma! She has a little music box that plays “Take Me Home, Country Roads” and that song will always remind me of her!

Coming from a whole network of geeks in West Virginia we love this video and thought you did a fantastic job. There’s so many incorrect stereotypes and so much more to do here that a lot of people disregard. And yes moth man needs a video!
As a Western Virginian I loved how you called out West Virginia's clam to Shenandoah River and Blue Ridge Mountains Claim. I live with in 10 miles of both the river and mountains.
The problem when you write a song about geographic locations that cross state lines and only namedrop one state. Both are gorgeous.
To be fair, both run through WV, but mostly in VA. Us WVians still own the song however. Sorry. (I'm a WVian and live in Northern VA now)
No way me too. And I actually live in WV....
HEY HEY HEY, BUDDY! That is JOHN DENVER'S claim. Don't put that on West Virginians, who already have so very few popular songs in which we are positively mentioned.

Anyone else love when Ben puts himself in his skits out of the blue? I do that's for sure
The argument about which state Country Roads comes from is real. And there's always time to talk about Mothman.
That's an argument for the estate of John Denver, not the good people of WV.
ALSO: Have you ever seen that news clip of all the black folk that claim to see a leprechaun in the trees of their neighborhood? The Mothman story is EXACTLY like the leprechaun story.

Virginians who make this claim remind me of people who claim Trump won the election or that the civil war wasn’t about slavery. I love my copium-addicted countrymen.
As a native of southwest Pa, I must say that this was terrifyingly accurate for our friends five minutes south. Funny thing is that cuz most of us see folk on day trips from there(and visit ourselves) a lot of that is super familiar. (Ramps dusted in sea salt and pepper sauce are fantastic!)

Didn’t even mention West Virginia being one of three states where you can own a kangaroo without a permit
Not true. They changed the laws for owning exotic animals a few years ago and really tightened down on what's allowed. Now you need permits, have to be registered with the state as an animal sanctuary/zoo (which has its own host of eligibility requirements) before you can even apply for those permits, and pay a bunch of licensing fees. And you're not allowed, at all, to keep any native wildlife as a pet.
@@jenipherocious this is definitely not true. My cousin Jim Bob and his wife Tracy, my cousin, own a kangaroo farm up on moonshine Mountain
