My Initial Thoughts on the DLC Announcements from Dovetail Direct ~ Train Sim World 4

  • Here's me discussing some of the add-ons that have just been announced for Train Sim World 4 (trust Dovetail to continue announcing loads of new content instead of fixing problems that still spoil existing add-ons). Some of these are good, middle-of-the-road or so bad that I was going 'what are these developers thinking?' to myself.
The upcoming add-ons discussed in this video are as follows:
London Overground - Gospel Oak to Barking Riverside (by DTG)
Metrolink - Los Angeles to San Bernardino (by DTG)
Semmeringbahn - Mürzzsuchlag to Wiener Neustadt (by DTG)
Fife Circle - Edinburgh to Markinch via Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy (by Rivet Games.....oh dear)
Tadami Line - Aizu-Wakamatsu to Tadami (by Union Workshop, and the first Japanese route in Train Sim World)

I am more excited for the Semmeringbahn because I love the scenery and the Taurus locomotive!

Thanks for getting this out so fast! A couple things i want to add, first, it looks like talent 1s do run on Semmeringbahn handling local services.
The bigger thing though is that the San Bernardino line was not meant to be the next US release. There was another US release that was going to be part of the coming release cycle. Some sharp eyed people on the discord and forums have picked up that this release was going to have something to do with LIRR. It seems to be called LIRR 2 in one of the devs’ drivers log, and there are new achievements now related to NYC. We can’t put together whether it would be a refresh of the LIRR route we already have, an extension, or a whole new line, although most think it’s one of the first two. This release has been delayed indefinitely due to licensing issues. Speculation on discord is that it’s with Kawasaki if an M9 is planned to come with it, but it could also be with MTA, which would be an issue because if mta pulled their licensing and got into beef with DTG, that also takes Metro North and any future routes in the New York area off the table.

I’m especially looking forward to the Semmeringbahn and the Japanese route as Japan in particular is a country that we needed for a while in TSW.

I just thought, what if the class 710 was layered onto the Bakerloo line for services between Queens Park and Harrow and Wealdstone. Plus, they could also, in the near future, make extensions to Euston and Watford Junction.

    My opinions:
Class 104: looks good; increases service variation on Peak Forest.
Fife Circle Line: great idea; non-linear; Forth Bridge and Class 170 overdue for game, but glad we are getting them. (Hopefully Rivet doesn't pull a Rivet on us!)
Semmaringbahn: great route idea; meh rolling stock; hopefully good LIDAR scenery.
Tadami Line: amazing idea; captures Japanese asthetic nicely (seen in preview screenshots); hopefully KiHa 40 included; want to see LIDAR scenery and Niddertalbahn quality.
I felt that all of your opinions were valid and warranted! (I am not a DTG fanboy, thankfully!)

The DB class 182 is the same as the ÖBB Taurus. ÖBB and DB just have different "numbers" for their trains (classes)

I'm a bit disappointed that there won't be a continous line for Metrolink and Cajon Pass and always you will have to go to menu. They should make a Rhein Rhur network. The Cargo line volume has potential, if they would add new locomotives.

Have you ever tried simulators like Maszyna, Simrail, ZdSimulator or Run8? In my opinion is not the lack of competition, but instead the true reality that most of the people don’t want “train simulators” but “train games”. Being dtg one of the few proposing this type of content, it’s simply a matter of monopoly on the market…

Great video! Unfortunately nothing new under the sun, as they say in Italy. It seems that DTG wants to continue the usual strategy of selling DLC as much as possible. A strategy based on quantity, rather than quality. The main purpose is not to provide the user with DLC that guarantees hours and hours of varied and challenging gameplay. The goal is to create DLC that quickly exhausts their potential so that the player feels the need to purchase new DLC. That's why the routes are short, linear, with often only one new piece of rolling stock, and a handful of scenarios. Just because they put 200 playable services in timetable mode doesn't mean they are 200 interesting services. Often they are just repetitions of boring and repetitive services, with the total absence of unexpected events. Green lights all the way. How much would it cost in terms of labor to provide 20 or 30 scenarios? If only longevity were one of DGT's goals we would have very different DLCs, with trains and liveries galore, and many scenarios. And above all we would have non-linear routes, networks, unexpected events. All things that the Poles at SimRail managed to achieve. Unfortunately SimRail is only focused on Poland for now, and this cuts out a large portion of players, but the basic game features hundreds and hundreds of km of non-linear routes, the possibility of multiplayer and traffic control, which translates into trips that are always different and unpredictable situations. Many trains and liveries complete the offer. Everything we would like to see in TSW but which I think we will never see, otherwise how would DTG sell hundreds of DLC? You wonder why we always have re-runs of old routes taken from TS: to maximize costs with benefits! why invest in creating new routes, with all the work that entails, when you have literally hundreds of routes already built, which you just need to copy and bring back into the new engine? minimum effort, maximum profit. and here is yet another German route without rhyme or reason. Sometimes a few more kilometers would be enough to create an interesting route, but no! DTG always stops earlier, instead of arriving in the big city that everyone knows, it stops in the town 30 km away, making the route meaningless, which otherwise could have been much more interesting. We rarely have a route from start to finish. Not to mention the terrible scenario editor, a practically useless thing, and the equally cumbersome livery editor. If you think about it, all the complexity of TS has been scaled down in TSW, to obtain a basically boring game, to which we constantly have to add DLC in order to get pleasure. And then the terrible stuttering certainly doesn't help. Is it really enough to blame Unreal Engine so they can not care and continue as if nothing had happened?

I really wish dtg went with the East London Line like you said instead of the GOBLIN line! But I do hope the class 710 will be layered onto the Queens Park - Harrow and Wealdstone section of the Bakerloo line, since the Class 710s that use the goblin line r dual voltage
Regarding the Fife Circle line, I am quite excited about this one as I find it quite an interesting route and hopefully we finally get a class 170

A fair overview and review. Of the offerings announced I'd be most interested in the Austrian and Japanese routes. The Japanese route will likely be the best of all announced as it's made by a better developer. Alas, I'll keep skipping all until DTG can get off their "donkeys" and fix the core game and make it run well on Xbox. Flipbook animation FPS and terrible sound implementation doesn't cut it in 2024. They've added TSW4 to GamePass as a refuge for a dwindling franchise on the platform. Perhaps TSW5 will launch on GamePass in September and I could once again see if they've bothered to fix the game or just left it as is with minor free patch worthy enhancements.

I know I'm definitely bias with my opinion on Metrolink routes and such but honestly with how the market goes with licensing for commuter rail in the United States its next to impossible. Commuter rail operations hate doing these types of partnerships (Unless you're Amtrak and regularly spend your time trying to find ways to make money) so them doing Metrolink again doesn't come as a surprise but they are doing their best to keep with branded content which I fully agree and love. Honestly though you mentioned many other American States there just isn't as much flare with them. Yeah sure, I could run a BNSF intermodal in the middle of the plains of Kansas in all double track territory but what's the fun in that when I only have to tab in every 5 minutes to check my speed, I like routes where its scenic (The San Gabriel Mountain Range which the entire San Bernardino Line follows) Fast paced (frequent stops and lots of services on the SB Timetable) and a lot of dodging other trains and getting through traffic (The San Bernardino Line frequently goes down to single track because there is no room to put more in the historic downtown areas you pass through) All I can say is that some areas of the US just work out better than others. and Metrolink pretty much has every type of terrain to cross. I like the criticism you give but when people say "They should make the UP line that goes through my town in the middle of the desert that is all double track and has a town every 100 miles!" I don't understand why anyone would ever want that. You mentioned Maine as well which would be another spend hours on hours switching cars at 15 MPH which still I dont understand why anyone would want to do that. For most people it just seems that they want the local line they live by more than the actual operations.

The Arrow not being added really is a huge blunder in my opinion as well. Those Stadler trainsets are really nice and on top of that two San Bernardino line services actually use the Arrow line with regular Metrolink equipment. Those being trains 381 and 382. They really are apart of the same line (The trackage is all one subdivision, Metrolink San Gabriel Subdivision). It would be nice to get the F59PH for sure but i’m sure if they did it would be another overpriced DLC add-on. Plus there’s only 4 that can run passenger services with a 5th one that’s stuck in yard duty because of mechanical problems.
One other thing that would be nice is if dovetail included the new Antelope Valley line schedule as part of an update. There’s now 15 services in each direction (30 total) as of last November and most are 60 minute headways. Which isn’t a ton compared to most commuter roads but compared to some other lines on the system (Looking at the Riverside line in particular) is quite nice. It would definitely improve the route more to add in the new services although a lot of them are Via Princessa terminators since the canyon part is just not high enough capacity (Yet.)
I’d recommend giving the San Bernardino line a look once it releases then decide on buying it if you’re curious. It’s a very different trip from the Antelope Valley line and has a lot shorter gaps between stations with an overall shorter trip. It’s much more urban, less scenic but a lot more like most commuter systems in that it basically just passes through developed town after town. This route might cater towards your style of play a bit more than the Antelope Valley line did.

The ÖBB 1116 and the DB 182 sound alike, because they are technically the same engine: SIEMENS developed the classes 1016/1116 for the Austrians. In SIEMENS teminology, they are called type ES64U2 EuroSprinter. The Austrians designated their 15 kV, 16,7 Hz version as Baureihe (class) 1016, whereas the dualsystem version (15 kV, 16,7 Hz and 25 kV, 50 Hz) with three pantographs is called 1116. The engine's power electronics transform the line current into three-phase AC, so the acustics with the significant scale sounds are always the same. For the Austrians, these locos are called "Taurus".
The Deutsche Bahn purchased 25 engines of the dualsystem version (15 kV, 16,7 Hz and 25 kV, 50 Hz, ÖBB 1116), but only with two pantographs and called them Baureihe 182. The nickname "Taurus" is also common for the DB variant. Some other private rail operators use them as well.

Dovetail confirmed on Twitter the American size hole in the room. The reason we didn't get to see the actual new American route that's in development is because they still have to work with the licensor on approvals and when they get that out the way we will get more info on it. It's been leaked or hinted that it's an LIRR remake or expansion.

I don't mind the US route even though i wanted a Virginia Rail express route witch operates in cities of Northern Virginia to Union Station in Washington, D.C. Only thing i find annoying about the new american route is that mp36. It's Definity going to be a reskin of the caltrain version with the same interior/sounds. I think the metrolink f59ph would have been a better choice. I just hope the Metrolink loco from antelope valley will be playable in the time tables of the new US route. Other then that, back to the reskin BS....Just look at what they did with the clinchfield F7 for example, it mocked the F7s from TSC, same ole sounds and interior..... Then they added the cajon pass Sante Fe F7 and guess what? Same ole sounds and interior from what you see in TSC and the clinchfield F7 from the clinchfield route. Also great video! I love that you're not bias and is super open minded. Cause so many are bias with games like this witch i find ridiculous.

Two LA commuter routes so close together is very annoying, especially since they both go west into the desert and won't be linked. I know they have the Metrolink licence and want to make the most of their business relationship, but I think the OC and/or IEOC Line would have been better (obviously going all the way to Oceanside). Heck even if they chose to make the 91 Line they would have the LA Union to Fullerton portion of the OC Line and Riverside to Anaheim Canyon section of the IEOC Line made already. This would make route extensions from Anaheim Canyon and Fullerton down to Oceanside pretty easy. The SB to Riverside section also wouldn't be too difficult to add.
Obviously I'd be pissed if they did all of this modular network building without combining maps for a seamless experience, but surely TSW5 can be upgraded to UE5 to make use of the Modular Game Features functionality to load in additional map modules depending on your chosen route (or switch position if you're coming up to a divergence of modules).
Timetabling all the routes should be easy to make consistent and it's not like there are that many services on Cajon Pass to sync up and I'm sure Amtrak and DTG would be willing to sell a Southwest Chief DLC to use the 91 Line (or OC and IEOC Lines) for LA Union - Fullerton - Riverside - SB and Cajon Pass for the extension through Victorville and up to Barstow. With the lines to Oceanside and licensing from Coaster, the Oceanside to SD Santa Fe route would complete the PacSurfliner route and give us a really expansive SoCal rail network. That would be a lot of SoCal commuter rail and I'd love to see something different than the same DE, UK, US options but I'd also love vast networks that were designed to be linked up.

Churning out routes already in TSClassic is just an easy cop out made by DTG and any 3rd party from going on field trips. Or relying on 3rd party resources so they don't have to do anything other than publish it. Also Banging out this much in just the 1st and 2nd Qtr of 2024 as well? Sound like Focus is pressuring them a bit. So in hindsight, yes it's a bit bleugh but the New Boss wants action.

A few notes having just checked vagonweb. 4024 in cityjet livery are usually scheduled for R91 services with some also being run by 4744 unscheduled. DTG adding the 4744 would have probably been a good opportunity as these could not only operate R91 but also CJX9 services from Payerbach to Wiener Neustadt.
Couldn't find any examples of 4023 runs on vagonweb but there's definitely photos of them out there so perhaps they only run R91 irregularly or did in the recent past.

I'm extremely interested in the Tadami line, more countries is always a good new to me!
I disagree about the London overground, definitely will pick it on day one, unless there are massive mistakes. I personally have nothing against short or extremely short routes until they have an amount of details that interest me and keep my eyes engaged while driving. This is also the reason why for me the best DLC to date is Berninaline, simply amazing scenery!
Definitely interested in the Austrian route, scenery seems amazing also there.
I'm moderately interested in the german/austrian route. germany to me seems more or less always the same. City, then forest, then small village, then forest again...
Definitely not interested in US routes, to me they are always either boring desert or boring uninspiring city, so most probably I'll skip them both.
What I don't understand is: if, as it seems, we are doomed to stay in California, why not introducing the Pacific Surfliner? That will have an amazing scenery.
I've nothing against the cargo packs, everything that adds more layers or services is always welcome. Usually I buy these packs when they go on sale, they don't cost much and add hours of fun. It's just that at the moment I'm more in to passengers transport, so lets see...
Oh yeah, there's still Scotland and the 104.
Scotland I think I'll wait to see the line thanks to some youtubers, if it's interesting enough, why not.
About the 104, I don't know, honestly, I can understand that many people will like it, but I'm not a huge fan of the class 101 already, is this thing of having a manual gearbox that kills the enjoinment for me. I like this game because it's extremely relaxing, but playing the 101 with a keyboard, you look more like a pianist in the end.
As far as I understood the 104 will be no different, still manual gearbox, so, at least at the moment, I'll pass on this one.

I'd really reject the idea that Rosenheim to Salzburg is an uninteresting route, it's part of the Paris - Munich - Vienna - Budapest trunk route, so has lots of potential for service pattern and is quite scenic too. Also I don't see why the standard gauge nature of the Semmeringbahn counts against it - I'm glad that DTG are building on their OEBB network, rather than abandoning it after one train like they did with SBB. It's a scenic route with different services available - my biggest frustration is that only the 2nd class Eurofima coach is coming. Now *that* is lazy and breaks the immersion.
NB all Tauruses, be they DB, OEBB, MRCE, Dispolok, PKP, etc are identical, give or take the odd pantograph variation

I am a bit annoyed that they cannot include the Inter7City on the new Scottish route, as (believe it or not) the SR HSTs are essentially reskinned GWR HSTs, with the same seats in different colours and the cab looks very identical bar the removal of ATP. It definitely would be a nice train to add as A.I. at least, to add a bit more traffic. It would've been nice if DTG had taken into account the 800s when developing it for the ECML, as it could fit in more routes, and it isn't a massive difference to the 801. I'm skeptical about the 170, as we've seen what happened with the 150/2. I will wait till the release of the route and see the reviews.
The Skyhook pack is promising, a new wagon again - I personally like the freight packs as it adds more freight variety, and I do enjoy the 66 (although I do want a new freight train). Not keen on the 158 SR reskin though.

And I welcome the overground line that we will be getting. (I would like more modern ac line so I can use my other ac trains).
Oh and I not long ago I have bought the ScotRail express route with the 385, I checked Edinburgh Park where you said there was missing catergory there. I checked where it was and it seems to have been (finally) fixed.

To your question to NZ/Oceania routes, TSW said that they can’t do a route there because of the licensing. Its utterly ridiculous. For a person who lives in Australia its just straight up boring knowing that every new route is either going to be in USA, Uk or Germany. The only exciting thing they mentioned was the tadami line.

Dovetail just continues to anger the player-base every day, I'm sure of it. It seems to me like the licensing issues are just a convenient excuse for them to maintain the status quo of almost exclusively making boring British and German routes (with rare exceptions in the US), which will push more and more people away. When are these clowns ever going to (at least attempt) to treat their customers with respect?

Definitely looking forward to Japan the route looks to be quite beautiful in its scenery, looking forward to the the Scottish route because of the 170 DMU's are always welcome simply because you can spawn them on any route and not have to worry about power. Goblin line with it's 13 miles length is more than likely targeted to players who don't have time to do long routes

TSW add ons seem more disappointing every time. Semmeringbahn and Tadami Line are the only interesting looking ones for me right now. San Bernardino Line seems very disappointing. If they wanted to do a US passenger route, I think the New Haven line with ACS-64 And M8 would've been better as it's highly requested. Maybe San Bernardino will at least include a GP38-2 Or SD40-2 for service variation. One can hope. I don't have enough interest on UK stuff to comment on the rest.

  • @floha978
    @floha978 5 місяців тому +1

Well i live not too far away from the semmeringbahn, so i can tell that both the 1116 and 4024 still drive there but the 4744 is mostly used for the regional services but of course dovetail would rather reuse already existing rolling stock. Same goes for the passenger coaches, of course there is still IC trainsbut the majority consits of railjet services but they arent included as well. Other examples for trains running frequently on this route would be the ÖBB 1144 or 1293 Vectron...
To sum this up, in terms of rolling stock this route lacks the diversity of trains it has in real life. Oh, and this is the route connecting the two biggest cities in Austria: Graz and Vienna.

    • @DC4260Productions
      @DC4260Productions  5 місяців тому +1

That's one of many things I hate about DTG; their tendency to reuse existing rolling stock or make something that's (conveniently) very similar to what we already have (like the 1116 and BR182). I just looked up photographs of the 4744, and that doesn't look too bad; she would also be a welcome addition to the game (same goes for the 1144 and 1293).
It's probably a daft idea, giving DTG's habit of massively disappointing people, but I hope that the Semmeringbahn will still turn out good despite the lack of diverse rolling stock.

It be nice if the older routes were brought up to TSW 4 standards such as more scenery, timetables or even new locomotives that operate on the line. Each route review I've seen you do you mention about potential route extensions or other locomotives that run on said routes... WSR was a great start albeit a rather....simple... Choice when it came to "Remastering" routes to TSW 4 standards so to speak

I know you will keep banging the drum for an NZ route as it’s your home country, but I would imagine NZ has finished way down the request list in the recent Winter Survey and those requesting NZ are a tiny minority.
The issue with this game is the community is split into being particular fans on the whole of either UK, European (mainly German) or American routes, and will always feel that their particular area of interest is most neglected. While some will have a favourite route country but will play others too, some won’t which further exacerbated the issue on social media commenting and the forums. I have very little interest in anything other than the UK, although it doesn’t mean I refuse to drive German or US routes.

I'm really looking forward for the Semmering, as it is one of the few routes I have for the TS Classic and I always wonder how it would look with better graphics and proper quality locos. I think the route length is okay (although a extension to Wien would have been nice), given that the average speed is quiet low. However, I think they should have included the Railjet, as that is the most dominant train on the route today and could layer onto the Salzburg -Rosenheim route aswell as S-Bahn Vorarlberg.
Tadami looks interesting too, finally something that is not located in Europe or the North America. Maybe they will slowly start to take the "world" aspect more serious (not that Europa would have a good collection of roures, with France having only one, Switzerland having only small gauge, Italy having almost no coverage and Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Benelux and Iberia missing completly).
I also agree that the other DLCs are not really interesting, although I might have a look into Salzburg - Rosenheim and the London Overgrund should they have a proper discount.
I think it's a shame they were going for another Metrolink route instead of offering a route with Amtrack rolling stock.
No matter what happens, I've decided not to buy any new DTG/Rivet/Skyhook route without discount anyway because - even if they are interesting - they are never worth the price. I just hope they don't fuck up the Semmering so I can buy it some time after release. Same goes for the Tadami line, there were just too many "unforseeable problems" (missing testing) with recent releases.

    • @DC4260Productions
      @DC4260Productions  5 місяців тому +1

That's something I forgot to mention in the video; the RailJet would be a great addition to the Semmeringbahn, so I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if DTG never bother running with such a good opportunity (although there's probably some kind of licensing issue there, as always). Apart from the London Overground, I'm not sure if I'll get any of these routes as soon as they're released, because you're always taking a gamble (especially with Rivet's stuff).

    • @spygot
      @spygot 5 місяців тому +1

@@DC4260Productions I think it isn't a licensing issue but just DTG being lazy. Railjet is product of ÖBB who already licensed other rolling stock. I assume DTG tries to minimize work in rolling stock: In the current situation they only create one new model (Bmz Coach) while the Railjet would need 5 new models (loco, first class, bistro, second class, control coach). The railjet class 1216 looks similar to the 1016/1116 (DB 182) but is different, having 4 pantographs, slightly different details and other sound. They also can't skip some coaches (like the Bistro and control coach in the Deutsche Bahn IC) because Railjets are permanently coupled and only run in a specific configuration (basically they are treated like a multiple unit).
Other hints that DTG tries to limit rolling stock work are found in the Salzburg-Rosenheim route (with only the 111 being new), Gospel Oak - Barking riverside (again only 1 train, at least an MU) and Bernadino line (no new rolling stock, only reskin).
I also don't buy DLCs on release anymore, the only exception being new developers if the content is promising or something from TSG (Niddertalbahn really shows what's possible in terms of detail imo). Can't say anything about Just trains though, they may also be a candidate for my "list". Just wasn't interested in the route.

GOBLIN is also fairly intresting product for me but other routes are pointless in my opinion. All the station buildings of substance were demolished in the 80s, most are just platforms with no canopies and the odd portacabin, totally uninspiring from a station perspective (with the odd location like Barking being the exception).
It runs through some run down areas of London or redevelopment areas, so I am not expecting the scenery to be particularly exciting or at the same time terrible. It is rather short too.

They will show freight but won’t even give it to us because it takes actual effort to make scenarios that aren’t linear commuter two minute type ins.. tsw does everything to make US players just pissed off.
