Not only has the Candy Man been on fire, he's back where he wants to be. Cubs played the Nationals in July and Candy told one of the Cubs coaches who was there during his time with the club in 16/17 that they need to keep winning so he could be traded back to the Cubs. When it looked like they were going to be sellers, Stroman openly said he'd come back as a free agent. There's something special in that clubhouse.

Cubs front office has proven to be really smart. I wanted a stroman extension and hated Taillon. Stroman fell off and now that 4 year deal for Taillon is really paying off. Bellinger is the must UNDERPAID man in baseball. What a brilliant comeback. Tauchman was out of baseball last year. Now it's an important hitter for the cubs with an over .800 ops. I feel really good about this team's future. I really hope we can sign Belli long term in the off season.

As a Dodgers fan, I'm glad to see Bellinger doing well again, I am a big fan of him. It is probably hard to play in LA since they are always a major playoff contending team and for a newer player to go out there and have to perform in that pressure is rough, I think Chicago will be a great new start for him if they keep him after this year. I wish him the best of luck.

As sad as it was to see them break up that core that finally got them to the promised land, I don't think I've ever seen a decision to let go of the past and start retooling the roster work out better. They parlayed all three of them into legitimate prospects that have a very real chance of becoming important pieces on a contending team. They were all going to demand salaries that couldn't be justified with their performance over the couple of years prior to being dealt. And they all only continued to decline even further after being dealt.

Nearly every move the Cubs have made has been a master stroke. It defies explanation. They've turned numerous reclamation projects into stars. Even the Suzuki signing will work out eventually because he'll return to form in time. They've been pointing toward 2024 as when their next window would open up by promoting their best young players to the majors. It's scary to think how good they'll be next season when they add the success stories of this season to a few young studs ready to tear it up. It reminds me of how the 2015 team gelled a year before they expected it to.

They're 28 and 29 respectively and while both are playing well right now, they were both clearly on the decline prior to their recent resurgence. Putting the emotion of how exciting this team is to watch the way they're playing right now, the reality is that this is likely just a lightning in a bottle situation. They've got all kinds of legit prospects that are going to be coming up in the next few years, and if even half of them live up to the potential they're projected at then you're going to need a lot of money to lock those guys up long term. It would make no sense to tie up huge amounts of money in long term contracts for aging guys on the downside of their careers that aren't likely to be productive, if not retired, by the time that young core is coming into it's own.

    1. You mentioned Swanson but failed to mention the fact that he has the highest fWAR of the SS that were available last offseason.
    2. Swanson and Nico Hoerner are a dynamic duo up the middle
    3. Jeimer Candelario who was brought in from the Nationals is 16/18 I think. Candelario has done really well for the Cubs.
    4. They also have Ben Brown and Cade Horton two pitchers that could be brilliant. They also got Wesneski from the Yankees and he had a couple dominant starts.
    5. Jose Cuas was acquired in a trade with the Royals and while he only had one inning pitched, it was a dominant performance.
    6. They designatedTrey Mancini and Eric Hosmer for assignment (two deals that fell through because they both sucked)
Also I wouldn't say the Cubs are the SMARTEST team in baseball but rather one of the most cost effective big market teams in the league.

You also have to consider the recent strugles of marcus stroman and seia Suzuki. Finaly, nick madrigal is definitely a notable player delt at the 2021 deadline and it's also very important to consider how bad the nl central is. The cubs are solid in 2023 but they are not a powerhouse and I would be shocked to see them make it past game 4 of the division series.

You talk about Taillon, but don't mention how he has a sub-2.50 ERA since his start against the Yankees in July.
What about the addition of Candelario at the deadline to solidify the infield, and Madrigal upping his game defensively and at the plate since being sent down to AAA?
Christopher Morel becoming more rounded and filling in at DH.

Yan Gomes is also a great defensive catcher and makes the pitching staff better; any stats about pitch framing or ERA with Gomes vs other (previous years’) catchers? Some baseball videos overkill with the stats but I think part of the beauty of the game is its metrics that can support your claims. Still, this was a good video and I’m a new subscriber. The reason Bryant was traded was because his asswipe agent already made the claim the Cubs would never be able to afford him when he became a free agent and that Kris wasn't interested in signing with them. The Cubs would've kept him but the agent messed it up, why you might asked well we all know the more the player makes the bigger cut the agent gets and if Kris took a "hometown discount" that means less $$$ for the agent. It didn't help with Madden bouncing him around from 3rd to 2nd to the outfield trying to turn him into a utility guy which made his hitting suffer along with getting drill in the head by a pitch. Kris could've been the anchor for the future but his agent messed that all up. I don't think after seeing those comments the team trusted holding onto him just in case the agent was right.

I enjoyed this video but would like to mention a few things:
Firstly, Taillon HAS gotten it going! He's been pitching like an ace over the past few months. It's Stroman who has been struggling bad lately but he was dealing with an injury and is on the IR right now so I expect him to be just fine when he's back and healthy.
Secondly, you neglected defense almost entirely. As far as Danby goes, he might be the best shortstop in the game at the moment because of how incredibly he is as a defender. Same goes for Bellinger at center, and prospect Pete-Crow Armstrong is also an incredible defender.

(note brewers fan bias may be there, but you didnt mention anything about the rookies of the brewers)

Just one of Roberts many mistakes in how he handled Beli, the Rotation and the general batting order. Poor Clayton, he will never win a full World Series while Roberts is Manager.

For long-term success the Cubs need to bring in a true ace and a solid back-end rotation pitcher. They need to sign Bellinger and Candelaria in the off-season. The rest of the pieces are in place for a good run the next 3-4 seasons... Just looking forward to a fun month of baseball down the stretch in the NL Central.
