You Bet Your Life #57-05 The Never-ending Quiz Segment (Secret word 'Street', Oct 24, 1957)

  • This show is notable for the first quiz segment, which goes on and on and on with no end in sight. Due to the peculiar rules they used during this phase of the show, it's theoretically possible for the game to never end (at least until they ran out of questions). I'm surprised we didn't see this kind of thing happen more often, but it's possible that when it did the quiz segment was edited. Here Groucho gets in a great line at the end that makes the whole thing worthwhile; I suspect that may be why the producers decided not to edit the quiz this time.
    Groucho's reference at 1:45 to a woman who makes wonderful pizza is to Betina Consolo, who appeared on several episodes the previous season, hunting for a husband unsuccessfully.
    COUPLE #1: Glory Dawson, police woman / Ennio Belognini
    COUPLE #2: Phil & Frank Interlandi, identical twins

    The second part of this program, with the Interlandi brothers, holds a very dear memory for me. I knew Phil (the one on the right, as filmed), rather well, his girlfriend in 1973 being my secretary then. On one visit he opened a floor drawer and told me to pick one sketch of the artwork he had done for Playboy and I could have it! It was a signed cartoon of a pregnant woman in front of her lawyer and the caption read, something like "As you sow, so shall you reap"! His demeanor then was exactly like this Groucho episode! Phenomenal individual, so wonderfully kind, generous, & funny!

    Ennio Bolognini, acclaimed cellist and conductor of the Las Vegas Philharmonic, died at 85 with his cello donated by his musically accomplished wife to the Smithsonian and an obit in the NY Times. Modest man led an intriguing life. A rare recording snippet is on the internet, an accompaniment of the Marteri Orchestra on "Street Scene." Fantastic!

      @Alienart - It was strange to me too, and until someone explains it, I'll go along with - it's something, only locals are aware of.
      or...He was surprised that Daytripper's were starting to arrive in the area, before they even had a chance to set-up for their summer stay.
      Ever been fishing at a great spot, and other anglers start passing through, and throw-in the odd line...and totally destroy your mood.
      -I'd imagine that here...as you are going to your secluded summer cottage, and people start walking past your door. It can be annoying. - That might not be the joke at all - A possibility, that's all.
      Any ideas as to what it might be yet?
      The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning towards it being a happening that only locals would understand immediately.

      @@justplainbrad7713 There was time I travelled to Arizona where the time lagged so far behind my usual Central Day Light Savings time I woke up totally refreshed at 4:00 am. I sat on the hotel balcony with coffee to read a good novel, watch the desert sunrise and soak in the peace. Then along came golfers driving golf carts and partying it up. I never knew golfers got going that early. It was mildly amusing I guess, but not laugh out loud amusing. It could be the cartoon just wasn't his best. I have to say though, modern shows rarely prompt this pleasant kind of discussion!

    Many comments have appeared online about the nature of groucho's contestants, and rehearsals, etc. It is rather obvious the guests were not chosen from a spinning drum of postcards, BUT once the quiz portion began it was on the level, the spinning wheel, the whole schemer-

    • @grouchomarx-youbetyourlife7476
      @grouchomarx-youbetyourlife7476  8 років тому +4

      They were outright deceptive about the contestant selection process in the first few years of the program, making up a line of bull about "the audience selected our next two contestants just before the show went on the air. . . " In truth, the contestants were very carefully chosen in advance. The show wouldn't have worked otherwise.
      By the mid 1950s, they were no longer routinely making completely false statements about how contestants were found, but still, every now and then, you can catch obviously faked stories offered by contestants about how they got on the show, if it provided the setup required for one of Groucho's scripted lines. YBYL was a very, very carefully produced show, which was a big part of what made it work.

      @@grouchomarx-youbetyourlife7476 Very astute observations. I understand Groucho's staff interviewed the contestants beforehand. Cue cards were made up & then hidden so he could ask questions and make quips. Not dishonest; just clever. Notice how he often looks straight ahead. I believe he's reading his lines. All that said, surely Groucho was fast on his feet and very quick witted.
