  • Groucho Marx hosts You Bet Your Life, in an original network television show with commercials as aired in 1953. This series was later syndicated as "The Best of Groucho". The one, the only, Groucho! If the contestants said the secret word, they won some extra cash in this popular quiz show from TV's Golden era. Groucho's back and forth banter between host and contestants is a comedy delight. This 1953 show is episode 23 of the 1953 season. The first couple is housewife Bernadine Lodge along with Dr. Wynne York, a 26 year old doctor from Ireland. The second couple is Laura "Hammy" Hammersley, a housewife from Warren, Ohio and Raymond Harrand who works for a swimming pool company. The third couple is Mr. and Mrs. Richard Russell. Richard is 21 years old and Gloria who is visibly pregnant is 20 years old. Groucho's six year old daughter Melinda Marx comes out and sings a duet with her dad, "You're Just in Love". George Fenneman is the announcer, and Groucho jokes with him as well as the contestants. This TV show is the original airing with commercials, as aired on television in 1953. The sponsor is the 1953 DeSoto, and Chrysler dealership's used cars. Some neat vintage autos are shown. Transferred from 16mm b-w film.

70 years later and it is still fun to watch. Grouchy listened to operettas all the time.

I knew Groucho from the 1960s until his passing in 1977 and he told me that NBC "threw out" most of the television shows (he still had some in his garage) so where you got such an incredibly pristine copy is a mystery to me but God bless you for sharing it.
    P. S. Most of the radio versions of the shows still exist and were aired on NBC radio earlier than the TV version.

The 1950-'54 episodes were never syndicated. "THE BEST OF GROUCHO" was initially syndicated in the fall of 1961 (through the late '60s), with 250 episodes from the 1954-'61 series.

Nice. This is an early show. The format changed over the years. It was one of the most successful shows of all time.
This was as good as the later shows. A lot of it is scripted.
Groucho had the best producers. He wasn't just a comic genius. This was his third incarnation Vaudeville, Hollywood movies and TV.

Groucho is a legend and really had to work here to make this episode fit together. Some parts were hard to watch.

Groucho Marx passed away on Aug. 19, 1977; only 3 days after Elvis Presley. His death got very little publicity due to all the mourning over Elvis!! 😢😢

By 1963, those '53 DeSotos were gone. Rusting in junk yards. No quality control whatsoever.

Not quite true. I guy came into to make keys for a Barn find with the Power Master Six. Light surface rust coming thru the original paint job but otherwise in good running order. Ugly as a Parson's widow but it made it away under it's own power.

Though she was no Shirley Temple, Melinda was a real cutie. And she grew into a real talent….singer and dancer and actor. Very fine, but just took a bit longer than Temple did.

Melinda never got anywhere with a career in show business because there was really nothing exceptional about her performances.

    • @LyleFrancisDelp

@@alexvaliansky7707 That's a rather nasty comment. Can you back it up with facts? I've seen plenty of performers who made it big without anything exceptional in their performances. What I've seen from Melinda was really quite good. Excellent stage presence and a fine singing voice.

@@LyleFrancisDelp The fact is that her career really went nowhere after the mid sixties, although I've read that at least initially her dad was playing her up, but she wasn't all that interested in a show business career. She was more interested in settling down and raising a family.

The second couple with the 65 year old woman named Laura "Hammy" Hammersley, I almost fell off my chair. She is only 65? She looks at least 85-90 years old! Most people smoked in those days. Smoking itself ages people rapidly. It's amazing how rapidly people aged in those days compared to the modern era.
