New Zealand All Blacks: 15 Israel Dagg, 14 Cory Jane, 13 Conrad Smith, 12 Ma'a Nonu, 11 Julian Savea, 10 Aaron Cruden, 9 Piri Weepu, 8 Kieran Read, 7 Richie McCaw (c), 6 Liam Messam, 5 Sam Whitelock, 4 Luke Romano, 3 Owen Franks, 2 Andrew Hore, 1 Tony Woodcock
Replacements: 16 Keven Mealamu, 17 Charlie Faumuina, 18 Brodie Retallick, 19 Victor Vito, 20 Aaron Smith, 21 Beauden Barrett, 22 Tamati Ellison.
Springboks South Africa: 15 Zane Kirchner, 14 Bryan Habana, 13 Jean de Villiers (c), 12 Frans Steyn, 11 Francois Hougaard, 10 Morne Steyn, 9 Ruan Pienaar, 8 Duane Vermeulen, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Francois Louw, 5 Juandre Kruger, 4 Flip van der Merwe, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Adriaan Strauss, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.
Replacements: 16 Tiaan Liebenberg, 17 Dean Greyling, 18 Andries Bekker, 19 Marcell Coetzee, 20 Johan Goosen, 21 Juan de Jongh, 22 Pat Lambie.
    Referee: George Clancy (IRE)
    The scorers:
    For New Zealand:
    Tries: Dagg, A Smith
    Cons: Cruden
    Pens: Cruden 2
    For South Africa:
    Try: Habana
    Pens: M Steyn, Goosen
    Referee: George Clancy (IRE)
Moment of the match: Habana's touchdown was certainly one for the highlights reel, but replacement scrum-half Aaron Smith - dropped to the bench for a breach of team protocol last weekend - turned disgrace into triumph when he came off the bench to score New Zealand's decisive try.
Villain of the match: We seriously doubt we'll see Dean Greyling in a Bok jersey again after his error-prone and ill-disciplined 30 minutes on the field... oh, make that 20 minutes on the field - he spent 10 in the bin for his assault on McCaw.

This actually turned out to be a big moment in Springbok history. We were always known for being dirty. But Meyer never picked Greyling again after this game. For me this was the moment (or at least one of them in that time period) where SA started to turn the tide with our off the ball nonsense. Went from being the dirtiest team in rugby to winning a wc in 2019 with the best disciplinary record.

      Epic victory for Junior Boks
      by Brenden Nel 15 June 2014, 11:50
South Africa’s under-20 team overcame a shocking TMO decision and a rampant New Zealand team to stage a magnificent comeback and surge their way into the IRB Junior World Championship final with a 32-25 win over the New Zealand under-20 side in Albany on Sunday.
The Junior Boks produced a monster rolling maul just two minutes from the end to get ahead as hooker Corniel Els ended up crossing the line in a mountain of bodies to ensure his team won a tense and sometimes strange semifinal against the odds.
This was the second time the Junior Boks defeated their New Zealand counterparts in the space of nine days, something that is an achievement in itself, but the manner in which they overcame the odds was spectacular in itself and says a lot about the team’s character under fire.
The win stretched the winning streak over New Zealand at junior level to four games in the last three IRB Junior World Championship tournaments and means they will face an epic final against possibly the form team of the tournament - defending champions England, who swept past Ireland to book their place in the final.
But the Junior Boks needed to overcome an amazingly poor television match official decision that swung the course of the game, and contributed 10 points to the scoreline as powerful midfielder Andre Esterhuyzen was sinbinned for what looked to be a legitimate tackle.
What made the whole situation even more farcical was the fact that Argentinean referee Federico Anselmi indicated he was happy to play on, but the TMO Ben Skeen - a New Zealander - intervened and recommended a yellow card.
How a hometown TMO could have been appointed for a match like this is another question, but it left a sour taste as the Junior All Blacks swept into a lead by taking full advantage of their man advantage.
Like the pool game nine days earlier, it was the Junior All Blacks who made the perfect start, scoring first through hooker Hame Faiva, after a turnover ball was superbly sent wide and the hooker made a bullocking run down the touchline. There may have been elements of a forward pass in the try, but it was given.
The Junior Boks hit back against the run of play, as captain Handre Pollard intercepted a ball as the New Zealanders attacked and ran 60 metres to score.
Pollard’s influence in this team remains immense, and it won’t be a surprise if his exploits here and his play in Super Rugby see him called up to the Springboks before the start of this year’s Castle Rugby Championship.
Still, the yellow card, which came when Esterhuyzen wrapped his arms around All Black flyhalf Richard Mo’unga and slung him to the ground, hit the Junior Boks hard.
Not only did the impressive fullback Damian McKenzie add a penalty, but the free-ranging style of attack suddenly found openings, enough to carve a hole for winger Tevita Li to score unopposed.
Although Pollard grabbed a penalty back before the end of the first half, it looked at that stage if the Junior Boks were hanging on by their fingernails, and the momentum was with the home side.
They extended the halftime lead of 15-10 to 18-10 shortly after the break when McKenzie added another penalty, but a stroke of luck - one of the few to go the Junior Boks’ way - seemed to swing the momentum back towards the visitors.
An up and under was not taken by New Zealand and when it was slapped back towards their own line, it landed perfectly in the hands of winger Sergeal Peterson, who sprinted away untouched to make it a one-point game.
Pollard added a penalty in the 57th minute to take the lead for the Junior Boks - a 45 metre bomb that was smack on target.
But then a defensive lineout in the South African 22 was fluffed, and missed the jumper completely, with the New Zealanders pouncing and sending it wide to beat a scrambling defence as Vincent Tavae-Aso went in at the corner.
At 25-20 with 13 minutes left, it would take something massive from the South Africans to win the game.
And that came in the form of Esterhuyzen, who took the ball in the New Zealand 22, broke two tackles and put in a power surge to the line to even matters up.
From there the Junior Boks simply smothered the opposition at will as the clock ticked down. And when they got their chance in the 22, they formed the perfect rolling maul, with backline players joining to get them close to the line.
It was a juggernaut that was impossible to stop, and one which would settle the contest once and for all, crowning a memorable victory for South African rugby.
A night where not even a TMO could stop the Junior Boks from their task.
Whatever happens in the final, the future of South African rugby looks safe in their hands.

OK once or twice there is an occassion where the aggression exceeds the boundaries, but hey that's the edge that gives us epics like the 2013 game at Ellis Park in what I consider the most complete game of rugby I have ever seen. I can forgive the odd blow out caused by a rush of blood to the head, it's the sly calculated cheap shot (Quade Cooper style) that needs to be eradicated from the game.

Are you by any chance from New Zealand? The real problem here was the referee, his lack of applying the rules of rugby allowed Richie to continuously be offside and play the ball on the ground. Punching people in the face is a result of this, this will always happen to any team that gets cheated. I am not advocating punching people in the face, the ref however should face severe consequences for such play. This ref was "inconsistant" throughtout the match in applying the rules. That means cheating, unacceptable in a professional sport.

Tbf, rugby players the world over were waiting over 15 years for the referees to "deal with" Richie McCaw. It wasn't that he was offside most of his playing career, or off his feet, or that he seemed to have 3 or 4 hands in the ruck, no. It was the fact that he would do it right in front of the referee and still nothing was done. An amazingly talented rugby player with the ability to "endlessly infringe" throughout his career without being punished. Sort of the Donald Trump of rugby. The fact that Greyling decided to take the law into his own hands, well, I sort of see where he is coming from. If the referee won't enforce the laws of the game, I guess Greyling decided he would. Whilst I don't condone his behaviour, do I understand it? For sure. The question we should be asking is how McCaw got away with all the stuff he did during his career. Now that would be an interesting watch.

By how their protected species players handle on-field discrepancies and the shit they get for the foul play they constantly engage in and never get penalised for ? Figures. No wonder Richard Lowe was so popular over there. Lowe by name and low by nature...... and Kiwis have the hide to still constantly bitch about an underarm ball bowled in 1981 by Trevor Chappell at the order of his brother Greg to stop a bunny of a number 11 batsman from jagging a 6 and $35,000 prizemoney on the last ball of a one-day cricket game ? Richie McCaw deserved to be knocked out for that rubbish if the referees wouldn't take action and penalise him. After all, that's the exact reason they exist or we wouldn't need them, right ? Australian NRL has been infected by the same type of protected species/manufactured sporting fairy tale crap in Melbourne Storm and Cameron Smith. Most people who are true Rugby League fans just want him gone from the game ASAP, that said McCaw wouldn't have lasted 15 minutes in a Rugby League match.

Holding back deserves a card - Kaplan
      by Brenden Nel 21 May 2014, 15:45
Top retired referee Jonathan Kaplan has called on referees to stamp out the illegal tactic of holding players back in rugby games.
Much of the attention these past few days has been focused on the red card given to Sharks flanker Jean Deysel and his three-week ban for making contact with the face of a Crusaders player out of frustration as his leg was being held.
But there has been little attention to the fact that the tactic of illegally tackling players away from the ruck, or holding onto them is the problem that often causes the frustration for players and causes them to lash out.
While not trying to justify Deysel’s actions, there is an increasing tendency for teams in Vodacom Super Rugby - particularly those from New Zealand - to use the tactic of holding players back, or use up the space in front of the ball, allowing the ball carrier to slip in behind. It does seem to be an Australasian tendency that is slowly increasing in Super Rugby this year.
Deysel’s act was both reckless and wrong, and he was rightly red-carded by referee Rohan Hoffmann. He can also be very lucky his three-week sentence was as light as it was, with Sanzar’s sanction being seen as very lenient for what was a serious offence
Kaplan has called for referees to take “immediate action” including the immediate issuing of cards for this specific infringement and calls the tactic “the biggest issue in Southern hemisphere rugby at the moment.”
Kaplan told Supersport.com that it may have been difficult for referees to pick it up in the beginning, but it has slowly become worse over the past few years.
“Certainly a few years ago when it reared its ugly head, it was very difficult for referees to pick up because it hadn’t been such a predominant issue in the game as it has become. I’m not sure that a lot of coaching is being put into it, and I’m not sure that the correct sanction is being applied to the transgressor. If the punishment does not fit the crime, then obviously teams will carry on doing it,” he told Supersport.com
“If they are getting away with it and continuing to do it, it sends out a clear message that it is worthwhile to persist with this type of behaviour, because referees are not dealing with this issue effectively.”
Kaplan, who still holds the record for the most test matches by a referee, gave two quick examples of how the tactic was being employed, saying it has a profound influence on the game.
“In an earlier game this season, Nizaam Carr was pinned against the posts for a couple of seconds by a Reds player, and when he finally let him go, the post he was supposed to be defending was pretty much a vacuum and the Reds scored a try under the posts, with nothing done about it.
"Similarly in the game between the Stormers and Crusaders, and no surprise that it is the same team, Jean de Villiers - who I rate as an exceptional captain - was heard talking to the referee, incidentally the same referee Rohan Hoffman, about what the referee wanted him to do because his players were being continually held back.
“There is no question that Hoffman dealt with one instance expertly, where Schalk Burger was held back, but there were numerous others in the game that were missed. That is the real issue. It is not the one or two that are effectively dealt with, it is those missed that are encouraging teams to persist with the behaviour.
“He is a markedly improved referee, but in this particular game he has missed them and missed them repeatedly. Sometimes these type of tactics have a profound influence on the results of matches.”
Kaplan says therefore referees need to get tough and a yellow card is the only way to go for this “cynical” tactic.
“What I advocate is a yellow card. It is a cynical infringement which doesn’t need a warning, it actually needs a card - it needs a yellow card, and an immediate yellow card. If teams see that you are doing it and they are going to be carded, I can almost guarantee they will stop doing it. It is very important to note that, it is a cynical infringement which falls under foul play which does not need a warning.
“Referees are too placating, they are too understanding in respect of this aspect of the game, and they need to ratchet up their sanction a whole lot better than it is at the moment. Whether that requires better coaching or a better understanding of what is at play, that is a moot point.
“But, for sure the sanction needs to be upgraded.”
“These comments are pointing out something that is becoming a big issue in the modern game, particularly in the Southern hemisphere, particularly in Super Rugby and it needs to be eradicated immediately. We cannot wait for next season, it needs to be done now, and the reality is that it has been going on for a few years now and it is becoming progressively worse.
“Either the refs need to be taken to task or they need to be given ammunition to sanction the behaviour in a different way so that it doesn’t persist.”
“I say the same thing every week. It is the biggest issue in Southern hemisphere rugby at the moment. I am hopeful that it will be sorted soon.”

Now go look for a goat or a sheep whilst us real men are having a discussion of some rugga!

Masterdebator Major BS call there. Firstly the Botha headbutt incident was about 3 years after Justin Marshall quit playing, it was Jimmy Cowan he headbutted. Clearly your memory is as clouded as your objectivity when you cannot even identify the players concerned. Secondly Cowan's jersey tug was wrong, and was picked up by the TMO and might well have resulted in a Boks penalty and perhaps more but Botha blew that chance with his reaction and as will always happen the serious foul play will turn around the penalty.

Here’s what I don’t get: all these people including the commentators saying McCaw was undoubtedly being a nuisance, almost implying he deserved this...
McCaw had already been cleared out by SA #8 - dangerously so, by the way, should’ve been a yellow for 8, see replay at 1:53).
By the time Grayling came in, McCaw was out of the contest area, sitting on his arse, unable to interfere with the ruck even if he’d tried to.
It had nothing to do with punishing an opponent behaving cynically, it is simply assault.
#8 should have seen yellow and a red for Grayling. To the dickheads who’d remind me this isn’t tiddlywinks etc, you underestimate just how fucking teak-tough McCaw is - could’ve been knocked out by either of those hits, doesn’t even seem to get a scratch. The bloke is made of fucking iron.

At the end of the day, when the ABs play other powerful rugby nations, it's the superior match fitness that allows them to dominate usually in the 2nd half. Other teams struggle to keep up with the pace. McCaw in my opinion is the best #7 the game has even seen, and that's saying a lot, but other than Carter and Read, I don't think we have the best players in the world in most other positions. Perhaps it's a mentality thing?
