@Jonathan2342 more accurate is the explanation of the red card incoming, less time you give for a possible argue. I'm a rugby ref too and I can tell that is easier even for the supporters understand why you gave a red card if you explain clearer as possible the reason

Imagine if that happened in football, maybe to Messi or Ronaldo or Mbappe; they would have rolled and flipped their way out of the stadium just to get the refs attention.... then they'd get up and continue playing when the ref doesn't acknowledge them, like nothing had happened. Something really needs to be done about simulation, V.A.R. exists in football now, they need to use it to punish those who fake injury for a tactical advantage, it's still cheating after all.
I love Rugby more than football precisely because there is no acting, yet.

What I appreciate the most about rugby is the interactions between ref and players. No cussing, no angry players screaming at refs or horsefuckery and feinting injuries, just respect. When someone is down, they are down for a reason, and the resulting punishment is accepted with no grudges or foul behavior. Totally different to soccer.

You have to be in Rugby, you can't argue with the Ref, that's a huge no no. You can hate other players all you want but you have to show 200% respect to the Ref. That's why nobody tried to dispute with the Ref's choice at all, they have to accept it. Unlike Football (Soccer) where they bitch and moan about everything.

    • @chrisholland7367

Football players are always arguing with the ref sometimes in their face. That's the difference between rugby and football (soccer) in rugby 🏉 the ref's decision is final .violent play will not tolerated players caught may not just sent off for the rest of the game but maybe cited ,possibly fined and banned for several club games but may also have an impact on selection for the international game.

I appreciate how much the game has changed now. 0 tolerance for dirty and overly aggressive plays.
When I was 16 playing for HK National Team, we went to Dubai and played against their National team. They were so dirty and the ref (a local Dubai ref) did not give out a single yellow or red card. The players scratched, punched, kicked, late hit.. It was horrible. My friend broke his leg in that game from a random late late tackle from nowhere. It made me question the sport. How can THIS be Rugby?! Our coaches sent the game footage to the IRB (now called World Rugby). They banned like 4 players from their team, and also found out they had a few overaged players (that explained why they were so much bigger than us and had beards). We had the chance for a rematch... And we won. One of the most memorable Rugby experience I have. I love the Rugby.

One of my most sobering experiences was a visit to a spinal unit. The number of young men there with long term and in most cases permanent disablement caused on the field was really distressing. This was in the days before the ‘head high’ rule and where deliberate collapsing of scrums was commonplace. Too late for those guys, but thankfully things changed, despite the whining about the game ‘going soft’. Now when I see deliberate hits by some feckless idiot with more testosterone than brains, I want more than a red card. A life ban and a GBH charge is more the order. I don’t give a toss about a lost career or a weakened team. There should be zero tolerance. Kudos to the refs for doing their bit on this one. If you have doubts, go to a spinal unit one day and have a chat with an 18 year old coming to grips with being in a wheel chair for the rest of their days.

Not downplaying the dangerousness of UFC at all, but I think in those fights, the person isn't moving as "fast" and is expecting some kind of impact. Here one player is going one way at full force and the other player is countering that by going full force in the other direction so the impact is probably a lot bigger and more dangerous.

In rugby if someone purposefully elbows you in the face they will get a red card. In UFC A they get a fight of the night bonus. They measured Francis' the UFC heavyweight champs punching power and its tbe highest ever recorded. So both sports have huge impacts but in UFC it's not like wrestling or rugby where you run full speed at each other. All in all its probably not worthy of comparing the two, either for impact scale or medical response as both are at the top of the pile.

And both codes of rugby are now facing massive issues due to brain injuries, early onset dementia etc. which will kill the game off. Rugby has experienced a steep decline in participation in the UK, 2 clubs went bankrupt last year and the game's governing body is facing a lawsuit from hundreds of former players.
Parents don't want their children playing the sport, and I don't blame them. In my day, which was really not that long ago, the average player wasn't that big. Nowadays, thanks to gym culture and the attendant steroid abuse that goes with it - including at amateur level - players can hit a lot, lot harder. Attempts to make the game safer will completely fail unless these issues are tackled, but the rugby authorities think that concussion is the only problem, and will fail to see that players are giving up on the game because they just don't fancy being hit hard by some 18st meathead.

The interesting thing about the Lote Tuqiri spear tackle on Richie McCaw is that no one ever noticed Stephen Larkham spear tackling Leon MacDonald after he passed the ball to McCaw in that passage of play.
Plus, given you had the incident with Jimmy Cowan getting hit by Ma'a Nonu, do you have footage of an incident in the 2009 SR game between the Blues and Highlanders where Cowan was red carded for a late shoulder charge on Jimmy Gopperth, ironically by Stuart Dickinson? To add a bit of context, Cowan was the Highlanders captain that night and had been complaining all game to Dickinson about Blues' infringements. Back in the days it was far worse than this most of these would've been ignored and they had rucking which means you could stomp on people too even the brawls were more vicious these days you get a card for any little thing

Soccer players could learn a lot from these guys. How to not get butt hurt about a foul being called.

When the flying kick thumbnail incident, might be arguably not the worst red card offense 😅

McRae, the most deliberate and malicious and yet also the one showing the least remorse. The arsehole was smirking as he went off.

Kinda expected behaviour like that given his history playing in rugby league. League in the 90s was big on the 'biff' the crowds basically rewarded a fight and the players played up to that.

Real Bull fight stuff. Crowds even lose their compassion. "You elbow the guy in the head - straight red." Crowd cheer their departing hero as he waves "Thanks fans."

I had seen an interview with a guy who had played in the NFL and then went over and played professional Rugby. He said the hardest hits come from the NFL and the Speed is faster in the NFL. But endurance and overall toughness he'd get to Rugby players.
