- THE STRUGGLES OF WINTER TROUT FISHING!
Winter trout fishing is arguable the most difficult time of the year to catch trout - which is what makes it so good. While most anglers are sitting at home tying flies there are a few who still decide to brave the elements and go fishing. The rewards on a good winter day are always worth the misery, and because so few people are out fishing you can have entire rivers to yourself. This makes it a perfect time to explore your local waterways for some of the biggest fish of the year.
Thanks for watching!
Check out trippin on trout's latest video:
The intro was meant more as a general commentary on winter fishing, I am well aware that the particular day this video was filmed the weather was amazing!! Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed!
The excitement in his voice when he caught that Second Brown just says it all. 👌🏻
Those were some really nice brown trout, and some very skillful streamer fishing on your part. Winter can be tough - but your excellent videography also showed the beauty of the season. Well done!
Thank you!
Hyped up to how tough and brutal winter fishing is. Seemed like pretty good weather to me 😂
The intro was a general statement about winter fishing, not a commentary on the specific day I was fishing 😂 if you think winter weather isn’t brutal then that’s a different conversation.
You from wv ? Where you get that hat man ?
My favorite time to fly fish - the solitude and the stillness of winter fishing, most definitely worth braving the elements and the challenge of catching fish this time of year. Happy New Year - cheers!
Happy New Years to you as well!
I love it when there is snow on all the rocks in the middle, and ice shelves everywhere. Tuck a fly under the ice, you never know.
I'll do about anything to fish without guys fishing so winter is my favorite time of the year to fish love the elements you vs mother nature and when you come through it's awesome tight lines hardman brothers keep em coming!
Since I find your channel I watched all you’re vids keep up buddy you’re doing a great job I am excited for the next vid when I have my license I’m going to fish all day because of you when I see the Natur like that it’s just beautiful 🙌🙌🐟
I try to get out in the winter as much as I can, even more than the summer since it’s always nice to have the stream by yourself even if the fish are less prone to bite. Love the dedication man.
Thank you!
That is an awesome setup. I just got the same rod about a year ago and I fell in love with fishing all over again.
Whats this setup? Rod, reel, line, streamer??
Great vid ,beautiful browns. winter is tough fishing ,but i love the solitude
Awesome video as always guys!! Happy New Year to you and all your friends and cheers to catching hundreds and thousands of quality fish this year! 🔥🔥🔥
this man always drops bangers
No complaints, I always enjoy watching winter fishing videos. Thanks for sharing. Until next time. By the way, gorgeous brown's. 👍👍
Thank you!
@@hardmanfishing I think I won the rod give away, I don't have a Instagram account, what do i need to do?
Great looking water!Excellent video! Thks for taking the time to put it together!
Glad you enjoyed Larry!
I fish winter at 10,000 plus ft elevation and it's cold af but it's always worth it. Love your videos
Thanks for the great video! Nice work and it was insightful as someone who is learning to streamer fish in my local small creek.
Winter is one of my fav times to trout fish!
Nice to see you out fishing.
Fishy, fishy in the brook, you be the captain and I'll be the cook.
I live in northeastern Connecticut. I enjoy trout and salmon fishing in the rivers in the winter and ice fishing for many species.
Looks like a great day on the water man! Beautiful fish! Well done!
Great stuff. The jaws on those trout are huge! Like a swimming head….
Way to go man!! Winter is tough!!! You made it happen!!!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed
Hey Bro .Your first trout is so perfect .It's an authentic wild Atlantic brown trout, my favorite. We have the sames in France i love so much this species. For me the most beautiful species trout .Thanks so much for yours videos mate 💖👍👍
You should go to Washington its great there!
Awesome video! Love your content! Your one of the best gopro fishing channels I watch!
Just had a day of steelhead fishing! I went 0/1 but it was still great!
Absolutely. Big browns sip. And small browns pound the top column.. watched some higher 20in browns sip just a ring at dark.. and then another. Cast let it flow down no indication just a ring set. And omg. 22in . But during the day even in summer temps all the big browns find deep pools n holes n sit tight. Hammer crayfish and ez meals Caddis. Chase minnows. But not like rainbows will slash 6x at it till it hits it. Love your videos bro. Nothing fancy. Just cover good water.
That one fish was super nice! Lots of lovely color on all of them, too. Nice!
Thank you!
Merry Christmas and happy new year.
Tight lines " my friend ".
Yessirr!! Loved the video!
I really enjoy your videos. Keep it up!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed!
Lovin the vidz man.🙂👍 Please keep em comin bro. Happy New Years and peace brutha. ✌😎
Thanks man! Happy New Years to you as well!
You never disappoint. Nice browns!
Thank you!
Love your videos! Makes me miss my old WV home. Curious as to the gear you use. It would be helpful if you went over your setup at the beginning. Thanks for the great content.
Thanks for the info and the vid. I haven't done much streamer fishing yet, look to in the future though.
Nice vid! When they are in the mood to eat streamers there’s almost always going to be some missed eats but I’d mention that a strip set instead of a trout set might have stuck some of those ones you missed! It takes a while to get that muscle memory dialed but goes a long way once the strip set is second nature. Anyways keep up the good work killer video
Awesome video as usual guys
Thank you!
Great video 👍
Good quality trout. Nice video
Thanks!!
I was fishing yesterday here in Owen sound Dec 30 2021. It was - 3c. I caught a 7 lbs female rainbow. Awesome. Caught her on len thompson green glow in the dark 5/8 oz lure
7lbs???
Big long thick girl!!!!!
Nice video. The creek and the fish are beautiful. I'm thinking the water must be cold. But the hard worked paid off.
I’m glad you enjoyed the vid!
Great fish Jon..
Thank you!
Another fantastic Video that had a lot of different scenarios involved. First off were those beautiful Browns but there was also fishing lessons, Stone Hatch, Climate Change 😉, tree snag, and others. Thank you very much for enduring winter weather to provide this fishing video. Also I commend you on your effort of not using the Lord's Name in vain. 👍😊
Climate change is real... went from 65 degrees on Jan 1 to 25 degrees and snowing on Jan 2. It's getting wild out here. Thanks for watching!
Winter fishing is great lol
Здравствуйте👋
Хорошая рыбалка👍👍👍
Смотрел с удовольствием😉
Winter fishing is the best. Got my PB brown, rainbow, and cutty all in icy bitter cold conditions
That's awesome!!
Again another great video, nice browns,2 questions what gear are you using & wit the Korkers Bollo Lace system heard there was a problem freezing, have you had that issue yet ?
I’m in England and our trout season closes from October to mid March.Waiting for the spring to arrive 👍🏻
We have some closures as well.
The Moment, the Adrenalin overcome, 👍👍😏
I would like to "trout fish in the winter" but in France we can't because of rules of the Fishing Federation 😢. I understand it's to preserve the species during reproduction period. In France we're allow to fish trout from midle of March to midle of september.
Indeed, amazing video as usual :D
Come visit the US someday and try your luck man!
@@tlfish1710 I would like to man ;)
Trout fishing isn't open all year round in all places in the USA either. 😒 Most mundane redundant laws you experience..we also experience.
Our season opens tomorrow! Gonna get out next weekend
Nice!
Nice
Just went fishing a few days ago on the edge of Tennessee-north Carolina, caught a 15 inch fat boy rainbow trout, beautiful fish.
That’s awesome!
Dope creek looks like would be epic in summer with a big fat stimmy dropper type rig…. Have a good NY man 🤘
I’m sure it would! I haven’t had the chance to fish it during the summer though. But happy New Years to you as well man!
GOD BLESS! haha you had me there. Imma start saying that when I hook up now. Nice vid, I'm just learning how to fish streamers for browns in the winter, enjoyed watching you have some success. Where are you at if I may ask?
I didn't go out to do any fishing but took my girls out to check out some water and found some very beautiful places to fish here in Pa.
That’s awesome!
So true fly fishing in the winter caused my hands to bleed in school, and still enjoyed it.
Geez…
@@hardmanfishing lol
Awesome area you are fishing. What state are you in? Can you give us some information on the set up you’re using line, leader, rod?
Hi love the video! What rod do you use in the video?
Hey Hardman, whats your go to set up throwing streamers? Rod WT ,fly line Ect...
I wish we could in Vermont. Not much to do until April.
hey happy new years bud im curious what fly lines you use?
Any day is a good day to be on the stream.
No doubt!!
I got a fly rod for the colder months to go adventuring for trout! So far, very mild winter.
Yep same for us. The fishing has also been pretty mild lol
Do you ever use sinking tip for streamers? Thanks for the video!
more like early fall fishing... no offense but you should try to fish the Salmon River in NY in the middle of the winter... with temps below freezing, wind 10+ mph, ice in the rod guides, ice slush in the water... and you swinging flies for winter steelhead :)
Well this particular day wasn’t bad but I’ve had my fair share of iced up guides and ridiculous weather :)
Awesome video! What type of fly line did you use for streamer fishing? I assume a sink tip?
Nope, floating line!
Is there any flies you’d recommend? Individual or a kit? I’m just getting started into this fantastic area of fishing. Fished for years but never fly fishing. Thanks 🙏
Your lucky here in Michigan trout season closes in September
Nice game changer you got there
Yessir!
I love winter time fishing you should come over to Oregon I'll put you on some fish
I'll try to some day for sure! Thanks for watching!
Great video, I'd still love to see you pick up a tenkara rod, especially for the wild Brook trout.
I plan on it! I was actually looking at them the other day
@@hardmanfishing I have 6 and my favorite is the Dragontail Mizuchi. It's a zoom rod and you can fish with it at 3 different lengths. With your UA-cam following Brent Auger might give just send you one?? It would sure be worth sending him a email. It's a great smaller company and they definitely stand behind there products.
That’s about the only time I can fish for trout, is in the winter. Cooler temps is when the steelhead run where I live. There are some native trout streams but when the summers hot and dry, you’ve got to avoid them.
First video I have watched of yours and I love it, have subbed and looking forward to making my way through your other videos.
Just started getting my winter fly fishing flies sorted. What are you guys using this time of the year? I’m in the uk so I’m guessing something different to what we are currently using. Tight lines!
Right now I have a lot of success on bigger dry flies. Lots of hoppers and annual cicadas are showing up. Of course nymphs are working as always. Streamers don’t work too much this time of year because the water is usually lower.
@@hardmanfishing that actually sounds very similar to what we have here, other than I don’t seem to be having much luck with larger flies. We have just had Beatles and flying ants come into play at some locations here so will be giving them a go later at my local. Thanks for the reply. Have a good one buddy.
You gotta try some bead fishing. In washington, where i am right now the bead fishing is unreal for trout, and also really good thru spring. also as a little note Beads are far superior to egg flies so give it a try! not shure if the work well where you are but in spring im its a shure try.
I’ve done it before actually! It’s crazy effective
gets too cold to winter fish here.....everything ice's over .......we cut holes in the ice an jig no casting after dec usually
Great video as well as solid technique!🔥 what’s your rod/reel/line setup if you don’t mind me asking?
Thank you! Rod in this video was a risen 9 foot 5 wt with a sage 5 wt reel. Line is just regular floating line from scientific angler, although I don't remember the exact kind. I use floating line for the smaller creeks and rivers for more control over the streamer
Would you tell us what area of the country you are in? What was the outside temp when you filmed? Thanks
Nice vid! When do you prefer winter streamers and when nymphing?
Streamers almost always will catch a few fish. So I'll typically start with streamers, especially if the water is high. If I can move a few fish then it gives me a good baseline for the day. Nymphs can also work anytime but I prefer lower/clear water.
Hi, really like your vids. Im from the UK. Out of interest are these all wild fish or are they stocked?
They are wild!
Do you use a sinking line or a sinking leader?
Awesome video as always. When will yalls next native video be? Also when will yall announce the contest winner from the previous video.
Thank you! And I’m not sure when the next native video will be, depends on the weather. And January 10th!
the trout season in the UK closes for the winter to give the fish some rest for breeding
I'd love to do some fishing, but with all the rain here in Oregon, I'm not sure how to fish fast, dirty, high water.
I have luck swinging pink in muddy high waters up in lower mainland bc
Hey Jon, I live here in Ga.
and have never used streamers! What setups do you use when streamer fishing?
it depends on what size streamer you use
What streamer patterns are you using?
Looks more like mid to late fall . I was out on the green New Year’s Day …. Icy edges 25 degrees….
Hey john what kind of fly line are you using for chucking streamers? normal floating line or a sinking tip?
Floating line for smaller rivers/creeks. Sinking line for larger rivers
What set up are you using?
Great video, what kind of camera do you use?
Lumix G9 Mirrorless camera
How do you like the boots with the wire laces? I just ordered some, looking for others experiences with them. Are they durable?
They’re amazing! Best purchase I’ve ever made
What weight rod are you using?
Nice WV hat
Thank you!
What state are you in? Would love to come fly fish that state
We don't even have any trout over here in Walla Walla Washington they killed most of or still head and salmon off
Where you using a WF line?
I imagine 3ft+ of snow and temps typically 20 and below are a little different than winter fishing where you live.
Oh I'll have the same issues, it's just been a mild winter so far.
Regarding the fishing style you cast a quarter upstream and then strip it in, right? What's the advantage of that over just swinging it across?
You can do that if you're in larger water. The issue with smaller rivers and streams is if you get up beside or in front of the fish to swing the streamer it may spook them. So typically I'll fish at a 45 degree angle at first and then swing the streamer if that doesn't work
You are making winter streamer fishing look easy. Is casting upstream a key to successful day? Walking upstream doesn't alert upstream trout to your presence.
What weight line and rod do you have
