    The problem with a lot of these battle scenes is there's no weight, no context. Austerlitz, Borodino, Waterloo, we never see the politics behind each battle and why each battle is so important. It undermines the effectiveness of the battle scenes imo, yes they're epic but ultimately they have no emotion or tension.

    I saw the film last week. It was undermined by the emphasis on his relationship with Josephine. Instead, it should have concentrated on the political power struggles and intrigue with the royalists. The action sequences themselves seemed curtailed in parts - the Egyptian bit for example, heralded in the trailer but of little impact - instead, him worrying about the absence of letters from Josephine! His American accent was also annoying. The persistent use of "the English" then sometimes, "the British". The war was with Britain, not England.

    Ridley Scott's Napoleon (2023) was historically inaccurate in the extreme. I understand movies aren't always supposed to be historically accurate, that'd almost be impossible, and I understand that there's dramatic license for the sake of storytelling, but at least a movie should get the big picture more or less right. Napoleon (2023) falls far short of that. Lots of what's depicted in this movie is speculation at best and lots of important events in Napoleon's life were simply left out. And that's besides Joaquin Phoenix's depiction of Napoleon, which makes removes all the graces - especially his charisma - that the real Napoleon had, as a military commander beloved by his troops and as a populist leader beloved by the people of France for most of his life where Napelon was akin to someone like Julius Caesar in terms of popularity among the people (though of course the monarchists and other traditionalists in France and outside of France hated Napoleon and in the end defeated him). Indeed, the entire movie makes it seem like Napoleon was an incel or simp who obsessed over Josephine and who as military commander won as often as he lost, even though in reality Napoleon it was something like 46 out of 60 battles won throughout his life, tied 7 battles, and lost 7 battles. And as Wellington said about Waterloo - it was a close run thing and could've gone either way. Anyway, it's a shame that the movie is so historically inaccurate. The reality of Napoleon is actually far more interesting than Scott's fiction. That said, I've heard there's a 4+ hour director's cut of Napoleon that will be released in the future. I hope this director's cut fixes most of the blatant historical inaccuracies in the movie. I hope it's like the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven which was far better than the theatrical version of Kingdom of Heaven.

    • @sjb3460
      @sjb3460 7 місяців тому +1

      Thanks, I would like to see the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven. I'll look for it. I think, to do Napolean, would require a 4 part 8 or nin hour epic film. People today aren't interested in details, or the back story.
