  • With Winter wearing on, and this injury keeping me off the mountain bike, we decided to have a little fun in the shop. This micro crawler course is built from boxes, plaster, paint, and a variety of fake plants and rocks from the hobby store. Build one of these yourself, and make your basement a lot more entertaining!

If you want to add light weight obstacles, a can of spray foam works wonders. Spray a blob here or there then use a bread knife to carve it. The beauty about spray foam is it is dense, and light (since it's mostly air). Use the high expansion gap filler type.
you can carve ruts into it as well and then paint it up so it looks like mud. Using the water based liquid clear, you could even fill the ruts with glossy clear, when it dries it will look like water.
Just thinking: if you wanted to make a winter section/snow, paint things in white, and off white and use gloss clear to make it slippery.
If you wanted to make a "desert" section, you could use camo paint in tan, get some plastic cactus and it'd be gold jerry, GOLD.
I am just getting into crawling and I might just make one of these.
You could also just screw down your 'mountains" so you can rotate them, or move them around to change it up. When you're laying down the plaster, put down some old grocery bags first so it doesn't stick to your base. Pre-drill the plaster sheets though so they don't split when you put the screw in. Also use pan head screws so it doesn't crack your mountain. You could even use plastic washers to further protect your plaster work.

I think this calls for a suspension log bridge for the mountain bikes! On berm peak!!

welcome back Seth!!! also, that track looks really well made! ( maybe even too good to expect from a person that hasn't even been in the hobby for more than a year, this coming from a kid that's been doing all things rc for 8 years ) hope you can get back on the trails! get well soon

Its a nice start, the good thing about this scale is how easy it is to make tracks using model scenery, you can even use G scale items and build houses with balsa wood. I even use wood coffee stir sticks you can buy really cheap on amazon.

Love the course. You have a lot more patience than I do. I used all natural in my course I think I actually have a grand total of maybe 60 40 lb bags of topsoil on my course amongst branches from pine trees and miscellaneous other yard debris.

Looks awesome. I painted my micro-course with normal grey wall paint. Let it dry for a little time and then used dirt added with a brush. So its not glossy and you need way less spray paint. Spray paint works in my opinion best for adding some highlights...
