I had always assumed that the Alien killed Lambert in a suggestive way to fuel the overriding themes of the film, but that it's primary desire was not sexual in nature and that any violations that may have transpired were not "rape" as in a conscious act of sexual aggression, but simply an act of lethal brutality. The Xenomorph drone is never seen to sexually reproduce in any of its film appearances.

Jdh87 I often feel that the creature is more terrifying if we can’t comprehend the creatures, and that they adapt to their environment, even reproductively.
In that, in a situation against armed opponents, such as the colony on LV426, rapid reproduction was required to overwhelm the armed and potentially dangerous hosts. Thus a Queen was spawned, with extreme intelligence and a militaristic control over its hive.
The creature in alien was able to break down hosts with enzymes to create eggs.
It wouldn’t be a leap to assume that the alien could, like primordial insects, utilise some form of traumatic insemination to reproduce in some unobserved, and terrifying fashion. Perhaps using its tail to directly impregnate female hosts, stabbing them in the abdomen as ancient insects once did. And what would result? Another chestburster, or something else perhaps akin to the backbursters from the lacklustre alien covenant? Or is such how they initialise the eggmorphing process, injecting the aforementioned enzymes to begin breaking down the living host into an embryonic yolk to feed the growing larvae of the facehugger.
These unpredictable and unknowable, alien, methods of reproduction make for much more terrifying creatures than the constantly predictable methodology we “think” they require.

      @carefreejimbob 6 років тому +122

Yes but you have got to remember that this was before alien was a franchise.
We had no knowledge of its reproduction other than the face hugger and the victim becoming an egg.
It's some sick scary way maybe the "rape" was a result of the fact that the alien was born from a human and the humans need to mate. Remember this is 1979 and designed by an artist who is more than a little bit suggestive.

Definitely unnerving, but I don't think the way it's shot (at least the available deleted scene, as cut) quite works. There are moments where it's just blatantly a man in a suit. A physically remarkable man in an aesthetically remarkable suit, but a man in a suit nonetheless.
That may be why it was left out. Because it is such an unnerving image when it's convincing, I can see no reason to cut it, except for those "rubber monster suit" moments.

It is also implied throughout the series that the Aliens enjoy sadistically causing harm to everyone even there own.

I read a theory that Kane had romantic feelings for Lambert. And since the xenomorphs adapt a part of their hosts' DNA, it was suggested that the alien not only did that but also adapted even emotional traits... This could mean that Kane's alien had similar feelings for Lambert. That's why it engaged in a sexual way... Sounds interesting for sure.

Wow. I recently ran across Lambert being intersex (male to female) and now your theory... That definitely makes for a very interesting discussion. The alien itself is hermaphroditic, which is a intersex condition as well. The alien was very interested in reproducing, and without an egg layer or queen around, was possibly searching for an alternative means. I haven't read any of the comics, but based on some of Alien Theory's videos involving the hive on the alien's home planet they have options, including using female hosts from other species. Alien 3 also demonstrates the interspecies reproduction involving the queen alien and the male hosts. I'm assuming their sperm is what impegnated the queen with the newborn. Of course, Lambert, having had MTF reassignment surgery, might not have a uterus, ovaries required for pregnancy but it is a possibility. Yes, today they can transplant those organs into a person, and I imagine that would still be available in the timeline of Alien. Since the alien did kill her, I'm assuming that 1) she did not have the ability to become pregnant; 2) it killed her by accident during impregnation; 3) it killed her on purpose after violating her. All theories of course, which can carry the story in multiple directions.

I actually did a blog about this subject on Xenopedia and honestly, I don't think Lambert was reailly "Raped", Xenomorphs can detect pheromones from their prey and other Xenomorphs, and the scent of their prey's fear when confronted may determine the behavior and hostility of Xenomorphs when they attack. When a Xenomorph senses that their victims are terrified, they may perform excruciating, bloody kills while cleaner, faster kills take place when the prey either doesn't notice the Xenomorph or is less aware of its presence. I also just so happen to know that while playing specimen 6 in AVP3 (2010), one of 6's Attacks/kills involves shoving her speared tail up your victims asses and the spear tail exits the mouth, so with that, I can finally conclude that Lambert, given the position that she was in, was giving off alot of fear and the Alien, sensing that fear, kills her in an excruciating way by shoving It's speared tail up Lambert's Vigina and slowly up her mouth, where doing so, lifted her body upwards and the collar of her shirt got caught on the chains and her cowboy boots fell off. And because the Alien's tail was making its way up Lambert's mouth slowly, Lambert felt every agonizing pain going up her body, which would explain all the screaming. The Alien then runs off leaving behind the bodies of Parker & Lambert. But hey, that's just what I think happened to Lambert personally -\_( "/ )_/- I could also just be bias as I view Xenomorphs as All female even though I know they're asexual, but still, I really don't think lambert was "Violated" so much as I think she was just killed in slow and painful way because of the fear she gave of... But again, that's just what I think happened Personally

i always figured it being a lone xeno and the fact that they wanted a scene in the end of the movie with the xeno watching Ripley behind the glass as she puts on the suit like it was studying her. and the part of it watching the cat in the case, that it was trying to figure out everything around it. seeing whats what and with lambert just standing there it had more time get a good look at her and trying to figure what she was. thus no clothes as probably removing them to figure out what the hell she is and clothes aren't part of the creature and just killed her in the process with probing like you said.

Here's my hot take of the day: Alien is scarier for adults than it is for kids. To a kid this is just a horrible monster killing people. Lambert's death exemplifies what's so beautifully horrific about the first film; the most awful, horrifying things in this story are left unexplained. The scene with Ripley running down the hall, finding the corpses of her teammates and reacting, was beautifully ambiguous. With just a small glimpse of the corpses, we see it all in Ripley's face--what could elicit this level of horror? Whether by design or circumstance, whatever the hell was happening to Lambert was left completely unexplained so in a sense Ridley Scott was employing the Val Lewton technique of horror. Leaving it up to our imaginations was so much more awful than explaining it to death. And I'm certain that this would not be allowed to play out the same way today; modern horror is so dumbed down, so played to the lowest common denominator (I'm looking at you, "The Conjuring") that studios would never allow this level of ambiguity to remain intact in a modern release.

Lambert's scream was one of the first things heard by the emerging fleshy alien. Does it possibly recognize her? Are there identifyable electro-bio waves given off by mammals that allows the aliens to distinguish?

I personally think it put it's tail inside of her. It's heavily implicated both by the director and the film itself. You can actually hear Lambert breathing like she is in lamas class before she really starts screaming. Considering how much HR Giger and Ridley Scott fought for many of the images of Giger's work on the film to actually make it into the film I would have to say that a full on shikibob rape/murder would have been too much over the top for the studio and the censors to take. So all you see of Lambert is her naked legs dangling and dripping blood from unseen wounds. Subtle and

    • @Y2Kr4SHM4N
      @Y2Kr4SHM4N 6 років тому +14

Anthony Leckie Aliens doesn’t denote them to mere bugs. They are akin to commandos with “shock” and “breach” tactics lead by a queen that perhaps communicates via electromagnetic means and pheromones. We have observed her to be extremely intelligent. And when combined with the aliens original methodology for reproduction, via egg morphing, we witness that this is a species that adapts its reproductive strategies to its environment and the threats observed within. Queens whereby immediate large numbers are required, something else when this is not the case.
Ala Alien Isolation, whereby a single creature decimated the Sevastopol station of that series entry, then goes on to reproduce via egg morphing. Perhaps there was a queen that eventuates in that nest. Perhaps the hapless souls of Sevastopol all became either eggs or reproductive fodder for the facehuggers within them.
No mere insectoids. Something... unpredictable and unknowable like the amorphous lifeform in The Thing. We think we have an idea of what it is they’re doing, when in actuality we don’t have the foggiest idea.
That’s when the Alien franchise was at its best. That was the original concept. The audience shouldn’t know what it’s going to do or become next.

  • @CjJeff

In the Alien3 novelization, you've mentioned, there's an exact descripion of Ripley's nightmare being raped by Alien. A nightmare is being worse because (as the author writes) in the cryosleep, human body significally slows down it's processes, so dreaming a nightmare can take a months or years... She later expains to Dillon that embrion of the alien queen is different, so it needs a different "enviroment" to grow. So... Lamber could have been raped by Alien as well. It seems to be a common behavior for that species, however we know nothing about it from Aliens. Neither the film, neither novelization. Good work as usual my friend.

Like the idea that this is the first female, the alien encounters. Whether it notices through different pheromones, or not , I’m not sure, the idea that it wants to ‘investigate’ this different human, but ultimately discards her when it realises, she cannot reproduce, is particularly brutal. You've brilliantly covered all the angles here in this video . But even before UA-cam came along, I always believed the alien raped & killed Lambert. There are sexual undertones everywhere because the whole movie was born out of an idea of an alien screwing an astronaut, which happens via the facehugger effectively raping Kane to reproduce & violently gives birth from him, there are phallic symbols all over the alien itself, its head shape & inner jaw, Lambert is the first woman it attacks but studies her intensely first, the fact that she's transgender may intrigue it, the tail seemingly venturing into her genital area, the implied sexual grunts, presumably naked with blood running down her legs. It all spelt rape to me. Plus a monstrous alien vaginally raping a human woman on screen would cause incredible furore even today, much less in 1979, so no wonder they did it off screen.

I think the original idea during primary photography was the alien violently tried to force her into an air duct and was only partially successful. There may have been for instance a snag or other similar problem. The sequence in my head is: impale, drag to vent in the wall, pull her partially through, pelvis gets stuck (perhaps the vent prematurely closes), and the alien either rips her torso off due to it’s strength or then head bites her. The dangling legs are what remains visible out of camera. The alien can’t easily get back to the scene because the vent is blocked.
I favour this over the rape theory because it’s more consistent with the Alien’s goals. At this point in the overall production and cannon the crew’s organic matter is used to produce more eggs (like the derelict -- “I wonder what happened to the rest of the crew”). Live or dead doesn’t seem to matter as in the case of Brett vs Dallas. It would make sense to eventually use both Parker’s and Lambert’s bodies. Also the stills clearly show that they wanted to convey lambert hanging or dangling from something.
Alien isolation tries to represent this with lambert bent backward over a crate but this is not consistent with the film footage because of the way her feet are dangling.
My two cents and I think there are many ways to interpret this scene. I’m glad Rawlings and Ridley left it ambiguous and suggestive. What you don’t see off camera is truly horrifying.
As a side note, I definitely think they made the right choice in rejecting the “dying of fright idea.” The alien would tear that locker door off in seconds.

Thorsteinn Gislason But what if the tail is the reproductive element; both functional as a stinger that injects an incapacitating agent into a host, and a reproductive agent, that introduces the enzymes for the process fans refer to as egg morphing. Or something worse again.
I would love to see the creatures have another agent in their hierarchy, something akin to the backbursters’ of Covenant that somehow further the reproductive fitness of the hive. Created by manner of traumatic insemination as is hinted and implied by the horrific manner of Lambert’s death.
Ie, the action figure company Neca, released a white drone that was to serve in the hive as an egg handler, and instead of a secondary jaw, it had a phallic proboscis that perhaps secreted the material that lined the hive, or served some reproductive method like the facehuggers.
When creative restraint is exercised, but the creatures expanded upon, in dangerous and slightly sexually suggestive manners, and the creatures not entirely predictable, alien becomes its most... alien. And frightening. Like the eponymous creature from the Thing. You don’t know what it’s going to do next, how it’s going to brutally reproduce with its hosts, or even what specific form may result from this process. Making it truly the top of the evolutionary food chain, and that no matter what approach you take to eradicate it, it will quickly adapt with a new methology that will eventually catch you unawares, and have you gasping “kill me” as some nasty, indescribable metamorphosis occurs within in you, or of you.

As you might know, in Sigourney Weaver’s screen test, the cocooned Dallas tells Ripley that “… it ATE Lambert.” When I saw the movie in 1979, I (and most) assumed that the creature took Lambert somewhere through the ducts. It also stated this in the original novelization by Alan Dean Foster.

You get to see Lambert's dead body in Alien Isolation: Last Survivor. She still has clothes on and it's not as bad as you can imagine. As the game is considered semi-canon, would have been nice if you included that.

I wanted to mention that but couldn't fit it in with the flow of the script for this video unfortunately. Similarly to Hudson showing up in A:CM, it could either be taken as fitting with the film's continuity, or as an Easter Egg. Though I guess the same could be said of the dossier explaining Lambert's sex, too.

I interpreted the Alien Isolation scene of seeing her body not like you see it in the movie strictly being that something that potentially "sexual" wouldn't make it into a game like that. Though violent, the game doesn't have nudity like that...
Plus, I don't think Alien Isolation's missions from the original movie are really canon...

    • @haydendutton6916

The developers of Alien Isolation have strictly said that the events of Last Survivor are not canon however their depiction of Lambert's corpse in the mission was in support of the violation theory and that they believe she was raped by the Xenomorph. Reviews I read by critics also seem to have taken it that way when they discussed the Lambert sequence in Last Survivor, when I personally saw it I thought it was chilling and despite her having clothes on (they didn't include nudity for the sake of keeping it MA) the wounds when you examine her clearly depict it.

Isn't it nutty that a movie from 1979 and this particular death scene is still so analyzed and talked about with the highest regard? Alien is an absolute masterclass of how to do Sci-Fi horror. Every single piece of detail in this film is utilised to compliment the themes illustrated throughout and this scene is just another one of those moments. The way it was shot and its implications are masterful and it's very hard to ignore which is why when people discuss this scene regardless of where you stand on it you have to give it applause for still making us talk about it today and for still being a truly effective piece of horror far superior to the modern jump-scare tactics and predictable scares plaguing horror films today. Much praise to Ridley Scott and H.R Giger

Of all the iterations mentioned here, my favourite is that the Xeno tried to procreate with Lambert by having sexual intercourse with her, but once it realized that she didn't have a proper female reproductive system, it killed her, because any humanoid on the ship was a potential threat.
And then it didn't try to kill or try to reproduce with Ripley at the end of the movie because it knew she was its only chance for Survival. It needed a human pilot to maintain and navigate the ship. Impregnating her would potentially kill her during the birthing process.

Xeno reproduction at that time was by turning people into eggs, which was CUT from the theatrical release and wasn't known until the Directors Cut came out later. Alien is a fetish of body horror, the purpose of showing what they did, in the way they did, is to let the imagination do unspeakable things, it saves a lot of money and makes for better art.
The Xeno was always a perversion of sexual desire, so of course the tail goes in at the bottom and out through the mouth. Is it playing like a cat? Is it sadistic?
The triumph of the movie is the conversation it generates 40+ years after it was made. Few movies can claim that.

@@wrallpaul66 Did the person that made the video use some photoshop shenannigans to enhance the image? That scene is Lamberts photo with some very blurred streaming text which the actor's stand in front of for most of the scene. The audience isn't mean to read it, I wouldn't be surprised, if genuine, that it wasn't a prank by the production team or they just screwed up.
Anyone claiming this movie for todays socio-political activism is deluding themselves. Back in the 70's-80's people couldn't even bring themselves to say Homosexual, let alone champion Body Dismorphia, and fought to keep the practice illegal and quite prepared to let 'the gays' die back in the AIDS pandemic.
Ridley Scott did not make a movie that under 0.1% of the population could watch 40+ years later and say 'aaaahhh wink wink' he's not that kind of man, or director, never was, or ever made any claim to be.
The tail wraps around the characters leg deliberately in a way that makes everyone squeamish, then leaves you guessing while Ripley rushes to save her friends to the sound of their screaming. There is simply no need to try and interpret the killing.

I don’t think the Alien had any sexual inclinations towards Lambert .. It just sees another host for the continuation of its species , whether to make eggs , or to breed Face huggers .. I imagine , like worker Bees , it was providing for the continuation of its species .. as for the tail , we know from Bishops demise , and the Queens attack on Ripley in the power loader , the tail was a stabbing weapon .. and also it’s able to secure the victim by wrapping its tail around its “ Prey “ and moving in for the “ Coup de grâce “ with a head strike with its extendable jaw ..

He said that part ended up being cut because it was too gory. I can’t remember exactly which magazine( Penthouse or Hustler, maybe) as this was 1980 or so, and I was just a kid. He said that part “ended up on the cutting room floor).

If the Xeno really did try to impregnate her, wouldn't she need to live through the encounter so the alien inside her could survive? That's why Ripley wasn't killed in Alien 3 and what what was later done in Aliens as well. The 'cocooning' process made more sense but since that part was ultimately cut, I think Scott edited the film in a way to show how the Xeno's could reproduce... at least in theory but it still wouldn't answer my question of how it could survive through a dead host.

This is the only YT thread where, after viewing the videos, I cannot wait to read the comments, which speaks volumes to the creative and intellectual levels on display here. Fantastic channel!
This Xeno definitely seems to possess some personality traits, whether through observation or behavioral growth. Like curiosity, such as when it's watching Lambert, Brett, Jonesy, or even Ripley. Or, maybe, a bit of cockiness, as when it displays its various mouth weapons for Ripley during the shuttle showdown buildup. And definitely not out of the realm of possibility is a bit of the inexperienced sexual fumbling of a relative "youngster."
Trying your best to remove the nearly impossible-to-film "crab walk" from your mind, focus on what it's doing here: in what must feel like a "submissive" position, sensing a possible "mate" and even...erecting its tail to a higher degree to follow and understand new instincts, drives, and possibly waiting for a response in kind. And THEN, when Lambert's mind is totally unable to cope, Big Chap stands but does not strike, almost wanting to (and I know this is most likely far too human) continue its assessment/courting (two extremes) of this different specimen. It doesn't even begin to reveal its layered mouth weaponry, choosing instead to almost >smile< in a fashion that seems tame (but certainly feels otherwise to us, and as Ridley Scott spoke to a disappointed Veronica Cartwright after she found that she was being cast as Lambert, paraphrased, "Lambert is the emotional content of the audience").
I've always felt that this Xeno, like any other newborn creature, must still learn at least some of the social customs of its new home, even while the unstoppable operations of instinct and speed of learning drive forward. Along with Scott stating, "Yes, this was a violation-type death," there is no other reasonable conclusion. The horrible death sounds from Lambert leave a lot to the imagination, except for one clear section, and most here would agree with what that is. Also, because Lambert can scream functionally at the end, this reveals that her head/throat would be intact, which causes my conclusion to be "death from fear/fright due to violative attack."
(Just typing this comment made me uncomfortable. However, great movies cause great depths of thought to be examined. Also, someone here (?) mentioned Parker "whimpering" at some point in this scene. I've never seen or heard anything like "whimpering" from Parker. FTM, I'm still trying to figure out what he says directly before the Xeno strikes his forehead!)

I dont think that the alien could literally rape Lambert. The Xenomorphs reproduce quite differently from humans. Xenomorph Drone/Warrior doesn't have a penis or any kind of human-like reproducing organ. And the creature certainly can't feel any kind of sexual desire (especially towards humans) that would make it want to rape it's victims.
Most likely the alien just killed Lambert in a very brutal way (like piercing and ripping her body with it's tail). While you say this is a rape-like kill, it is definitely NOT a literal rape.
The only Xenomorph subspecies that can "rape" people are the facehuggers.

Too much "fan fiction" in people's ideas on it violating her, the same people get off on the idea of they themselves being taken by a facehugger and dying as a result. If the xeno could sense the difference between male and females, gender reassignment wouldn't confuse it because it most likely could sense the differences on another level, despite the outward appearance. It would be able to tell if Lambert had the proper biology to reproduce. As a species, we tend to over-sexualize and anthropomorphize everything and often times it causes us to want something that isn't there.

  • @sillyrabbit734

    After watching all the various alien incarnations, I've come up with this personal theory;
You have a Queen, laying eggs, when there's a queen. When a drone's alone, it tries ANYTHING to procreate, (that's it's only purpose when it's by itself separated from a queen) and since it's birth host was human, and it has human dna incorporated within it, why would it not attempt to violate Lambert?
The alien takes on the characteristics of each host to some extent, perhaps these characteristics get past along, (including ones that involve procreation) from one generation to the next - from every host it's race has encountered - literally giving it limitless ways to procreate.
You have egg morphing one moment - then you have the predalien implanting eggs down the throat of pregnant women the next. When there's a queen, it's back to egg laying.
Each time, adding something to the species, ensuring the next generation's survival.
    BTW - LOVE your channel.

Well it's also been added that the predalien in AVP 2 was actually a young queen. Young queen xenomorphs have the ability to implant embryos like that in order to establish a hive quickly. Had she had a longer life she would have grown that huge egg sac and started laying eggs.
