I've been to many churches just like that and I'm still atheist. I have a blast. Love the music, love the atmosphere, love the people, just don't buy the supernatural is all.
What a great film. Awesome music, unforgettable one liners and car chases. Imagine what it would cost to assemble a cast half as good as in this in 2020. Let alone try and accommodate the massive egos prevalent today. This is one film/soundtrack you can confidently say that "they don't make them like this any more" *sigh*
i was very fortunate when i was younger i had a lady who took acre of me after school betsy she was a great black woman i miss her alot she used to take me with her to church and at first i was scared 8 yearold white girl and yes it was a all black church and i was the only white person there ,they made me feel welcome much more than a all white church ,and the truth be told i loved it there is so much more joy and love spoken about god and jesus the singing is not somber . continued
I remember when churches where like that and ppll couldn't wait to go to church on Sundays...My church wasn't like that but I had visited many that were...with ppl feeling the spirit that they were rolling down the isles..I never saw anything like that...I had wished that my church was that active..I LOVED IT..MEMORIES!
Fact is..without Gospel Music....No Blues. No R&B. No Rock & Roll....It is the core of American Classical music...ALL of the great Blues and R&B singers come from the church. BTW, I think it's hilarious how Jake's hat stays on while doing those flips...and those dancing leg kicks while catching the spirit..he was praising like a Brother for real LOL..Jake had some soul..This scene takes me back to being a kid and watching everyone including my mom catch The Ghost. LOL!
No joke, but I've been in church services like this. A good hot spirit-filled service where the Presence of God is, is just like this -- minus the back-hadsprings and the trampoline layouts...in some churches, this just a regular Sunday or Tuesday night...
What in the WORLD is James Brown sayiiiing?!? Lol! Seriously, great clip. So many greats in this movie. RIP Nick Simpson. Thumbs up if Talib Kweli sent you here!!!
DO YOU SEE THE LIGHT ?!?! The band! DO YOU SEE THE LIGHT ?!?! THE BAND !! HAVE YOU SEEN THE LIGHT ?!?! YES!!! I really like this movie, i have seen it about 15 times or more!! R.I.P. James Brown and John Belushi
man. that film changed my life literally, when i first saw it being like 9 years old. the very first contact with blues music... it's the kind of a movie every father should watch with his son
Not seen this movie again for about 10 years. This scene is sooo uplifting. Just imagine if church was really like this! Why can't they? They would be overflowing!! This film is in my all time top ten.....
Is this why the European tourist in NYC visit Harlem on Sunday mornings? Lol. I love this scene. It always puts me in a good mood. The only thing they were missing were the ushers with the sheets!
Was just thinking that. My guess is that music and dance were a big part of black life during slavery to get them through that harsh time. But its created dance and blues which are indigenous to the US. I might be wrong about this but i suspect im not.
James Brown has been doing that slide since I was a kid. ( That was a VERY LONG time ago). If you watch some of his old concert films of him you can see him glide across a stage.
I remember watching this when I was stoned & not being able to get over how James Brown thought he saw religious light but Jake just had a burst of inspiration, not spiritual awakening. I was like "oh my god I can see a meaning no one else can!!"
I am a Black Woman and I can honestly say that a Parody is based on the Truth. It is amazing to me how this Scene REALLY RESEMBLES the Traditional Black Church. James Brown is perfect as the Charismatic Preacher humming, shouting, and doing the "HOLY SLIDE" (walking/ gliding on water like Jesus) and so forth. I also noticed all the minor details that they got CORRECT, like for instance the Choir Director leading the Band and Choir.)
Church kinda sort of use to be this live when I was younger. Everybody alwayz had the spirit in 'em. There was alwayz that older woman hollering, crying, and catching the Holy Ghost in the front row or in the choir stands. I don't see her anymore. Very rarely when you go to church nowadayz will see people live like this.
Yeah, this iz my favorite scene of the movie. I remember seeing this movie when I was jiive young. I was convinced that James Brown use to be a preacher in a past life. He's too authentic with his performance as a preacher in this film.
i REMEMBER AS A LITTLE GIRL GOING TO A CHURCH LIKE THIS...A NEIGHBOR HAD TAKEN ME AND I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO MAKE OF IT...SEEING PPL ROLLING DOWN THE ISLES AND JUMPING UP AND DOWN...BUT IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST CHURCH EXPERIENCES I HAVE EVER HAD...i RMEMBER WISHING THAT MY CHURCH WAS LIKE THAT!.... :D...MEMORIES... :D
One of the best scenes in the movie! I love how they have the same effects on Jake as Obi-Wan has in Star Wars, when he's a ghost! It just works so well!
that organist yet lives and still playes in G all the time he playes for a church in lancaster Ca near los angeles ca he can tear up a organ the man is about 70 years old
The song is called: THE OLD LANDMARK. I know everything about this film as i have watched it over 100 times when i was younger. SAD i know but didnt you have a favourite film when you were younger. I know it so well in fact i nearly know every word to it. Ha Ha
Let us all (all go back), to the old (old landmark) repeat... He will (Hear us), and be (Near us) We'll be (given), bread from (heaven) Tell the (story), of his (glory) It will (warn me), it will (turn me) Common (meter), yes they're (sweeter) When you stop (singing), they'll keep (ringing) Sons and (daughters), dipped in the (water) Coming out (shouting, shouting, shouting, shouting, shouting, shouting, shouting, shouting in the service of the Lord)
We just visited this very church, Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church of South Chicago, on 91st Street. They now have blue carpeting. Notice the stained glass windows. They were destroyed in a fire several years ago...but not by the fire itself. They were destoyed by the firefighters trying to put out the blaze. All that remains of the original windows are the very top part that is not connected to the main part of the window.
I just noticed the dude that takes a low bow when he stands back up he does the whole Mmm-Hmmm thing with his hand! XD I wanna watch this movie in whole again. I haven't seen it in like 10 years... :*(
Loved this movie can't belive I forgot JB was in it! Fantastic! James Brown was and for ever will be the Godfather/KING OF SOUL! Funny how you have the Hebrew subtitles from the movie channel YES! 4, lol :)
(There is also always someone on the Guitar- Bass, Piano & Drums to back up/ follow along with what the Preacher is saying along with the Congregation shouting "Amen" and "That's right" or "Come on Now" etc) I also noticed how most of the women wore gloves and Hats for their "HOLY COVERING", the FANS in each hand that they all carried because you KNOW it gets HOT in there with all the dancing going on!! I know I always carry my Fan and Handkerchief with me when I go to the Church House!
And the sweet irony of all this is that...well... I have heard so many try to to this number, and this is the ONLY version I ever heard that got it right!
I'm not religious but I'd go to the James Brown church.
I hope John is partying like this in heaven. Gone but not forgotten 30 years today. RIP
If church was like this there wouldn't be a single atheist left in the world.
I've been to many churches just like that and I'm still atheist. I have a blast. Love the music, love the atmosphere, love the people, just don't buy the supernatural is all.
AMEN!!!
I swear, this scene has so much damn power and energy. It is one of the greatest musical sequences in a movie ever filmed.
Now this is OLD SCHOOL gospel! This is truly one of the great dance sequences in all of film! And James Brown is really feeling the spirit!
One of my favorite scene in this movie. Nobody can sing this song better than James
Brown.
i swear, i would go to church every weekend if it was like this. For reallssss though... every weekend.
What a great film.
Awesome music, unforgettable one liners and car chases.
Imagine what it would cost to assemble a cast half as good as in this in 2020.

All church services should be like this. I can guarantee that nobody falls asleep in a service like this!
If I had a church like this within a hundred miles of my home, I'd be there every Sunday and any other day!!!!
Thats some good church right there, make you want to get your shout on
This is such an epic scene from an epic movie. Watch how James is just sliding on the stage...his moves are awesome.
Thanks for posting this!!
damn, if James Brown was alive and he led my church, forget Sundays, I'd be there every day of the week!
I am convinced that when I get o heaven there will be a choir very similar to this praising the Lord and I am gonna love it.
great music, wonderful dancing and the blues brothers steps fit in, but I'm not sure why
If I could find a church that was like this, I would go every single Sunday!
My two year old loves this. He starts spinning around with his hands up in the air whenever I play this.
Terrence Aybar oh lawd

1:35... John Belushi encompasses all that is going on in this scene. He was an ABSOLUTE comedic genius. I really regret him passing so soon.
Give me an old school gospel church any old time. The spirit moves you!
If my church were like this, I would go every week!
No joke, but I've been in church services like this. A good hot spirit-filled service where the Presence of God is, is just like this -- minus the back-hadsprings and the trampoline layouts...in some churches, this just a regular Sunday or Tuesday night...
Mannn I Dont Know WHO is Playing that Organ But hes Killing, Listening to THIS here makes me wanna get up and dance in the Spirit..
this movie had the most legendary music moguls ever...and it made the movie work perfectly
a good southern baptist church will absolutely make you get up and wanna dance- greatest part of the movie

Everytime i hear that song,i try to dance like Belushi:)) R.I.P John. Greatest musical ever!!! I SEE THE LIGHT!!!!
man. that film changed my life literally, when i first saw it being like 9 years old. the very first contact with blues music... it's the kind of a movie every father should watch with his son

Is this why the European tourist in NYC visit Harlem on Sunday mornings? Lol. I love this scene. It always puts me in a good mood. The only thing they were missing were the ushers with the sheets!
Great movie, great music but James Brown is the greatest artist ever!
I think James Brown was putting it to the test and yeah, I think he definitely won.
My childhood favorite movie! :D
HALLELUJAH! Always wished our church would do this lol...*dancing*
You gotta love the black community church spirit.
GoregeousLey i'm anche atheist, but i think that it's better than classical ""White"" churces
You really have to experience it in person to get the holy ghost in you
So sad that it's been smothered by the vulgarity of gang rap, and criminal culture.
Was just thinking that. My guess is that music and dance were a big part of black life during slavery to get them through that harsh time. But its created dance and blues which are indigenous to the US. I might be wrong about this but i suspect im not.
Emperor Vitiate, shame that the old stuff is gone, and all that sitts in it's place is gang rap.
If I was God, I would be pleased by this worship.
now this is gospel
first saw this movie at 10, it truly changed my life :)
thanks for posting,peace out
James Brown has been doing that slide since I was a kid. ( That was a VERY LONG time ago). If you watch some of his old concert films of him you can see him glide across a stage.
this scene is the ultimate tribute to the genius of James Brown.John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd.
Are baptist churches really like this? The whole dancing and singing. If they are I am totally gonna go some time. It looks like a blast.
I remember watching this when I was stoned & not being able to get over how James Brown thought he saw religious light but Jake just had a burst of inspiration, not spiritual awakening. I was like "oh my god I can see a meaning no one else can!!"
OMG CHAKA KHAN'S IN THE CHOIR!!!!! I've watched this movie THOUSANDS of times&I've never seen her til now!

you are right...man they really feel the spirit of the lord in that place
If every church was like this i would attend every damn day.
Wow, just listening to that organ makes me wanna shout and dance.
One of the best scenes in the movie! I love how they have the same effects on Jake as Obi-Wan has in Star Wars, when he's a ghost! It just works so well!
Hope you truly experienced the light. Continued RIP John. 30 years ago on this day.
And to think that the Late-GREAT James Brown demanded that they do this scene on ONE take minus the high-flying part. Forever love this movie!
This is some funny ish! Whew! Holy Ghost on steroids!! When dude flips in the air with the fan still in his hand...that did it for me!!!!
Rest in peace James Brown, and I hope when it is my time to reach the pearly gates, you will be there singing my way through.
I frikken love the slide james brown does...i wanna learn to do that
What a classic scene! Like! Favorite! And I'm saving it to my playlists! Thanks for posting it!
that organist yet lives and still playes in G all the time he playes for a church in lancaster Ca near los angeles ca he can tear up a organ the man is about 70 years old
if james brown was my pastor i would never wanna leave
Can't say I go to church, but if James Brown was delivering the sermon I would go.
The song is called: THE OLD LANDMARK.

I know it so well in fact i nearly know every word to it. Ha Ha
Just loving this and truly it one of the greatest movies EVER! :D
"WHAT LIGHT?" one of the greatest movie scenes EVER!!!
If churches were like this then I'm start going to one again...and the question should be "do you see the light?"
Let us all (all go back), to the old (old landmark) repeat...
He will (Hear us), and be (Near us)
We'll be (given), bread from (heaven)
Tell the (story), of his (glory)
It will (warn me), it will (turn me)
Common (meter), yes they're (sweeter)
When you stop (singing), they'll keep (ringing)
Sons and (daughters), dipped in the (water)
Coming out (shouting, shouting, shouting, shouting, shouting, shouting, shouting, shouting in the service of the Lord)

I remember seeing this movie before my family went to church once. I was SOoo disappointed.
Probably my most favorite part in the movie!
OMG! The best i´ve ever seen on youtube! Jesus!
For bieng a soul man James Brown can really tear this song up.
one of the BEST movies ever made
James Brown's finest moment in film!!!!!!! HIGBA!!!!
I just noticed the dude that takes a low bow when he stands back up he does the whole Mmm-Hmmm thing with his hand! XD
I wanna watch this movie in whole again. I haven't seen it in like 10 years... :*(
I believe that choir director is a real choir director for Dr. Bobby Jones. My favorite part of this movie.
thats what all chruches should be. my kinda music!
Epic scene! Jake is so excited XD
I love the funny jig Elwood does after he says "And God bless the United States of America"
Loved this movie can't belive I forgot JB was in it! Fantastic! James Brown was and for ever will be the Godfather/KING OF SOUL!
Funny how you have the Hebrew subtitles from the movie channel YES! 4, lol :)
long live the blus brothers they may be gone but their muisic will live on.
That bass player is slick and smooth my friends!
this is how to worship, not stand, talk, quote and sing some slow songs, but praise, and dance and be happy
The beginning of the entire scene is missing!
"I heard a disturbing sound"
It's so exciting when he goes from speaking the word to praising the lord!
i imagine john and james do this every day RIP GUYS
(There is also always someone on the Guitar- Bass, Piano & Drums to back up/ follow along with what the Preacher is saying along with the Congregation shouting "Amen" and "That's right" or "Come on Now" etc) I also noticed how most of the women wore gloves and Hats for their "HOLY COVERING", the FANS in each hand that they all carried because you KNOW it gets HOT in there with all the dancing going on!! I know I always carry my Fan and Handkerchief with me when I go to the Church House!
I am tempted to do this at my church!
If church was more like this, you would find me there more often
Sometimes I wish church could be like this.
Great movie...greats songs...greats singers...greats actors....WOW !!
And the sweet irony of all this is that...well... I have heard so many try to to this number, and this is the ONLY version I ever heard that got it right!
