  • A song about fear, childhood and the changing of seasons, the tender 'Michicant' featured not only the achingly beautiful falsetto of Bon Iver but also a breathtaking sax solo from bassist Michael Lewis. A stunning highlight from their world premiere performances of 'Cercle' at Sydney Opera House as part of Vivid LIVE festival.
Now entering its eighth year, Vivid LIVE is a two-week celebration of ambitious contemporary music at Sydney Opera House and is part of Vivid Sydney, the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas.

I have been listening to Bon Iver for years, and I've been contemplating what about them I am so drawn to. In this video, it came to me. Each person in the band doesn't just compose notes, doesn't just add their part to the song. They have come to terms with how they feel in the moment that they are in. Nostalgia makes you feel strongly as you once did in the past, Bon Iver's music allows you to genuinely experience your feelings in the here and now. It may evoke past feelings, but you are feeling them again, right now. So much of life wants you to look to the future or remember the past. When I listen to this music, I am experiencing life in the now.

    Lyrics:
    I was unafraid, I was a boy, I was a tender age
Melic in the naked, knew a lake and drew the lofts for the page
Hurdle all the waitings up, know it wasn't wedded love, why?
Four long minutes in and it was over, it'd all be back
And the frost took up the eyes
    Pressed against the pane
Could see the veins and there was poison out
Resting in a raze, the inner claims I hadn't breadth to shake
Searching for an inner clout, may not take another bout, why?
Honey in the hale could fill the pales of loving less with vain
Hon', it wasn't yet the spring
Aiming and it sunk and we were drunk and we had fleshed it out
Nose up in the globes, you never know if you are passing out
No, it wasn't maiden-up, the falling or the faded luck, why?
Hung up in the ivory, both were climbing for a finer cause
Love can hardly leave the room
    With your heart

I was going to go to this live, Justin has been an idol of mine for so long. His music has helped me to feel again when I didn't feel like I could and I feel such a deep connection with it. I was on the bus home one night and I decided to look up his name and when it said he was performing in Sydney only a few days from then I was so excited, he was actually coming to Australia, this was my chance. I was going to book a ticket but life and my own petty excuses got in the way and before I knew it my chance was gone. I've never, ever regretted something in my life so much. Please come back to Australia again soon Justin. I need to see you live, I need too. Otherwise I will take the pain and regret to my grave.

Lifes short, why wait for what may never happen. If you can, jump on a plane and go to them. If you can't. then make it so you can. Done it before for other artists and never regretted it.

Jordan Santone you’re not alone man, I did the same thing recently with a Conor Oberst show and regret it though not at all on the same scale as I would regret missing a Bon Iver show. Be strong, my friend!

    I was unafraid, I was a boy, I was a tender age
Melic in the naked, knew a lake and drew the lofts for page
Hurdle all the waitings up, know it wasn't wedded love
4 long minutes end and it was over it'd all be back
And the frost took up the eyes
Pressed against the pane could see the veins and there was poison out
Resting in a raze the inner claims I hadn't breadth to shake
Searching for an inner clout, may not take another bout
Honey in the hale could fill the pales of loving less with vain
Hon, it wasn't yet the spring
Aiming and it sunk and we were drunk and we had fleshed it out
Nose up in the globes, you never know if you are passing out
No it wasn't maiden-up, the falling or the faded luck
Hung up in the ivory, both were climbing for a finer cause
Love can hardly leave the room
    With your heart

Hey Michael, I understand, I really do. For me its much easier to get his lyrics without listening with music,
at least at first. I read somewhere that Vernon creates a melody first and then fits the lyrics to the rhythm.
Don't know if I believe that or not because it seems to be the opposite to me at least.
I've rarely read such beautiful and powerful poetry. But then the music is so often a kind of poetry of it's own.
Leonard Cohen can come close to those levels on occasion. His lyrics can paint a rich mosaic but its almost
like he writes with a consideration for a limited listener's ability to "get" the meaning. Whereas Vernon just seems
cut himself open and let the words fall as they lay, or lay as they fall. I've never been an "album buyer" because
I look at each song as a separate work that clicks or doesn't. I've had many clicks with Bon Iver. More than any
      artist in recent memory.
